Sainte Thérèse d’Avila, vierge et docteur de l’Eglise

La première femme à recevoir le titre de docteur de l’Eglise (1970) est une mystique castillane dont les écrits tracent un chemin sûr à ceux qui veulent progresser dans la prière et la perfection chrétienne. En livrant les secrets de son expérience faite d’un amour ardent, allié à un profond équilibre, Thérèse (1515-1582) révélait aussi où elle trouva la force de réformer le Carmel. Elle était à dix-huit ans au Carmel d’Avila, sa ville natale,. Au bout de vingt-sept ans, la grâce fait d’elle une âme qui veut ‘’ou souffrir ou mourir’’ pour Jésus. Sous son impulsion, les fondations de Carmels réformés se multiplient.

Dieu qui as suscité par ton Esprit, sainte Thérèse d’Avila pour montrer à l’Église le chemin de la perfection, fais-nous trouver notre nourriture dans sa doctrine spirituelle et brûler du désir de la véritable sainteté. Par Jésus Christ.
Première lecture : Romains 4, 1-8
Frères, que dirons-nous d’Abraham, notre ancêtre selon la chair ? Qu’a-t-il obtenu ? Si Abraham était devenu un homme juste par la pratique des œuvres, il aurait pu en tirer fierté, mais pas devant Dieu. Or, que dit l’Écriture ? Abraham eut foi en Dieu, et il lui fut accordé d’être juste. Si quelqu’un accomplit un travail, son salaire ne lui est pas accordé comme un don gratuit, mais comme un dû. Au contraire, si quelqu’un, sans rien accomplir, a foi en Celui qui rend juste l’homme impie, il lui est accordé d’être juste par sa foi. C’est ainsi que le psaume de David proclame heureux l’homme à qui Dieu accorde d’être juste, indépendamment de la pratique des œuvres : Heureux ceux dont les offenses ont été remises, et les péchés, effacés. Heureux l’homme dont le péché n’est pas compté par le Seigneur.

1. Heureux l’homme dont la faute est enlevée, et le péché remis ! Heureux l’homme dont le Seigneur ne retient pas l’offense, dont l’esprit est sans fraude !

Tout ce qui est couvert d’un voile sera dévoilé, tout ce qui est caché sera connu. Aussi tout ce que vous aurez dit dans les ténèbres sera entendu en pleine lumière, ce que vous aurez dit à l’oreille dans le fond de la maison sera proclamé sur les toits. Je vous le dis, à vous mes amis : Ne craignez pas ceux qui tuent le corps, et après cela ne peuvent rien faire de plus. Je vais vous montrer qui vous devez craindre :craignez celui qui, après avoir tué, a le pouvoir d’envoyer dans la géhenne. Oui, je vous le dis : c’est celui-là que vous devez craindre. Est-ce que l’on ne vend pas cinq moineaux pour deux sous. Or pas un seul n’est oublié au regard de Dieu. À plus forte raison les cheveux de votre tête sont tous comptés. Méditation
« Abraham eut foi en Dieu, et il lui fut accordé d’être juste ». Abraham est le père des croyants. Sa tenue dans la foi nous est donnée en exemple. Après avoir fait le tour des charlatans de médecine et après avoir dépensé bien des sous pour sa santé, Abraham ne trouva sa pleine satisfaction qu’auprès de Dieu. Sa foi lui a valu le salut. Dieu en qui il a placé sa foi l’a comblé de ses bienfaits. Tous ceux qui adhèrent à Dieu comme Abraham ont la joie d’être comptés parmi ses enfants, il leur assure la paix : « Soyez sans crainte ». Avec Dieu, le chrétien humble est sûr d’être entendu et d’être compris. Dieu qui n’abandonne pas les siens sait comment se faire présent à l’homme, même à son insu.

St. Teresa of Ávila

She was born in Ávila in Spain and entered the Carmelite convent there at the age of 20. St Teresa is an outstanding example of how the contemplative life can well up and overflow into action. She wrote much on the subject of contemplative prayer and her writings are still standard works today. She was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI in 1970.

First reading : Romans 4:1-8
What shall we say about Abraham, the ancestor from whom we are all descended? If Abraham was justified as a reward for doing something, he would really have had something to boast about, though not in God’s sight because scripture says: Abraham put his faith in God, and this faith was considered as justifying him. If a man has work to show, his wages are not considered as a favour but as his due; but when a man has nothing to show except faith in the one who justifies sinners, then his faith is considered as justifying him. Meditation
Through our faith in God we gain the forgiveness of our sins and are justified like Abraham. However, to attain the true perfection of faith, we must guard against all forms of hypocrisy, envy, backbiting, blackmail, greed, corruption and evil deeds. Jesus invites us to fear him who is able to kill and cast into hell and not men. Thus, no human should be an obstacle to living our true faith in God who holds account of every hair on our head. For in Him we live and have our being.

Saint Calliste 1er, pape et martyr

Ancien esclave, puis diacre du pape Zéphyrin, Calliste avait organisé à Rome le premier cimetière chrétien officiel qui, aujourd’hui encore, porte son nom. Elu pape en 217, cet homme d’action eut en face un antipape, le futur saint Hippolyte, savant théologien qui prétendait être le fidèle interprète de la Tradition. Malgré les violentes diatribes de ce dernier, Calliste instaura une discipline qui permettait la réconciliation des apostats. Il mourut en 222, victime d’une émeute antichrétienne au Transtévère.

Première lecture : Romains 3, 21-30
Frères, aujourd’hui, indépendamment de la Loi, Dieu a manifesté en quoi consiste sa justice : la Loi et les prophètes en sont témoins. Et cette justice de Dieu, donnée par la foi en Jésus Christ, elle est offerte à tous ceux qui croient. En effet, il n’y a pas de différence : tous les hommes ont péché, ils sont privés de la gloire de Dieu, et lui, gratuitement, les fait devenir justes par sa grâce, en vertu de la rédemption accomplie dans le Christ Jésus. Car le projet de Dieu était que le Christ soit instrument de pardon, en son sang, par le moyen de la foi. C’est ainsi que Dieu voulait manifester sa justice, lui qui, dans sa longanimité, avait fermé les yeux sur les péchés commis autrefois. Il voulait manifester, au temps présent, en quoi consiste sa justice, montrer qu’il est juste et rend juste celui qui a foi en Jésus. Alors, y a-t-il de quoi s’enorgueillir ? Absolument pas. Par quelle loi ? Par celle des œuvres que l’on pratique? Pas du tout. Mais par la loi de la foi. En effet, nous estimons que l’homme devient juste par la foi, indépendamment de la pratique de la loi de Moïse. Ou bien, Dieu serait-il seulement le Dieu des Juifs ? N’est-il pas aussi le Dieu des nations ? Bien sûr, il est aussi le Dieu des nations, puisqu’il n’y a qu’un seul Dieu : il rendra justes en vertu de la foi ceux qui ont reçu la circoncision, et aussi, au moyen de la foi, ceux qui ne l’ont pas reçue.

« En effet, nous estimons que l’homme devient juste par la foi… ». Saint Paul le dit dans ses exhortations : l’homme n’est justifié que par la foi. Pourquoi donc ? Parce que personne n’est capable de payer à Dieu tout ce qu’il Lui doit. Aucun homme ne peut réaliser la Loi dans sa totalité. Faire semblant d’en être le pratiquant sans défaut est clairement un mensonge. Oui, l’homme sauvé est celui qui met sa foi dans le Seigneur, qui croit en sa miséricorde et en son amour. Le bonheur de chacun se trouve dans l’accueil de la miséricorde de Dieu. Lui faire confiance est la seule manière d’être juste. Ne restons pas dans l’incrédulité, entrons dans la maison de la foi.

He lived in a time of peace under the emperor Alexander Severus, whose mother was a Christian. He may have been killed in a riot.

First reading : Romans 3:21-30
God’s justice that was made known through the Law and the Prophets has now been revealed outside the Law, since it is the same justice of God that comes through faith to everyone, Jew and pagan alike, who believes in Jesus Christ. Both Jew and pagan sinned and forfeited God’s glory, and both are justified through the free gift of his grace by being redeemed in Christ Jesus who was appointed by God to sacrifice his life so as to win reconciliation through faith. In this way God makes his justice known; first, for the past, when sins went unpunished because he held his hand, then, for the present age, by showing positively that he is just, and that he justifies everyone who believes in Jesus. So what becomes of our boasts? There is no room for them. What sort of law excludes them? The sort of law that tells us what to do? On the contrary, it is the law of faith, since, as we see it, a man is justified by faith and not by doing something the Law tells him to do. Is God the God of Jews alone and not of the pagans too? Of the pagans too, most certainly, since there is only one God.

Meditation
Sin is common to every person, no matter how highly placed. However, remaining in sin is rejecting Jesus, as the Pharisees and the Doctors of the law did in the Gospel of today. They rejected the prophets and killed them all to silence the Truth. But Truth can never be silenced. We are invited today to reject hypocrisy and evil, to be holy, real and stand by the truth of faith, for only this truth will set us free.

Aussi éminent par sa piété que par sa générosité, il sut se faire l’ami des petites gens et fut vite l’objet d’un culte populaire. Mais, en réalité, il n’était pas fait pour être roi.

La foi n’équivaut jamais à une quantité d’œuvres à accomplir pour s’assurer une quelconque garantie. Elle ne tient pas en un nombre déterminé d’actes à exécuter pour se reposer enfin. C’est un vivre ensemble avec Dieu où le croyant à toujours à faire pour se parfaire lui-même, de telle sorte qu’il ne trouvera pas assez de temps pour critiquer les autres. Quand on n’arrive pas à accomplir tout son devoir à quoi bon s’en prendre aux retardataires et aux paresseux ? Jésus invite les docteurs de la Loi à s’appliquer et à voir que le Maître de l’histoire « rendra à chacun selon ses œuvres ». Il ne faut donc pas continuer à vivre dans le mal comme s’il n’y aura pas de dénouement

He became King of England in 1042. He was regarded as a saint during his lifetime, renowned for his generosity to the Church and to the poor and for his readiness to listen to his subjects’ grievances. He died on 5th January 1066.

No matter who you are, if you pass judgement you have no excuse. In judging others you condemn yourself, since you behave no differently from those you judge. We know that God condemns that sort of behaviour impartially: and when you judge those who behave like this while you are doing exactly the same, do you think you will escape God’s judgement? Or are you abusing his abundant goodness, patience and toleration, not realising that this goodness of God is meant to lead you to repentance? Your stubborn refusal to repent is only adding to the anger God will have towards you on that day of anger when his just judgements will be made known. He will repay each one as his works deserve. For those who sought renown and honour and immortality by always doing good there will be eternal life; for the unsubmissive who refused to take truth for their guide and took depravity instead, there will be anger and fury. Pain and suffering will come to every human being who employs himself in evil – Jews first, but Greeks as well; renown, honour and peace will come to everyone who does good – Jews first, but Greeks as well. God has no favourites.

Meditation
We show that we love God when we practice justice and love especially to the weak and not by a foolish observance of religious rules like the Pharisees. Let us be people who put justice before sacrifice, love of God and neighbour before an external display of religious practices. Above all, we are called to be like Jesus: meek and humble of heart, instead of judging others, for in so doing we condemn ourselves. God will repay each of us according to his/her deeds.

Première lecture : Romains 1, 16-25
Frères, je n’ai pas honte de l’Évangile, car il est puissance de Dieu pour le salut de quiconque est devenu croyant, le Juif d’abord, et le païen. Dans cet Évangile se révèle la justice donnée par Dieu, celle qui vient de la foi et conduit à la foi, comme il est écrit : Celui qui est juste par la foi, vivra. Or la colère de Dieu se révèle du haut du ciel contre toute impiété et contre toute injustice des hommes qui, par leur injustice, font obstacle à la vérité. En effet, ce que l’on peut connaître de Dieu est clair pour eux, car Dieu le leur a montré clairement. Depuis la création du monde, on peut voir avec l’intelligence, à travers les œuvres de Dieu, ce qui de lui est invisible: sa puissance éternelle et sa divinité. Ils n’ont donc pas d’excuse, puisque, malgré leur connaissance de Dieu, ils ne lui ont pas rendu la gloire et l’action de grâce que l’on doit à Dieu. Ils se sont laissé aller à des raisonnements sans valeur, et les ténèbres ont rempli leurs cœurs privés d’intelligence. Ces soi-disant sages sont devenus fous ; ils ont échangé la gloire du Dieu impérissable contre des idoles représentant l’être humain périssable ou bien des volatiles, des quadrupèdes et des reptiles. Voilà pourquoi, à cause des convoitises de leurs cœurs, Dieu les a livrés à l’impureté, de sorte qu’ils déshonorent eux-mêmes leur corps. Ils ont échangé la vérité de Dieu contre le mensonge ; ils ont vénéré la création et lui ont rendu un culte plutôt qu’à son Créateur, lui qui est béni éternellement. Amen

Méditation
« Celui qui est juste par la foi, vivra ». La personne qui vit dans la foi est celle qui est beaucoup plus portée à soigner sont fort intérieur. S’attirer des honneurs ne l’intéresse pas. Elle se souvient de la grande critique des prophètes qui disent : « Ce peuple m’honore des lèvres mais son cœur est loin de moi ». La foi est enracinée dans le cœur, elle est loin d’être une question de superficialité. Le croyant véritable se préoccupe essentiellement de ce qui relève du cœur, de ce qui touche Dieu, de ce que Dieu regarde et considère. La méchanceté et les idolâtries sont les choses les plus abominables à l’actif des « soi-disant sages » ; ils aiment agir dans la fausseté et en cachette.

St. Josaphat
(c.1580 – 1623)

He was born in Ukraine of Orthodox parents. Josaphat joined the first monastery of the order of St Basil to be united to the Catholic Church: he was the first person to do so. He was ordained priest and, eventually and reluctantly, appointed bishop of Polotsk in 1617. Josaphat was murdered by a mob in 1623 while on a pastoral visit to Vitebsk.

Because of the Lord’s covenant and the ancestral laws, the Saints of God persevered in loving brotherhood, for there was always one spirit in them, and one faith.

If, charmed by their beauty, they have taken things for gods, let them know how much the Lord of these excels them, since the very Author of beauty has created them. Meditation
We are gradually moving towards the end of the liturgical year, and the sacred texts that the Church proposes to us speak of end times when Christ will return to judge the earth. Jesus shows us that disorderly attachment to the things of this world and seeking to preserve earthly life will do us no good. Only one thing is necessary: to surrender to the will of God and to keep our eyes fixed on the Kingdom of our Lord. Let us not be like the contemporaries of Noah and Lot. They received the warning, but they refused to listen and believe. Let us trust in God and ask him for the grace to be attentive to his word and to put it into practice.

Green
Wilfrid was born in Northumbria in 634. He took part in the Synod of Whitby (664), where he promoted Rome’s way of calculating the date of Easter, and the Roman form of Christian worship. He was missionary, evangelist, monk and bishop. He died in Oundle, in October 709.

I am not ashamed of the Good News: it is the power of God saving all who have faith – Jews first, but Greeks as well – since this is what reveals the justice of God to us: it shows how faith leads to faith, or as scripture says: The upright man finds life through faith. The anger of God is being revealed from heaven against all the impiety and depravity of men who keep truth imprisoned in their wickedness. For what can be known about God is perfectly plain to them since God himself has made it plain. Ever since God created the world his everlasting power and deity – however invisible – have been there for the mind to see in the things he has made. That is why such people are without excuse: they knew God and yet refused to honour him as God or to thank him; instead, they made nonsense out of logic and their empty minds were darkened. The more they called themselves philosophers, the more stupid they grew, until they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for a worthless imitation, for the image of mortal man, of birds, of quadrupeds and reptiles. That is why God left them to their filthy enjoyments and the practices with which they dishonour their own bodies, since they have given up divine truth for a lie and have worshipped and served creatures instead of the creator, who is blessed for ever. Meditation
Sometimes we are ashamed of expressing the fact that we are Christians for fear of being laughed at. Sometimes we refuse or reject the truth or chose not to stand for the truth because we want to protect our personal interest. In the gospel the Pharisee remains materialistic and refuses to recognise the presence of the TRUTH. Jesus then teaches us to be people who are pure within. Purity comes through the Good News, the one Paul is not ashamed of: it is the power of God saving all who have faith. We are called to be people of faith.

Élu à 76 ans comme simple pape de transition, Jean XXIII a pourtant chamboulé le Vatican pour se rapprocher du peuple, au point d’hériter du surnom de “bon pape” auprès des fidèles. L’italien Angelo Roncalli a profondément marqué l’Église par son pontificat. Celui qui devient Jean XXIII en 1958 crée principalement la surprise en lançant Vatican II, un concile qu’il veut synonyme d’aggiornamento, c’est-à-dire de “mise à jour”, moins de trois mois après son élection.

L’annonce de la Bonne Nouvelle de Jésus Christ est destinée à toutes les nations. Saint Paul dira que tous les hommes de la terre sont pécheurs, ils sont tous appelés à la sainteté en Jésus Christ sans exception. La reine de Saba montre l’exemple, elle s’est rendue quêter la Sagesse auprès de Salomon. Les gens de Ninive se sont détournés de leurs mauvaises conduites à l’appel de Jonas proclamant la Parole de Dieu. Jésus Christ est ici plus que tout autre prophète de Dieu. Quand sa Voix se lève, tout homme doit se mouvoir vers lui, tout homme doit se détourner de ses péchés et se convertir.
