St. John Baptist de la Salle
(1651 – 1719)
He was born in Rheims in France in 1651. He and his colleagues formed the the Brothers of the Christian Schools, in whose cause he suffered many tribulations. He died in Rouen in 1719.

Christ is mediator of a New Covenant, so that by means of his death, those who are called may receive the promise of an eternal inheritance.

Be near, O Lord, to those who plead before you, and look kindly on those who place their hope in your mercy, that, cleansed from the stain of their sins, they may persevere in holy living and be made full heirs of your promise. Gospel : John 8:51-59

Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead, and yet you say, “Whoever keeps my word will never know the taste of death.” Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? The prophets are dead too. Meditation
To our world the concept of man’s existence is thought of in terms of birth and death. We are born some day and we die someday. But Christ, never dies, because as God, he is always ever present. Man continues to prove that he does not know the Father and does everything to deceive himself. He has not learnt from the world wars, from the failed attempts of science, etc. What foolishness! Let us rely on the ‘I Am’ in all circumstances of our lives and He will deliver us from the shackles of the evil manipulator and the stupidity of mankind. We ask for the grace to have greater knowledge of the one ‘Who is always present’, the ‘I AM’ of every age; may we acknowledge His presence and live worthy lives.

St. William of Eskilsoe
He was born in 1125 and was a French religious who willingly led a life with few A. He spent many hours in prayer and became a scholar of religious law. An account written after his death described him as “famous for his life and miracles.” He died in 1203.

My deliverer from angry nations, you set me above my assailants; you saved me from the violent man, O Lord.

Enlighten, O God of compassion, the hearts of your children, sanctified by penance, and in your kindness, grant those you stir to a sense of devotion, a gracious hearing when they cry out to you. First reading : Daniel 3:14-20,24-25,28
King Nebuchadnezzar said, ‘Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, is it true that you do not serve my gods, and that you refuse to worship the golden statue I have erected? When you hear the sound of horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, or any other instrument, are you prepared to prostrate yourselves and worship the statue I have made? If you refuse to worship it, you must be thrown straight away into the burning fiery furnace; and where is the god who could save you from my power?’ Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to King Nebuchadnezzar, ‘Your question hardly requires an answer: if our God, the one we serve, is able to save us from the burning fiery furnace and from your power, O king, he will save us; and even if he does not, then you must know, O king, that we will not serve your god or worship the statue you have erected.’ These words infuriated King Nebuchadnezzar; his expression was very different now as he looked at Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Then King Nebuchadnezzar sprang to his feet in amazement. He said to his advisers, ‘Did we not have these three men thrown bound into the fire?’ They replied, ‘Certainly, O king.’ ‘But,’ he went on ‘I can see four men walking about freely in the heart of the fire without coming to any harm. And the fourth looks like a son of the gods.’ Nebuchadnezzar exclaimed, ‘Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego: he has sent his angel to rescue the servants who, putting their trust in him, defied the order of the king, and preferred to forfeit their bodies rather than serve or worship any god but their own.’

Meditation
We all want to know the truth, but it is very difficult to be truthful sometimes. This drives us sometimes to indulge in what we mostly refer to as ‘small lies’, being pretentious or what some have referred to as ‘white lies’. And so, the sin of lying enslaves us. It is the same spirit that makes us not to acknowledge God’s word in us. We are too lazy to admit the truth about ourselves and others. We have developed many platforms for injecting these ‘lies’ into the society just to achieve our selfish purposes, without taking into consideration the harm it may cause, even when human lives are involved. We have developed what we may refer to as ‘slanted truth’. When truth is slanted, it no longer achieves the purpose for which it should have served. It is simply a rejection of Christ because He is Truth.

He was born in Valencia and joined the Dominicans at the age of 17.Among others, he preached to the Jews, of whom some 25,000 were converted to Christianity. He died in 5 April 1419.

Meditation
If we do not believe that Jesus is the one sent by the Father, then just like Jesus says in the Gospel, we shall die in our sins. Since we cannot save ourselves, we will die in our sinful ways if we reject him. However, we can continue to look upon Him as the Israelites did and live, if we accept that the Father is with us as He is with Him. Instead of offending Him with our numerous sinful ways, let us do things that please Him. May we leave our past sinful lives behind, look at Jesus on the cross especially in these difficult times and ask for pardon, and we will live and be healed of our diseases and complex situations of life.

St. Isidore of Sevile
He was born in Spain in c. 560. As Archbishop of Seville, he was prolific in his writings and diligent in governing the Church, Isidore did not neglect the service of those in need. St. Isidore of Seville died on April 4 of the year 636.

First reading : Daniel 13:41-62
Susanna was condemned to death. She cried out as loud as she could, ‘Eternal God, you know all secrets and everything before it happens; you know that they have given false evidence against me. And now have I to die, innocent as I am of everything their malice has invented against me?’ The Lord heard her cry and, as she was being led away to die, he roused the holy spirit residing in a young boy named Daniel who began to shout, ‘I am innocent of this woman’s death!’ At which all the people turned to him and asked, ‘What do you mean by these words?’ Standing in the middle of the crowd he replied, ‘Are you so stupid, sons of Israel, as to condemn a daughter of Israel unheard, and without troubling to find out the truth? Go back to the scene of the trial: these men have given false evidence against her.’
All the people hurried back, and the elders said to Daniel, ‘Come and sit with us and tell us what you mean, since God has given you the gifts that elders have.’ Daniel said, ‘Keep the men well apart from each other for I want to question them.’ When the men had been separated, Daniel had one of them brought to him. ‘You have grown old in wickedness,’ he said ‘and now the sins of your earlier days have overtaken you, you with your unjust judgements, your condemnation of the innocent, your acquittal of guilty men, when the Lord has said, “You must not put the innocent and the just to death.” Now then, since you saw her so clearly, tell me what tree you saw them lying under?’ He replied, ‘Under a mastic tree.’ Daniel said, ‘True enough! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God has already received your sentence from him and will slash you in half.’ He dismissed the man, ordered the other to be brought and said to him, ‘Spawn of Canaan, not of Judah, beauty has seduced you, lust has led your heart astray! This is how you have been behaving with the daughters of Israel and they were too frightened to resist; but here is a daughter of Judah who could not stomach your wickedness! Now then, tell me what tree you surprised them under?’ He replied, ‘Under a holm oak.’ Daniel said, ‘True enough! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God is waiting, with a sword to drive home and split you, and destroy the pair of you.’ Then the whole assembly shouted, blessing God, the saviour of those who trust in him. And they turned on the two elders whom Daniel had convicted of false evidence out of their own mouths. As prescribed in the Law of Moses, they sentenced them to the same punishment as they had intended to inflict on their neighbour. They put them to death; the life of an innocent woman was spared that day.

You judge by human standards; I judge no one, but if I judge, my judgement will be sound, because I am not alone: the one who sent me is with me; and in your Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is valid. Meditation
Just like many today, the leaders could not see, because they had no faith. Therefore, they asked Jesus: “Where is your Father?” Jesus treated the question as a rhetorical one. If they knew him, they would know the Father. We know God as our intimate Father because we believe in Jesus. The more we trust our Saviour, the closer we will come to the source of our being, our Father. Jesus is the perfect image of the Father. He was sent to the world to shed light upon it, so that the Jewish leaders, you, and I would see the light. If we know Him, we will walk in the light. Why do we not walk in that light today? We hear all sorts of things which, we are told, bring us the light. And just where do they all keep us? We come out more blind than when we went in. What light are we talking about? Faith in Jesus brings us true light.

Second reading : Philippians 3:8-14
I believe nothing can happen that will outweigh the supreme advantage of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For him I have accepted the loss of everything, and I look on everything as so much rubbish if only I can have Christ and be given a place in him. I am no longer trying for perfection by my own efforts, the perfection that comes from the Law, but I want only the perfection that comes through faith in Christ, and is from God and based on faith. All I want is to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and to share his sufferings by reproducing the pattern of his death. That is the way I can hope to take my place in the resurrection of the dead. Not that I have become perfect yet: I have not yet won, but I am still running, trying to capture the prize for which Christ Jesus captured me. I can assure you my brothers, I am far from thinking that I have already won. All I can say is that I forget the past and I strain ahead for what is still to come; I am racing for the finish, for the prize to which God calls us upwards to receive in Christ Jesus.

Gospel : John 8:1-11
Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as all the people came to him, he sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; and making her stand there in full view of everybody, they said to Jesus, ‘Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery, and Moses has ordered us in the Law to condemn women like this to death by stoning. What have you to say?’ They asked him this as a test, looking for something to use against him. But Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. As they persisted with their question, he looked up and said, ‘If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.’ Then he bent down and wrote on the ground again. When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained standing there. He looked up and said, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ ‘No one, sir’ she replied. ‘Neither do I condemn you,’ said Jesus ‘go away, and do not sin any more.’

Meditation
Whenever we look at the sinful woman, may we also see our own sins and weaknesses. We are haunted by guilt for our past sins, mistakes and failures like stealing, bribery, taking away life through different means, supporting such a cause, gossiping, and making light of life-threatening issues, infidelity to our spouses, using insulting language, mockery, etc. God is not after the sins we commit. He is after our power to change and to be good, so that our very lives may provide an example for others to follow. We remember the words of Cardinal Newman, who once wrote: “To live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often.” When we imploring God’s mercy, His answer will always be ‘go and sin no more’. St. Francis of Paola
(1436 – 1507)
He was born in Paola in Calabria. He founded the Order of Minims. He died on Good Friday, 2 April 1507, at Plessis in France.

The waves of death rose about me; the pains of the netherworld surrounded me. In my anguish I called to the Lord, and from his holy temple he heard my voice.

May the working of your mercy, O Lord, we pray, direct our hearts aright, for without your grace we cannot find favour in your sight. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Jeremiah 11:18-20
The Lord revealed it to me; I was warned. O Lord, that was when you opened my eyes to their scheming. I for my part was like a trustful lamb being led to the slaughter-house, not knowing the schemes they were plotting against me, ‘Let us destroy the tree in its strength, let us cut him off from the land of the living, so that his name may be quickly forgotten!’ But you, the Lord of Hosts, who pronounce a just sentence, who probe the loins and heart, let me see the vengeance you will take on them, for I have committed my cause to you.
Psalm 7:2-3,9-12
R/ Lord God, I take refuge in you.
- Lord God, I take refuge in you. From my pursuer save me and rescue me, lest he tear me to pieces like a lion and drag me off with no one to rescue me.
- Give judgement for me, Lord; I am just and innocent of heart. Put an end to the evil of the wicked! Make the just stand firm, you who test mind and heart, O just God!
- God is the shield that protects me, who saves the upright of heart. God is a just judge slow to anger; but he threatens the wicked every day.
Gospel Acclamation : Ezk33:11
Praise and honour to you, Lord Jesus! I take pleasure, not in the death of a wicked man – it is the Lord who speaks – but in the turning back of a wicked man who changes his ways to win life. Praise and honour to you, Lord Jesus!
Gospel : John 7:40-52
Several people who had been listening to Jesus said, ‘Surely he must be the prophet’, and some said, ‘He is the Christ’, but others said, ‘Would the Christ be from Galilee? Does not Scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from the town of Bethlehem?’ So the people could not agree about him. Some would have liked to arrest him, but no one actually laid hands on him. The police went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, ‘Why haven’t you brought him?’ The police replied, ‘There has never been anybody who has spoken like him.’ ‘So’ the Pharisees answered ‘you have been led astray as well? Have any of the authorities believed in him? Any of the Pharisees? This rabble knows nothing about the Law – they are damned.’ One of them, Nicodemus – the same man who had come to Jesus earlier – said to them, ‘But surely the Law does not allow us to pass judgement on a man without giving him a hearing and discovering what he is about?’ To this they answered, ‘Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets do not come out of Galilee.’
Prayer over the Offerings
Be pleased, O Lord, we pray, with these oblations you receive from our hands, and, even when our wills are defiant, constrain them mercifully to turn to you. Through Christ our Lord.

May your holy gifts purify us, O Lord, we pray, and by their working render us fully pleasing to you. Through Christ our Lord.
Prayer over the People
Look upon your people, O Lord, and, as they draw near to the coming festivities, bestow upon them abundance of heavenly grace, that, helped by the consolations of this world, they may be impelled more readily towards higher goods that cannot be seen. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Meditation
The Scripture is God’s guidance to mankind. We must be slow to judge and condemn others. Like the Pharisees did to Christ, many times we pass judgment with some prejudice in mind. Until we get rid of these prejudices, we would never make a fair judgment. This would also play out in our interpretation of Scripture, paving the way for unnecessary arguments. Each one of us is called to be a ‘Nicodemus’ wherever he/she may find themselves, bringing our friends to the right track, being slow to judge and condemn others. Scripture should never be used to pull others down or lead others astray through erroneous interpretation. We are invited to keep to the interpretation given to us by the teaching authority of the Church (Magisterium), so as not to be led astray.
