Meditation
Jesus faults the scribes and Pharisees particularly for their desire to impress others and their love of prestige and position. Such dangers also threaten Christians and Jesus warns us. Christians are to avoid titles that set them apart from, and above, others in the community of faith, not because the titles are unacceptable, but because of the assumption of superiority and elitism that so often go with them. The conduct of a Christian is to be characterised by the virtues of service and humility. Christians of every era and circumstance, especially those in leadership, must learn that true greatness consists in service and that self-humbling is the path to exaltation. Only by such a radical departure from the values and priorities of the world will Christians in authority be the disciples of the one Teacher and Lord.

Come to terms with your opponent in good time while you are still on the way to the court with him, or he may hand you over to the judge and the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. I tell you solemnly, you will not get out till you have paid the last penny.’

Meditation
Christian life requires much more than external conformity to regulations. This is why a person is held accountable for his/her angry thoughts, not merely for external acts of violence against others. Therefore, Jesus calls us to a wholehearted trust and obedience to the heavenly Father that radiates God’s love to the world. Jesus penetrates to the spirit of the commandment. Since the spring of a person’s conduct is the heart, or inner person, the transforming power of the kingdom must be especially experienced there. The worship and service of God cannot be performed as long as anger infects the soul. Thus, the recipient of the grace of the kingdom is one who initiates and seeks reconciliation, both with members of the Christian community and with adversaries.

St. Oswald
(-992)
In 972 he became Archbishop of York. He had a special love of the poor; in Lent he would wash the feet of twelve poor men every day. He died at Worcester on 28 February 992.

Meditation
The feast of St. Oswald, the saint of the poor, coincides with the gospel story of the command of Jesus to the rich young man. While the latter would respond to service of the poor by turning away, St. Oswald was noted for his great concern for the poor, and his constant availability to wash feet of the poor in the style of Christ. The challenge of our Christian calling is to detachourselves from material wealth and any other thing that comes between us and God, and to be ready to serve the poor and needy around us. May St. Oswald teach us to transform our material possessions into instruments for the service of the poor.

How can you say to your brother, “Brother, let me take out the splinter that is in your eye,” when you cannot see the plank in your own? Hypocrite! Take the plank out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take out the splinter that is in your brother’s eye. ‘There is no sound tree that produces rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree that produces sound fruit. Goodness cannot hide itself. The Creator from the beginning created all things good, wise and beautiful. He made all creatures great and wonderful, so that thw whole universe may be good. The readings of today’s liturgy invite us to uphold the goodness of God (for a good man draws what is good from the store in his heart) by working persistently for the glory of God, in order to flourish and gain the blessings of God. Let us strive to continue God’s goodness through the good work of our hands. This is thanksgiving of amazing grace!

St. Alexander
of Alexandria
(250 – 328)
Alexander played an important role in the growth of the catechetical school at Alexandria. He fought against the heretical teachings of Arius. He died in 328.

First reading : James 5:13-20
If any one of you is in trouble, he should pray; if anyone is feeling happy, he should sing a psalm. If one of you is ill, he should send for the elders of the church, and they must anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord and pray over him. The prayer of faith will save the sick man and the Lord will raise him up again; and if he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. So confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, and this will cure you; the heartfelt prayer of a good man works very powerfully. Elijah was a human being like ourselves – he prayed hard for it not to rain, and no rain fell for three-and-a-half years; then he prayed again and the sky gave rain and the earth gave crops. Meditation
Basic Christian teaching impacts fundamental truths of doctrines that are a sine qua non for the growth people of God. That’s why the catechetical school of Alexandria that was renowned for its faithful building is epitomized in the life of St. Alexander. The deposit of faith is grasped by developing the childlike nature that enables the unravelling of the mysteries of God’s kingdom. Therefore, adherence to Church doctrine, as contained for example in James’ call for apt attention towards the sick through the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is an obligation that needs a childlike faith.
