Avec son amie Basilisse, elles sont des martyres romaines qui furent condamnées à mort pour avoir enseveli, selon la tradition, les saints apôtres Pierre et Paul. Elles connurent les supplices habituels et cruels de la part de l’empereur Néron.

Il est ressuscité, Jésus, le vrai Pasteur, lui qui a donné sa vie pour son troupeau, lui qui a choisi de mourir pour nous sauver. Alléluia.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui montres aux égarés la lumière de ta vérité pour qu’ils puissent reprendre le bon chemin, donne à tous ceux qui se déclarent chrétiens de rejeter ce qui est indigne de ce nom et de rechercher ce qui lui fait honneur. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Act 6, 8-15
En ces jours-là, Étienne, rempli de la grâce et de la puissance de Dieu, accomplissait parmi les peuplades prodiges et des signes éclatants. Intervinrent alors certaines gens de la synagogue dite des Affranchis, ainsi que des Cyrénéens et des Alexandrins, et aussi des gens originaires de Cilicie et de la province d’Asie. Ils se mirent à discuter avec Étienne, mais sans pouvoir résister la sagesse et à l’Esprit qui le faisaient parler. Alors ils soudoyèrent des hommes pour qu’ils disent : «Nous l’avons entendu prononcer des paroles blasphématoires contre Moïse et contre Dieu. »Ils ameutèrent le peuple, les anciens et les scribes, et, s’étant saisis d’Étienne à l’improviste, ils l’amenèrent devant le Conseil suprême. Ils produisirent de faux témoins, qui disaient : «Cet individu ne cesse de proférer des paroles contre le Lieu saint et contre la Loi. Nous l’avons entendu affirmer que ce Jésus, le Nazaréen, détruirait le Lieu saint et changerait les coutumes que Moïse nous a transmises. » Tous ceux qui siégeaient au Conseil suprême avaient les yeux fixés sur Étienne, et ils virent que son visage était comme celui d’un ange.

Lorsque des grands accusent ton serviteur, je médite sur tes ordres. Je trouve mon plaisir en tes exigences: ce sont elles qui me conseillent.
J’énumère mes voies : tu me réponds ; apprends-moi tes commandements. Montre-moi la voie de tes préceptes, que je médite sur tes merveilles.
Détourne-moi de la voie du mensonge, fais-moi la grâce de ta loi. J’ai choisi la voie de la fidélité, je m’ajuste à tes décisions.

Évangile : Jean 6, 22-29
Jésus avait rassasié cinq mille hommes, et ses disciples l’avaient vu marcher sur la mer. Le lendemain, la foule restée sur l’autre rive se rendit compte qu’il n’y avait eu là qu’une seule barque, et que Jésus n’y était pas monté avec ses disciples, qui étaient partis sans lui. Cependant, d’autres barques, venant de Tibériade, étaient arrivées près de l’endroit où l’on avait mangé le pain après que le Seigneur eut rendu grâce. Quand la foule vit que Jésus n’était pas là, ni ses disciples, les gens montèrent dans les barques et se dirigèrent vers Capharnaüm à la recherche de Jésus. L’ayant trouvé sur l’autre rive, ils lui dirent : « Rabbi, quand es-tu arrivé ici ? » Jésus leur répondit: « Amen, amen, je vous le dis: vous me cherchez, non parce que vous avez vu des signes, mais parce que vous avez mangé de ces pains et que vous avez été rassasiés. Travaillez non pas pour la nourriture qui se perd, mais pour la nourriture qui demeure jusque dans la vie éternelle, celle que vous donnera le Fils de l’homme, lui que Dieu, le Père, a marqué de son sceau. » Ils lui dirent alors : « Que devons-nous faire pour travailler aux œuvres de Dieu ? » Jésus leur répondit: « L’œuvre de Dieu, c’est que vous croyiez en celui qu’il a envoyé. »
Prière sur les offrandes
Que nos prières montent vers toi, Seigneur, avec ces offrandes pour le sacrifice ; dans ta bonté purifie-nous, et nous correspondrons davantage au sacrement de ton amour. Par Jésus.

«C’est la paix que je vous laisse, dit le Seigneur, c’est ma paix que je vous donne. Ce n’est pas à la manière du monde que je vous la donne», Alléluia.
Prière après la communion
Dieu tout-puissant, dans la résurrection du Christ, tu nous recrées pour la vie éternelle ; multiplie en nous les fruits du sacrement pascal : fais-nous prendre des forces neuves à cette nourriture qui apporte le salut. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Jésus a multiplié le pain pour nourrir la foule , cette foule l’a aussi vu réussir l’exploit de marcher sur les eaux . C’est des signes qui l’accroche à Jésus , tels des téléspectateurs accrochés à un match de football parceque l’équipe de leur joueur favori est sur scène . Ils sont accrochés à Jésus soit pour le spectacle , soit pour le bénéfice c’est pourquoi ils le cherche sans répit. « Vous me cherchez parceque vous avez mangé du pain «. Leur foi refuse d’éclore malgré les signes . Ils s’accrochent aux signes et non pas à ce que les signes indiquent . C’est l’exemple de cet insensé qui regarde le doigt de celui qui lui indique un objet . Chers frères il nous arrivent aussi que les besoins que nous présentons à Dieu aucours de nos prières nous obsedent et vident notre être de la présence de Dieu . Cherchons d’abord l’essentiel Dieu lui même et le reste nous sera donné. Que le Seigneur nous donne d’être clairvoyants.

Gospel: Luke 24:35-48
The disciples told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised Jesus at the breaking of bread. They were still talking about all this when Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you!’ In a state of alarm and fright, they thought they were seeing a ghost. But he said, ‘Why are you so agitated, and why are these doubts rising in your hearts? Look at my hands and feet; yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves; a ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have.’ And as he said this he showed them his hands and feet. Their joy was so great that they still could not believe it, and they stood there dumbfounded; so he said to them, ‘Have you anything here to eat?’ And they offered him a piece of grilled fish, which he took and ate before their eyes. Then he told them, ‘This is what I meant when I said, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets and in the Psalms has to be fulfilled.’ He then opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, ‘So you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. Prayer after Communion
Look with kindness upon your people, O Lord, and grant, we pray, that those you were pleased to renew by eternal mysteries may attain in their flesh the incorruptible glory of the resurrection. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The Emmaus disciples recount their encounter with the Risen One and how they recognised him while sharing bread with the rest of their companions, the community, when Jesus arrives again, greeting them and promising them PEACE. The disciples were consequently troubled and perplexed by Jesus’ terrible death and «rumoured» resurrection. His gift, which overcame all of these difficulties, was PEACE. Peace dispels doubt and drives anxiety away. Today, Jesus offers us this serenity: the peace that knows no boundaries, the joy that knows no fear. A person who has found inner peace has already risen with Christ. The previous doubts and worries vanish because Jesus «opened their minds» so they could grasp the Scriptures and how much they knew about Him. So, one by one, the Spirit of the Risen Jesus enlightens their companions’ brains and hearts and converts them – like Peter – into powerful witnesses of the Good News.

1ère lecture : Actes 3, 13-15,17-19

Sachez que le Seigneur a mis à part son fidèle, le Seigneur entend quand je crie vers lui. Beaucoup demandent : « Qui nous fera voir le bonheur ? » Sur nous, Seigneur, que s’illumine ton visage !
Dans la paix moi aussi, je me couche et je dors, car tu me donnes d’habiter, Seigneur, seul, dans la confiance..
2ème lecture : 1 Jean 2:1-5
Mes petits enfants, je vous écris cela pour que vous évitiez le péché. Mais si l’un de nous vient à pécher, nous avons un défenseur devant le Père : Jésus Christ, le Juste. C’est lui qui, par son sacrifice, obtient le pardon de nos péchés, non seulement des nôtres, mais encore de ceux du monde entier.
Voici comment nous savons que nous le connaissons : si nous gardons ses commandements. Celui qui dit : « Je le connais », et qui ne garde pas ses commandements, est un menteur : la vérité n’est pas en lui. Mais en celui qui garde sa parole, l’amour de Dieu atteint vraiment la perfection.

Alléluia. Alléluia. Seigneur Jésus, ouvre-nous les Écritures ! Que notre cœur devienne brûlant tandis que tu nous parles. Alléluia.
Évangile : Luc 24, 35-48
En ce temps-là, les disciples qui rentraient d’Emmaüs racontaient aux onze Apôtres et à leurs compagnons ce qui s’était passé sur la route, et comment le Seigneur s’était fait reconnaître par eux à la fraction du pain. Comme ils en parlaient encore, lui-même fut présent au milieu d’eux, et leur dit : « La paix soit avec vous ! » Saisis de frayeur et de crainte, ils croyaient voir un esprit.
Jésus leur dit : « Pourquoi êtes-vous bouleversés ? Et pourquoi ces pensées qui surgissent dans votre cœur ? Voyez mes mains et mes pieds : c’est bien moi ! Touchez-moi, regardez : un esprit n’a pas de chair ni d’os comme vous constatez que j’en ai. » Après cette parole, il leur montra ses mains et ses pieds. Dans leur joie, ils n’osaient pas encore y croire, et restaient saisis d’étonnement. Jésus leur dit : « Avez-vous ici quelque chose à manger ? »
Ils lui présentèrent une part de poisson grillé qu’il prit et mangea devant eux. Puis il leur déclara : « Voici les paroles que je vous ai dites quand j’étais encore avec vous : “Il faut que s’accomplisse tout ce qui a été écrit à mon sujet
dans la loi de Moïse, les Prophètes et les Psaumes.” » Alors il ouvrit leur intelligence à la compréhension des Écritures. Il leur dit : « Ainsi est-il écrit que le Christ souffrirait, qu’il ressusciterait d’entre les morts le troisième jour, et que la conversion serait proclamée en son nom, pour le pardon des péchés, à toutes les nations, en commençant par Jérusalem. À vous d’en être les témoins. »

Accueille, Seigneur, lesdonsde ton Eglise en fete : tu es à l’origine d’un si grand bonheur, qu’il s’épanouisse en joie éternelle. Par Jésus.

Il fallait que s’accomplit ce qui était annoncé par l’Ecriture : les souffrances du Messie, sa réssurection des morts le troisième jour, et la conversion proclamée en son no, pour le pardon des péchés, à toutes les nations, alléluia.

Regarde avec bonté, Seigneur, le peuple que tu as renové par tes sacrements ; accorde-nous de parvenir à la réssurection bienheureuse, toi qui nous as destinés à connaitre ta gloire; Par Jésus.
Méditation
Jésus, en venant dans ce monde, avait, comme dessein ultime de sa vie, le salut de toute l’humanité. Pour cette raison, il n’a pas seulement apporté aux hommes le salut par sa Passion, sa mort et sa Résurrection ; il a également veillé à faire connaître ce salut à tous les peuples, par l’intermédiaire de l’Église. Pour cela, dès le début de sa vie publique, il s’est choisi des disciples qui, en l’accompagnant, en vivant à ses côtés, et en suivant son exemple et ses enseignements, deviendraient des témoins authentiques auprès des nations du monde. Jésus leur apprit, en tout premier lieu, à se soumettre à la volonté du Père, à aimer la croix, et à se renier eux-mêmes (Matthieu 16.24-25) et il les consacra au salut des âmes (Jean 17.18-20). Aujourd’hui, tout chrétien est appelé à devenir un témoin authentique de Jésus, en revivant en son cœur le mystère pascal. Mais sa maturité chrétienne n’est complète que lorsqu’il se consacre généreusement à l’œuvre d’évangélisation et au salut de ses frères.

He was born in Todi in Umbria and elected Pope in 649. He called a synod to combat the Monothelite heresy concerning the nature of Christ. He died on in 655.

Set aside, O Lord, the bond of sentence written for us by the law of sin, which in the Paschal Mystery you cancelled through the Resurrection of Christ your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Acts 6:1-7
About this time, when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenists made a complaint against the Hebrews: in the daily distribution their own widows were being overlooked. So the Twelve called a full meeting of the disciples and addressed them, ‘It would not be right for us to neglect the word of God so as to give out food; you, brothers, must select from among yourselves seven men of good reputation, filled with the Spirit and with wisdom; we will hand over this duty to them, and continue to devote ourselves to prayer and to the service of the word.’ The whole assembly approved of this proposal and elected Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, together with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus of Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. The word of the Lord continued to spread: the number of disciples in Jerusalem was greatly increased, and a large group of priests made their submission to the faith.

Gospel : John 6:16-21
In the evening the disciples went down to the shore of the lake and got into a boat to make for Capernaum on the other side of the lake. It was getting dark by now and Jesus had still not rejoined them. The wind was strong, and the sea was getting rough. They had rowed three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the lake and coming towards the boat. This frightened them, but he said, ‘It is I. Do not be afraid.’ They were for taking him into the boat, but in no time it reached the shore at the place they were making for.
Prayer over the Offerings
Sanctify graciously these gifts, O Lord, we pray, and, accepting the oblation of this spiritual sacrifice, make of us an eternal offering to you. Through Christ our Lord.

Father, I wish that, where I am, those you gave me may also be with me, that they may see the glory that you gave me, alleluia.
Prayer after Communion
We have partaken of the gifts of this sacred mystery, humbly imploring, O Lord, that what your Son commanded us to do in memory of him may bring us growth in charity. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The disciples were scared when they saw Jesus walking on water approaching them. They thought he was a ghost. They soon discovered that their master was also the master of nature. As the master of nature, he controls all of nature’s troubles, including the storm at sea when the disciples rowed the boat. «It is I. Do not be afraid,» he said, and the sea calmed down. When the Twelve became terrified after watching Jesus walk on the water, Jesus comforted them with these words. He was practically saying to them, «Trust me!» We must walk with unwavering trust in the Church and this world. Invite Jesus into your boat, and any difficulty you think you have, no matter how bad it appears, will vanish for good, just like the storm that plagued the disciples. If you can hear his voice amid life’s storms and respond appropriately, you will find peace that the world cannot provide. When foreign and internal crises endanger our communities, the readings today give us hope. In difficult times, Jesus is with us. Nothing is too complicated for us to master with him!

Elu pape en 649, Martin 1er condamna l’hérésie monothélite qui niait l’existence d’une volonté humaine dans le Christ. L’empereur Constant II le fit arrêter à Rome. Déclaré déchu du pontificat et rapidement oublié du clergé romain, Martin fut exilé en Crimée où il mourut de privations, le 13 avril 656. Il est le dernier des papes martyrs.
Antienne d’ouverture : 1P 2, 9
Nous sommes le peuple qui appartient à Dieu ; nous sommes chargés d’annoncer les merveilles de celui qui nous a appelés des ténèbres à son admirable lumière, alléluia.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui as envoyé ton Fils pour nous sauver et pour faire de nous tes enfants d’adoption, regarde avec bonté ceux que tu aimes comme un père ; puisque nous croyons au Christ, accorde-nous la vraie liberté et la vie éternelle. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Ac 6, 1-7
En ces jours-là, comme le nombre des disciples augmentait, les frères de langue grecque récriminèrent contre ceux de langue hébraïque, parce que les veuves de leur groupe étaient désavantagées dans le service quotidien. Les Douze convoquèrent alors l’ensemble des disciples et leur dirent: « Il n’est pas bon que nous délaissions la parole de Dieu pour servir aux tables. Cherchez plutôt, frères, sept d’entre vous, des hommes qui soient estimés de tous, remplis d’Esprit Saint et de sagesse, et nous les établirons dans cette charge. En ce qui nous concerne, nous resterons assidus à la prière et au service de la Parole. » Ces propos plurent à tout le monde, et l’on choisit : Étienne, homme rempli de foi et d’Esprit Saint, Philippe, Procore, Nicanor, Timon, Parménas et Nicolas, un converti au judaïsme, originaire d’Antioche. On les présenta aux Apôtres, et après avoir prié, ils leur imposèrent les mains. La parole de Dieu était féconde, le nombre des disciples se multipliait fortement à Jérusalem, et une grande foule de prêtres juifs parvenaient à l’obéissance de la foi.

Dieu veille sur ceux qui le craignent, qui mettent leur espoir en son amour, pour les délivrer de la mort, les garder en vie aux jours de famine.

Le soir venu, les disciples de Jésus descendirent jusqu’à la mer. Ils s’embarquèrent pour gagner Capharnaüm, sur l’autre rive. C’était déjà les ténèbres, et Jésus n’avait pas encore rejoint les disciples. Un grand vent soufflait, et la mer était agitée. Les disciples avaient ramé sur une distance de vingt-cinq ou trente stades (c’est- à- dire environ cinq mille mètres), lorsqu’ils virent Jésus qui marchait sur la mer et se rapprochait de la barque. Alors, ils furent saisis de peur. Mais il leur dit : « C’est moi. N’ayez plus peur.» Les disciples voulaient le prendre dans la barque ; aussitôt, la barque toucha terre là où ils se rendaient.

Méditation
Nous sommes invités à approfondir la connaissance de la personne de Jésus. En effet, on a toujours peur d’approcher un étranger. Si nous voulons savoir quand est-ce qu’il visite nos vies et qu’est-ce qu’il peut faire pour dans des moments difficiles, nous devons chercher à mieux le connaître. Comme il est bon et réconfortant de savoir qu’aux heures de tempêtes, à travers les zones de turbulences, il vient à notre rencontre et nous dit : N’ayez pas peur. Quelles tempêtes as-tu l’habitude de traverser ?

Il travailla à affermir la foi en combattant l’arianisme qui professait que si le Christ était parfait, en revanche il n’était pas divin. Son mérite fut d’avoir maintenu le mystère de la Sainte Trinité contre ceux qui tentaient de faire de la doctrine chrétienne un monothéisme à moitié rationaliste, acceptable par tous sans doute, mais éloigné des paroles du Christ lui-même dans leur interprétation fondamentale.

1ère lecture : Ac 5, 34-42

Il ordonna de les faire sortir un instant, puis il dit : « Vous, Israélites, prenez garde à ce que vous allez faire à ces gens-là. Il y a un certain temps, se leva Theudas qui prétendait être quelqu’un, et à qui se rallièrent quatre cents hommes environ ; il a été supprimé, et tous ses partisans ont été mis en déroute et réduits à rien. Après lui, à l’époque du recensement, se leva Judas le Galiléen qui a entraîné beaucoup de monde derrière lui. Il a péri lui aussi, et tous ses partisans ont été dispersés. Eh bien, dans la circonstance présente, je vous le dis : ne vous occupez plus de ces gens-là, laissez-les. En effet, si leur résolution ou leur entreprise vient des hommes, elle tombera. Mais si elle vient de Dieu, vous ne pourrez pas les faire tomber. Ne risquez donc pas de vous trouver en guerre contre Dieu. » Les membres du Conseil se laissèrent convaincre ; ils rappelèrent alors les Apôtres et, après les avoir fait fouetter, ils leur interdirent de parler au nom de Jésus, puis ils les relâchèrent. Quant à eux, quittant le Conseil suprême, ils repartaient tout joyeux d’avoir été jugés dignes de subir des humiliations pour le nom de Jésus. Tous les jours, au Temple et dans leurs maisons, sans cesse, ils enseignaient et annonçaient la Bonne Nouvelle : le Christ, c’est Jésus.

Évangile : Jn 6, 1-15
En ce temps-là, Jésus passa de l’autre côté de la mer de Galilée, le lac de Tibériade. Une grande foule le suivait, parce qu’elle avait vu les signes qu’il accomplissait sur les malades. Jésus gravit la montagne, et là, il était assis avec ses disciples. Or, la Pâque, la fête des Juifs, était proche. Jésus leva les yeux et vit qu’une foule nombreuse venait à lui. Il dit à Philippe : « Où pourrions- nous acheter du pain pour qu’ils aient à manger ? » Il disait cela pour le mettre à l’épreuve, car il savait bien, lui, ce qu’il allait faire. Philippe lui répondit : « Le salaire de deux cents journées ne suffirait pas pour que chacun reçoive un peu de pain.» Un de ses disciples, André, le frère de Simon- Pierre, lui dit : « Il y a là un jeune garçon qui a cinq pains d’orge et deux poissons, mais qu’est-ce que cela pour tant de monde ! » Jésus dit : « Faites asseoir les gens. » Il y avait beaucoup d’herbe à cet endroit. Ils s’assirent donc, au nombre d’environ cinq mille hommes. Alors Jésus prit les pains et, après avoir rendu grâce, il les distribua aux convives ; il leur donna aussi du poisson, autant qu’ils en voulaient. Quand ils eurent mangé à leur faim, il dit à ses disciples : « Rassemblez les morceaux en surplus, pour que rien ne se perde. » Ils les rassemblèrent, et ils remplirent douze paniers avec les morceaux des cinq pains d’orge, restés en surplus pour ceux qui prenaient cette nourriture. À la vue du signe que Jésus avait accompli, les gens disaient: « C’est vraiment lui le Prophète annoncé, celui qui vient dans le monde. » Mais Jésus savait qu’ils allaient venir l’enlever pour faire de lui leur roi ; alors de nouveau il se retira dans la montagne, lui seul.

Reçois avec bonté, Seigneur, les offrandes de ton peuple : garde-le sous ta protection, pour qu’il ne perde aucun des biens que tu lui donnes, et qu’il découvre ceux qui demeurent toujours. Par Jésus.

Ne cesse pas de protéger avec amour, Seigneur, ceux que tu as sauvés : la passion de ton Fils les a rachetés, qu’ils mettent leur joie dans sa résurrection. Lui qui règne.
Méditation
La multiplication des pains est l’un des grands signes que Jésus a réalisé en présence du peuple. Ces deux pains peuvent représenter deux entités : matérielle et spirituelle. Jésus est capable de nous rassasier doublement. Nous sommes invités à ne pas chercher que la satisfaction de nos besoins immédiats ou matériels, le don de Jésus va plus au-delà. Les pains qu’il offre à la foule viennent renouveler la merveille de l’amour de Dieu. Cher frère chrétien autant tu es nécessiteux de la vie de Jésus, autant tu dois aider les gens autour de toi.

Zeno, a native of North Africa, was appointed bishop of Verona (Northern Italy) in 362. He preached much against Arianism and fostered the growth of missionary activity in his area. He died in 371.

O God, who set Saint Catherine of Siena on fire with divine love in her contemplation of the Lord’s Passion and her service of your Church, grant, through her intercession, that your people, participating in the mystery of Christ, may ever exult in the revelation of his glory. First reading : Acts 5:34-42
One member of the Sanhedrin, a Pharisee called Gamaliel, who was a doctor of the Law and respected by the whole people, stood up and asked to have the apostles taken outside for a time. Then he addressed the Sanhedrin, ‘Men of Israel, be careful how you deal with these people. There was Theudas who became notorious not so long ago. He claimed to be someone important, and he even collected about four hundred followers; but when he was killed, all his followers scattered and that was the end of them. And then there was Judas the Galilean, at the time of the census, who attracted crowds of supporters; but he got killed too, and all his followers dispersed. What I suggest, therefore, is that you leave these men alone and let them go. If this enterprise, this movement of theirs, is of human origin it will break up of its own accord; but if it does in fact come from God you will not only be unable to destroy them, but you might find yourselves fighting against God.’ His advice was accepted; and they had the apostles called in, gave orders for them to be flogged, warned them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them. And so they left the presence of the Sanhedrin glad to have had the honour of suffering humiliation for the sake of the name. They preached every day both in the Temple and in private houses, and their proclamation of the Good News of Christ Jesus was never interrupted.

Gospel : John 6:1-15
Jesus went off to the other side of the Sea of Galilee – or of Tiberias – and a large crowd followed him, impressed by the signs he gave by curing the sick. Jesus climbed the hillside, and sat down there with his disciples. It was shortly before the Jewish feast of Passover. Looking up, Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, ‘Where can we buy some bread for these people to eat?’ He only said this to test Philip; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do. Philip answered, ‘Two hundred denarii would only buy enough to give them a small piece each.’ One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said, ‘There is a small boy here with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that between so many?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Make the people sit down.’ There was plenty of grass there, and as many as five thousand men sat down. Prayer over the Offerings
Accept, O Lord, the saving sacrifice we offer in commemoration of Saint Catherine, so that, instructed by her teaching, we may give ever more fervent thanks to you, the one true God. Through Christ our Lord.

May the heavenly table at which we have been fed, O Lord, confer eternal life upon us, as even in this world it nourished the life of Saint Catherine. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The people in our Gospel yearn for God’s word of life, which may nurture them spiritually. They, too, are hungry for material nourishment. The miracle of satisfying both hungers is predicated on the people’s earnest desire to listen to Christ, the charity of the small boy in offering his five loaves and two fish, and the generosity of Christ in offering the people’s hunger to God. «Seek ye first the kingdom of God and its righteousness,» Jesus stated in Matthew 6:33, «and all other things shall be added unto you.» In today’s Gospel, the people who came to listen to Jesus did just that: they came not to eat but to hear Jesus’ wisdom. When nighttime arrived, Jesus realised they were famished. They didn’t go to him whining about hunger; he knew and decided to feed them. We were told that t<hey ate and were satisfied – 5,000 men, not including women and children. This is what occurs to those who honestly seek Christ’s face. He anticipates our needs before we do. He will always provide for us as long as we seek him, follow him, walk in his footsteps, and learn from him. He will never let us go hungry or thirsty.

Saint Stanislas,
Evêque et Martyr
Blanc
Fils d’une riche famille polonaise, Stanislas (1030-1079) distribue ses biens aux pauvres. Évêque de Cracovie en 1072, il entre en conflit avec Boleslas II, monarque injuste et débauché, dont il dénonce les fautes pour défendre le peuple opprimé. Quand il doit en venir à excommunier le roi, celui-ci le tue de sa main, alors que l’évêque célébrait la messe. Stanislas est un des patrons de la Pologne.

Dieu, quand tu sortis à la tête de ton peuple, quand tu marchas dans le désert, la terre trembla, les cieux mêmes fondirent en face de Dieu. Alléluia.

Vous voulez donc faire retomber sur nous le sang de cet homme ! » En réponse, Pierre et les Apôtres déclarèrent : « Il faut obéir à Dieu plutôt qu’aux hommes. Saint Stanislaus, Bishop, Martyr 1036 – 1079

He was born in Poland in 1036. He became bishop of Krakow 1072. He ruled the church as a good shepherd and gave help to the poor. He was murdered as he was celebrating Mass on 8 May 1079.

This holy man fought to the death for the law of his God and did not fear the words of the godless, for he was built on solid rock.

O God, for whose honour the Bishop Saint Stanislaus fell beneath the swords of his persecutors, grant, we pray, that we may persevere strong in faith even until death. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Acts 5:27-33
When the officials had brought the apostles in to face the Sanhedrin, the high priest demanded an explanation. ‘We gave you a formal warning’ he said ‘not to preach in this name, and what have you done? You have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and seem determined to fix the guilt of this man’s death on us.’ In reply Peter and the apostles said, ‘Obedience to God comes before obedience to men; it was the God of our ancestors who raised up Jesus, but it was you who had him executed by hanging on a tree. By his own right hand God has now raised him up to be leader and saviour, to give repentance and forgiveness of sins through him to Israel. We are witnesses to all this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.’ This so infuriated them that they wanted to put them to death.

Gospel: John 3:31-36

Meditation
The story of the apostles before the court displays the outstanding characteristics of the men of God. They were men of principle, and their ruling principle is that obedience to God must come first in all circumstances. They never asked, “Is this course of life safe?” Instead, they asked, “Is this what God wants me to do?” They had a clear idea of their function. They knew that they were witnesses to Christ. John is also a witness to Jesus by calling for faith in the works of Jesus. It is impossible to stop a man like that because it is impossible to stop the truth. Easter brings with it the courage shown by the Apostles to face life’s difficulties and challenges with a profound trust in God’s love and an awareness of the constant presence of the Holy Spirit in all that we do.

He was born in Catalonia, Spain around 1591. St. Michael de Sanctis is noted in the Roman Martyrology as being “remarkable for innocence of life, wonderful penitence, and love for God.”

First reading : Acts 5:17-26
The high priest intervened with all his supporters from the party of the Sadducees. Prompted by jealousy, they arrested the apostles and had them put in the common gaol. But at night the angel of the Lord opened the prison gates and said as he led them out, ‘Go and stand in the Temple, and tell the people all about this new Life.’ They did as they were told; they went into the Temple at dawn and began to preach. When the high priest arrived, he and his supporters convened the Sanhedrin – this was the full Senate of Israel – and sent to the gaol for them to be brought. But when the officials arrived at the prison they found they were not inside, so they went back and reported, ‘We found the gaol securely locked and the warders on duty at the gates, but when we unlocked the door we found no one inside.’ When the captain of the Temple and the chief priests heard this news they wondered what this could mean. Then a man arrived with fresh news. ‘At this very moment’ he said, ‘the men you imprisoned are in the Temple. They are standing there preaching to the people.’ The captain went with his men and fetched them. They were afraid to use force in case the people stoned them.

“How precious must man be in the eyes of the Creator, if he gained so great a Redeemer, and if God ‘gave his only Son’ in order that man ‘should not perish but have eternal life.’” These beautiful words from Saint John Paul II summarise our Gospel today. We read that “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son”. This is the summary of the entire Gospel. Jesus asks sinners to accept and rejoice when he says, “repent and believe the gospel.” Each of us is invited to forsake his sins and take that God loves him so much that He gave his only Son for him/her. This Gospel shows that God is more interested in our salvation than our damnation.
