Originally English, he was ordained in Segovia on 25 March 1662. He returned to England in 1663 ministering to Catholics in the areas of Holywell and Cheshire, often in hiding. He was arrested, imprisoned for two months, and then hanged, drawn and quartered for the crime of being a Catholic priest.

Meditation
The Church, which is the body of Christ, is an assembly of people of all race, tribe, language and nation. It is not a monopoly of a particular family or tribe or language. Jesus Christ teaches us to offer equal treatment for all members of the body of Christ (those who do the will of God). In the Church today, we notice a lot of partiality and tribalism. A particular group or people have taken the Church. If Christians can abide by the conditions of being members, then they will also have their proper place. Jesus is not refusing to recognise His family, but expands the concept of family.

He was Bishop of Utrecht between 816 and 838. Frederick was born around 780 in Friesland and was a grandson of the Frisian King Radboud. He preached at Walcheren and together with St. Odulfus in Stavoren and its surroundings.

Meditation
Before this scene, Jesus told the Pharisees that a good tree only produces good fruits and a bad tree produces bad fruits. Experts in religion will not listen to Him but want to challenge Him by asking for signs. Jesus has been showing them good signs but they were not enough for them. They represent the bad tree with bad fruits because they pretend to be teachers of the law but they do not practice it. The sign of Jonah is the resurrection of Jesus. If they do not believe in His word and works, maybe at the resurrection they will believe. It was at the resurrection that some professed “Truly this man was the son of God”. If the Ninevites could believe in the prophet and repent, what more of those the Son of God speaks to directly, our generation”.

The Feast of Our Lady
of Mount Carmel
Holy Scripture celebrates the beauty of Mount Carmel, where the prophet Elijah defended Israel’s pure faith in the living God. In the 12th century some hermits took up residence on this mountain and eventually set up the Carmelite Order, which is dedicated to living a contemplative life under the patronage of the Holy Mother of God.

As for me, in justice I shall behold your face; I shall be filled with the vision of your glory.

O God, who show the light of your truth to those who go astray so that they may return to the right path, give all who, for the faith they profess, are accounted Christians, the grace to reject whatever is contrary to the name of Christ and to strive after all that does it honour. Gospel : Matthew 12:14-21
The Pharisees went out and began to plot against him, discussing how to destroy him. Jesus knew this and withdrew from the district. Many followed him and he cured them all, but warned them not to make him known. This was to fulfil the prophecy of Isaiah: Here is my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved, the favourite of my soul. I will endow him with my spirit, and he will proclaim the true faith to the nations. He will not brawl or shout, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets. He will not break the crushed reed, nor put out the smouldering wick till he has led the truth to victory: in his name the nations will put their hope.

Meditation
In our world today, injustice and evil have become the order of the day in such a way that, whoever stands for justice or against evil is considered an enemy to the people. Jesus just finished a good act by healing someone paralysed and administering justice on the laws of the Sabbath in saving a life. His reward from the people was death. The first reading condemns people like the Pharisees who plot evil against others. These type of people will not escape the justice of God. All servants of God must be wise enough and know how to protect themselves against such people. They must be able to move away from evil men and places not good for their mission. Finally, they must know that God’s spirit is with them to protect Them.

St. Bonaventure, bishop
and doctor
(1218 – 1274)
He became a Franciscan in 1243 and studied philosophy and theology at the University of Paris. He became a famous teacher and philosopher, part of the extraordinary intellectual flowering of the 13th century. He was a friend and colleague of St Thomas Aquinas.

In the midst of the Church he opened his mouth, and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding and clothed him in a robe of glory.

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that, just as we celebrate the heavenly birthday of the Bishop Saint Bonaventure, we may benefit from his great learning and constantly imitate the ardour of his charity. Meditation
Today we record the conflict between Jesus and the Pharisees regarding the Sabbath and its respect. They have been looking for a means to get to Him. Jesus’ disciples give them a chance to attack Him. Little did they know that Jesus is God. He reminded them that there is something greater than the temple and that the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. The temple is just a house and without the presence of God, there is nothing holy about it. With Jesus, there is something greater than the temple because He is the true temple. In Him and through Him, God made Himself visible, God lives among us. What is important is not the physical but the spiritual.

Meditation
In today’s gospel, Jesus calls us to meditate on the virtue of humility. He is the model of humility as He says “Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart.” The humility of Jesus reveals to us the humility of God who never seeks to put us down, but always wants to raise us to be His worthy children. The humility of God does not prevent Him from being God. Our humility does not reduce anything from our person, but adds more value to our person. When we learn from God, He gives us the genuine example and with such an example, we shall discover how light our burdens will become. With Jesus, we see the mercy of God in carrying our crosses as He carried His cross for our sake.

He was born in Bavaria in 973. He became Holy Roman Emperor in 1014. He was noted for his support for the reform of the Church and for his encouragement of its missionary activity. He set up many bishoprics, and he and his wife Cunegunda founded many monasteries. He died in 1024.

Meditation
From the act of praise, we learn from the Master that in the midst of challenges and difficulties, we have to thank God. God’s kingdom is grasped, not by proud intellectuals but by humble souls who seek the Lord. This does not mean that the wise and intelligent will not be saved. The problem is that in most cases, they guide themselves not by God’s wisdom, but by their feats and knowledge. Happy are the poor in spirit and the meek for they shall have the kingdom of God for their reward.
