Gospel: Matthew 21:1-11
When they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village facing you, and immediately you will find an ass tied, and a colt with her: untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ’The Lord has need of them,’ and he will send them immediately.” This took place to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Tell the daughter of Sion, Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of an ass.” The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the ass and the colt, and put their garments on them, and he sat thereon. Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” And when he entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, “Who is this?” And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth of Galilee.”

Six days before the Passover, when the Lord came into the city of Jerusalem, the children ran to meet him; in their hands they carried palm branches and with a loud voice cried out: Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are you, who have come in your abundant mercy! O gates, lift high your heads; grow higher, ancient doors. Let him enter, the king of glory! Who is this king of glory? Almighty ever-living God, who as an example of humility for the human race to follow caused our Saviour to take flesh and submit to the Cross, graciously grant that we may heed his lesson of patient suffering and so merit a share in his Resurrection. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

The Lord has given me a disciple’s tongue. So that I may know how to reply to the wearied he provides me with speech. Each morning he wakes me to hear, to listen like a disciple. The Lord has opened my ear. For my part, I made no resistance, neither did I turn away. I offered my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who tore at my beard; I did not cover my face against insult and spittle. The Lord comes to my help, so that I am untouched by the insults. So, too, I set my face like flint; I know I shall not be shamed.

Second reading: Philippians 2:6-11
His state was divine, yet Christ Jesus did not cling to his equality with God but emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave and became as men are; and being as all men are, he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross. But God raised him high and gave him the name which is above all other names so that all beings in the heavens, on earth and in the underworld, should bend the knee at the name of Jesus and that every tongue should acclaim Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

N. One of the Twelve, the man called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, O. What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you? N. They paid him thirty silver pieces, and from that moment he looked for an opportunity to betray him. Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, C. Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the passover? N. He replied: ✠ Go to so-and-so in the city and say to him, ‘The Master says: My time is near. It is at your house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples.’ N. The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover. When evening came he was at table with the twelve disciples. And while they were eating he said: ✠ I tell you solemnly, one of you is about to betray me. N. They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, C. Not I, Lord, surely? N. He answered, ✠ Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me will betray me. The Son of Man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born! N. And he came back again and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy. Leaving them there, he went away again and prayed for the third time, repeating the same words. Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, ✠ You can sleep on now and take your rest. Now the hour has come when the Son of Man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up! Let us go! My betrayer is already close at hand. N. He was still speaking when Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared, and with him a large number of men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people. Now the traitor had arranged a sign with them. He had said, O. ‘The one I kiss, he is the man. Take him in charge.’ N. So he went straight up to Jesus and said, O. Greetings, Rabbi. N. and kissed him. Jesus said to him, ✠ My friend, do what you are here for. N. Then they came forward, seized Jesus and took him in charge. At that, one of the followers of Jesus grasped his sword and drew it; he struck out at the high priest’s servant, and cut off his ear. Jesus then said, ✠ Put your sword back, for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father who would promptly send more than twelve legions of angels to my defence? But then, how would the scriptures be fulfilled that say this is the way it must be? N. It was at this time that Jesus said to the crowds, ✠ Am I a brigand, that you had to set out to capture me with swords and clubs? I sat teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid hands on me. N. Now all this happened to fulfil the prophecies in scripture. Then all the disciples deserted him and ran away. The men who had arrested Jesus led him off to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. Peter followed him at a distance, and when he reached the high priest’s palace, he went in and sat down with the attendants to see what the end would be. The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus, however false, on which they might pass the death sentence. But they could not find any, though several lying witnesses came forward. Eventually two stepped forward and made a statement, O. This man said: ‘I have power to destroy the Temple of God and in three days build it up.’ N. The high priest then stood up and said to him, O. Have you no answer to that? What is this evidence these men are bringing against you? N. But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, O. I put you on oath by the living God to tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God. N. Jesus answered: ✠ The words are your own. Moreover, I tell you that from this time onward you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven. N. At this, the high priest tore his clothes and said, O. He has blasphemed. What need of witnesses have we now? There! You have just heard the blasphemy. What is your opinion? N. They answered, C. He deserves to die. N. Then they spat in his face and hit him with their fists; others said as they struck him, C. Play the prophet, Christ! Who hit you then? N. Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him and said, O. You too were with Jesus the Galilean. N. But he denied it in front of them all, saying: O. I do not know what you are talking about. N. When he went out to the gateway another servant-girl saw him and said to the people there, O. This man was with Jesus the Nazarene. N. And again, with an oath, he denied it: O. I do not know the man. N. A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, C. You are one of them for sure! Why, your accent gives you away. Then he started calling down curses on himself and swearing: O. I do not know the man. N. At that moment the cock crew, and Peter remembered what Jesus had said, ‘Before the cock crows you will have disowned me three times.’ And he went outside and wept bitterly. When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people met in council to bring about the death of Jesus. They had him bound, and led him away to hand him over to Pilate, the governor. When he found that Jesus had been condemned, Judas his betrayer was filled with remorse and took the thirty silver pieces back to the chief priests and elders, saying: O. I have sinned. I have betrayed innocent blood. N. They replied: C. What is that to us? That is your concern. N. And flinging down the silver pieces in the sanctuary he made off and hanged himself. The chief priests picked up the silver pieces and said, C. It is against the Law to put this into the treasury: it is blood-money. N. So they discussed the matter and bought the potter’s field with it as a graveyard for foreigners, and this is why the field is called the Field of Blood today. The words of the prophet Jeremiah were then fulfilled: And they took the thirty silver pieces, the sum at which the precious One was priced by children of Israel, and they gave them for the potter’s field, just as the Lord directed me. Jesus, then, was brought before the governor, and the governor put to him this question: O. Are you the king of the Jews? N. Jesus replied, ✠ It is you who say it. N. But when he was accused by the chief priests and the elders he refused to answer at all. Pilate then said to him, O. Do you not hear how many charges they have brought against you? N. But to the governor’s complete amazement, he offered no reply to any of the charges. At festival time it was the governor’s practice to release a prisoner for the people, anyone they chose. Now there was at that time a notorious prisoner whose name was Barabbas. So when the crowd gathered, Pilate said to them, O. Which do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ? N. For Pilate knew it was out of jealousy that they had handed him over. Now as he was seated in the chair of judgement, his wife sent him a message, O. Have nothing to do with that man; I have been upset all day by a dream I had about him. N. The chief priests and the elders, however, had persuaded the crowd to demand the release of Barabbas and the execution of Jesus. So when the governor spoke and asked them, O. Which of the two do you want me to release for you? N. they said, C. Barabbas. N. Pilate said to them: O. But in that case, what am I to do with Jesus who is called Christ? N. They all said: C. Let him be crucified! N. Pilate asked: O. Why? What harm has he done? N. But they shouted all the louder, C. Let him be crucified! N. Then Pilate saw that he was making no impression, that in fact a riot was imminent. So he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd and said, O. I am innocent of this man’s blood. It is your concern. N. And the people, to a man, shouted back, C. His blood be on us and on our children! N. Then he released Barabbas for them. He ordered Jesus to be first scourged and then handed over to be crucified. The governor’s soldiers took Jesus with them into the Praetorium and collected the whole cohort round him. Then they stripped him and made him wear a scarlet cloak, and having twisted some thorns into a crown they put this on his head and placed a reed in his right hand. To make fun of him they knelt to him saying, C. Hail, king of the Jews! N. And they spat on him and took the reed and struck him on the head with it. And when they had finished making fun of him, they took off the cloak and dressed him in his own clothes and led him away to crucify him. On their way out, they came across a man from Cyrene, Simon by name, and enlisted him to carry his cross. When they had reached a place called Golgotha, that is, the place of the skull, they gave him wine to drink mixed with gall, which he tasted but refused to drink. When they had finished crucifying him they shared out his clothing by casting lots, and then sat down and stayed there keeping guard over him. Above his head was placed the charge against him; it read: ‘This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.’ At the same time two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left. The passers-by jeered at him; they shook their heads and said, C. So you would destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days! Then save yourself! If you are God’s son, come down from the cross! N. The chief priests with the scribes and elders mocked him in the same way, saying: C. He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the king of Israel; let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. He puts his trust in God; now let God rescue him if he wants him. For he did say, ‘I am the son of God.’ N. Even the robbers who were crucified with him taunted him in the same way. From the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ✠ Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? N. That is, ‘My God, my God, why have you deserted me?’ When some of those who stood there heard this, they said, C. The man is calling on Elijah. N. and one of them quickly ran to get a sponge which he dipped in vinegar and, putting it on a reed, gave it him to drink. The rest of them said: C. Wait! See if Elijah will come to save him. N. But Jesus, again crying out in a loud voice, yielded up his spirit. Here all kneel and pause for a short time. At that, the veil of the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom; the earth quaked; the rocks were split; the tombs opened and the bodies of many holy men rose from the dead, and these, after his resurrection, came out of the tombs, entered the Holy City and appeared to a number of people. Meanwhile the centurion, together with the others guarding Jesus, had seen the earthquake and all that was taking place, and they were terrified and said, C. In truth this was a son of God.
N. And many women were there, watching from a distance, the same women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and looked after him. Among them were Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons. When it was evening, there came a rich man of Arimathea, called Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate thereupon ordered it to be handed over. So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean shroud and put it in his own new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock. He then rolled a large stone across the entrance of the tomb and went away. Now Mary of Magdala and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the sepulchre. Next day, that is, when Preparation Day was over, the chief priests and the Pharisees went in a body to Pilate and said to him, C. Your Excellency, we recall that this impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I shall rise again.’ Therefore give the order to have the sepulchre kept secure until the third day, for fear his disciples come and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ This last piece of fraud would be worse than what went before. N. Pilate said to them: O. You may have your guard. Go and make all as secure as you know how. N. So they went and made the sepulchre secure, putting seals on the stone and mounting a guard.
Prayer over the Offerings
Through the Passion of your Only Begotten Son, O Lord, may our reconciliation with you be near at hand, so that, though we do not merit it by our own deeds, yet by this sacrifice made once for all, we may feel already the effects of your mercy. Through Christ our Lord.

Prayer after Communion
Nourished with these sacred gifts, we humbly beseech you, O Lord, that, just as through the death of your Son you have brought us to hope for what we believe, so by his Resurrection you may lead us to where you call. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Palm Sunday and Passion Sunday: green branches and the dead wood of the cross, life and death; these form the series of poles that frame the great Holy Week that we open today. It is a week of joy and suffering, a week in which opposites coexist, a week in which life is reborn from death and triumphs definitively in man and through the man God, Jesus Christ; it is the week in which God embraces the fragility of man and raises humanity up. Through the procession, we commemorate this memorial of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, but more than that, we affirm our willingness to live with him in his passion to rise with him from all our deaths. The story of the passion, with all its violence and contradictions, exposes the reality of the world that God comes to save by giving his Son as an atoning victim: Between the acclamation and passion, the hosanna and the crucify him of the same crowd, between the “I will lay down my life for you” and the “I do not know this man” of the apostle Peter who denies his master, in the face of all this fickleness of the crowds and his friends, Jesus remains faithful and determined to go to the end of the love he bears for each one of them, for every sinner. How similar this crowd is to us! How many times we have denied him to save our honour, our image, how many times we have abandoned him, life with him is too demanding. Finally, in the passion of Christ, no situation is foreign so that nothing is excluded from salvation; joy and suffering, denial and betrayal, condemnation and death, everything is directed towards the cross and concentrated on it so that God may make all things new and men may be saved.

He became hereditary bishop of Armagh in 1105 and made many reforms; not least on his deathbed, when he abolished the hereditary principle by appointing St Malachy as his successor.

Collect
O God, who have made all those reborn in Christ a chosen race and a royal priesthood, grant us, we pray, the grace to will and to do what you command, that the people called to eternal life may be one in the faith of their hearts and the homage of their deeds. First reading: Ezekiel 37:21-28
The Lord says this: “I am going to take the sons of Israel from the nations where they have gone. I shall gather them together from everywhere and bring them home to their own soil. I shall make them into one nation in my own land and on the mountains of Israel, and one king is to be king of them all; they will no longer form two nations, nor be two separate kingdoms. They will no longer defile themselves with their idols and their filthy practices and all their sins. I shall rescue them from all the betrayals they have been guilty of; I shall cleanse them; they shall be my people and I will be their God. My servant David will reign over them, one shepherd for all; they will follow my observances, respect my laws and practise them. Gospel: John 11:45-56
Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary and had seen what Jesus did believed in him, but some of them went to tell the Pharisees what Jesus had done. Then the chief priests and Pharisees called a meeting. “Here is this man working all these signs” they said “and what action are we taking? If we let him go on in this way everybody will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy the Holy Place and our nation.” One of them, Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said, “You do not seem to have grasped the situation at all; you fail to see that it is better for one man to die for the people, than for the whole nation to be destroyed.” He did not speak in his own person, it was as high priest that he made this prophecy that Jesus was to die for the nation – and not for the nation only, but to gather together in unity the scattered children of God. From that day they were determined to kill him. So, Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but left the district for a town called Ephraim, in the country bordering on the desert, and stayed there with his disciples. The Jewish Passover drew near, and many of the country people who had gone up to Jerusalem to purify themselves looked out for Jesus, saying to one another as they stood about in the Temple, “What do you think? Will he come to the festival or not?”
Prayer over the Offerings
May the gifts we offer from our fasting be acceptable to you, O Lord, we pray, and, as an expiation for our sins, may they make us worthy of your grace and lead us to what you promise for eternity. Through Christ our Lord.

We entreat your majesty most humbly, O Lord, that, as you feed us with the nourishment which comes from the most holy Body and Blood of your Son, so you may make us sharers of his divine nature. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Prayer over the People
Have mercy, Lord, on your Church, as she brings you her supplications, and be attentive to those who incline their hearts before you: do not allow, we pray, those you have redeemed by the Death of your Only Begotten Son, to be harmed by their sins or weighed down by their trials. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Meditation
As the day of our redemption approaches, Jesus’ fate seems to be more and more sealed. “From that day on, they decided to kill him”; but more important than his death is its fundamental meaning at the heart of the revelation made to the priest Caiaphas: “It is better that one man should die for the people, than that the whole nation should perish”. There had been many sacrifices in the past that prefigured the supreme sacrifice of Christ, but these were not sufficient to reconcile God’s people with Him. By accepting to offer his own life as an offering to the Father, Christ presents himself as the holy and flawless victim that the Father could finally accept, the only offering that could obtain forgiveness of the sins of the whole world. He had to die for the nation; and it was not only for the nation, but much more, in order to gather in unity, all the scattered children of God. Jesus is willing to give his life for us; let us welcome his death as a means of our reconciliation with the Father and of unity with our brothers and sisters.

1ère lecture : Jr 20, 10-13
Moi, Jérémie, j’entends les calomnies de la foule : « Dénoncez-le ! Allons le dénoncer, celui-là, l’Épouvante-de-tous-côtés. » Tous mes amis guettent mes faux pas, ils disent : « Peut-être se laissera-t-il séduire… Nous réussirons, et nous prendrons sur lui notre revanche!» Mais le Seigneur est avec moi, tel un guerrier redoutable : mes persécuteurs trébucheront, ils ne réussiront pas. Leur défaite les ouvrira de honte, d’une confusion éternelle, inoubliable. Louange à Dieu ! Quand je fais appel au Seigneur, je suis sauvé de tous mes ennemis.
Les liens de la mort m’entouraient, le torrent fatal m’emportait; des liens infernaux m’étreignaient: j’étais pris aux pièges de la mort.
Dans mon angoisse, j’appelai le Seigneur; vers mon Dieu, je lançai un cri; de son temple il entend ma voix : mon cri parvient à ses oreilles.

Evangile : Jn 10, 31-42
En ce temps-là, de nouveau, des Juifs prient des pierres pour lapider Jésus. Celui-ci reprit la parole: « J’ai multiplié sous vos yeux les œuvres bonnes qui viennent du Père. Pour laquelle de ces œuvres voulez-vous me lapider? » Ils lui répondirent: « Ce n’est pas pour une œuvre bonne que nous voulons te lapider, mais c’est pour un blasphème: tu n’es qu’un homme, et tu te fais Dieu. » Jésus leur répliqua: « N’est-il pas écrit dans votre Loi: J’ai dit : Vous êtes des dieux? Elle les appelle donc des dieux, ceux à qui la parole de Dieu s’adressait, et l’Écriture ne peut pas être abolie. Or, celui que le Père a consacré et envoyé dans le monde, vous lui dites : “Tu blasphèmes”, parce que j’ai dit : “Je suis le Fils de Dieu”. Si je ne fais pas les œuvres de mon Père, continuez à ne pas me croire. Mais si je les fais, même si vous ne me croyez pas, croyez les œuvres. Ainsi vous reconnaîtrez, et de plus en plus, que le Père est en moi, et moi dans le Père.» Eux cherchaient de nouveau à l’arrêter, mais il échappa à leurs mains. Il repartit de l’autre côté du Jourdain, à l’endroit où, au début, Jean baptisait; et il y demeura. Beaucoup vinrent à lui en déclarant : « Jean n’a pas accompli de signe; mais tout ce que Jean a dit de celui-ci était vrai. » Et là, beaucoup crurent en lui.

Dieu de bonté, accorde-nous de pouvoir toujours te servir en approchant de ton autel, et de trouver le salut en participant à son mystère. Par Jésus.

Dans son corps, le Christ a porté nos péchés sur le bois de la croix, afin que nous puissions mourir à nos péchés et vivre selon la justice: c’est par ses blessures que vous avez été guéris.
Prière après la communion
Que la force de cette communion, Seigneur, ne nous abandonne jamais ; qu’elle écarte loin de nous tout ce qui pourrait nous perdre. Par Jésus.
Méditation Saint Jean, en ce jour, nous présente une fois de plus Jésus aux prises avec des Juifs qui s’obstinent à en découdre avec sa vie. Ils accusent injustement Jésus de blasphème. Ils affirment qu’il ne vient pas de Dieu. Or, Jésus produit les fruits de Dieu par les signes et les prodiges qu’il réalise. Et ils ne peuvent nier cette évidence. Tout ceci, nous donne de comprendre que la présence de Jésus les dérange. Et pour cette raison ils veulent l’écarter. Ennemis de la lumière et de la vérité, ils cherchent des raisons sans fondements pour accuser Jésus. Comme ces Juifs, il nous arrive souvent aussi de fomenter de telles accusations vis-à-vis de nos frères ou d’en être des victimes. Le mauvais cœur n’est pas bien, cessons la jalousie et la calomnie dans nos vies. Quand un frère ou une sœur fait ce qui est bien sachons l’encourager au lieu de lui lancer des peaux de banane. SAINT Benjamin
St. Benjamin was a saint of great faith and trust in the Lord, and one of the first Christian martyrs. St. Benjamin is a great example of having courage in declaring one’s faith, and is the patron saint of deacons.
Entrance Antiphon: Ps 30: 10, 16, 18
Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in distress. Deliver me from the hands of my enemies and those who pursue me. O Lord, let me never be put to shame, for I call on you.
Collect
Pardon the offences of your people, we pray, O Lord, and in your goodness set us free from the bonds of the sins we have committed in our weakness. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Jeremiah 20: 10-13
Jeremiah said: “I hear so many disparaging me, ‘Terror from every side! Denounce him! Let us denounce him!’ All those who used to be my friends watched for my downfall, ‘Perhaps he will be seduced into error. Gospel: John 10: 31-42
The Jews fetched stones to stone him, so Jesus said to them, “I have done many good works for you to see, works from my Father; for which of these are you stoning me?” The Jews answered him, “We are not stoning you for doing a good work but for blasphemy: you are only a man and you claim to be God.” Jesus answered: “Is it not written in your Law: I said, you are gods? So the Law uses the word gods of those to whom the word of God was addressed, and Scripture cannot be rejected. Yet you say to someone the Father has consecrated and sent into the world, You are blaspheming,” because he says, ‘I am the Son of God.’ If I am not doing my Father’s work, there is no need to believe me; but if I am doing it, then even if you refuse to believe in me, at least believe in the work I do; then you will know for sure that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” They wanted to arrest him then, but he eluded them. He went back again to the far side of the Jordan to stay in the district where John had once been baptising. Many people who came to him there said, “John gave no signs, but all he said about this man was true,” and many of them believed in him.

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that your servants, who seek the grace of your protection, may be free from every evil and serve you in peace of mind. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Meditation
On this day, St. John once again presents Jesus to us in a confrontation with the Jews who are determined to take his life. They unjustly accuse Jesus of blasphemy. They claim that he is not from God. But Jesus produces the fruits of God by the signs and wonders he performs, and they cannot deny this evidence. This makes us understand why the presence of Jesus disturbs them. And for this reason, they want to put him away. Enemies of the light and of the truth, they look for unfounded reasons to accuse Jesus. Like those Jews, we too often make such accusations against our brothers and sisters, or we fall prey to them. Let us stop jealousy and slander in our lives. When a brother or sister does the right thing, let us encourage them instead of throwing trapping them to a fall. This is not worthy of a Christian.

Saint François de Paule, Ermite
Les fils de saint François d’Assise s’appelaient, par humilité, les ‘’Frères mineurs’’. Un ermite originaire de Paola en Calabre et portant le prénom du Poverello voulut, pour lui-même et ses disciples, une humilité plus radicale encore : ces religieux furent les ‘’Minimes’’ (les plus petits) ! François de Paule (1416-1507) n’était pas prêtre, mais il avait le don des miracles. Le roi Louis XI, malade et redoutant la mort, entendit parler de lui et obtint du pape que le saint vînt en France. Il ne fut pas guéri par le thaumaturge, mais, sous son influence, il affronta la mort avec sérénité. Par la suite, François demeura à Plessis-Lès-Tours, d’où son ordre essaima.

Le Christ est le médiateur d’une alliance nouvelle : puisqu’il est mort pour le rachat des fautes commises sous l’ancienne Alliance, ceux qui sont appelés peuvent recevoir l’héritage éternel déjà promis.
Prière d’ouverture
Sois attentif à nos supplications, Seigneur, veille sur nous et protège-nous, car nous mettons notre espoir en ta miséricorde : purifiés désormais de nos péchés, nous pourrons mener une vie sainte et entrer en possession de ton héritage. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Gn 17, 3-9
En ces jours-là, Abram tomba face contre terre et Dieu lui parla ainsi: « Moi, voici l’alliance que je fais avec toi: tu deviendras le père d’une multitude de nations. Tu ne seras plus appelé du nom d’Abram, ton nom sera Abraham, car je fais de toi le père d’une multitude de nations. Je te ferai porter des fruits à l’infini, de toi je ferai des nations, et des rois sortiront de toi. J’établirai mon alliance entre moi et toi, et après toi avec ta descendance, de génération en génération ; ce sera une alliance éternelle; ainsi je serai ton Dieu et le Dieu de ta descendance après toi. À toi et à ta descendance après toi je donnerai le pays où tu résides, tout le pays de Canaan en propriété perpétuelle, et je serai leur Dieu. » Dieu dit à Abraham: « Toi, tu observeras mon alliance, toi et ta descendance après toi, de génération en génération. »

R/ Le Seigneur s’est toujours souvenu de son alliance.
Cherchez le Seigneur et sa puissance, recherchez sans trêve sa face ; souvenez-vous des merveilles qu’il a faites, de ses prodiges, des jugements qu’il prononça.
Vous, la race d’Abraham son serviteur, les fils de Jacob, qu’il a choisis. Le Seigneur, c’est lui notre Dieu : ses jugements font loi pour l’univers.
Il s’est toujours souvenu de son alliance, parole édictée pour mille générations: promesse faite à Abraham, garantie par serment à Isaac.

Evangile : Jean 8, 51-59
En ce temps-là, Jésus disait aux Juifs: « Amen, amen, je vous le dis: si quelqu’un garde ma parole, jamais il ne verra la mort. » Les Juifs lui dirent: « Maintenant nous savons bien que tu as un démon. Abraham est mort, les prophètes aussi, et toi, tu dis: “Si quelqu’un garde ma parole, il ne connaîtra jamais la mort.” Es-tu donc plus grand que notre père Abraham? Il est mort, et les prophètes aussi sont morts. Pour qui te prends-tu ? » Jésus répondit: « Si je me glorifie moi-même, ma gloire n’est rien ; c’est mon Père qui me glorifie, lui dont vous dites : “Il est notre Dieu”, alors que vous ne le connaissez pas. Moi, je le connais et, si je dis que je ne le connais pas, je serai comme vous, un menteur. Mais je le connais, et sa parole, je la garde. Abraham votre père a exulté, sachant qu’il verrait mon Jour. Il l’a vu, et il s’est réjoui. » Les Juifs lui dirent alors: « Toi qui n’as pas encore cinquante ans, tu as vu Abraham ! » Jésus leur répondit: « Amen, amen, je vous le dis: avant qu’Abraham fût, moi, JE SUIS. » Alors ils ramassèrent des pierres pour les lui jeter. Mais Jésus, en se cachant, sortit du Temple.

Sur l’offrande que nous te présentons, Seigneur, jette un regard de pardon et de paix : qu’elle serve à notre conversion et au salut du monde. Par Jésus.

Dieu n’a pas refusé son propre Fils, il l’a livré pour nous tous ; en nous le donnant, il nous a tout donné.

Tu nous as nourris, Seigneur, de ton Eucharistie, et nous en appelons à ta miséricorde : par le sacrement qui déjà nous donne ta force, rends-nous participants de la vie éternelle. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Chers frères et sœurs, Jésus n’est pas un vulgaire individu dans notre vie. Il en est l’auteur. C’est Lui l’Alpha et l’Oméga. Il préside au destin de l’univers et de l’existence humaine. Jésus est Dieu. Il est notre Dieu. Dans l’évangile il se révèle clairement à nous comme celui qui est. Car, avant qu’Abraham ne soit, lui il est. Ses actes et ses paroles sont vrais et témoignent de cela. Mais, malgré tout ce qu’il fait et dit, nous ne parvenons pas à comprendre parce que nous refusons d’ouvrir les yeux pour voir et croire. Comme ces juifs, nous nous fermons souvent à la vérité et nous disons non à Dieu. Jésus qui nous révèle la vraie identité de son Père veut nous donner en partage sa filiation divine. Il veut nous mettre en relation directe avec son Père. Mais la réaction de cette foule qui veut le lapider montre clairement le traitement que nous réservons souvent à Dieu. Ne nous détournons pas de Dieu. Ne lapidons pas Dieu dans nos vies.
