O God, who wonderfully created the dignity of human nature and still more wonderfully restored it, grant, we pray, that we may share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First Reading : Isaiah 52:7-10
How beautiful on the mountains, are the feet of one who brings good news, who heralds peace, brings happiness, proclaims salvation, and tells Zion, ‘Your God is king!’ Listen! Your watchmen raise their voices, they shout for joy together, for they see the Lord face to face, as he returns to Zion. Break into shouts of joy together, you ruins of Jerusalem; for the Lord is consoling his people, redeeming Jerusalem. Second Reading : Hebrews 1:1-6
At various times in the past and in various different ways, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets; but in our own time the last days, he has spoken to us through his Son, the Son that he has appointed to inherit everything and through whom he made everything there is. He is the radiant light of God’s glory and the perfect copy of his nature, sustaining the universe by his powerful command; and now that he has destroyed the defilement of sin, he has gone to take his place in heaven at the right hand of divine Majesty. So he is now as far above the angels as the title which he has inherited is higher than their own name. God has never said to any angel: You are my Son, today I have become your father, or: I will be a father to him and he a son to me. Again, when he brings the First-born into the world, he says: Let all the angels of God worship him.

Gospel : John 1:1-18
In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things came to be, not one thing had its being but through him. All that came to be had life in him and that life was the light of men, a light that shines in the dark, a light that darkness could not overpower. A man came, sent by God. His name was John. He came as a witness, as a witness to speak for the light, so that everyone might believe through him. He was not the light, only a witness to speak for the light. The Word was the true light that enlightens all men; and he was coming into the world. He was in the world that had its being through him, and the world did not know him. He came to his own domain and his own people did not accept him. But to all who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to all who believe in the name of him who was born not out of human stock or urge of the flesh or will of man but of God himself. The Word was made flesh, he lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory that is his as the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. John appears as his witness. He proclaims: ‘This is the one of whom I said: He who comes after me ranks before me because he existed before me.’ Indeed, from his fullness we have, all of us, received- yes, grace in return for grace, since, though the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ. Meditation
“How beautiful on the mountains, are the feet of one who brings good news.” There is good news indeed for us today: God has visited us, our Lord walks in our midst, God is with us. Today is a day of joy for us because the Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us. We celebrate the Incarnation, the act by which our God became man and came into the world. We rejoice today because Christ became human like us so that we may share in his divinity. He lowered himself to share in our humanity to raise us to the dignity of sons and daughters of God. Jesus has come to transform us, so that we may be holy, as his Father in heaven is holy. May this celebration mark a turning point in our lives. Jesus is born in our hearts today. May he purify and transform us so that our thoughts, words and actions may be inspired no longer by our desires but by his Spirit.

A la mort de son époux, elle se fit religieuse et fonda l’abbaye de Pfalzel dans le diocèse de Trèves. Elle en fut l’Abbesse réputée et respectée. Elle fut aussi la grand-mère de saint Grégoire d’Utrecht qui fut l’un des plus dynamiques disciples de saint Boniface.

Le roi David était enfin installé dans sa maison, à Jérusalem. Le Seigneur lui avait accordé des jours tranquilles en le délivrant de tous les ennemis qui l’entouraient. Le roi dit alors au prophète Nathan : «Regarde ! En ce temps-là, à la naissance de Jean Baptiste, Zacharie, son père, fut rempli de l’Esprit Saint et prononça ces paroles prophétiques : «Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d’Israël, parce qu’il a visité son peuple pour accomplir sa libération. Dans la maison de David, son serviteur, il a fait se lever une force qui nous sauve. C’est ce qu’il avait annoncé autrefois par la bouche de ses saints prophètes: le salut qui nous délivre de nos adversaires, des mains de tous nos ennemis. David, considérant son aise dans sa maison, se soucie de la demeure de Yahvé son Dieu : « Moi j’habite une belle maison et Dieu, lui… n’a qu’un abri de fortune. » Cependant, que peut l’homme quand l’heure de Dieu a sonné ? Rien, sinon commencer par recevoir, s’ouvrir, se faire accueillant. « Ce n’est pas toi qui me bâtiras une maison ! C’est moi qui vais te faire une maison, qui ferais de toi et de tes fils après toi, ma Maison, la Maison d’Israël, ma lignée et mon peuple!» Noël célèbre la construction de cette maison du Seigneur et son couronnement en Jésus. Noël m’appelle à me laisser construire pour devenir moi aussi constructeur de la Maison de Dieu, constructeur de maisons pour les enfants de Dieu. « Tout ce que tu as l’intention de faire, fais-le, car le Seigner est avec toi. » Noël est à ma porte.

St. Adele was a widow. A daughter of King Dagobert II of Germany, St. Adele became a nun upon the death of her husband. After a devout life filled with good works and communion with God, she passed on to her heavenly reward in 730.

Meditation
On the eve of Christmas, God reminds us in his Word that the one whose birth we are about to celebrate is the one whose coming he had announced through his prophets. In the first reading, God told David that the kingship of Israel would remain in his household forever, and in the gospel, Zechariah said God had raised up from the house of David the one who would bring salvation to mankind. Jesus, the descendant of David, is the source of our salvation. He is coming to free us from every form of fear, to illuminate our lives by showing us the right path to follow, and to fill our hearts with peace. Let us open our hearts to receive him; let us submit ourselves to him and ask him for the strength to serve him in holiness and virtue all the days of our lives.

Dieu éternel et tout-puissant, nous allons bientôt célébrer la naissance de ton Fils ; il a voulu prendre chair de la Vierge Marie, il s’est lié pour toujours à notre humanité : fais qu’il montre ta miséricorde aux pauvres serviteurs que nous sommes. Lui qui règne.
Première lecture : Ml 3, 1-4.23-24
Ainsi parle le Seigneur Dieu : Voici que j’envoie mon messager pour qu’il prépare le chemin devant moi ; et soudain viendra dans son Temple le Seigneur que vous cherchez. Le messager de l’Alliance que vous désirez, le voici qui vient, – dit le Seigneur de l’univers. Qui pourra soutenir le jour de sa venue ? Qui pourra rester debout lorsqu’il se montrera ? Quand fut accompli le temps où Élisabeth devait enfanter, elle mit au monde un fils. Ses voisins et sa famille apprirent que le Seigneur lui avait montré la grandeur de sa miséricorde, et ils se réjouissaient avec elle. Le huitième jour, ils vinrent pour la circoncision de l’enfant. Ils voulaient l’appeler Zacharie, du nom de son père. Mais sa mère prit la parole et déclara : « Non, il s’appellera Jean. » On lui dit : « Personne dans ta famille ne porte ce nom-là ! » On demandait par signes au père comment il voulait l’appeler. Il se fit donner une tablette sur laquelle il écrivit : « Jean est son nom. » Et tout le monde en fut étonné. À l’instant même, sa bouche s’ouvrit, sa langue se délia : il parlait et il bénissait Dieu. La crainte saisit alors tous les gens du voisinage et, dans toute la région montagneuse de Judée, on racontait tous ces événements. Tous ceux qui les apprenaient les conservaient dans leur cœur et disaient : « Que sera donc cet enfant ? » En effet, la main du Seigneur était avec lui.

Méditation
Comment l’enfant s’appellera-t-il ? Zacharie, comme son père ? « Non, répond Elisabeth avec autorité : il s’appellera Jean ! » Et Zacharie que le doute avait ligoté la langue se trouve tout à coup délié pour confirmer dans une assurance retrouvée : « son nom est Jean. » On vit là tout un chamboulement, signe des temps nouveaux. Non seulement la femme stérile enfante, mais le petit enfant se dégage de la tradition par la surprise de son nom. Ce nom-là, il n’est pas des hommes, il est de Dieu. Il porte la marque du Très-Haut, le signe du dessein du Seigneur sur l’humanité : « Dieu fait grâce. » Elisabeth et Zacharie se réjouissent, non seulement « selon la chair » mais « selon l’Esprit » : le nom de cet enfant, c’est sa raison d’être. « Prophète du Très-Haut », il vient annoncer le lever du soleil sur l’humanité. Jean, tu n’auras qu’une seule parole à dire, qu’un seul nom à prononcer, mais il consumera ta vie entière : Jésus. Dieu sauve. Telle est ta vocation, telle est ta mission. Telle est aussi la nôtre.

St. John of Kęty (1390 – 1473)

He was born in Kęty in the diocese of Kraków in 1390. He became a priest and for many years taught at the University of Kraków; later he became parish priest of Olkusz. He taught and researched in both physics and theology and excelled in holiness and in charity towards his neighbour, in which he was an example to his colleagues and pupils. He died in 1473.

A child shall be born for us, and he will be called God, the Almighty; every tribe of the earth shall be blest in him.

Almighty ever-living God, as we see how the Nativity of your Son according to the flesh draws near, we pray that to us, your unworthy servants, mercy may flow from your Word, who chose to become flesh of the Virgin Mary and establish among us his dwelling, Jesus Christ our Lord. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Meditation
The coming of John the Baptist was announced by the prophet Malachi, who in the first reading speaks of the coming of Elijah. When John was born, it was clear to everyone that he was destined for a great mission. This mission is outlined in the first reading – to turn the hearts of fathers towards their children and the hearts of children towards their fathers. The message of John the Baptist is that we should turn back to God and learn once again to love him and to love our neighbour. As we prepare to celebrate Jesus’ birth, God’s Word reminds us that on Christmas Day we will not see Jesus physically; he will come to us in the person of our fathers, mothers, children, neighbours – all those people we encounter daily and to whom we usually pay little attention. May Jesus come and give us the grace to see him and love him in all these people.

Méditation
Marie est fille d’Abraham, le père de la Promesse. Dans ce chant du Magnificat, elle reconnaît en elle l’action bienveillante du Dieu Saint, qui a posé les yeux sur son humble servante. Son action de grâce reprend tous les grands thèmes de l’histoire du Salut présents dès le début de l’histoire sainte : elle est fille d’Israël, comme Rachel, Sara et Anne – la mère de Samuel -, qui ont enfanté avec l’aide du Seigneur. En elle s’accomplit le règne de Dieu, la Béatitude des pauvres et des humbles de cœur. Oui : la miséricorde de Dieu s’étend d’âge en âge sur ceux qui le craignent, renversant les puissants et les orgueilleux, faisant advenir la vie par le don de soi, l’humilité et la confiance. Accueillir ce chant du Magnificat nous fait déjà entrer dans la joie de la Nativité de notre Sauveur.

Meditation
“My heart exults in the Lord my Saviour.” Today, Hannah and Mary teach us a precious lesson on gratitude. God answered Hannah’s request for a son by giving her Samuel, and in thanksgiving she dedicated Samuel to him and sang the hymn of praise which is today’s response to the first reading. God honoured Mary above all women by making her the mother of his Son, and in thanksgiving she sang the Magnificat. Our life as Christians is generally characterised by lots of asking and too little thanksgiving. We ask all the time, and we rarely take time to acknowledge what God has done for us and do something to show our gratitude. Count your blessings and thank God for them every day. Do not only ask God for this or that; ask yourself also, “How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?” (Ps 115:12)

Saint Pierre Canisius, prêtre et docteur de l’Eglise

Pierre Kanijs, dont le nom fut latinisé en Canisius (1521-1597), naquit à Nimègue. Jésuite, prêtre en 1546, il créa de nombreux collèges et travailla, par sa prédication et ses écrits de controverse, à répandre la foi catholique et à rétablir l’unité dans l’Église. On l’a appelé ‘’le nouveau Boniface’’. Il composa des catéchismes, si adaptés à leur but qu’en Allemagne on désignait un catéchisme par le mot ‘’ Canisius’’.

Alors, Élisabeth fut remplie d’Esprit Saint, et s’écria d’une voix forte : « Tu es bénie entre toutes les femmes, et le fruit de tes entrailles est béni. Méditation
La mission chrétienne est parfois comparée à la Visitation : c’est très éclairant. Marie va trouver Elisabeth après avoir appris qu’elle était enceinte, elle aussi. Les deux femmes se rencontrent, portant en elles ce qu’elles ont de plus précieux, un enfant reçu de Dieu. L’enfant d’Elisabeth va prophétiser par la bouche de sa mère. En effet, en bougeant et en communiquant sa joie dans le sein de sa mère, il lui manifeste la présence du Sauveur dans le sein de Marie. Les paroles que prononce Elisabeth sont une révélation pour les deux mères. Il en va souvent de même pour nous : c’est quand nous allons à la rencontre les uns des autres, avec ce que nous sommes, que ce que nous portons de meilleur en nous nous est révélé par les autres.

He was born in Holland in 1521. He studied at Cologne and joined the Society of Jesus: he was ordained priest in 1546. He worked hard to defend and strengthen the Catholic faith both by writing and by preaching. He wrote many books, of which the Catechism is particularly noteworthy. He died at Fribourg in Switzerland on 21 November 1597.

Meditation
Mary was blessed among all women because she believed in the promises of God. She became a source of blessing because when she visited Elisabeth, she was filled with the Holy Spirit and her unborn child leapt for joy. When we believe in God, he blesses us and we become channels of his blessings for others. Like the lover in the first reading who yearns for her beloved, let us ask Jesus to come to us today. May he come and strengthen our faith, so that we may always receive his blessings. May he bless all our endeavours and give us the peace and joy that he alone can give. May he help us to live in such a way that those we encounter may experience God and receive God’s blessings through us.

Nous vivons cette ultime préparation de Noël avec la Vierge Marie, dans son accueil du Verbe de Dieu. Un jour, Dieu nous a donné son Fils en le confiant au sein de la Vierge Marie. Saint Augustin redit avec conviction la primauté de la foi de Marie dans la conception de Jésus : « L’ange annonce, la Vierge écoute, elle croit et elle conçoit. Le Christ est cru et conçu par la foi. D’abord, se produit la venue de la foi dans le cœur de la Vierge, ensuite vient la fécondité dans le sein de la Mère. » Ce même mystère de la foi qui conçoit se poursuit aujourd’hui encore ; nous n’avons pas fini d’accomplir ce travail du prélude de la naissance du sauveur en notre monde. Dieu continue de venir à nous par la foi et de nous communiquer sa vie. Que la Vierge Marie soit notre guide dans l’accueil de ce don de Dieu, qu’elle nous communique en ce jour sa disponibilité totale, sa simplicité et son humilité.
