Pope St. Clement I
Clement was the fourth Bishop of Rome after Peter, Linus and Cletus. Clement’s letter to the Corinthian church has survived. It is the first known Patristic document, and exhorts them to peace and brotherly harmony.

The Lord speaks of peace to his people and his holy ones and to those who turn to him.

Stir up the will of your faithful, we pray, O Lord, that, striving more eagerly to bring your divine work to fruitful completion, they may receive in greater measure the healing remedies your kindness bestows. First reading : Apocalypse 15:1-4
What I, John, saw in heaven was a great and wonderful sign: seven angels were bringing the seven plagues that are the last of all, because they exhaust the anger of God. I seemed to see a glass lake suffused with fire, and standing by the lake of glass, those who had fought against the beast and won, and against his statue and the number which is his name. They all had harps from God, and they were singing the hymn of Moses, the servant of God, and of the Lamb: ‘How great and wonderful are all your works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are all your ways, King of nations. Who would not revere and praise your name, O Lord? You alone are holy, and all the pagans will come and adore you for the many acts of justice you have shown.’

Keep this carefully in mind: you are not to prepare your defence, because I myself shall give you an eloquence and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to resist or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relations and friends; and some of you will be put to death. Meditation
The early centuries of the Church were an age of persecution. While the early Christians suffered persecution, they witnessed to Christ and brought about conversions by their amazing bravery and martyrdom. Others who were fleeing the sword took the good news to new territories. In accordance with the words of Jesus, the trials of the Christians became opportunities of evangelization while the blood of the martyrs became the seeds of Christianity. Many of today’s Christians are cold-feeted, too afraid to assert their faith. Christianity is neither an offensive nor secret religion and we should proudly seize every opportunity we have to profess it.

St. Cecilia
Devotion to St Cecilia, in whose honour a basilica was constructed in Rome in the fifth century, has spread far and wide because of the Passion of Saint Cecilia, which holds her up as a perfect example of a Christian woman, who embraced virginity and suffered martyrdom for the love of Christ.
Entrance Antiphon
Behold, now she follows the Lamb who was crucified for us, powerful in virginity, modesty her offering, a sacrifice on the altar of chastity.
Collect
O God, who gladden us each year with the feast day of your handmaid Saint Cecilia, grant, we pray, that what has been devoutly handed down concerning her may offer us examples to imitate and proclaim the wonders worked in his servants by Christ your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Apocalypse 14:14-19
In my vision I, John, saw a white cloud and, sitting on it, one like a son of man with a gold crown on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. Then another angel came out of the sanctuary, and shouted aloud to the one sitting on the cloud, ‘Put your sickle in and reap: harvest time has come and the harvest of the earth is ripe.’ Then the one sitting on the cloud set his sickle to work on the earth, and the earth’s harvest was reaped.
Another angel, who also carried a sharp sickle, came out of the temple in heaven, and the angel in charge of the fire left the altar and shouted aloud to the one with the sharp sickle, ‘Put your sickle in and cut all the bunches off the vine of the earth; all its grapes are ripe.’ So the angel set his sickle to work on the earth and harvested the whole vintage of the earth and put it into a huge winepress, the winepress of God’s anger.

When some were talking about the Temple, remarking how it was adorned with fine stonework and votive offerings, Jesus said, ‘All these things you are staring at now – the time will come when not a single stone will be left on another: everything will be destroyed.’ And they put to him this question: ‘Master,’ they said ‘when will this happen, then, and what sign will there be that this is about to take place?’
‘Take care not to be deceived,’ he said ‘because many will come using my name and saying, “I am he” and, “The time is near at hand.” Refuse to join them. And when you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened, for this is something that must happen but the end is not so soon.’ Then he said to them, ‘Nation will fight against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes and plagues and famines here and there; there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.’

O God, who bestowed on St. Cecilia. a crown among the Saints for her twofold triumph of virginity and martyrdom, grant, we pray, through the power of this Sacrament, that, bravely overcoming every evil, we may attain the glory of heaven. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The day of the Lord is usually presented in terms of harvest time. God allows both good and bad people to live together; he permits both the corn and weeds to grow in the same farm. On the day of harvest He makes the difference as he burns the weeds and put the corn in the barn. For those who follow God, the day of the Lord is the day of salvation, but for those who have neglected God and pushed Him to the periphery of their lives, the Day of the Lord speaks of disaster and the winepress of God’s anger! That is why in the Gospel today, as the people were more seduced by the beauty of the Temple, Jesus saw its weakness immediately and knew it would collapse. If we do not anchor our security in God, we are bound to collapse too. Since modern man is so taken up by secularism and materialism, they easily get frightened by all the wars, frightful happenings and the calamities in our world today. False prophets and teachers take advantage of this fear and preach amount the imminent end of the world. Many believe them and become frantic.

The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
In unity with Eastern Christianity, and commemorating the dedication in 543 of the New Basilica of Saint Mary, this feast celebrates Mary’s “dedication” of herself to God from her infancy, inspired by the Holy Spirit, whose grace had filled her ever since her immaculate conception.

Hail, Holy Mother, who gave birth to the King who rules heaven and earth for ever.

As we venerate the glorious memory of the most holy Virgin Mary, grant, we pray, O Lord, through her intercession, that we, too, may merit to receive from the fullness of your grace. First reading : Apocalypse 14:1-5
In my vision I, John, saw Mount Zion, and standing on it a Lamb who had with him a hundred and forty-four thousand people, all with his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. I heard a sound coming out of the sky like the sound of the ocean or the roar of thunder; it seemed to be the sound of harpists playing their harps. There in front of the throne they were singing a new hymn in the presence of the four animals and the elders, a hymn that could only be learnt by the hundred and forty-four thousand who had been redeemed from the world; they follow the Lamb wherever he goes; they have been redeemed from amongst men to be the first-fruits for God and for the Lamb. They never allowed a lie to pass their lips and no fault can be found in them.

- The Lord’s is the earth and its fullness, the world and all its peoples. It is he who set it on the seas; on the waters he made it firm.

As we receive this heavenly Sacrament, we beseech, O Lord, your mercy, that we, who rejoice in commemorating the Blessed Virgin Mary, may by imitating her serve worthily the mystery of our redemption. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Biblical numbering is much more about symbolism than arithmetic precision. A hundred and forty-four thousand with twelve thousand from each of the tribes of Israel points more to the universality and uniformity of salvation given to God’s new Israel, the new people of God spread throughout the world, than to the tribes within the geographical Israel we know. The important point here is that these redeemed people of God are those who follow the lamb wherever he goes; they cling to Jesus and remain faithful to him whatever be the situation. These people who follow the lamb do not hold back anything he asks of them, not even their very lives. Like the poor widow they can stake everything they own for the love of Christ.

Second reading : Colossians 1:12-20

The people stayed there before the cross watching Jesus. As for the leaders, they jeered at him. ‘He saved others,’ they said ‘let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.’ The soldiers mocked him too, and when they approached to offer vinegar they said, ‘If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.’ Above him there was an inscription: ‘This is the King of the Jews.’ One of the criminals hanging there abused him. ‘Are you not the Christ?’ he said. ‘Save yourself and us as well.’ But the other spoke up and rebuked him. ‘Have you no fear of God at all?’ he said. ‘You got the same sentence as he did, but in our case we deserved it: we are paying for what we did. Meditation
We began the Liturgical Year with Advent in which we joyfully anticipated the celebration of the birthday of Christ. We end the Liturgical Year with the solemnity of the universal kingship of Christ. Christ is the beginning and end of all time, the alpha and the omega, the firstborn of all creation under whom are subjected thrones, rulers, authorities, powers and principalities. We too are citizens of Christ’s kingship, for we have been called out of darkness to share in the inheritance of the saints in his kingdom of light. The gospel text tells what to do to inherit eternal life: to show care and to open our hearts and hands to our needy neighbour.

St. Nerses the Great
Bishop and martyr, in 353 he was made Catholicos of the Armenians. Nerses devoted much effort to reforming the Armenian Church, founding hospitals and monasteries. His reforms and denunciation of King Arshak’s murder of the queen led to his exile and assassination.

They are able to lock up the sky so that it does not rain as long as they are prophesying; they are able to turn water into blood and strike the whole world with any plague as often as they like. When they have completed their witnessing, the beast that comes out of the Abyss is going to make war on them and overcome them and kill them. Gospel : Luke 20:27-40
Some Sadducees – those who say that there is no resurrection – approached him and they put this question to him, ‘Master, we have it from Moses in writing, that if a man’s married brother dies childless, the man must marry the widow to raise up children for his brother. Well then, there were seven brothers. The first, having married a wife, died childless. The second and then the third married the widow. And the same with all seven, they died leaving no children. Finally the woman herself died Now, at the resurrection, to which of them will she be wife since she had been married to all seven?’ Jesus replied, ‘The children of this world take wives and husbands, but those who are judged worthy of a place in the other world and in the resurrection from the dead do not marry because they can no longer die, for they are the same as the angels, and being children of the resurrection they are sons of God. And Moses himself implies that the dead rise again, in the passage about the bush where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Now he is God, not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all men are in fact alive.’ Some Scribes then spoke up. ‘Well put, Master’ they said – because they would not dare to ask him any more questions.

Meditation
Resurrection from the dead is a fundamental Judeo-Christian belief. Nonetheless, there are some who do not affirm this belief, like the Sadducees and the materialists who believe that everything including man is mere matter. Jesus in the Gospel affirms that resurrection is not a mere continuity of physical existence, which is a misconception by the Sadducees. Those who have experienced the resurrection are like the angels; there is no giving in marriage or indulging in physical activities. It is the resurrection that gives meaning to our earthly existence.

The Dedication of
the Basilicas of
Ss Peter and Paul
The Basilica of St Peter, today known as the Vatican Basilica, is the seat of Catholicity and is built over the tomb of St Peter, the first Pope. Over Paul’s grave is built another magnificent Catholic Basilica, St Paul’s Outside the Walls. In the anniversary of the dedication of the basilicas of St Peter at the Vatican and St Paul in the Via Ostiense, we join a tradition of honouring the two greatest apostles of Christ.

Gospel : Luke 19:45-48
Jesus went into the Temple and began driving out those who were selling. ‘According to scripture,’ he said ‘my house will be a house of prayer. But you have turned it into a robbers’ den.’He taught in the Temple every day. The chief priests and the scribes, with the support of the leading citizens, tried to do away with him, but they did not see how they could carry this out because the people as a whole hung on his words.

Meditation
Most of us can hardly imagine Jesus ever getting angry. The Gospel text presents us with such an image or picture of Jesus. He goes into the temple, makes a whip out of the cord, overturns the tables of the moneychangers and drives them out of the temple. Jesus does not condone extortion within the house of the Father.
