Il est l’un des quarante soldats chrétiens de la XIIe Légion Fulminta (la Fulminante) en garnison à Mélitène (Malatya – Turquie), condamnés à périr de froid, attachés nus sur un étang gelé, le 9 mars 320, à Sébaste (Sivas-turquie).

Prière d’ouverture

1ère lecture : Esther 4, 17
En ces jours-là, la reine Esther, dans l’angoisse mortelle qui l’étreignait, chercha refuge auprès du Seigneur. Se prosternant à terre avec ses servantes du matin jusqu’au soir, elle disait : « Dieu d’Abraham, Dieu d’Isaac, Dieu de Jacob, tu es béni. Viens à mon secours car je suis seule, et je n’ai pas d’autre défenseur que toi, Seigneur. Car je vais jouer avec le danger. Dans les livres de mes ancêtres, Seigneur, j’ai appris que ceux qui te plaisent, tu les libères pour toujours, Seigneur. Et maintenant, aide-moi, car je suis solitaire et je n’ai que toi, Seigneur mon Dieu. Maintenant, viens me secourir car je suis orpheline, et mets sur mes lèvres un langage harmonieux quand je serai en présence de ce lion ; fais que je trouve grâce devant lui, et change son cœur : qu’il se mette à détester celui qui nous combat, qu’il le détruise avec tous ses partisans. Et nous, libère-nous de la main de nos ennemis ; rends-nous la joie après la détresse et le bien-être après la souffrance. » –

Ou encore : lequel d’entre vous donnera une pierre à son fils quand il lui demande du pain ? ou bien lui donnera un serpent, quand il lui demande un poisson ? Si donc vous, qui êtes mauvais, vous savez donner de bonnes choses à vos enfants, combien plus votre Père qui est aux cieux donnera-t-il de bonnes choses à ceux qui les lui demandent ! Nous t’en prions, Seigneur notre Dieu, toi qui nous donnes ces mystères sacrés pour affermir notre relèvement : fais qu’ils nous apportent la guérison maintenant et pour l’éternité. Par Jésus.
Méditation
L’évangile de ce jour nous montre comment doit être la prière du disciple de Jésus-Christ. Trois attitudes spirituelles doivent toujours conduire la démarche intérieure de l’orant : demandez, cherchez et frappez, tous des verbes d’action. Ces attitudes ne seront possibles qu’avec le concours de trois vertus capitales. “Demandez” suppose de reconnaitre notre indigence. Pour demander il faut faire preuve d’humilité, d’abaissement, bref de la mort de son ego pour se libérer de la dictature du sentiment de suffisance. La deuxième vertu qui va de pair avec le fait de “chercher” est la persévérance malgré les obstacles dressés sur le chemin de la quête. Quant à la troisième vertu qui accompagne le fait de “ frappez” est la confiance. Elle doit toujours habiter le disciple du Christ afin de savoir sans cesse oser et de ne jamais s’abandonner au découragement.

St. Oswald

In 972 he became Archbishop of York. He had a special love of the poor; in Lent he would wash the feet of twelve poor men every day. He died at Worcester on 28 February 992.

Meditation
The feast of St. Oswald, the saint of the poor, coincides with the gospel story of the command of Jesus to the rich young man. While the latter would respond to service of the poor by turning away, St. Oswald was noted for his great concern for the poor, and his constant availability to wash feet of the poor in the style of Christ. The challenge of our Christian calling is to detachourselves from material wealth and any other thing that comes between us and God, and to be ready to serve the poor and needy around us. May St. Oswald teach us to transform our material possessions into instruments for the service of the poor.

St. Romain
Doux et indulgent, Romain avait trente cinq ans lorsqu’il quitta son Bugey natal, n’emportant avec lui que « la vie des Pères du Désert ». Il prit son chemin vers l’Est, traversa de grandes forêts et finit par atteindre la Bienne. Il venait de trouver ce qui lui convenait : de la terre labourable, une fontaine, des arbres et du silence. Il vécut là quelques années comme s’il était dans le désert égyptien de la Thébaïde.

1ère lecture : 1 P 1,3-9
Béni soit Dieu, le Père de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ : dans sa grande miséricorde, il nous a fait renaître pour une vivante espérance grâce à la résurrection de Jésus Christ d’entre les morts, pour un héritage qui ne connaîtra ni corruption, ni souillure, ni flétrissure. Cet héritage vous est réservé dans les cieux, à vous que la puissance de Dieu garde par la foi, pour un salut prêt à se révéler dans les derniers temps. Aussi vous exultez de joie, même s’il faut que vous soyez affligés, pour un peu de temps encore, par toutes sortes d’épreuves ; elles vérifieront la valeur de votre foi qui a bien plus de prix que l’or – cet or voué à disparaître et pourtant vérifié par le feu -, afin que votre foi reçoive louange, gloire et honneur quand se révélera Jésus Christ. Lui, vous l’aimez sans l’avoir vu ; en lui, sans le voir encore, vous mettez votre foi, vous exultez d’une joie inexprimable et remplie de gloire, car vous allez obtenir le salut des âmes qui est l’aboutissement de votre foi.

R/ Le Seigneur garde toujours mémoire de son alliance
1. De tout coeur je rendrai grâce au Seigneur dans l’assemblée, parmi les justes. Grandes sont les oeuvres du Seigneur ; tous ceux qui les aiment s’en instruisent.
2. Il a donné des vivres à ses fidèles, gardant toujours mémoire de son alliance. Il a montré sa force à son peuple, lui donnant le domaine des nations.
3. Il apporte la délivrance à son peuple ;son alliance est promulguée pour toujours : saint et redoutable est son nom. La sagesse commence avec la crainte du Seigneur.Qui accomplit sa volonté en est éclairé. A jamais se maintiendra sa louange.

Évangile : Marc 10, 17-27
Jésus se mettait en route quand un homme accourut et, tombant à ses genoux, lui demanda : « Bon Maître, que dois-je faire pour avoir la vie éternelle en héritage ? » Jésus lui dit: « Pourquoi dire que je suis bon ? Personne n’est bon, sinon Dieu seul. Tu connais les commandements: Ne commets pas de meurtre, ne commets pas d’adultère, ne commets pas de vol, ne porte pas de faux témoignage, ne fais de tort à personne, honore ton père et ta mère. » L’homme répondit : « Maître, tout cela, je l’ai observé depuis ma jeunesse. » Jésus posa son regard sur lui, et il l’aima. Il lui dit : « Une seule chose te manque : va, vends ce que tu as et donne-le aux pauvres ; alors tu auras un trésor au ciel. Puis viens, suis-moi. » Mais lui, à ces mots, devint sombre et s’en alla tout triste, car il avait de grands biens. Alors Jésus regarda autour de lui et dit à ses disciples : « Comme il sera difficile à ceux qui possèdent des richesses d’entrer dans le royaume de Dieu!» Les disciples étaient stupéfaits de ces paroles. Jésus reprenant la parole leur dit : « Mes enfants, comme il est difficile d’entrer dans le royaume de Dieu ! Il est plus facile à un chameau de passer par le trou d’une aiguille qu’à un riche d’entrer dans le royaume de Dieu. » De plus en plus déconcertés, les disciples se demandaient entre eux : « Mais alors, qui peut être sauvé ? » Jésus les regarde et dit : « Pour les hommes, c’est impossible, mais pas pour Dieu ; car tout est possible à Dieu. »

Méditation
L’appel à la persévérance dans la foi face aux épreuves de la vie présente nous est adressé par saint Jacques. Nous sommes conviés à cultiver la foi en la vie béatifique, en la résurrection des morts et en l’héritage de la vie éternelle qui nous est promise. Pour ce faire, nous avons besoin de la grâce divine (Grâce incréée), de notre volonté ou de notre liberté souveraine (Grâce créée) selon l’expression de saint Thomas d’Aquin. L’évangile nous indique justement la voie à suivre pour hériter de la vie éternelle : l’observance des commandements et le renoncement total aux possessions ou aux richesses de ce monde. Imitant Jésus, recherchons les réalités d’en haut et nous serons sauvés. Amen !

How can you say to your brother, “Brother, let me take out the splinter that is in your eye,” when you cannot see the plank in your own? Hypocrite! Take the plank out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take out the splinter that is in your brother’s eye. ‘There is no sound tree that produces rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree that produces sound fruit. Meditation
Goodness cannot hide itself. The Creator from the beginning created all things good, wise and beautiful. He made all creatures great and wonderful, so that thw whole universe may be good. The readings of today’s liturgy invite us to uphold the goodness of God (for a good man draws what is good from the store in his heart) by working persistently for the glory of God, in order to flourish and gain the blessings of God. Let us strive to continue God’s goodness through the good work of our hands. This is thanksgiving of amazing grace!

1ère lecture : Si 27, 4-7
Quand on secoue le tamis, il reste les déchets ; de même, les petits côtés d’un homme apparaissent dans ses propos. Le four éprouve les vases du potier ; on juge l’homme en le faisant parler. C’est le fruit qui manifeste la qualité de l’arbre; ainsi la parole fait connaître les sentiments. Ne fais pas l’éloge de quelqu’un avant qu’il ait parlé, c’est alors qu’on pourra le juger.
Psaume : Ps 91 (92), 2-3, 13-14, 15-16
R/ Il est bon, Seigneur, de te rendre grâce ! (cf. Ps 91, 2)
1. Qu’il est bon de rendre grâce au Seigneur, de chanter pour ton nom, Dieu Très-Haut, d’annoncer dès le matin ton amour, ta fidélité, au long des nuits !
2. Le juste grandira comme un palmier, il poussera comme un cèdre du Liban ; planté dans les parvis du Seigneur, il grandira dans la maison de notre Dieu.
3. Vieillissant, il fructifie encore, il garde sa sève et sa verdeur pour annoncer : « Le Seigneur est droit ! Pas de ruse en Dieu, mon rocher ! »
2ère lecture : 1 Co 15, 54-58
Frères, au dernier jour, quand cet être périssable aura revêtu ce qui est impérissable, quand cet être mortel aura revêtu l’immortalité, alors se réalisera la parole de l’Écriture : La mort a été engloutie dans la victoire. Ô Mort, où est ta victoire ? Ô Mort, où est-il, ton aiguillon ? L’aiguillon de la mort, c’est le péché ; ce qui donne force au péché, c’est la Loi. Rendons grâce à Dieu qui nous donne la victoire par notre Seigneur Jésus Christ. Ainsi, mes frères bien-aimés, soyez fermes, soyez inébranlables, prenez une part toujours plus active à l’œuvre du Seigneur, car vous savez que, dans le Seigneur, la peine que vous vous donnez n’est pas perdue.

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples en parabole : « Un aveugle peut-il guider un autre aveugle ? Ne vont-ils pas tomber tous les deux dans un trou ? Le disciple n’est pas au-dessus du maître ; mais une fois bien formé, chacun sera comme son maître. Qu’as-tu à regarder la paille dans l’œil de ton frère, alors que la poutre qui est dans ton œil à toi, tu ne la remarques pas ? Comment peux-tu dire à ton frère : ‘Frère, laisse-moi enlever la paille qui est dans ton œil’, alors que toi-même ne vois pas la poutre qui est dans le tien ? Hypocrite ! Enlève d’abord la poutre de ton œil ; alors tu verras clair pour enlever la paille qui est dans l’œil de ton frère. Un bon arbre ne donne pas de fruit pourri ; jamais non plus un arbre qui pourrit ne donne de bon fruit. Chaque arbre, en effet, se reconnaît à son fruit : on ne cueille pas des figues sur des épines ; on ne vendange pas non plus du raisin sur des ronces. L’homme bon tire le bien du trésor de son cœur qui est bon ; et l’homme mauvais tire le mal de son cœur qui est mauvais : car ce que dit la bouche, c’est ce qui déborde du cœur. »

Méditation
L’homme, nous enseigne la philosophie sociale, est un être social, un être qui vit avec les autres. Depuis sa création, il est appelé à vivre et à s’épanouir avec le prochain (Gn 1, 23). C’est sur cette longueur d’ondes que nous pouvons comprendre l’interpellation de l’évangile de ce jour qui nous appelle à entretenir des relations interpersonnelles fondées sur le bien. Nous devons toujours nous examiner, nous regarder avant de faire des reproches à notre prochain. Aussi, dans cette relation ‘Je-Tu’, nous devons porter de bons fruits au bénéfice de tous : la foi, la charité fraternelle, l’engagement à l’œuvre du Seigneur. Que Jésus, notre Maître, nous aide à promouvoir la fraternité et la vie harmonieuse avec le prochain. Amen !

Alexander played an important role in the growth of the catechetical school at Alexandria. He fought against the heretical teachings of Arius. He died in 328.

Meditation
Basic Christian teaching impacts fundamental truths of doctrines that are a sine qua non for the growth people of God. That’s why the catechetical school of Alexandria that was renowned for its faithful building is epitomized in the life of St. Alexander. The deposit of faith is grasped by developing the childlike nature that enables the unravelling of the mysteries of God’s kingdom. Therefore, adherence to Church doctrine, as contained for example in James’ call for apt attention towards the sick through the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is an obligation that needs a childlike faith.

St. Nestor
Il était évêque de Magydos, dans le Sud de l’actuelle Turquie, quand éclata la persécution de Dèce. Nombreux furent alors les chrétiens qui apostasièrent pour sauver leur vie. Craignant que ses fidèles n’en fassent autant, il leur conseilla des fuir et lui-même se laissa arrêter. Conduit devant le gouverneur, il fut condamné à mourir, comme son maître, par crucifixion.

1ère lecture : Jc 5,13-20
L’un de vous se porte mal ? Qu’il prie. Un autre va bien ? Qu’il chante le Seigneur. L’un de vous est malade ? Qu’il appelle les Anciens en fonction dans l’Église : ils prieront sur lui après lui avoir fait une onction d’huile au nom du Seigneur. Cette prière inspirée par la foi sauvera le malade : le Seigneur le relèvera et, s’il a commis des péchés, il recevra le pardon. Confessez donc vos péchés les uns aux autres, et priez les uns pour les autres afin d’être guéris. La supplication du juste agit avec beaucoup de force. Le prophète Élie n’était qu’un homme pareil à nous ; pourtant, lorsqu’il a prié avec insistance pour qu’il ne pleuve pas, il n’est pas tombé de pluie sur la terre pendant trois ans et demi ; puis il a prié de nouveau, et le ciel a donné la pluie, et la terre a fait germer son fruit. Méditation
Cet extrait de l’épître de saint Jacques nous parle du sacrement de l’onction des malades. Un sacrement de guérison, un sacrement mal compris par de nombreux fidèles et pourtant porteur de grâces divines aux malades : il les fortifie et les guérit ; par sa réception, ils obtiennent le pardon de péchés. En outre, saint Jacques souligne la puissance de la prière et nous invite à œuvrer pour la conversion des autres afin de contribuer à leur salut et à obtenir nous-mêmes le pardon de nos péchés. Dans l’évangile, Jésus nous donne une condition pour accéder dans le Royaume de Dieu : devenir comme de petits enfants, c’est-à-dire mettre notre confiance en Dieu et compter en tout sur lui.

Meditation
The institution of marriage is attacked daily in our present age more than ever before. Divorce is something that is now celebrated. We are reminded today by Christ of the original plan of God, so that we may know that no matter how much we make wrong right, we can’t bend God’s will to such error. God willed that there should be a bond that makes a couple one. Marriage is a sacred union, one that demands love and respect from both parties.

St. John Theristus
He was a Benedictine monk of Calabrian lineage, born in Sicily. At a young age he became a monk. He helped to miraculously harvest a large crop ahead of destructive weather, saving the locals from starvation. There he remained until his death of natural causes, in 1129.

Meditation
Salus animarum supremae lex – the salvation of souls is the supreme law of the church. This is the message that cuts across today’s liturgical celebration. St. James insists on doing the right thing at the right time to save lives. In the same vein, the gospel underlines the significance of salvation by striving us to strive towards things that last, and cutting off the transient burdens of life. So, let’s be the saving face of humanityand salt of the earth.

2. Dans la mort, s’effaceront leurs visages : pour eux, plus de palais ! Mais Dieu rachètera ma vie aux griffes de la mort : c’est lui qui me prendra.
3. Ne crains pas l’homme qui s’enrichit, qui accroît le luxe de sa maison : aux enfers il n’emporte rien ; sa gloire ne descend pas avec lui.

Méditation
« Heureux les pauvres de cœur : le Royaume des cieux est à eux ». Ce répons du psaume 48 contient un enseignement profond sur lequel saint Jacques revient, à savoir : la relativisation des richesses de ce monde et leur précarité pour y fonder sa vie, son espérance en Dieu seul. C’est cela la Béatitude de la pauvreté de cœur à laquelle nous sommes invités. Chers frères et sœurs, être pauvre de cœur, c’est placer la sécurité de notre vie en Dieu, car les richesses de cette terre ne garantissent rien (Pape François, Gaudete et exsultate, n°68). Etre pauvre de cœur, c’est prendre Dieu pour notre seule richesse, c’est fonder notre espérance en Lui seul. Vivons alors cette Béatitude.
