First reading : 1 John 5:5-13
Who can overcome the world? Only the man who believes that Jesus is the Son of God: Jesus Christ who came by water and blood, not with water only, but with water and blood; with the Spirit as another witness since the Spirit is the truth so that there are three witnesses, the Spirit, the water and the blood, and all three of them agree. We accept the testimony of human witnesses, but God’s testimony is much greater, and this is God’s testimony, given as evidence for his Son. Everybody who believes in the Son of God has this testimony inside him; and anyone who will not believe God is making God out to be a liar, because he has not trusted the testimony God has given about his Son. This is the testimony: God has given us eternal life and this life is in his Son; anyone who has the Son has life, anyone who does not have the Son does not have life. Gospel Luke: 5:12-16
Jesus was in one of the towns when a man appeared, covered with leprosy. Seeing Jesus he fell on his face and implored him. ‘Sir,’ he said ‘if you want to, you can cure me.’ Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him and said, ‘Of course I want to! Be cured!’ And the leprosy left him at once. He ordered him to tell no one, ‘But go and show yourself to the priest and make the offering for your healing as Moses prescribed it, as evidence for them.’ His reputation continued to grow, and large crowds would gather to hear him and to have their sickness cured, but he would always go off to some place where he could be alone and pray.

Meditation
In the Jewish community, any skin disease rendered the sufferer unclean. He was banished from the fellowship of people. He had to dwell alone outside the camp. He had to go about with rent clothes, a bared head, a covering upon his upper lip, and as he went he had to give warning of his polluted presence with the cry: ‘Unclean, Unclean!’ The leper had not only to bear the physical pain of his disease, he had to also bear the mental anguish and the heart break of being completely banished from human society. In the gospel this morning, Jesus cures a leper. Jesus stretched out his hands, touched him and said: “I do will it. Be cured.” Jesus risked contamination and condemnation because he knew that real healing comes through involvement (not rejection and condemnation) and the willingness to risk touching others in a caring and loving way. As Jesus did, so we are all to do for one another, touching the lives of others.

Meditation
In the gospel today, Jesus is back in Nazareth and attends the Sabbath Service. An official of the synagogue could invite any willing adult Jewish man to read the Scripture of the day and deliver a homily on it. The reading of a definitive book is determined by the season, but the scripture passage to be read in order to deliver a homily is left to the choice of the preacher. Today Jesus accepts this invitation. And he is about to start his public life also. Before he does, he presents to the people the program of his ministry. He tells the people who he is, that he is the Anointed One, the Christ and the Messiah and what he wants to do. Jesus comes to proclaim the Good News of salvation; to free us from the captivity of sin; to open our eyes and free us from spiritual blindness.

Nathalan, or Nachlan or Nauchlan, was born in the village of Tullich (now in Aberdeenshire), for which he was eventually appointed bishop. As well as the church in Tullich, he also built churches at Bothelim and Colle. He possessed a large estate, which he cultivated and distributed his harvest generously to the poor. He was one of the apostles of the region.

Meditation
The gospel tells us about the disciples of Jesus struggling against a strong wind while Jesus was in the mountain alone praying to God after He dismissed the crowd. One interpretation is passage is that the Christian community of disciples is in the boat of the Church struggling against the wind of the darkness of sin, abandonment, of God’s absence when in trouble. It seems that in moments like this stormy weather of our faith God is absent, silent, far away and prayers seem not heard. But Jesus is telling us that this is a test of our faith; we need to have a faith that is ready to trust, because even in those dark moments God knows what we are going through. He is near to us and He is not a ghost. So the first thing that we should do is pray.

Meditation
Today’s gospel passage is about the multiplication of the loaves. This is the only miracle that Jesus did which is repeated in all four gospels. A crowd gathered to hear Jesus because no doubt they were hungry for God’s word. After Jesus preached, His disciples wanted to send them away because they did not have the resources to feed them. But Jesus took the little they had which were five loaves and two fish, gave thanks to the Father and distributed to all until they were satisfied of their hunger. This feeding shows the remarkable generosity of God and His great kindness towards us. He gives more than what we need for ourselves, that we may have something to share with others, especially those who lack what they need. God takes the little we have and multiplies it for the good of others.

Hearing that John had been arrested, Jesus went back to Galilee, and leaving Nazareth he went and settled in Capernaum, a lakeside town on the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali. In this way the prophecy of Isaiah was to be fulfilled: ‘Land of Zebulun! Land of Naphtali! Way of the sea on the far side of Jordan, Galilee of the nations! The people that lived in darkness has seen a great light; on those who dwell in the land and shadow of death a light has dawned.’ From that moment Jesus began his preaching with the message, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.’ He went round the whole of Galilee teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Good News of the kingdom and curing all kinds of diseases and sickness among the people. His fame spread throughout Syria, and those who were suffering from diseases and painful complaints of one kind or another, the possessed, epileptics, the paralyzed, were all brought to him, and he cured them. Large crowds followed him, coming from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judaea and Transjordania.

Meditation
In the gospel today, Jesus has grown up already. He leaves His hometown, Nazareth and begins His public ministry in Galilee. The enemies of John the Baptist had silenced him but the gospel cannot be silenced. As soon as John had finished his testimony, Jesus begins His ministry in Galilee. His message consists of a command: “Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Jesus comes to preach the gospel. He came to tell us the truth about God. His preaching is spontaneous, warmth, a simple directness and a depth of reality. This is all because of His intimate knowledge and union with God. Therefore, He preaches to defeat people’s ignorance about the truth of God.

Meditation
The word ‘Epiphany’ originates from Greek and means manifestation of the divine. It can also refer to a moment of revelation, the presence of God in human history. According to Western Christianity, the feast of Epiphany celebrates the Three Kings, also known as Magi, following the star of Bethlehem to visit the baby Jesus. The Oxford English Dictionary says Epiphany represents “the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi” in the Bible. The gospel of today describes how the kings followed the star and brought Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. For Eastern Orthodox churches, the Epiphany commemorates the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the River Jordan, seen as his manifestation as the Son of God.
