(1890 – 1902)
She was an 11years old girl from a poor peasant family in Italy. She was naturally pious, kind, helpful and beautiful. In 1902 an eighteen-year-old neighbor, Alexander, tried to rape her. When Maria resisted, Alexander stabbed her 14 times. She forgave her murderer on her dead bed and died in the afternoon of 6th July, 1902.

Jesus summoned his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to cast them out and to cure all kinds of diseases and sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, the one who was to betray him. Meditation
As Jesus’ words and deeds spread, He forms the group of twelve to collaborate in spreading of the Good News. This is the same group (Apostles) that Jesus will hand over His body, the Church. They are the new witnesses of Jesus among the people. He called and sent them to the Jewish nation. He called the twelve so that the Jewish nation should be integrated into twelve tribes. They were to be the foundation of the new people God will form. The Apostles are the Church’s foundation stones. Today, as we celebrate the call of the Apostles, let us remember to pray for all the Bishops who are the Apostles’ successors. We all have apostolates in the Church, but no one makes himself an apostles. This is why we need to pray for those the Church has made apostles.

The Dedication
of the Basilica
of St. Mary Major
The Council of Ephesus in 431 formally proclaimed the mother of Jesus as the Mother of God, and the church (basilica) of St Mary Major on the Esquiline Hill in Rome was built shortly afterwards to celebrate her motherhood. This is the oldest church in the West that is dedicated to Our Lady.

Meditation
In our Gospel today, Jesus lays down the basic requirements of Christian discipleship: self-renunciation and acceptance of suffering, two vital elements which are largely absent in the lives of many contemporary Christians. Christ by his very life gave an unparalleled example of both. On this note, genuine Christian discipleship necessarily demands ascetic self-denial. Thus, we are called to surrender our will and ambitions to God. Herein lies the dialectic of the Christian mystery: it is in losing our lives that we gain it, and in self-denial we attain true self-discovery. When we repudiate our will and embrace God, we will be confident to give account of our stewardship on the Day of Judgment, and the message of peace which the prophet Nahum proclaimed will be incarnated in our lives as God’s children.

(1786 – 1859)
He was the son of a peasant farmer, and a slow and unpromising candidate for the priesthood. He was eventually ordained on account of his devoutness rather than any achievement or promise. He was a noted preacher, and a celebrated confessor.

Meditation
“You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church.” Christ built His Church upon a rock, a lasting foundation, for He knew that storms would arise. He equally promised that the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. This implies that the Church has enemies that fight against it. These are the powers and policies of the devil’s kingdom, the dragon’s head and horns, by which he makes war with the Lamb. They fight the church by opposing gospel truths, persecuting good ministers and good Christians. Christ the Head assures us that these enemies shall not gain their point. While the world stands, the Church must stand to preach the Gospel in it in spite of all the opposition of the powers of hell.

Bernardino Realino
(1530 – 1616)
He was a Jesuit of Italy. St. Bernardino won widespread recognition as a result of his ceaseless apostolic labors. He was a model confessor, a powerful preacher, a diligent teacher of the Faith to the young, a dedicated shepherd of souls. His kindness brought about the end of vendettas and public scandals that cropped up from time to time.

Meditation
The disciples of many Rabbi have fasting as part of their tradition which was not the case with the Master and His own disciples. Jesus made it clear to them that as long as the bridegroom is still with the guests at a wedding party, there is no need for people not to rejoice and be happy. When you are with Jesus, you must be happy. He wants us to be happy with Him because that us one of the reasons God created us. Jesus knew His mission and how it was going to end. He told the disciples clearly that when He will be taken away from them, then there will be need for fasting but now, let them enjoy His presence.

When the city of Rome had been devastated by fire in the year 64, the Emperor Nero launched a persecution against the Christians, who were thrown to the wild beasts in the arena or soaked in tar and used as living torches. Their deaths are documented in the writings of the Roman historian Tacitus and in Pope St Clement’s letter to the Corinthians.

Now, which of these is easier to say, “Your sins are forgiven,” or to say, “Get up and walk”? But to prove to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,’ – he said to the paralytic – ‘get up, and pick up your bed and go off home.’ And the man got up and went home. A feeling of awe came over the crowd when they saw this, and they praised God for giving such power to men.

Meditation
In the face of the necessities of human life, Jesus allows his divine identity to reveal itself: ‘My child, your sins are forgiven you’. The Jews know very well that only God forgives sins. By using this prerogative Jesus tells them in other words that he is God. Their lack of faith and their rejection of this identity makes them see these words as blasphemy, and after Jesus perfoms a miracle, fear invades their hearts. Our interpretation of God’s works is diluted when we fail to believe in him and the wonders he performs in our lives and those of our loved ones. Without faith, these wonders do not bring joy and peace but for fear. May we ask Jesus to increase our faith, so that we may always recognise him as God’s Son and be his witnesses among men.

In the face of the necessities of human life, Jesus allows his divine identity to reveal itself: ‘My child, your sins are forgiven you’. The Jews know very well that only God forgives sins. By using this prerogative Jesus tells them in other words that he is God. Their lack of faith and their rejection of this identity makes them see these words as blasphemy, and after Jesus perfoms a miracle, fear invades their hearts. Our interpretation of God’s works is diluted when we fail to believe in him and the wonders he performs in our lives and those of our loved ones. Without faith, these wonders do not bring joy and peace but for fear. May we ask Jesus to increase our faith, so that we may always recognise him as God’s Son and be his witnesses among men.
