St. Birinus
St Birinus was sent to England as a missionary by Pope Honorius I about the year 634. He died about 650 and the main Church of the West Saxons which he had established at Dorchester-on-Thames, was later moved to Winchester, as were the relics of Saint Birinus.

Jesus was teaching one day, and among the audience there were Pharisees and Doctors of the Law who had come from every village in Galilee, from Judaea and from Jerusalem. And the Power of the Lord was behind his works of healing. Then some men appeared, carrying on a bed a paralysed man whom they were trying to bring in and lay down in front of him. But as the crowd made it impossible to find a way of getting him in, they went up on to the flat roof and lowered him and his stretcher down through the tiles into the middle of the gathering, in front of Jesus. Seeing their faith he said, ‘My friend, your sins are forgiven you.’ The Scribes and the Pharisees began to think this over. ‘Who is this man talking blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?’ But Jesus, aware of their thoughts, made them this reply, ‘What are these thoughts you have in your hearts? Which of these is easier: to say, “Your sins are forgiven you” or to say “Get up and walk”? But to prove to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins’, – he said to the paralysed man – ‘I order you: get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.’ And immediately before their very eyes he got up, picked up what he had been lying on and went home praising God. Meditation
A Christian is supposed to be a happy person. The joy in Christianity does not come from the absence of pain and suffering, but from the assurance that we will not face them alone and that with Jesus we are sure to overcome them. Isaiah declares in the First Reading that when God comes, weary hands are strengthened, trembling knees are steadied and faint hearts are encouraged. This prophecy is accomplished by Jesus Christ; in the Gospel, he forgives the sins of the paralysed man and restores his health. Human life is a quest for happiness, and only Jesus can give us true happiness. If we have faith in him, he will calm our storms, wipe our tears and give us the peace and joy we all seek.

Almighty and merciful God, may no earthly undertaking hinder those who set out in haste to meet your Son, but may our learning of heavenly wisdom gain us admittance to his company. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Isaiah 11:1-10
A shoot springs from the stock of Jesse, a scion thrusts from his roots: on him the spirit of the Lord rests, a spirit of wisdom and insight, a spirit of counsel and power, a spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. (The fear of the Lord is his breath.) He does not judge by appearances, he gives no verdict on hearsay, but judges the wretched with integrity, and with equity gives a verdict for the poor of the land. His word is a rod that strikes the ruthless, his sentences bring death to the wicked. Integrity is the loincloth round his waist, faithfulness the belt about his hips. The wolf lives with the lamb, the panther lies down with the kid, calf and lion cub feed together with a little boy to lead them. The cow and the bear make friends, their young lie down together. The lion eats straw like the ox. The infant plays over the cobra’s hole; into the viper’s lair the young child puts his hand. Second reading : Romans 15:4-9
Everything that was written long ago in the scriptures was meant to teach us something about hope from the examples scripture gives of how people who did not give up were helped by God. And may he who helps us when we refuse to give up, help you all to be tolerant with each other, following the example of Christ Jesus, so that united in mind and voice you may give glory to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It can only be to God’s glory, then, for you to treat each other in the same friendly way as Christ treated you. The reason Christ became the servant of circumcised Jews was not only so that God could faithfully carry out the promises made to the patriarchs, it was also to get the pagans to give glory to God for his mercy, as scripture says in one place: For this I shall praise you among the pagans and sing to your name.

Meditation
Repentance is today’s take-home message. We must undergo a change of heart if we want to please God. We must identify and let go of unchristian attitudes and start practicing virtue. Church going, belonging to church groups, participation in church activities, church donations – these things are good in themselves, but will serve no purpose if they are not rooted in and accompanied by this change of heart. Advent is meant for the activity of repentance. Confess your sins; identify a bad habit you have to abandon and a virtue you have to learn; ask Jesus to give you his Spirit with his seven gifts, so that you may strive for holiness and refuse to give up.

St. Francis Xavier
(1506 – 1552)
He was born in Spain, 1506 and ordained a priest in 1537. In 1541 the Pope sent him as part of a mission to India, and he spent the rest of his life in the East. He died of fever and exhaustion on the Chinese island of Shangchwan in 1552.

Meditation
Jesus’ last command before leaving this world was, “Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation.” The Good News is not a gift that we should keep to ourselves; we must share it with others. This is why St. Paul says it is a duty to preach the Good News. We must make Jesus known and loved around us. Those who meet us and interact with us should discover the love of God, made manifest in Jesus, through our words and actions. Our very lifestyle should be a Gospel which we preach to the world. It is a task that we cannot run away from; to be a Christian is to be a missionary.

MEDITATION
The Lamb played an important role in the lives of the Jewish people. The Lamb’s sacrifice was a symbol of deliverance from slavery in Egypt. By calling Jesus the Lamb, John referred to a new spiritual deliverance from the slavery of sin. The question asked by Isaac – the Son of Abraham – at the beginning of Genesis, “where is the lamb of sacrifice?” has now been answered by John in these words: “there is the lamb.” Jesus is the Lamb who takes away our sins. Let us turn to Christ to obtain true freedom from our sins in this new year.

St. Bibiana
Her parents were martyred in the persecution of Julian the Apostate, and Bibiana and her sister Demetria were turned over to a woman named Rufina who tried to force her into prostitution. Upon her continued refusal, Bibiana was imprisoned in a mad house, and then flogged to death.

Meditation
Today God addresses a message of hope to a world marked by suffering and injustice. Through Isaiah, he announces healing and restoration to those who are afflicted, the downfall of the wicked and happy days for those who suffer persecution. By opening the eyes of the two blind men, Jesus wants us to understand that no matter how long the darkness of pain, suffering and injustice lasts, we can be sure that the dawn of relief, peace and joy will eventually come. It suffices to have faith in him, like the two blind men did. In the face of the challenges we face every day, God tells us, “Hope in him, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord.”

Blessed Clementine Anuarite
(1939 – 1964)
Nengepeta Anuarite was born in Zaire in 1939. In 1955 she joined the Religious Institute of the “Holy Family”. In 1964 she, and the whole community, were kidnapped by the Simba rebels. Anuarite was killed on 1 December 1964, having refused to be the wife of the Colonel.

May these mysteries, O Lord, in which we have participated, profit us, we pray, for even now, as we walk amid passing things, you teach us by them to love the things of heaven and hold fast to what endures. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Just as every house is built on a foundation, we need an ideal which gives meaning and direction to our lives. Jesus is the one true foundation; he is the only one we can count on to find true fulfilment. If we need guidance in our activities and protection against life’s storms, we have to turn to him in submission and trust. And it is not enough to identify ourselves as Christians; we have to listen to his Word and act on it. We have to learn to think, speak and act according to God’s will. It is our choices and actions that show whether we believe in Jesus or not. Christianity is not a label or a title; it is a way of life.
