St Colman MacDuagh (632)
He was the son of an Irish chieftain. He was educated at Saint Enda’s monastery in the Aran Islands. Thereafter he was a recluse, living in prayer fasting. With the King of Connaught he founded the monastery of Kilmacduagh which he governed as abbot-bishop.

That is why you must rely on God’s armour, or you will not be able to put up any resistance when the worst happens, or have enough resources to hold your ground. So stand your ground, with truth buckled round your waist, and integrity for a breastplate, wearing for shoes on your feet the eagerness to spread the gospel of peace and always carrying the shield of faith so that you can use it to put out the burning arrows of the evil one. And then you must accept salvation from God to be your helmet and receive the word of God from the Spirit to use as a sword. Pray all the time, asking for what you need, praying in the Spirit on every possible occasion. Never get tired of staying awake to pray for all the saints; and pray for me to be given an opportunity to open my mouth and speak without fear and give out the mystery of the gospel of which I am an ambassador in chains; pray that in proclaiming it I may speak as boldly as I ought to.

Meditation
In the Christian life we battle against spiritual rulers and authorities (the powerful evil forces of fallen angels headed by Satan). To withstand their attacks, we must depend on God’s strength and grace and use every piece of his armour. Paul is not only giving this counsel to the church, the body of Christ but to all individuals within the church. The whole body needs to be armed. As you do battle against “the powers of this dark world”, fight with the strength of the church whose power comes from the Holy Spirit. Evil forces are also visible in structural evil. We should equally strive to overcome this.

Sts Simon and Jude, Apostles
Jude, also called Thaddaeus, is the apostle who at the Last Supper asked the Lord why he showed himself only to the disciples and not to the world. For many centuries he was scarcely venerated because people confused him with Judas Iscariot. He is the patron saint of lost and desperate causes.
Simon is eleventh in the list of the twelve Apostles. He is known as Simon the Zealot, but nothing else is known about him. His other name of “Simon Cananaeus” simply adapts another Hebrew word for “zeal” and has nothing to do with the town of Cana..

Meditation
The Catholic Church is maligned in many arenas. Our leaders are scorned in the media and hammered by the general public. Dissent from within the Church also plagues our leaders. Failures of Church leaders are trumpeted from every public forum, while their virtuous acts receive little notice. This is not much different from the time of Jesus. The apostles were “men of no standing” (Acts 4:13). They were “a spectacle to the universe,” “fools on Christ’s account,” “the world’s refuse, the scum of all” (1 Cor 4:9, 10, 13). Throughout history, Church leaders have had their failings. Many apologists note that the fact the Catholic Church still exists is proof that God leads the Church, for no institution with our failings and weaknesses could stand if God was not holding it up. Rejoice that you are resting upon the shoulders of the apostles and the bishops, the successors of the apostles.

He was abbot of Meath and later came to Iona. He died in 548 and his grave on Iona was greatly revered. As a result the Vikings chose Otteran, the titular guardian of their ancestors’ ashes, as patron of the city of Waterford in 1096. He is now patron saint of the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore.

Meditation
Submitting to another person is an often misunderstood concept. It does not mean becoming dormant. Christ, at whose name “every knee must bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth” (Phil 2:10), submitted his will to his Father and we know Christ by following hs example. When we submit to God we become more willing to obey his commands to submit to others, that is, to subordinate our rights to theirs. In a marriage relationship both husband and wife are called to submit. For the wife it means following her husband’s leadership in Christ. For the husband it means putting aside his own interest in order to care for his wife.

St Chad (672)
He became abbot of Lastingham and was chosen to be bishop of Northumbria, but St Wilfrid contested his appointment, and Chad obediently withdrew. He was then sent as bishop to Mercia, He died at Lichfield on 2 March 672 and was immediately revered as a saint because of the holiness of his life, his outstanding humility, and his dedication to preaching of the Gospel.

Come and be healed on one of those days and not on the sabbath.’ But the Lord answered him. ‘Hypocrites!’ he said ‘Is there one of you who does not untie his ox or his donkey from the manger on the sabbath and take it out for watering? Meditation
Rules are an important part of any religion or society. A wise Rabbi once said: “Everyone needs rules. If you want to see a miserable teenager find one who has no boundaries imposed on him.” But rules generally only make sense if one references their purpose. Otherwise they become entirely human artifacts that exist only for their own sake. Rules as understood and applied by the religious leader in the Gospel are entirely of the flesh; they do nothing to help us achieve the life of the spirit. The synagogue official’s error was that he lost sight of the purpose of the rule. The purpose of the rule forbidding Sabbath work was to allow everyone to glorify God at least one day a week. But understanding it as he did, it became a rule that would actually prevent one from glorifying God as Jesus did by healing the sick woman. As humans we all struggle with rules. We break and bend them, often for selfish reasons. But the greatest error is entirely losing sight of their purpose.

Meditation
In the Gospel of today, Jesus unites two key passages in the Old Testament to give a smooth synthesis of LOVE: “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord, and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your might” (Deut 6:4-5) and “You shall love your neighbour as yourself” (Lev 19:18; cf. Mk 12:29-31). How do we love God? By keeping his commandments found in the Sacred Scriptures especially as resumed in the Decalogue or Ten Commandments. But how do we love our neighbour? Still found in the New Testament, particularly in Mt 25, we can follow what the church calls the Corporal Works of mercy : To feed the hungry; To give drink to the thirsty; To clothe the naked; To harbour the harbourless; To visit the sick; To ransom the captive; To bury the dead. Jesus also teaches in the Parable of the Good Samaritan by encouraging us to love everyone, especially those who are in need, and even our enemies. After such beautiful readings in today’s liturgy, we are challenged to put this love into practice. This recommendation can be our litmus test: make a special effort to love the person whom you find it difficult to love.

Saint Antony Mary Claret (1807 – 1870)

He was born in 1807 and ordained priest in 1835. His uncompromising preaching raised hostility against him. In 1849 he founded a missionary institute of priests: Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Claretian Missionaries). He antagonized the slave owners, and attempts were made on his life. In 1868, revolution caused him to go into exile in France, where he died in 1870.

The one who rose higher than all the heavens to fill all things is none other than the one who descended. Meditation
The gospel offers the parable of the fig tree. The owner saw the tree as useless since it hadn’t produced fruit. But the gardener begged him to spare the tree so that he could spend more time to attend to the tree’s needs of nourishment and care. Is this not how God views us? Perhaps in others’ or our own view, we are discouraged…we give up hope of growing into God’s spirit and we are ready to throw in the towel. We are tired – we don’t know where to turn for hope as we struggle with our worries of the day. But God says, ‘…no wait…perhaps with more care… you will bear fruit…become more of who you are and can be.’ We are in God’s spirit and God’s spirit is within us. But how do we work with the spirit of God? By not turning our back on the living/dynamic presence of the spirit? How do we assist others and ourselves to see that spirit Within? Of course, this is by breathing life into our sagging spirit to burn with God’s life.
