Second reading : Colossians 3:1-5,9-11
Since you have been brought back to true life with Christ, you must look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand. Let your thoughts be on heavenly things, not on the things that are on the earth, because you have died, and now the life you have is hidden with Christ in God. But when Christ is revealed – and he is your life – you too will be revealed in all your glory with him. That is why you must kill everything in you that belongs only to earthly life: fornication, impurity, guilty passion, evil desires and especially greed, which is the same thing as worshipping a false god; and never tell each other lies. A man in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Master, tell my brother to give me a share of our inheritance.’ ‘My friend,’ he replied, ‘who appointed me your judge, or the arbitrator of your claims?’ Then he said to them, ‘Watch, and be on your guard against avarice of any kind, for a man’s life is not made secure by what he owns, even when he has more than he needs.’ Then he told them a parable: ‘There was once a rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself, “What am I to do? I have not enough room to store my crops.” Then he said, “This is what I will do: I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain and my goods in them, and I will say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, have a good time.” But God said to him, “Fool! Graciously sanctify these gifts, O Lord, we pray, and, accepting the oblation of this spiritual sacrifice, make of us an eternal offering to you. Through Christ our Lord.

You have given us, O Lord, bread from heaven, endowed with all delights and sweetness in every taste.
Prayer after Communion
Accompany with constant protection, O Lord, those you renew with these heavenly gifts and, in your never-failing care for them, make them worthy of eternal redemption. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
We often waste time on passing things. We kill each other for the things of this world that will help us to go to hell than the things of God that will help us go to heaven. The first reading reminds us that all these things will pass away; that we work so hard for what we will soon let go – Vanity of vanities. Today in the Holy gospel, we see the desire for useless things. Jesus teaches that we must avoid greed to be able to grow and be productive. Above all, it is important to seek justice because without justice there is neither peace nor communion. Possessions do not give life. Therefore, we must make sure that our desire to have what we lack does not make us neglect what is going to give us life.

St. Peter
Chrysologus
(380 – 450)
He was born and died in Imola in northern Italy. The name “Chrysologus” means “golden speech”, and was given to Peter because he was such a gifted preacher; unfortunately, most of his writings have perished, and only a collection of short sermons remains.

So now amend your behaviour and actions, listen to the voice of the Lord your God: if you do, he will relent and not bring down on you the disaster he has pronounced against you. For myself, I am as you see in your hands. Do whatever you please or think right with me. But be sure of this, that if you put me to death, you will be bringing innocent blood on yourselves, on this city and on its citizens, since the Lord has truly sent me to you to say all these words in your hearing.’ The officials and all the people then said to the priests and prophets, ‘This man does not deserve to die: he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God.’ Jeremiah had a protector in Ahikam son of Shaphan, so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.

Gospel : Matthew 14:1-12
Herod the tetrarch heard about the reputation of Jesus, and said to his court, ‘This is John the Baptist himself; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.’ Now it was Herod who had arrested John, chained him up and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. For John had told him, ‘It is against the Law for you to have her.’ He had wanted to kill him but was afraid of the people, who regarded John as a prophet. Then, during the celebrations for Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company, and so delighted Herod that he promised on oath to give her anything she asked. Prompted by her mother she said, ‘Give me John the Baptist’s head, here, on a dish.’ The king was distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he ordered it to be given her, and sent and had John beheaded in the prison. The head was brought in on a dish and given to the girl who took it to her mother. John’s disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went off to tell Jesus.

Meditation
“Give me John the Baptist’s head, here, in a dish.” This may have been one of the requests the king did not expect. Obviously, the request is not from the girl, she has nothing to do with the head of John. The reading mentions how Herodias has been looking for an opportunity to kill John and surely the king knew. If the king finally granted the request, he was also responsible for the death of John. The lesson to learn from the story from the gospel is that we must be careful with the kind of promises we make. Secondly, the fulfilment of whatever promise must be discerned with wisdom. If the king had applied wisdom, he would have known that the request was not from the girl and in such situation, he was not bound to fulfil it.

St. Martha
“Jesus loved Martha and Mary and Lazarus.” This statement in John’s gospel tells us of the special relationship Jesus had with Martha, her sister, and her brother. Apparently Jesus was a frequent guest at Martha’s home in Bethany, a small village two miles from Jerusalem. We read of three visits in Luke 10:38-42, John 11:1-53, and John 12:1-9.

Jesus entered a village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.
Collect
Almighty ever-living God, whose Son was pleased to be welcomed in Saint Martha’s house as a guest, grant, we pray, that through her intercession, serving Christ faithfully in our brothers and sisters, we may merit to be received by you in the halls of heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word was addressed to Jeremiah by the Lord, ‘The Lord says this: Stand in the court of the Temple of the Lord. To all the people of the towns of Judah who come to worship in the Temple of the Lord you must speak all the words I have commanded you to tell them; do not omit one syllable. Perhaps they will listen and each turn from his evil way: if so, I shall relent and not bring the disaster on them which I intended for their misdeeds. Say to them, “The Lord says this: If you will not listen to me by following my Law which I put before you, by paying attention to the words of my servants the prophets whom I send so persistently to you, without your ever listening to them, I will treat this Temple as I treated Shiloh, and make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth.”’ The priests and prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah say these words in the Temple of the Lord. Why have you made this prophecy in the name of the Lord, “This Temple will be like Shiloh, and this city will be desolate, and uninhabited”?’ And the people were all crowding round Jeremiah in the Temple of the Lord.

Gospel : John 11:19-27
Many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to sympathise with them over their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus had come she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in the house. Martha said to Jesus, ‘If you had been here, my brother would not have died, but I know that, even now, whatever you ask of God, he will grant you.’ ‘Your brother’ said Jesus to her ‘will rise again.’ Martha said, ‘I know he will rise again at the resurrection on the last day.’ Jesus said: ‘I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, even though he dies he will live, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ she said ‘I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world.’

May the holy reception of the Body and Blood of your Only Begotten Son, O Lord, turn us away from the cares of this fallen world, so that, following the example of Saint Martha, we may grow in sincere love for you on earth and rejoice to behold you for eternity in heaven. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
“If you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Whenever we have Jesus with us, death is far from us, but the moment we take Jesus out of our lives, death becomes imminent. Whoever believes that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, will, like Martha, “Lord, I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the son of God, he who is coming into the world”. What profession of faith is more than Martha’s. These sisters profess their belief in the son of God. While Martha made her profession of faith today, Mary will soon announce the message of the resurrection to the apostles. Let all those who believe in the Son of God hold firm to Him so that they will have Everlasting Life. “He who believes in me shall not die, even if he dies, he will have Everlasting Life.”

St. Victor
(d. 198)
Victor, an African by birth, was elected pope in 189. During his pontificate, which lasted until 198, he settled the controversy over the date of Easter. After much consultation and discussion, the decision was taken to celebrate it on Sunday throughout the Church. He was the first pope from Africa.

Meditation
When Jesus sent out the seventy, He gave them the mission to make disciples of all nations. The mission of the Church is to gather the good and the bad. The image of the net is that of the Church which gathers everyone. Even though the Church has a mission to gather, there will be judgement at the end through which many will be selected. Those who had refused to repent will be thrown into the blazing furnace. The same Church with the mission to safe her members, adopted purgatory as a place of purification for those who still take their time to repent. Let us join the Church to continue praying especially for the souls undergoing purification in purgatory.

Blessed Titus Brandsma
(1881 – 1942)
He was born in Bolsward in the Netherlands. He was vehemently opposed to Nazi ideology. He was arrested in January 1942, when he tried to persuade Dutch Catholic newspapers not to print Nazi propaganda (as was required by the law of the Nazi German occupiers). Titus Brandsma was killed by lethal injection in Dachau on July 26, 1942.

Meditation
Whenever one values of something, he does everything to possess that thing. A true Christian who knows the value of Christianity and will do all it takes to uphold Christian values. The parable of the treasure in today’s gospel invites us not to let opportunities pass by as far as the kingdom of God is concerned. Many have been longing for such a treasure. We are assured that if truly know the value of what we are looking for, we will find it. This can be found in we least expect like a forgiving word and a friendly smile in which the other person finds joy and happiness. As the founder buries the treasure again, may we also preserve this treasure with much care as we work hard to have it.

St. Anna
and
St. Joachim
An ancient tradition, already known in the 2nd century, gives these names to the parents of the Virgin Mary. The cult of St Anna became popular in the 6th century in the East, and in the 10th century in the West, where she is the patron saint of Brittany; Joachim was added a long time later – too often the fate of fathers.

Let us praise Joachim and Anne, to whom, in their generation, the Lord gave him who was a blessing for all the nations.

O Lord, God of our Fathers, who bestowed on Saints Joachim and Anne this grace, that of them should be born the Mother of your incarnate Son, grant, through the prayers of both, that we may attain the salvation you have promised to your people. Prayer after Communion
O God, who willed that your Only Begotten Son should be born from among humanity so that by a wonderful mystery, humanity might be born again from you, we pray that, in your kindness, you may sanctify by the spirit of adoption those you have fed with the Bread you give your children. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
In Jesus’ time, parables were among the common ways of teaching and passing across messages. Jesus’ explanation of the parable tells us that, the kingdom of God exists in the world and grows. In the world, we have good and bad people but the light of God shines on all of them. God gives enough time for His children so that some can repent. There will be judgement, meaning good that some people will still not make use of the time given to them. If we stand for what is right and denounce evil, you will shine like the sun in the kingdom of God.
