St. Benjamin

St. Benjamin was a saint of great faith and trust in the Lord, and one of the first Christian martyrs. St. Benjamin is a great example of having courage in declaring one’s faith, and is the patron saint of deacons.

Collect

Grant us, we pray, O Lord, perseverance in obeying your will, that in our days the people dedicated to your service may grow in both merit and number. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

 

First reading: Numbers 21:4-9

The Israelites left Mount Hor by the road to the Sea of Suph, to skirt the land of Edom. On the way the people lost patience. They spoke against God and against Moses, ‘Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in this wilderness? For there is neither bread nor water here; we are sick of this unsatisfying food.’ At this God sent fiery serpents among the people; their bite brought death to many in Israel. The people came and said to Moses, ‘We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you. Intercede for us with the Lord to save us from these serpents.’ Moses interceded for the people, and the Lord answered him, ‘Make a fiery serpent and put it on a standard. If anyone is bitten and looks at it, he shall live.’ So Moses fashioned a bronze serpent which he put on a standard, and if anyone was bitten by a serpent, he looked at the bronze serpent and lived.

 

Psalm 101(102):2-3,16-21

R/  O Lord, listen to my prayer and let my cry for help reach you.

  1. O Lord, listen to my prayer and let my cry for help reach you. Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress. Turn your ear towards me and answer me quickly when I call.
  2. The nations shall fear the name of the Lord and all the earth’s kings your glory, when the Lord shall build up Zion again and appear in all his glory. Then he will turn to the prayers of the helpless; he will not despise their prayers.

Gospel: John 8:21-30

Jesus said to the Pharisees: ‘I am going away; you will look for me and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come. The Jews said to one another, ‘Will he kill himself? Is that what he means by saying, “Where I am going, you cannot come”?’ Jesus went on: ‘You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I have told you already: You will die in your sins. Yes, if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.’ So they said to him, ‘Who are you?’ Jesus answered: ‘What I have told you from the outset. About you I have much to say and much to condemn; but the one who sent me is truthful, and what I have learnt from him I declare to the world. They failed to understand that he was talking to them about the Father. So Jesus said: ‘When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He and that I do nothing of myself: what the Father has taught me is what I preach; he who sent me is with me, and has not left me to myself, for I always do what pleases him.’ As he was saying this, many came to believe in him.

 

Prayer over the Offerings

We offer you, O Lord, the sacrifice of conciliation, that, being moved to compassion, you may both pardon our offences and direct our wavering hearts. Through Christ our Lord.

 

Communion Antiphon: Jn 12: 32

When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all to myself, says the Lord.

 

Prayer after Communion

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that, ever seeking what is divine, we may always be worthy to approach these heavenly gifts. Through Christ our Lord.

 

 

Meditation

In what seems to be Jesus’ final statement to the Pharisees, he seems to insist on the mandate given to Him by the Father. He questions their unbelieving attitude. After hearing all that we have about Jesus do we still wallow in the theatre of unbelief?  Do we still feel that the hour to turn to the Lord is not yet at hand? Jesus is insisting on saving us,  and He will never give up on us until he has claimed us all for His glory. As we prepare to enter into the experience of the saving passion of Jesus, are you convinced of your need for repentance?  Many heard Jesus today and believed that He proclaimed the truth. The truth is that we need His salvation. Turn to the Lord and you will be saved.

Saint Benjamin de Perse, Diacre et martyr

Dans le contexte d’une persécution atroce menée en Perse par le roi Yezdigerd, Benjamin fut arrêté, soumis à la torture et condamné à mort parce que sa prédication convertissait beaucoup de mages adeptes du dieu soleil. Il les inviter à adorer le Christ plutôt que le soleil.

Antienne d’ouverture : Ps 26, 13-14

J’en suis sûr, je verrai la bonté du Seigneur sur la terre des vivants. Attends le Seigneur, sois fort et garde courage, attends le Seigneur.

 

Prière d’ouverture :

Seigneur, accorde-nous la grâce de persévérer dans ta volonté afin qu’au long des jours, le peuple dévoué à ton service augmente en nombre et grandisse en sainteté. Par Jésus Christ.

 

1ère lecture : Nb 21, 4-9

En ces jours-là, les Hébreux quittèrent Hor-la-Montagne par la route de la mer des Roseaux en contournant le pays d’Édom. Mais en chemin, le peuple perdit courage. Il récrimina contre Dieu et contre Moïse : « Pourquoi nous avoir fait monter d’Égypte ? Était- ce pour nous faire mourir dans le désert, où il n’y a ni pain ni eau ? Nous sommes dégoûtés de cette nourriture misérable ! » Alors le Seigneur envoya contre le peuple des serpents à la morsure brûlante, et beaucoup en moururent dans le peuple d’Israël. Le peuple vint vers Moïse et dit : « Nous avons péché, en récriminant contre le Seigneur et contre toi. Intercède auprès du Seigneur pour qu’il éloigne de nous les serpents. »Moïse intercéda pour le peuple, et le Seigneur dit à Moïse: « Fais-toi un serpent brûlant, et dresse-le au sommet d’un mât: tous ceux qui auront été mordus, qu’ils le regardent, alors ils vivront ! » Moïse fit un serpent de bronze et le dressa au sommet du mât. Quand un homme était mordu par un serpent, et qu’il regardait vers le serpent de bronze, il restait en vie !

 

Psaume : 101 (102), 2-3, 16-18, 19-21

R/  Seigneur, entends ma prière : que mon cri parvienne jusqu’à toi !

  1. Seigneur, entends ma prière : que mon cri parvienne jusqu’à toi ! Ne me cache pas ton visage le jour où je suis en détresse ! Le jour où j’appelle, écoute- moi ; viens vite, réponds- moi !
  2. Les nations craindront le nom du Seigneur, et tous les rois de la terre, sa gloire: quand le Seigneur rebâtira Sion, quand il apparaîtra dans sa gloire, il se tournera vers la prière du spolié, il n’aura pas méprisé sa prière.
  3. Que cela soit écrit pour l’âge à venir, et le peuple à nouveau créé chantera son Dieu: « Des hauteurs, son sanctuaire, le Seigneur s’est penché; du ciel, il regarde la terre pour entendre la plainte des captifs et libérer ceux qui devaient mourir. »

 

Acclamation :

Gloire et louange à toi, Seigneur Jésus ! Fils de l’homme, élevé sur la croix, tu attires à toi tous les hommes. Gloire et louange à toi, Seigneur Jésus !

 

Evangile : Jn 8, 21-30

En ce temps- là, Jésus disait aux Pharisiens: « Je m’en vais; vous me chercherez, et vous mourrez dans votre péché. Là où moi je vais, vous ne pouvez pas aller. » Les Juifs disaient : « Veut-il donc se donner la mort, puisqu’il dit: “Là où moi je vais, vous ne pouvez pas aller” ? » Il leur répondit : « Vous, vous êtes d’en bas; moi, je suis d’en haut. Vous, vous êtes de ce monde;  moi, je ne suis pas de ce monde. C’est pourquoi je vous ai dit que vous mourrez dans vos péchés. En effet, si vous ne croyez pas que  moi, Je suis, vous mourrez dans vos péchés. » Alors, ils lui demandaient: « Toi, qui es- tu ? » Jésus leur répondit: « Je n’ai pas cessé de vous le dire. À votre sujet, j’ai beaucoup à dire et à juger. D’ailleurs Celui qui m’a envoyé dit la vérité, et ce que j’ai entendu de lui, je le dis pour le monde. » Ils ne comprirent pas qu’il leur parlait du Père. Jésus leur déclara : « Quand vous aurez élevé le Fils de l’homme, alors vous comprendrez que moi, JE SUIS, et que je ne fais rien de moi-même; ce que je dis là, je le dis comme le Père me l’a enseigné. Celui qui m’a envoyé est avec moi; il ne m’a pas laissé seul, parce que je fais toujours ce qui lui est agréable. » Sur ces paroles de Jésus, beaucoup crurent en lui.

 

Prière sur les offrandes :

Nous t’offrons, Seigneur, le sacrifice de paix, et nous en attendons la grâce : délivre-nous de nos fautes et dirige toi-même nos cœurs incertains. Par Jésus Christ.

 

Antienne de la communion : Jn 12, 32

Quand j’aurai été enlevé de terre, dit le Seigneur, j’attirerai à moi tous les hommes.

Accorde-nous, Dieu tout-puissant, d’être toujours fidèles à ces mystères, afin de progresser de jour en jour vers les biens de ton Royaume. Par Jésus.
