Dedication of the Lateran Basilica (c.324)

The Lateran Basilica was built by the Emperor Constantine on the Lateran Hill in Rome in about 324. In honour of the basilica, “the mother and head of all the churches of the City and the World,” the feast has been extended to the whole Roman Rite as a sign of unity and love towards the See of Peter.

First Reading: Ezekiel 47:1-2.8-9.12
The angel brought me to the entrance of the Temple, where a stream came out from under the Temple threshold and flowed eastwards, since the Temple faced east. He took me out by the north gate and led me right round outside as far as the outer east gate where the water flowed out on the right-hand side. Just before the Jewish Passover Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and in the Temple he found people selling cattle and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting at their counters there. Making a whip out of some cord, he drove them all out of the Temple, cattle and sheep as well, scattered the money-changers’ coins, knocked their tables over and said to the pigeon-sellers, ‘Take all this out of here and stop turning my Father’s house into a market.’ Then his disciples remembered the words of Scripture: Zeal for your house will devour me. The Jews intervened and said, ‘What sign can you show us to justify what you have done?’ Jesus answered, ‘Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews replied, ‘It has taken forty-six years to build this sanctuary: are you going to raise it up in three days?’ But he was speaking of the sanctuary that was his body, and when Jesus rose from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the words he had said.

Meditation
To the people of Israel, the house of God was, and still is, a visible sign of his presence among his people. Hence there is a need to purify our hearts before going into the house of God. For Christians, Jesus is the true Temple of the New Covenant. He is the abode of God par excellence. Just as the Father came to us, through him, we also have access to the Father through him. In him and through him, we have redemption and the forgiveness of sins. Jesus Christ is the meeting place between the human being and God. May our reverence for the temple of God help us to care for the sanctuary of our hearts so that it may be a dwelling place worthy of our Lord.

Son monastère battait de l’aile avec seulement six moines quand ceux-ci le choisirent comme abbé. En quelque temps, le monastère de Nogent ans la Marne devint l’un des plus florissants. Après l’insistance de l’évêque de Reims, il accepte de devenir évêque d’Amiens. Ce qui lui en coûta en quelque sorte. Car la plupart des membres du clergé était à la solde des grands seigneurs.

Méditation Dans l´Évangile d´aujourd´hui, le Christ nous demande de faire attention afin de ne pas être objet de chute pour les autres : il nous exhorte de faire tout notre possible pour ne pas entrainer les autres dans le péché. Il nous demande, en plus, de pardonner sans cesse à quiconque nous a offensés, surtout s’il prend le courage de venir nous demander pardon. Enfin, il nous révèle l’importance de la foi en Dieu qui nous obtient et nous permet d’accomplir même des choses impossibles aux yeux des hommes. Comme les Apôtres, demandons à Jésus d’augmenter notre foi afin de savoir discerner la volonté de Dieu en toute chose. Efforçons-nous aussi à garder la foi en Dieu surtout dans les moments de dures épreuves.

Finally, he reveals to us the importance of faith in God, which enables us to accomplish even things impossible in the eyes of men. Like the apostles, let us ask Jesus to increase our faith so that we can discern God’s will in all things. Let us strive to keep our faith in God, especially in times of severe trial.

Première lecture : 1 R 17, 10-16
En ces jours-là, le prophète Élie partit pour Sarepta, et il parvint à l’entrée de la ville. Une veuve ramassait du bois ; il l’appela et lui dit : « Veux-tu me puiser, avec ta cruche, un peu d’eau pour que je boive ? » Elle alla en puiser. Il lui dit encore : « Apporte-moi aussi un morceau de pain. » Elle répondit : « Je le jure par la vie du Seigneur ton Dieu : je n’ai pas de pain. J’ai seulement, dans une jarre, une poignée de farine, et un peu d’huile dans un vase. Je ramasse deux morceaux de bois, je rentre préparer pour moi et pour mon fils ce qui nous reste. Nous le mangerons, et puis nous mourrons. » Élie lui dit alors : « N’aie pas peur, va, fais ce que tu as dit. Mais d’abord cuis-moi une petite galette et apporte-la moi ; ensuite tu en feras pour toi et ton fils. Car ainsi parle le Seigneur, Dieu d’Israël : Jarre de farine point ne s’épuisera, vase d’huile point ne se videra, jusqu’au jour où le Seigneur donnera la pluie pour arroser la terre. » La femme alla faire ce qu’Élie lui avait demandé, et pendant longtemps, le prophète, elle-même et son fils eurent à manger. Et la jarre de farine ne s’épuisa pas, et le vase d’huile ne se vida pas, ainsi que le Seigneur l’avait annoncé par l’intermédiaire d’Élie.

Deuxième lecture : He 9, 24-28
Le Christ n’est pas entré dans un sanctuaire fait de main d’homme, figure du sanctuaire véritable ; il est entré dans le ciel même, afin de se tenir maintenant pour nous devant la face de Dieu. Il n’a pas à s’offrir lui-même plusieurs fois, comme le grand prêtre qui, tous les ans, entrait dans le sanctuaire en offrant un sang qui n’était pas le sien ; car alors, le Christ aurait dû plusieurs fois souffrir la Passion depuis la fondation du monde. Mais en fait, c’est une fois pour toutes, à la fin des temps, qu’il s’est manifesté pour détruire le péché par son sacrifice. Et, comme le sort des hommes est de mourir une seule fois et puis d’être jugés, ainsi le Christ s’est-il offert une seule fois pour enlever les péchés de la multitude ; il apparaîtra une seconde fois, non plus à cause du péché, mais pour le salut de ceux qui l’attendent.

En ce temps-là, dans son enseignement, Jésus disait aux foules : « Méfiez-vous des scribes, qui tiennent à se promener en vêtements d’apparat et qui aiment les salutations sur les places publiques, les sièges d’honneur dans les synagogues, et les places d’honneur dans les dîners. Ils dévorent les biens des veuves et, pour l’apparence, ils font de longues prières : ils seront d’autant plus sévèrement jugés. » Jésus s’était assis dans le Temple en face de la salle du trésor, et regardait comment la foule y mettait de l’argent. Beaucoup de riches y mettaient de grosses sommes. Une pauvre veuve s’avança et mit deux petites pièces de monnaie. Jésus appela ses disciples et leur déclara : « Amen, je vous le dis : cette pauvre veuve a mis dans le Trésor plus que tous les autres. Car tous, ils ont pris sur leur superflu, mais elle, elle a pris sur son indigence : elle a mis tout ce qu’elle possédait, tout ce qu’elle avait pour vivre. »

Il y a plus de joie à donner qu’à recevoir. Car, comme le dit bien Saint François d’Assise, c’est en donnant que l’on reçoit. La veuve dont nous parle Jésus dans l’Evangile a bien compris cela. Elle offre tout à Dieu pour qu’elle puisse être complètement dépendante de Lui. Elle accepte d’offrir à Dieu toute sa richesse pour que Dieu soit sa seule richesse et sa seule sécurité. Elle met Dieu avant sa propre vie. Elle aime son Dieu avec un cœur vraiment pur et désintéressé : elle est capable de tout sacrifier par amour pour Dieu et pour le prochain. Elle a agi selon l’Esprit même du Christ, « lui qui était riche, s’est fait pauvre, pour nous enrichir par sa pauvreté » (2 Cor 8: 9). A l’instar de cette veuve, sachons reconnaître notre pauvreté et offrons-la au Seigneur pour qu’il prenne soin de nous.

First reading: 1 Kings 17:10-16
Elijah the Prophet went off to Sidon. And when he reached the city gate, there was a widow gathering sticks; addressing her he said, ‘Please bring me a little water in a vessel for me to drink.’ She was setting off to bring it when he called after her. ‘Please’ he said ‘bring me a scrap of bread in your hand.’ ‘As the Lord your God lives,’ she replied ‘I have no baked bread, but only a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a jug; I am just gathering a stick or two to go and prepare this for myself and my son to eat, and then we shall die.’ But Elijah said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, go and do as you have said; but first make a little scone of it for me and bring it to me, and then make some for yourself and for your son. For thus the Lord speaks, the God of Israel: “Jar of meal shall not be spent, jug of oil shall not be emptied, before the day when the Lord sends rain on the face of the earth.”’ The woman went and did as Elijah told her and they ate the food, she, himself and her son. The jar of meal was not spent nor the jug of oil emptied, just as the Lord had foretold through Elijah.
Psalm 145(146):7-10
R/ My soul, give praise to the Lord.
1. It is the Lord who keeps faith forever, who is just to those who are oppressed. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free.
2. It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who loves the just, the Lord, who protects the stranger.
3. The Lord upholds the widow and orphan but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign forever, Zion’s God, from age to age. My soul, give praise to the Lord.
Second reading: Hebrews 9:24-28
It is not as though Christ had entered a man-made sanctuary which was only modelled on the real one; but it was heaven itself, so that he could appear in the actual presence of God on our behalf. And he does not have to offer himself again and again, like the high priest going into the sanctuary year after year with the blood that is not his own, or else he would have had to suffer over and over again since the world began. Instead of that, he has made his appearance once and for all, now at the end of the last age, to do away with sin by sacrificing himself. Since men only die once, and after that comes judgement, so Christ, too, offers himself only once to take the faults of many on himself, and when he appears a second time, it will not be to deal with sin but to reward with salvation those who are waiting for him.

Gospel: Mark 12:38-44
In his teaching Jesus said, ‘Beware of the scribes who like to walk about in long robes, to be greeted obsequiously in the market squares, to take the front seats in the synagogues and the places of honour at banquets; these are the men who swallow the property of widows, while making a show of lengthy prayers. The more severe will be the sentence they receive.’ He sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the treasury, and many of the rich put in a great deal. A poor widow came and put in two small coins, the equivalent of a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, ‘I tell you solemnly, this poor widow has put more in than all who have contributed to the treasury; for they have all put in money they had over, but she from the little she had has put in everything she possessed, all she had to live on.’

Look with favour, we pray, O Lord, upon the sacrificial gifts offered here, that, celebrating in mystery the Passion of your Son, we may honour it with loving devotion. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
“There is more happiness in giving than in receiving.” (Acts 20:35). As Saint Francis of Assisi says, it is by giving that we receive. The widow Jesus speaks of in the Gospel understood this well. She offers everything to God so that she can be completely dependent on Him. She puts God before her own life. She loves her God with a truly pure and disinterested heart. She can sacrifice everything for the love of God and neighbour. She acted according to the very Spirit of Christ, “He who was rich made himself poor, to enrich us with his poverty” (2 Cor 8:9). Like this widow, let us recognise our poverty and offer it to the Lord so that he may take care of us.

Si vous n’avez pas été dignes de confiance pour l’argent malhonnête, qui vous confiera le bien véritable ? Et si, pour ce qui est à autrui, vous n’avez pas été dignes de confiance, ce qui vous revient, qui vous le donnera ? Aucun domestique ne peut servir deux maîtres : ou bien il haïra l’un et aimera l’autre, ou bien il s’attachera à l’un et méprisera l’autre. Vous ne pouvez pas servir à la fois Dieu et l’argent. » Quand ils entendaient tout cela, les pharisiens, eux qui aimaient l’argent, tournaient Jésus en dérision. Méditation
L’argent bien acquis et bien utilisé est un atout pour servir Dieu et le prochain. Il doit être un moyen et non une finalité. Ainsi devons-nous faire attention pour ne pas devenir esclave de l’argent, car cela nous conduirait à oublier l’essentiel: rendre grâce à Dieu de qui nous tenons l’être la vie et le mouvement. Jésus nous invite donc à amasser des trésors dans le ciel (Mt 6, 19), et à être des hommes de confiance dans la gestion des choses de ce monde. Si nous nous montrons dignes de confiance dans la gestion des biens terrestres alors on pourra nous confier la gestion des biens célestes. Que la grâce de Dieu nous soutienne pour qu’en faisant un bon usage des biens qui passent nous puissions mettre tout notre espoir en Dieu qui seul peut combler les désirs de nos cœurs.

Meditation
Money well acquired and well used is an asset to serve God and neighbour. It must be a means and not an end. So we must be careful not to become slaves to money because this would lead us to forget the essential-to give thanks to God from whom we receive life. Jesus, therefore, invites us to gather treasures in heaven (Mt 6:19), and to be men of trust in the management of the things of this world. If we are trustworthy in the management of earthly goods, then we can be entrusted with the management of heavenly goods. May the grace of God sustain us so that by making good use of temporal goods, we can put all our hope in God who alone can fulfill the desires of our hearts.

Moi-même, je suis convaincu, mes frères, que vous êtes pleins de bonnes qualités, remplis de toute connaissance de Dieu, et capables aussi de vous reprendre les uns les autres. Mais je vous ai écrit avec un peu d’audace, comme pour raviver votre mémoire sur certains points, et c’est en raison de la grâce que Dieu m’a donnée. Cette grâce, c’est d’être ministre du Christ Jésus pour les nations, avec la fonction sacrée d’annoncer l’Évangile : de Dieu, afin que l’offrande des nations soit acceptée par Dieu, sanctifiée dans l’Esprit Saint. Je mets donc ma fierté dans le Christ Jésus, pour ce qui est du service de Dieu. Car je n’oserais rien dire s’il ne s’agissait de ce que le Christ a mis en œuvre par moi afin d’amener les nations à l’obéissance de la foi, par la parole et l’action, la puissance des signes et des prodiges, la puissance de l’Esprit de Dieu. Ainsi, depuis Jérusalem en rayonnant jusqu’à la Dalmatie, j’ai mené à bien l’annonce de l’Évangile: du Christ. Je l’ai fait en mettant mon honneur à n’évangéliser que là où le nom du Christ n’avait pas encore été prononcé, car je ne voulais pas bâtir sur les fondations posées par un autre, mais j’ai agi selon qu’il est écrit: Ceux à qui on ne l’avait pas annoncé verront ;ceux qui n’en avaient pas entendu parler comprendront.

Rends-moi les comptes de ta gestion, car tu ne peux plus être mon gérant. Le gérant se dit en lui-même : “Que vais-je faire, puisque mon maître me retire la gestion? Travailler la terre ? Je n’en ai pas la force. Mendier ? J’aurais honte. Je sais ce que je vais faire, pour qu’une fois renvoyé de ma gérance, des gens m’accueillent chez eux.” Il fit alors venir, un par un, ceux qui avaient des dettes envers son maître. Il demanda au premier: “ Combien dois-tu à mon maître ? ” Il répondit: “ Cent barils d’huile. “ Le gérant lui dit: “Voici ton reçu ; vite, assieds-toi et écris cinquante. Puis il demanda à un autre : “Et toi, combien dois-tu? ” Il répondit : “Cent sacs de blé.”Le gérant lui dit: “Voici ton reçu, écris 80.”Le maître fit l’éloge de ce gérant malhonnête car il avait agi avec habileté ; en effet, les fils de ce monde sont plus habiles entre eux que les fils de la lumière. »

Nous sommes tous des intendants des mystères du Royaume de Dieu, car Dieu nous a confié beaucoup de dons dont Il voudrait que nous fassions bon usage. A chacun de revoir sa manière de gérer les qualités et les grâces qu’il ou elle a reçues de la part du bon Dieu, parce que, le temps viendra de rendre les comptes. Tout en gérant les biens de ce monde qui ne sont qu’éphémères, nous devons nous efforcer de garder les yeux fixés sur ce qui demeure, notamment le Royaume de cieux. Puissions-nous, par l’intercession de notre mère céleste, viser sans cesse l’essentiel dans notre vie, afin qu’ainsi nos cœurs s’établissent fermement là où se trouve la vrai joie.

My brothers, I am quite certain that you are full of good intentions, perfectly well instructed and able to advise each other. The reason why I have written to you, and put some things rather strongly, is to refresh your memories, since God has given me this special position. He has appointed me as a priest of Jesus Christ, and I am to carry out my priestly duty by bringing the Good News from God to the pagans, and so make them acceptable as an offering, made holy by the Holy Spirit. I think I have some reason to be proud of what I, in union with Christ Jesus, have been able to do for God. What I am presuming to speak of, of course, is only what Christ himself has done to win the allegiance of the pagans, using what I have said and done by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Thus all the way along, from Jerusalem to Illyricum, I have preached Christ’s Good News to the utmost of my capacity. I have always, however, made it an unbroken rule never to preach where Christ’s name has already been heard. The reason for that was that I had no wish to build on other men’s foundations; on the contrary, my chief concern has been to fulfil the text: Those who have never been told about him will see him, and those who have never heard about him will understand.

Meditation
We are all stewards of the mysteries of the Kingdom of God, for God has entrusted us with many gifts which he would have us use. It is up to each person to review his or her way of managing the qualities and graces he or she has received from God because the time will come to give an account. As we manage the possessions of this world that are but ephemeral, we must strive to keep our eyes fixed on what remains, especially the Kingdom of heaven. May we, through the intercession of our heavenly Mother, aim ceaselessly at the most important things in our lives, so that our hearts may be firmly established where true joy is found.
