SAINT PETER REGULATUS
He was a Franciscan reformer born in Valladolid, Spain into a wealthy family. In his convent he lived a life of prayer and poverty. Thirty-six years after his death his body was found untouched by nature.

Christ is mediator of a New Covenant, so that by means of his death, those who are called may receive the promise of an eternal inheritance.

Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead, and yet you say, ‘Whoever keeps my word will never know the taste of death.’ Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? The prophets are dead too. Who are you claiming to be?” Jesus answered: “If I were to seek my own glory that would be no glory at all; my glory is conferred by the Father, by the one of whom you say, ‘He is our God’ although you do not know him. Meditation
Dear brothers and sisters, Jesus is not a mere individual in our lives. He is the author of it. He is the Alpha and the Omega. He presides over the destiny of the universe and of human existence. Jesus is God. He is our God. In the Gospel, he reveals himself clearly to us as the one WHO IS. For before Abraham was, he IS. His actions and words are true and testify to this. But despite all that he does and says, we fail to understand because we refuse to open our eyes to see and believe. Like those Jews, we often close ourselves to the truth and say no to God. Jesus, who reveals to us the true identity of his Father, wants to share with us his divine filiation. He wants to put us in direct relationship with his Father. But the reaction of the crowd that wants to stone him clearly shows how we often treat God. Let us not turn away from God. Let us learn not to stone God in our lives.

He was a Dominican preacher and missionary crusader. He is also known for helping to organize a crusade, at the behest of Pope Clement VI against the Turks who were then menacing Europe.

First reading: Numbers 21: 4-9
The Israelites left Mount Hor by the road to the Sea of Suph, to skirt the land of Edom. On the way the people lost patience. They spoke against God and against Moses, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in this wilderness? For there is neither bread nor water here; we are sick of this unsatisfying food.” At this God sent fiery serpents among the people; their bite brought death to many in Israel. The people came and said to Moses, “We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you. Meditation
Jesus is the Son of the Father. He comes from the Father to show people the way to the Father. The whole mission of Jesus was to tell people about his Father. To show them how much God loves them and his plan of love to reconcile sinful humanity. But unfortunately, many of his contemporaries were closed to his message and did not understand it. This is the case in the Gospel. While he announces his passion, his resurrection and his upcoming ascension into heaven to return to his Father, they only think of his death. Jesus had made it known to them that he is the resurrection and the life. But do we really understand Jesus’ message? Let us not be slow to believe. Let us open our hearts and welcome the salvation that God offers us in his Son Jesus Christ.

Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui nous combles de bénédiction par la richesse infinie de ta grâce, fais-nous quitter ce qui ne peut que vieillir, fais-nous entrer dans ce qui est nouveau, et nous serons préparés à la gloire du Royaume. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Daniel 13, 41c-62
En ces jours-là, le peuple venait de condamner à mort Suzanne. Alors elle cria d’une voix forte : « Dieu éternel, toi qui pénètres les secrets, toi qui connais toutes choses avant qu’elles n’arrivent, tu sais qu’ils ont porté contre moi un faux témoignage. Voici que je vais mourir, sans avoir rien fait de tout ce que leur méchanceté a imaginé contre moi. » Le Seigneur entendit sa voix. Comme on la conduisait à la mort, Dieu éveilla l’esprit de sainteté chez un tout jeune garçon nommé Daniel, qui se mit à crier d’une voix forte : « Je suis innocent de la mort de cette femme!» Tout le peuple se tourna vers lui et on lui demanda: « Que signifie cette parole que tu as prononcée?» Alors, debout au milieu du peuple, il leur dit: « Fils d’Israël, vous êtes donc fous? Sans interrogatoire, sans recherche de la vérité, vous avez condamné une fille d’Israël. Revenez au tribunal, car ces gens-là ont porté contre elle un faux témoignage.» Tout le peuple revint donc en hâte, et le collège des anciens dit à Daniel : « Viens siéger au milieu de nous et donne-nous des explications, car Dieu a déjà fait de toi un ancien.» Et Daniel leur dit : « Séparez-les bien l’un de l’autre, je vais les interroger.» Quand on les eut séparés, Daniel appela le premier et lui dit : « Toi qui as vieilli dans le mal, tu portes maintenant le poids des péchés que tu as commis autrefois en jugeant injustement tu condamnais les innocentes tu acquittais les coupables, alors que le Seigneur a dit : “Tu ne feras pas mourir l’innocent et le juste. Eh bien ! si réellement tu as vu cette femme, dis-nous sous quel arbre tu les as vus se donner l’un à l’autre?» Il répondit: « Sous un sycomore.» Daniel dit : « Voilà justement un mensonge qui te condamne: l’ange de Dieu a reçu un ordre de Dieu, et il va te mettre à mort.» Daniel le renvoya, fit amener l’autre et lui dit : «Tu es de la race de Canaan et non de Juda ! La beauté t’a dévoyé et le désir a perverti ton cœur. C’est ainsi que vous traitiez les filles d’Israël, et, par crainte, elles se donnaient à vous. Mais une fille de Juda n’a pu consentir à votre crime. Dis-moi donc sous quel arbre tu les as vus se donner l’un à l’autre? » Il répondit: « Sous un châtaignier. » Daniel lui dit : «Toi aussi, voilà justement un mensonge qui te condamne: l’ange de Dieu attend, l’épée à la main, pour te châtier, et vous faire exterminer. » Alors toute l’assemblée poussa une grande clameur et bénit Dieu qui sauve ceux qui espèrent en lui. Puis elle se retourna contre les deux anciens que Daniel avait convaincus de faux témoignage par leur propre bouche. Conformément à la loi de Moïse, on leur fit subir la peine que leur méchanceté avait imaginée contre leur prochain : on les mit à mort. Et ce jour-là, une vie innocente fut épargnée.

Évangile : Jean 8, 1-11
En ce temps-là, Jésus s’en alla au mont des Oliviers. Dès l’aurore, il retourna au Temple. Comme tout le peuple venait à lui, il s’assit et se mit à enseigner. Les scribes et les pharisiens lui amènent une femme qu’on avait surprise en situation d’adultère. Ils la mettent au milieu, et disent à Jésus : « Maître, cette femme a été surprise en flagrant délit d’adultère. Or, dans la Loi, Moïse nous a ordonné de lapider ces femmes-là. Et toi, que dis-tu ? » Ils parlaient ainsi pour le mettre à l’épreuve, afin de pouvoir l’accuser. Mais Jésus s’était baissé et, du doigt, il écrivait sur la terre. Comme on persistait à l’interroger, il se redressa et leur dit : « Celui d’entre vous qui est sans péché, qu’il soit le premier à lui jeter une pierre. » Il se baissa de nouveau et il écrivait sur la terre. Eux, après avoir entendu cela, s’en allaient un par un, en commençant par les plus âgés. Jésus resta seul avec la femme toujours là au milieu. Il se redressa et lui demanda : « Femme, où sont-ils donc ? Personne ne t’a condamnée ? » Elle répondit : « Personne, Seigneur. » Et Jésus lui dit : « Moi non plus, je ne te condamne pas. Va, et désormais ne pèche plus. »
Prière sur les offrandes :
Accorde-nous, Seigneur, cette grâce : qu’au moment de célébrer l’Eucharistie, les renoncements imposés à notre corps nous permettent de nous présenter devant toi avec un cœur purifié. Par Jésus.

Méditation
Savoir accuser et pointer du doigt les fautes et les erreurs des autres, voilà un domaine auquel l’homme excelle. Nous camouflons souvent nos manquements et nos fautes et nous projetons sous les caméras la vie de nos frères. Par cette attitude, nous nous donnons souvent une bonne conscience et croyons être plus saints. Pourtant, au fond, en nous examinant, il s’avère que nous sommes des tombeaux vernis. Et c’est parce que nous sommes souvent des êtres faux et fourbes que Jésus nous renvoie à notre conscience aujourd’hui. Avant de vouloir porter ton jugement sur un frère, examine toi d’abord pour voir si tu es meilleur que lui. Le retrait honteux de cette foule affolée qui veut lapider cette pauvre femme est la preuve que personne n’est saint. Efforçons nous de tuer le vice en nous au lieu d’exposer celui des autres. Voilà ce que ce Dieu attend de nous.

SAINT JOHN OF EGYPT
A hermit in a cave, he lived a very strict life of prayer and manual work. People visited him, since he was able to perform miracles, heal the sick and read people’s hearts. He died in 394, at the age of 90.

Susanna was condemned to death. She cried out as loud as she could, ‘Eternal God, you know all secrets and everything before it happens; you know that they have given false evidence against me. And now have I to die, innocent as I am of everything their malice has invented against me?’ The Lord heard her cry and, as she was being led away to die, he roused the holy spirit residing in a young boy named Daniel who began to shout, ‘I am innocent of this woman’s death!’ At which all the people turned to him and asked, ‘What do you mean by these words?’ Standing in the middle of the crowd he replied, ‘Are you so stupid, sons of Israel, as to condemn a daughter of Israel unheard, and without troubling to find out the truth? Go back to the scene of the trial: these men have given false evidence against her.’ All the people hurried back, and the elders said to Daniel, ‘Come and sit with us and tell us what you mean, since God has given you the gifts that elders have.’ Daniel said, ‘Keep the men well apart from each other for I want to question them.’ When the men had been separated, Daniel had one of them brought to him. ‘You have grown old in wickedness,’ he said ‘and now the sins of your earlier days have overtaken you, you with your unjust judgements, your condemnation of the innocent, your acquittal of guilty men, when the Lord has said, “You must not put the innocent and the just to death.” Now then, since you saw her so clearly, tell me what tree you saw them lying under?’ He replied, ‘Under a mastic tree.’ Daniel said, ‘True enough! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God has already received your sentence from him and will slash you in half.’ He dismissed the man, ordered the other to be brought and said to him, ‘Spawn of Canaan, not of Judah, beauty has seduced you, lust has led your heart astray! This is how you have been behaving with the daughters of Israel and they were too frightened to resist; but here is a daughter of Judah who could not stomach your wickedness! Now then, tell me what tree you surprised them under?’ He replied, ‘Under a holm oak.’ Daniel said, ‘True enough! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God is waiting, with a sword to drive home and split you, and destroy the pair of you.’ Then the whole assembly shouted, blessing God, the saviour of those who trust in him. And they turned on the two elders whom Daniel had convicted of false evidence out of their own mouths. As prescribed in the Law of Moses, they sentenced them to the same punishment as they had intended to inflict on their neighbour. They put them to death; the life of an innocent woman was spared that day.

Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as all the people came to him, he sat down and began to teach them. The Scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; and making her stand there in full view of everybody, they said to Jesus, “Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery, and Moses has ordered us in the Law to condemn women like this to death by stoning. What have you to say?” They asked him this as a test, looking for something to use against him. But Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. As they persisted with their question, he looked up and said, “If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” Then he bent down and wrote on the ground again. When they heard this, they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained standing there. He looked up and said, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir” she replied. “Neither do I condemn you,” said Jesus. “Go away, and do not sin anymore.”

Meditation
Man excels in accusing and point
ing fingers others in their faults and mistakes. We often cover up our own shortcomings while we project the lives of our brothers and sisters. In doing this, we often give ourselves a good conscience and believe we are more holy. However, when we examine ourselves, it turns out that we are varnished tombs. And it is because we are often false and deceitful beings that Jesus calls us to account today. Before passing judgment on a fellow human, examine yourself first to see if you are better than they are. The shameful retreat of the tensely angry crowd that wants to stone this poor woman is proof that nobody is holy. Let us strive to kill the vice in us instead of exposing the vice in others. This is what God expects from us.

2ème lecture : Rm 8, 8-11
Frères, ceux qui sont sous l’emprise de la chair ne peuvent pas plaire à Dieu. Or, vous, vous n’êtes pas sous l’emprise de la chair, mais sous celle de l’Esprit, puisque l’Esprit de Dieu habite en vous. Celui qui n’a pas l’Esprit du Christ ne lui appartient pas. Mais si le Christ est en vous, le corps, il est vrai, reste marqué par la mort à cause du péché, mais l’Esprit vous fait vivre, puisque vous êtes devenus des justes. Et si l’Esprit de celui qui a ressuscité Jésus d’entre les morts habite en vous, celui qui a ressuscité Jésus, le Christ, d’entre les morts donnera aussi la vie à vos corps mortels par son Esprit qui habite en vous.

Évangile : Jn 11, 1-45
En ce temps-là, il y avait quelqu’un de malade, Lazare, de Béthanie, le village de Marie et de Marthe, sa sœur. Or Marie était celle qui répandit du parfum sur le Seigneur et lui essuya les pieds avec ses cheveux. C’était son frère Lazare qui était malade. Donc, les deux sœurs envoyèrent dire à Jésus : « Seigneur, celui que tu aimes est malade. » En apprenant cela, Jésus dit : « Cette maladie ne conduit pas à la mort, elle est pour la gloire de Dieu, afin que par elle le Fils de Dieu soit glorifié. » Jésus aimait Marthe et sa sœur, ainsi que Lazare. Quand il apprit que celui-ci était malade, il demeura deux jours encore à l’endroit où il se trouvait. Puis, après cela, il dit aux disciples : « Revenons en Judée. » Les disciples lui dirent : « Rabbi, tout récemment, les Juifs, là-bas, cherchaient à te lapider, et tu y retournes ? » Jésus répondit : « N’y a-t-il pas douze heures dans une journée ? Celui qui marche pendant le jour ne trébuche pas, parce qu’il voit la lumière de ce monde ; mais celui qui marche pendant la nuit trébuche, parce que la lumière n’est pas en lui. » Après ces paroles, il ajouta : « Lazare, notre ami, s’est endormi ; mais je vais aller le tirer de ce sommeil. » Les disciples lui dirent alors : « Seigneur, s’il s’est endormi, il sera sauvé. » Jésus avait parlé de la mort ; eux pensaient qu’il parlait du repos du sommeil. Alors il leur dit ouvertement : « Lazare est mort, et je me réjouis de n’avoir pas été là, à cause de vous, pour que vous croyiez. Mais allons auprès de lui ! » Thomas, appelé Didyme (c’est-à-dire Jumeau), dit aux autres disciples : « Allons-y, nous aussi, pour mourir avec lui ! » À son arrivée, Jésus trouva Lazare au tombeau depuis quatre jours déjà. Comme Béthanie était tout près de Jérusalem – à une distance de quinze stades (c’est-à-dire une demi-heure de marche environ) –, beaucoup de Juifs étaient venus réconforter Marthe et Marie au sujet de leur frère. Lorsque Marthe apprit l’arrivée de Jésus, elle partit à sa rencontre, tandis que Marie restait assise à la maison. Marthe dit à Jésus : « Seigneur, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort. Mais maintenant encore, je le sais, tout ce que tu demanderas à Dieu, Dieu te l’accordera. » Jésus lui dit : « Ton frère ressuscitera. » Marthe reprit : « Je sais qu’il ressuscitera à la résurrection, au dernier jour. » Jésus lui dit : « Moi, je suis la résurrection et la vie. Celui qui croit en moi, même s’il meurt, vivra ; quiconque vit et croit en moi ne mourra jamais. Crois-tu cela ? » Elle répondit : « Oui, Seigneur, je le crois : tu es le Christ, le Fils de Dieu, tu es celui qui vient dans le monde. » Ayant dit cela, elle partit appeler sa sœur Marie, et lui dit tout bas : « Le Maître est là, il t’appelle. » Marie, dès qu’elle l’entendit, se leva rapidement et alla rejoindre Jésus. Il n’était pas encore entré dans le village, mais il se trouvait toujours à l’endroit où Marthe l’avait rencontré. Les Juifs qui étaient à la maison avec Marie et la réconfortaient, la voyant se lever et sortir si vite, la suivirent ; ils pensaient qu’elle allait au tombeau pour y pleurer. Marie arriva à l’endroit où se trouvait Jésus. Dès qu’elle le vit, elle se jeta à ses pieds et lui dit : « Seigneur, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort. » Quand il vit qu’elle pleurait, et que les Juifs venus avec elle pleuraient aussi, Jésus, en son esprit, fut saisi d’émotion, il fut bouleversé, et il demanda : « Où l’avez-vous déposé ? » Ils lui répondirent : « Seigneur, viens, et vois. » Alors Jésus se mit à pleurer. Les Juifs disaient : « Voyez comme il l’aimait ! » Mais certains d’entre eux dirent : « Lui qui a ouvert les yeux de l’aveugle, ne pouvait-il pas empêcher Lazare de mourir ? » Jésus, repris par l’émotion, arriva au tombeau. C’était une grotte fermée par une pierre. Jésus dit : « Enlevez la pierre. » Marthe, la sœur du défunt, lui dit : « Seigneur, il sent déjà ; c’est le quatrième jour qu’il est là. » Alors Jésus dit à Marthe : « Ne te l’ai-je pas dit ? Si tu crois, tu verras la gloire de Dieu. » On enleva donc la pierre. Alors Jésus leva les yeux au ciel et dit : « Père, je te rends grâce parce que tu m’as exaucé. Je le savais bien, moi, que tu m’exauces toujours ; mais je le dis à cause de la foule qui m’entoure, afin qu’ils croient que c’est toi qui m’as envoyé. » Après cela, il cria d’une voix forte : « Lazare, viens dehors ! » Et le mort sortit, les pieds et les mains liés par des bandelettes, le visage enveloppé d’un suaire. Jésus leur dit : « Déliez-le, et laissez-le aller. » Beaucoup de Juifs, qui étaient venus auprès de Marie et avaient donc vu ce que Jésus avait fait, crurent en lui.
Prière sur les offrandes :
Nous t’offrons, Seigneur, le sacrifice de paix, et nous en attendons la grâce : délivre-nous de nos fautes et dirige toi-même nos cœurs incertains. Par Jésus Christ.

Prière après la communion
Accorde-nous, Dieu tout-puissant, d’être toujours fidèles à ces mystères, afin de progresser de jour en jour vers les biens de ton Royaume. Par Jésus.
Méditation
En ce troisième dimanche de Carême, Jésus se présente à nous comme notre résurrection. L’évangile met en exergue le fait que celui qui croit en Jésus, même s’il vient à mourir à déjà la vie. En ressuscitant son ami Lazare, Jésus nous ouvre l’horizon de l’espérance chrétienne. Pour Jésus, la mort n’est pas la fin de tout. La mort est un passage. C’est le passage à la vraie vie. Et pour mériter cette vie qui vient du Christ nous devons croire en Lui, être des hommes et des femmes d’espérance dans un monde sans espérance ; c’est accepter que Jésus puisse manifester la gloire de Dieu dans nos vies comme Marthe et Marie qui croient au Dieu de la résurrection.
