St. Walfrid
He was born in Pisa. He married and had five sons and at least one daughter. After a time, they decided to follow the Benedictine Rule of Monte Casino. St. Walfrid’s cult was confirmed in 1861.

Jeroboam thought to himself, ‘As things are, the kingdom will revert to the House of David. If this people continues to go up to the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem to offer sacrifices, the people’s heart will turn back again to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will put me to death.’ So the king thought this over and then made two golden calves; he said to the people, ‘You have been going up to Jerusalem long enough. Here are your gods, Israel; these brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’ He set up one in Bethel and the people went in procession all the way to Dan in front of the other. He set up the temple of the high places and appointed priests from ordinary families, who were not of the sons of Levi. Jeroboam also instituted a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth of the month, like the feast that was kept in Judah, and he went up to the altar. That was how he behaved in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made; and at Bethel he put the priests of the high places he had established. Jeroboam did not give up his wicked ways but went on appointing priests for the high places from the common people. He consecrated as priests of the high places any who wished to be. Such conduct made the House of Jeroboam a sinful House, and caused its ruin and extinction from the face of the earth.

- Our sin is the sin of our fathers; we have done wrong, our deeds have been evil. Our fathers when they were in Egypt paid no heed to your wonderful deeds.

A great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat. If I send them off home hungry they will collapse on the way; some have come a great distance.’ His disciples replied, ‘Where could anyone get bread to feed these people in a deserted place like this?’ He asked them, ‘How many loaves have you?’ ‘Seven’ they said. Then he instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves, and after giving thanks he broke them and handed them to his disciples to distribute; and they distributed them among the crowd. They had a few small fish as well, and over these he said a blessing and ordered them to be distributed also. They ate as much as they wanted, and they collected seven basketfuls of the scraps left over. Now there had been about four thousand people. Meditation
Jesus recognises the need of the people who have been with him for three days without food. He decides to come to their rescue in spite of his meagre resources – seven loaves of bread and a few small fish. What is that for a multitude? It looks most insignificant. However, we are told that Jesus multiplies the bread and the fish, so much so that after the people have eaten, there are seven baskets full of scraps! This means that when we share with our brothers and sisters, even the small thing that we have becomes much. Of course, God replenishes our sources when we take care of his needy children. We are therefore called to share with our brothers and sisters without counting the cost.

Meditation
It is interesting that Jesus is asked simply to lay his hands on the dumb and deaf man and he decides to take him away from the crowd and then goes through a detailed ritual of healing, very much unlike the case of the ten lepers, whom he simply asks to go and show themselves to the priest. At the end of the healing session, Jesus wants the matter to remain a secret, but the more he wants it a secret the more people talk about it. In all of this, one thing is clear: Whether Jesus heals in public or in secret, he does not want to draw attention to himself; he wants to give glory to his Father. In all the good we do, we need to give glory to God, who inspires and sustains all the good that we do.

Saint Catherine de Ricci (1522 – 1589)

Catherine was born Alexandrina in 1522 in Florence, Italy. Catherine entered a convent at Prat in Tuscany and became known for her great sanctity. She is known for her “Ecstasy of the Passion, which she experienced from noon on Thursday till four o’clock on Friday.

Meditation
The beginning of the conversation between Jesus and the Syrophoenician woman sounds somewhat discriminating and discouraging. However, Jesus’ statement – ‘The children should be fed first, because it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house-dogs’ – indicates that there is an open door to welcome house-dogs or outsiders to the same table on which the children are fed. The woman is quite quick to see through the logic and what from the outset looked like discouragement becomes an invitation and encouragement. Jesus welcomes her expression of faith and grants her request. What attitude or pastoral approach do we adopt towards those who do not share the Catholic faith with us?

Buonfiglio is one of the several Florentine founders of the Servite Order (Servants of Mary) who took up a life of solitude and prayer. These founders were canonized in 1887 by Pope Leo XIII.

When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon, the palace he had built, the food at his table, the accommodation for his officials, the organisation of his staff and the way they were dressed, his cup-bearers, and the holocausts he offered in the Temple of the Lord, it left her breathless, and she said to the king, ‘What I heard in my own country about you and your wisdom was true, then! Until I came and saw it with my own eyes I could not believe what they told me, but clearly they told me less than half: for wisdom and prosperity you surpass the report I heard. How happy your wives are! How happy are these servants of yours who wait on you always and hear your wisdom! Blessed be the Lord your God who has granted you his favour, setting you on the throne of Israel! Meditation
No normal person eats what he/she judges ‘unclean’. By the process of selection, nobody eats anything unclean. Even a mad man selects from the dustbin that which suits his taste. That is why Jesus says it is not what we eat that makes us unclean but what is conceived in us and finds outward expression in different ways. We have the freedom to conceive good as well as bad ideas. When we choose to conceive bad ideas, they contaminate us and make us unclean. Jesus invites us to make an honest effort to conceive good ideas and evade the bad ones, for by so doing, we seek to remain salt of the earth and light of the world.

Our Lady of Lourdes
In 1858 the Immaculate Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous, near Lourdes in France, in the cavern called “de Massabielle.”Through her, Mary calls on sinners to change their lives.

Gospel : Mark 7:1-13
The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered round Jesus, and they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them. For the Pharisees, and the Jews in general, follow the tradition of the elders and never eat without washing their arms as far as the elbow; and on returning from the market place they never eat without first sprinkling themselves. There are also many other observances which have been handed down to them concerning the washing of cups and pots and bronze dishes. So these Pharisees and scribes asked him, ‘Why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the elders but eat their food with unclean hands?’ He answered, ‘It was of you hypocrites that Isaiah so rightly prophesied in this passage of scripture: This people honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me. The worship they offer me is worthless, the doctrines they teach are only human regulations. You put aside the commandment of God to cling to human traditions.’ And he said to them, ‘How ingeniously you get round the commandment of God in order to preserve your own tradition! For Moses said: Do your duty to your father and your mother, and, Anyone who curses father or mother must be put to death. But you say, “If a man says to his father or mother: Anything I have that I might have used to help you is Corban (that is, dedicated to God), then he is forbidden from that moment to do anything for his father or mother.” In this way you make God’s word null and void for the sake of your tradition which you have handed down. And you do many other things like this.’

Receive, O Lord, we ask, the prayers of your people with the sacrificial offerings, that, through the intercession of Blessed Mary, the Mother of your Son, no petition may go unanswered, no request be made in vain. Through Christ our Lord.

As we receive this heavenly Sacrament, we beseech, O Lord, your mercy, that we, who rejoice in commemorating the Blessed Virgin Mary, may by imitating her serve worthily the mystery of our redemption. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Nowadays, there is so much talk about handwashing. A day has even been set aside as the World Day of Handwashing. This seeks to help people to adopt the practice of handwashing so as to avoid bacteria intake. What purpose would it serve, if we wash our hands and eat food that has not been properly prepared? In the Gospel passage, Jesus stresses the point that our material hygiene needs to agree with our spiritual hygiene, our outward cleanliness with our inward purity. Today, therefore, we pray for the grace to live authentic lives, following in the footsteps of Jesus himself.

St Scholastica (480 – 547)
She was born in Nursia in about 480, the twin sister of St Benedict. She was dedicated to God from an early age and followed her brother to Cassino, where she died in about 547.

First reading : 1 Kings 8:1-7,9-13
Solomon called the elders of Israel together in Jerusalem to bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord up from the Citadel of David, which is Zion. All the men of Israel assembled round King Solomon in the month of Ethanim, at the time of the feast (that is, the seventh month), and the priests took up the ark and the Tent of Meeting with all the sacred vessels that were in it. In the presence of the ark, King Solomon and all Israel sacrificed sheep and oxen, countless, innumerable. The priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place, in the Debir of the Temple, that is, in the Holy of Holies, under the cherubs’ wings. For there where the ark was placed the cherubs spread out their wings and sheltered the ark and its shafts. There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets Moses had placed in it at Horeb, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord had made with the Israelites when they came out of the land of Egypt; they are still there today. Now when the priests came out of the sanctuary, the cloud filled the Temple of the Lord, and because of the cloud the priests could no longer perform their duties: the glory of the Lord filled the Lord’s Temple. Then Solomon said: ‘The Lord has chosen to dwell in the thick cloud. Yes, I have built you a dwelling, a place for you to live in forever.’

Meditation
From the Gospel passage, I can visualise a longing to encounter Jesus. This rush comes from the faith of the people in Jesus, a faith that is expressed by the sick and those who care for them. We are told all those who touched Jesus were cured. Some of us have the fortune of touching Jesus on a daily basis in the Eucharist. What kind of faith do we have in Jesus? We need to believe wholly and only in Jesus. As he cured those touched him in Gennesaret, so will he cure us who touch him daily in the Eucharist.
