Grant your faithful, we pray, almighty God, the resolve to run forth to meet your Christ with righteous deeds at his coming, so that, gathered at his right hand, they may be worthy to possess the heavenly kingdom. First reading : Isaiah 2:1-5
The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz, concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In the days to come shall tower above the mountains and be lifted higher than the hills. All the nations will stream to it, peoples without number will come to it; and they will say: ‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the Temple of the God of Jacob that he may teach us his ways so that we may walk in his paths; since the Law will go out from Zion, and the oracle of the Lord from Jerusalem.’ He will wield authority over the nations and adjudicate between many peoples; these will hammer their swords into ploughshares, their spears into sickles. Nation will not lift sword against nation, there will be no more training for war. O House of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord.

Second reading : Romans 13:11-14
You know ‘the time’ has come: you must wake up now: our salvation is even nearer than it was when we were converted. The night is almost over, it will be daylight soon – let us give up all the things we prefer to do under cover of the dark; let us arm ourselves and appear in the light. Let us live decently as people do in the daytime: no drunken orgies, no promiscuity or licentiousness, and no wrangling or jealousy. Let your armour be the Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospel : Matthew 24:37-44
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘As it was in Noah’s day, so will it be when the Son of Man comes. For in those days before the Flood people were eating, drinking, taking wives, taking husbands, right up to the day Noah went into the ark, and they suspected nothing till the Flood came and swept all away. It will be like this when the Son of Man comes. Then of two men in the fields one is taken, one left; of two women at the millstone grinding, one is taken, one left. ‘So stay awake, because you do not know the day when your master is coming. You may be quite sure of this, that if the householder had known at what time of the night the burglar would come, he would have stayed awake and would not have allowed anyone to break through the wall of his house. Therefore, you too must stand ready because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.’

Accept, we pray, O Lord, these offerings we make, gathered from among your gifts to us, and may what you grant us to celebrate devoutly here below gain for us the prize of eternal redemption. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
The English word “Advent” is a derivation from the Latin “adventus” which means “coming”. It is also a translation of the Greek Parousia, normally used in reference to the second coming of Christ. It is for us Christians a season of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus at Christmas. The season of Advent serves us as a reminder of the original waiting of the Jews for the birth of their Messiah, as well as the Christian celebration of Jesus’ first coming and awaiting of his return. In between these two comings is also the encounter with the risen Jesus in the Word, in thet sacraments and in one another. The prophet Isaiah and the evangelist Matthew are our main guides through this period. They call us to a life of watchfulness.

Donne à tes fidèles, Dieu tout-puissant, d’aller avec courage sur les chemins de la justice à la rencontre du Seigneur, Pour qu’ils soient appelés, lors du jugement, à entrer en possession du royaume des cieux. Par Jésus Christ, ton Fils, notre Seigneur et notre Dieu, qui règne avec toi et le Saint-Esprit, maintenant et pour les siècles des siècles. Amen.
1ère lecture : Is 2, 1-5
Parole d’Isaïe, – ce qu’il a vu au sujet de Juda et de Jérusalem. Il arrivera dans les derniers jours que la montagne de la maison du Seigneur se tiendra plus haut que les monts, s’élèvera au-dessus des collines. Vers elle afflueront toutes les nations et viendront des peuples nombreux. Ils diront : « Venez ! montons à la montagne du Seigneur, à la maison du Dieu de Jacob ! Qu’il nous enseigne ses chemins, et nous irons par ses sentiers. » Oui, la loi sortira de Sion, et de Jérusalem, la parole du Seigneur. Il sera juge entre les nations et l’arbitre de peuples nombreux. De leurs épées, ils forgeront des socs, et de leurs lances, des faucilles. Jamais nation contre nation ne lèvera l’épée ; ils n’apprendront plus la guerre. Venez, maison de Jacob ! Marchons à la lumière du Seigneur.

- Quelle joie quand on m’a dit: « Nous irons à la maison du Seigneur!» Maintenant notre marche prend fin devant tes portes, Jérusalem !
- Jérusalem, te voici dans tes murs : ville où tout ensemble ne fait qu’un! C’est là que montent les tribus, les tribus du Seigneur.
- C’est là qu’Israël doit rendre grâce au nom du Seigneur. C’est là le siège du droit, le siège de la maison de David.
- Appelez le bonheur sur Jérusalem: «Paix à ceux qui t’aiment ! Que la paix règne dans tes murs, le bonheur dans tes palais! »
- À cause de mes frères et de mes proches, je dirai : « Paix sur toi ! » À cause de la maison du Seigneur notre Dieu, je désire ton bien.
2ème lecture : Rm 13, 11-14a
Frères, vous le savez : c’est le moment, l’heure est déjà venue de sortir de votre sommeil. Car le salut est plus près de nous maintenant qu’à l’époque où nous sommes devenus croyants. La nuit est bientôt finie, le jour est tout proche. Rejetons les œuvres des ténèbres, revêtons-nous des armes de la lumière. Conduisons-nous honnêtement, comme on le fait en plein jour, sans orgies ni beuveries, sans luxure ni débauches, sans rivalité ni jalousie, mais revêtez-vous du Seigneur Jésus Christ.

Alléluia. Alléluia Fais-nous voir, Seigneur, ton amour, et donne-nous ton salut. Alléluia. (Ps 84, 8)
Évangile : Mt 24, 37-44
En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples: « Comme il en fut aux jours de Noé, ainsi en sera-t-il lors de la venue du Fils de l’homme. En ces jours-là, avant le déluge, on mangeait et on buvait, on prenait femme et on prenait mari, jusqu’au jour où Noé entra dans l’arche ; les gens ne se sont doutés de rien, jusqu’à ce que survienne le déluge qui les a tous engloutis : telle sera aussi la venue du Fils de l’homme. Alors deux hommes seront aux champs : l’un sera pris, l’autre laissé. Deux femmes seront au moulin en train de moudre : l’une sera prise, l’autre laissée. Veillez donc, car vous ne savez pas quel jour votre Seigneur vient. Comprenez-le bien : si le maître de maison avait su à quelle heure de la nuit le voleur viendrait, il aurait veillé et n’aurait pas laissé percer le mur de sa maison. Tenez-vous donc prêts, vous aussi: c’est à l’heure où vous n’y penserez pas que le Fils de l’homme viendra. »

Seigneur, nous ne pourrons jamais t’offrir que les biens venus de toi: accepte ceux que nous t’apportons; Et puisque c’est toi qui nous donnes maintenant de célébrer l’eucharistie, fais qu’elle soit pour nous le gage du salut éternel. Par Jésus.

Le Seigneur donnera son bienfait et notre terre donnera son fruit.

Fais fructifier en nous, Seigneur, l’eucharistie qui nous a rassemblés : C’est par elle que tu formes dès maintenant, à travers la vie de ce monde, l’amour dont nous t’aimerons éternellement. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Nous commençons l’Avent, temps de préparation, à la fois, de la célébration de la venue de notre Seigneur Jésus et de son retour glorieux. La première lecture en donne le ton : le peuple attend le Seigneur qui viendra pour établir la justice, le droit et la paix. Jésus, parlant de son retour, nous demande de veiller pour ne pas être surpris. Saint Paul quant à lui nous invite à sortir de nos sommeils et de lutter contre les œuvres des ténèbres.

Il devint l’apôtre de la Sibérie méridionale et premier évêque d’Irkoutsk après avoir été éconduit de la Chine après que le Christianisme y eût été interdit par l’empereur, suite à quelques conflits théologiques entre Jésuites et Dominicains.

Le Seigneur annonce la paix pour son peuple et ses fidèles, et pour ceux qui reviennent vers lui.

Réveille, Seigneur, le courage de tes fidèles : Qu’ils soient plus ardents à profiter de tes grâces, pour obtenir de toi de plus puissants secours. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Ap 22, 1-7
Moi, Jean, l’ange me montra l’eau de la vie : un fleuve resplendissant comme du cristal, qui jaillit du trône de Dieu et de l’Agneau. Au milieu de la place de la ville, entre les deux bras du fleuve, il y a un arbre de vie qui donne des fruits douze fois : chaque mois il produit son fruit ; et les feuilles de cet arbre sont un remède pour les nations. Toute malédiction aura disparu. Le trône de Dieu et de l’Agneau sera dans la ville, et les serviteurs de Dieu lui rendront un culte ; ils verront sa face, et son nom sera sur leur front. La nuit aura disparu, ils n’auront plus besoin de la lumière d’une lampe ni de la lumière du soleil, parce que le Seigneur Dieu les illuminera ; ils régneront pour les siècles des siècles. Puis l’ange me dit : « Ces paroles sont dignes de foi et vraies : le Seigneur, le Dieu qui inspire les prophètes, a envoyé son ange pour montrer à ses serviteurs ce qui doit bientôt advenir. Méditation
« Oui, le grand Dieu, c’est le Seigneur, le grand roi au-dessus de tous les dieux » nous martèle le psaume de ce jour en son deuxième verset. Et à Jésus de nous prévenir sur l’impact de ce qui nous écrase et nous éloigne de Dieu : beuveries, ivresse et soucis de la vie. Dans un monde en perte de valeurs, de repères et de critères, nous sommes appelés à nous attacher à Celui qui est au-dessus de tous les dieux pour demeurer sur le bon et droit chemin.

St. Leonard
of Porto Maurizio
(1676 – 1751)
Leonard was born in Porto Maurizio in 1676. He joined the Franciscan order and for forty-seven years preached, wrote letters and sermons, and travelled the whole length of Italy. The popularity of the Stations of the Cross is much due to the impetus he gave to the devotion. He died in Rome in 1751.

Meditation
On this last day of the church’s year, the Lord recaps for his disciples the central message of the past two weeks: ‘Stay awake and be always ready, for you do not know when that day will come.’ John, the visioner, also concludes his visions with a recap. Just as an angel attested to the veracity of John’s visions when he began, an angel now attests to their authenticity when they are concluded. The basic message is that these are trying times and only the vigilant and the steadfast will join the Lamb in his victory lap. May God grant that we be among these!

St. Catherine
of Alexandria
(d. 305)
St. Catherine was very outspoken at the time of the persecutions of Christians. She even protested openly to the emperor Maxentius who had her arrested, tortured on the wheel and decapitated in 305. St Catherine’s courage is a great challenge to all African Christians in their struggle for justice and peace.

At the end of that time he must be released, but only for a short while. Then I saw some thrones, and I saw those who are given the power to be judges take their seats on them. I saw the souls of all who had been beheaded for having witnessed for Jesus and for having preached God’s word, and those who refused to worship the beast or his statue and would not have the brand-mark on their foreheads or hands; they came to life, and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. Then I saw a great white throne and the One who was sitting on it. In his presence, earth and sky vanished, leaving no trace. I saw the dead, both great and small, standing in front of his throne, while the book of life was opened, and other books opened which were the record of what they had done in their lives, by which the dead were judged. The sea gave up all the dead who were in it; Death and Hades were emptied of the dead that were in them; and every one was judged according to the way in which he had lived. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the burning lake. This burning lake is the second death; and anybody whose name could not be found written in the book of life was thrown into the burning lake. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; the first heaven and the first earth had disappeared now, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the holy city, and the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, as beautiful as a bride all dressed for her husband.

Meditation
The Kingdom of God is not a reality that is entirely futuristic; earlier on in this same gospel of Luke (17:21), Jesus says that “the kingdom of God is among you.” This kingdom is already beginning to flower in the hearts of those who accept and live the gospel of Jesus. With the incarnation, the life of God has been opened up to man; when we listen to Jesus we listen to God, and when we walk with him we are already walking the path of the Kingdom of God. The incarnation was not a reduction of God, but rather an enhancement of man. Thus in Jesus, God brings his kingdom closer to us, and while still on earth true Christians have a foretaste of the joy of the world to come.

d’Alexandrie
Celle qui était la plus jolie et la plus savante des jeunes filles de tout l’Empire était mystiquement fiancée à la Sagesse éternelle. Son inspiration lui fit écarter avec succès les objections des philosophes chargés de la convaincre de la stupidité du Christianisme.

Le Seigneur annonce la paix pour son peuple et ses fidèles, et pour ceux qui reviennent vers lui.

1ère lecture : Rm 10, 9-18
Frère, si de ta bouche, tu affirmes que Jésus est Seigneur, si, dans ton cœur, tu crois que Dieu l’a ressuscité d’entre les morts, alors tu seras sauvé. Car c’est avec le cœur que l’on croit pour devenir juste, c’est avec la bouche que l’on affirme sa foi pour parvenir au salut. En effet, l’Écriture dit : Quiconque met en lui sa foi ne connaîtra pas la honte. Ainsi, entre les Juifs et les païens, il n’y a pas de différence : tous ont le même Seigneur, généreux envers tous ceux qui l’invoquent. En effet, quiconque invoquera le nom du Seigneur sera sauvé. Or, comment l’invoquer, si on n ‘a pas mis sa foi en lui ? Comment mettre sa foi en lui, si on ne l’a pas entendu ? Comment entendre si personne ne proclame?Comment proclamer sans être envoyé ? Il est écrit : Comme ils sont beaux, les pas des messagers qui annoncent les bonnes nouvelles ! Et pourtant, tous n’ont pas obéi à la Bonne Nouvelle. Isaïe demande en effet: Qui a cru, Seigneur, en nous entendant parler ? Or la foi naît de ce que l’on entend ; et ce que l’on entend, c’est la parole du Christ. Alors, je pose la question : n’aurait-on pas entendu ? Mais si, bien sûr! Un psaume le dit : Sur toute la terre se répand leur message et leurs paroles, jusqu’aux limites du monde.
Psaume : 18 (19), 2-3, 4-5ab
R/ Par toute la terre s’en va leur message.
- Les cieux proclament la gloire de Dieu, le firmament raconte l’ouvrage de ses mains. Le jour au jour en livre le récit et la nuit à la nuit en donne connaissance.
- Pas de paroles dans ce récit, pas de voix qui s’entende ; mais sur toute la terre en paraît le message et la nouvelle, aux limites du monde.

Après la victoire de Dieu sur les persécuteurs des croyants et la célébration de cette victoire, vient le jugement. Il commence dans la première lecture par l’anéantissement du mal. Quant aux morts, ils furent jugés d’après ce qu’ils avaient fait. En d’autres termes, notre vie avec ses engagements, ses torpeurs, ses fidélités et infidélités, prépare notre jugement. Que la Parole nous illumine chaque jour pour échapper à la condamnation divine.

his Companions, Martyrs
Andrew Dung Lac was born in Vietnam in 1785. He became a Catholic priest. He was beheaded on December 21, 1839 in Hanoi, Vietnam, for the offense of being a priest. Many martyrs died at the hands of religious persecutors following Andrew’s death. We remember them all today.

May we never boast, except in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the word of the Cross is the power of God to us who have been saved.

O God, source and origin of all fatherhood, who kept the Martyrs Saint Andrew Dũng-Lac and his companions faithful to the Cross of your Son, even to the shedding of their blood, grant, through their intercession, that, spreading your love among our brothers and sisters, we may be your children both in name and in truth. For this is the time of vengeance when all that Scripture says must be fulfilled. Alas for those with child, or with babies at the breast, when those days come! Meditation
In the midst of all the gloom and doom, while Babylon (Rome) lies prostrate, while the citizens of Rome are denied the simple pleasures of everyday life, the citizens of heaven are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb. What may qualify us to receive this all-important invitation to the Lamb’s wedding feast? We have to avoid living the kind of life that brought Rome and Jerusalem to their knees: a life of arrogance and licentiousness. The two readings draw our attention to the danger of hinging our satisfaction on temporal accomplishments. The incomprehensible fall of both Babylon and Jerusalem have modern echoes in the economic and social crisis of the most developed nations of our time, an indication to the fact that man can never be his own salvation.

Seigneur Dieu, source et origine de toute paternité, tu as donné aux saint martyrs André et ses compagnons la grâce d’être fidèles à la croix de ton Fils jusqu’à l’effusion de leur sang ; accorde-nous, par leur intercession, de propager ton amour parmi nos frères, afin de pouvoir être appelés fils de Dieu et de l’être vraiment. Moi, Jean, j’ai vu descendre du ciel un autre ange, ayant un grand pouvoir, et la terre fut illuminée de sa gloire. Il a jugé la grande prostituée qui corrompait la terre par sa prostitution ; il a réclamé justice du sang de ses serviteurs, qu’elle a versé de sa main. » Et la foule reprit : « Alléluia ! La fumée de l’incendie s’élève pour les siècles des siècles. » Puis l’ange me dit : « Écris : Heureux les invités au repas des noces de l’Agneau!»

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Quand vous verrez Jérusalem encerclée par des armées, alors sachez que sa dévastation approche. Alors, ceux qui seront en Judée, qu’ils s’enfuient dans les montagnes ; ceux qui seront à l’intérieur de la ville, qu’ils s’en éloignent ; ceux qui seront à la campagne, qu’ils ne rentrent pas en ville, car ce seront des jours où justice sera faite pour que soit accomplie toute l’Écriture. Quel malheur pour les femmes qui seront enceintes et celles qui allaiteront en ces jours-là, car il y aura un grand désarroi dans le pays, une grande colère contre ce peuple. Ils tomberont sous le tranchant de l’épée, ils seront emmenés en captivité dans toutes les nations ; Jérusalem sera foulée aux pieds par des païens, jusqu’à ce que leur temps soit accompli. Il y aura des signes dans le soleil, la lune et les étoiles.Sur terre, les nations seront affolées et désemparées par le fracas de la mer et des flots. Les hommes mourront de peur dans l’attente de ce qui doit arriver au monde, car les puissances des cieux seront ébranlées. Méditation
La période des persécutions terminée, les lectures du livre de l’Apocalypse prennent un ton de louange et de glorification de Dieu. Le règne du dominateur mauvais n’a duré qu’un temps, la bête qui écrasait les chrétiens est détruite : Dieu demeure le plus fort. C’est le temps où le Fils de Dieu apparait avec puissance et gloire pour la célébration du véritable culte autour du Corps du Christ dans l’Eglise, nouveau temple de Dieu. Nos martyrs vivent cette joie immense.

Pope St. Clement I
Clement was the fourth Bishop of Rome after Peter, Linus and Cletus. Clement’s letter to the Corinthian church has survived. It is the first known Patristic document, and exhorts them to peace and brotherly harmony.

Meditation
The early centuries of the Church were an age of persecution. While the early Christians suffered persecution, they witnessed to Christ and brought about conversions by their amazing bravery and martyrdom. Others who were fleeing the sword took the good news to new territories. In accordance with the words of Jesus, the trials of the Christians became opportunities of evangelization while the blood of the martyrs became the seeds of Christianity. Many of today’s Christians are cold-feeted, too afraid to assert their faith. Christianity is neither an offensive nor secret religion and we should proudly seize every opportunity we have to profess it.

Vers 95, Clément, troisième successeur de Pierre à Rome, écrit à l’Église de Corinthe, avec l’autorité déjà reconnue au Siège apostolique, pour rétablir l’unité et rappeler les exigences de la charité chrétienne. D’après des textes du 4e siècle, Clément, exilé en Chersonèse (mer Noire), aurait été jeté à la mer.

Le Seigneur annonce la paix pour son peuple et ses fidèles, et pour ceux qui reviennent vers lui.

1ère lecture : Ap 15, 1-4
Moi, Jean, j’ai vu dans le ciel un autre signe, grand et merveilleux : sept anges qui détiennent sept fléaux ; ce sont les derniers, puisque s’achève avec eux la fureur de Dieu. J’ai vu comme une mer de cristal, mêlée de feu, et ceux qui sont victorieux de la Bête, de son image, et du chiffre qui correspond à son nom : ils se tiennent debout sur cette mer de cristal, ils ont en main les cithares de Dieu. Ils chantent le cantique de Moïse, serviteur de Dieu, et le cantique de l’Agneau. Ils disent : « Grandes, merveilleuses, tes œuvres, Seigneur Dieu, Souverain de l’univers ! Ils sont justes, ils sont vrais, tes chemins, Roi des nations. Qui ne te craindrait, Seigneur ? À ton nom, qui ne rendrait gloire ? Oui, toi seul es saint ! Cela vous amènera à rendre témoignage. Mettez-vous donc dans l’esprit que vous n’avez pas à vous préoccuper de votre défense. C’est moi qui vous donnerai un langage et une sagesse à laquelle tous vos adversaires ne pourront ni résister ni s’opposer. Vous serez livrés même par vos parents, vos frères, votre famille et vos amis, et ils feront mettre à mort certains d’entre vous. Vous serez détestés de tous, à cause de mon nom. Mais pas un cheveu de votre tête ne sera perdu. C’est par votre persévérance que vous garderez votre vie. »

Méditation
La première lecture de ce jour fait allusion à la pâque des Hébreux, la libération de l’esclavage en Égypte et la libération des mains des persécuteurs de l’Empire Romain. Les sauvés, ceux qui ont échappé à la persécution rendent grâce à Dieu. Jésus, dans l’Évangile, parle de cette persécution des chrétiens comme une occasion de rendre témoignage. Cependant il en appelle à la patience, la persévérance et à la joie malgré tout.
