Entré très tôt dans la Compagnie de Jésus, Jean François Régis (1597-1640) fut l’un des plus grands prédicateurs du XVIIe siècle, parcourant des régions qui avaient été très marquées par les Guerres de religion. Il mourut des suites d’épuisement.

1ère lecture : 1 R 21, 17-29
Après la mort de Naboth, la parole du Seigneur fut adressée au prophète Élie de Tishbé : « Lève-toi, va trouver Acab, qui règne sur Israël à Samarie. Il est en ce moment dans la vigne de Naboth, où il s’est rendu pour en prendre possession. Tu lui diras : “Ainsi parle le Seigneur : Tu as commis un meurtre, et maintenant tu prends possession. C’est pourquoi, ainsi parle le Seigneur : À l’endroit même où les chiens ont lapé le sang de Naboth, les chiens laperont ton sang à toi aussi.” » Acab dit à Élie : « Tu m’as donc retrouvé, toi, mon ennemi ! » Élie répondit : « Oui, je t’ai retrouvé. Puisque tu t’es déshonoré en faisant ce qui est mal aux yeux du Seigneur, je vais faire venir sur toi le malheur : je supprimerai ta descendance, j’exterminerai tous les mâles de ta maison, esclaves ou hommes libres en Israël. Je ferai à ta maison ce que j’ai fait à celle de Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, et à celle de Baasa, fils d’Ahias, tes prédécesseurs, car tu as provoqué ma colère et fait pécher Israël. Et le Seigneur a encore cette parole contre Jézabel : “Les chiens dévoreront Jézabel sous les murs de la ville de Yizréel !” Celui de la maison d’Acab qui mourra dans la ville sera dévoré par les chiens ; celui qui mourra dans la campagne sera dévoré par les oiseaux du ciel. » On n’a jamais vu personne se déshonorer comme Acab en faisant comme lui ce qui est mal aux yeux du Seigneur, sous l’influence de sa femme Jézabel. Il s’est conduit d’une manière abominable en s’attachant aux idoles, comme faisaient les Amorites que le Seigneur avait chassés devant les Israélites. Quand Acab entendit les paroles prononcées par Élie, il déchira ses habits, se couvrit le corps d’une toile à sac – un vêtement de pénitence – ; et il jeûnait, il gardait la toile à sac pour dormir, et il marchait lentement. Alors la parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Élie : « Tu vois comment Acab s’est humilié devant moi ! Puisqu’il s’est humilié devant moi, je ne ferai pas venir le malheur de son vivant ; c’est sous le règne de son fils que je ferai venir le malheur sur sa maison. »
Psaume : 50 (51), 3-4, 5-6ab, 11.16
R/ Pitié, Seigneur, car nous avons péché !
- Pitié pour moi, mon Dieu, dans ton amour, selon ta grande miséricorde, efface mon péché. Lave-moi tout entier de ma faute, purifie-moi de mon offense.
- Oui, je connais mon péché, ma faute est toujours devant moi. Contre toi, et toi seul, j’ai péché, ce qui est mal à tes yeux, je l’ai fait.
- Détourne ta face de mes fautes, enlève tous mes péchés. Libère-moi du sang versé, Dieu, mon Dieu sauveur, et ma langue acclamera ta justice.

Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis : Aimez vos ennemis, et priez pour ceux qui vous persécutent, afin d’être vraiment les fils de votre Père qui est aux cieux ; car il fait lever son soleil sur les méchants et sur les bons, il fait tomber la pluie sur les justes et sur les injustes. En effet, si vous aimez ceux qui vous aiment, quelle récompense méritez-vous ? Les publicains eux-mêmes n’en font-ils pas autant ? St Richard of Chichester (1197 – 1253)
Richard Wych was, born at Droitwich (then known as Wych) in about 1197. In 1252 the Pope appointed Richard to preach the Crusade. He died on 3rd April 1253. His body was brought back to Chichester, where he was immediately hailed as a saint.

Meditation
In today’s passage which is also based on the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus sets another higher level of observing the Law. He bases his teaching on love, which we can describe as “agape”, a selfless love which might not even be reciprocated and which reflects the love God himself has for humanity. Jesus showed on the cross the meaning of this true love, he forgave the same soldiers who tortured him and drilled heavy nails into his hands, “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.” The mentality of the time made it look so normal for people to hate their enemies and love those who loved them back. However, this makes no difference because even hardened criminals love those who love them. God lets rain fall on both the good and evil people. God’s love does not segregate or count on merits. The water that flowed from his side was full of love and was by far stronger than the hatred of those who accused him. He invites us there to be “perfect as your Father who is in heaven.”

Blessed Peter Snow and Ralph Grimston
Peter Snow a priest in Soissons, France and Ralph Grimston, his friend (a layman) were key figures in the English mission (1598). Both suffered death for preaching the gospel. They were beatified in 1987.

But he said, “I will not give you my vineyard.”’ Then his wife Jezebel said, ‘You make a fine king of Israel, and no mistake! Confront him with a couple of scoundrels who will accuse him like this, “You have cursed God and the king” Then take him outside and stone him to death.’ The men of Naboth’s town, the elders and nobles who lived in his town, did what Jezebel ordered, what was written in the letters she had sent them. They proclaimed a fast and put Naboth in the forefront of the people. Then the two scoundrels came and stood in front of him and made their accusation, ‘Naboth has cursed God and the king.’ They led him outside the town and stoned him to death. They then sent word to Jezebel, ‘Naboth has been stoned to death.’ When Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to Ahab, ‘Get up! Take possession of the vineyard which Naboth of Jezreel would not give you for money, for Naboth is no longer alive, he is dead.’ When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he got up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth of Jezreel and take possession of it.

Meditation
Jesus continues to put a higher level of understanding as he interprets some commands of the Mosaic Law. The text today talks about “an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth.” It is part of the Law of Talion (lex talionis), by which a punishment for an offence was supposed to be restricted to not more than the suffering that one experienced. Jesus’ approach gives q different kind of response. Turning the other cheek in our world today will be construed as cowardice but Jesus did what he preached; he kept silence when mocked and slapped at the Sanhedrin and then he said: “If there is something wrong in what I said, point it out… why do you strike me? This does not mean we are to allow people to walk over us and offer no resistance at all. In some circumstances we need to respond and many people following the example of Jesus responded to violence with a nonviolent approach. Our experience in today’s world has proven that violence only begets violence and radicalizes most of its victims who in turn become violent. Outstanding figures of nonviolence include Martin Luther King Jr, Mahatma Gandhi, Rosa Parks and Hildegard Meyer. All of these people were actively involved in the correction of seriously unjust situations.

Canonisée en 1867, Germaine (vers 1579-1601) connut une vie difficile du fait de son physique répugnant. Orpheline de mère peu après sa naissance, la seule joie qu’elle éprouvait était celle de parler avec Dieu. Après sa mort, plusieurs miracles lui furent attribués.

Sa femme Jézabel vint lui dire : « Pourquoi es-tu de mauvaise humeur ? Pourquoi ne veux-tu pas manger ? » Il répondit : « J’ai parlé à Naboth de Yizréel. Je lui ai dit : “Cède-moi ta vigne pour de l’argent, ou, si tu préfères, pour une autre vigne en échange.” Mais il a répondu : “Je ne te céderai pas ma vigne !” » Alors sa femme Jézabel lui dit : « Est-ce que tu es le roi d’Israël, oui ou non ? Lève-toi, mange, et retrouve ta bonne humeur : moi, je vais te donner la vigne de aboth. » Elle écrivit des lettres au nom d’Acab, elle les scella du sceau royal, et elle les adressa aux anciens et aux notables de la ville où habitait Naboth. Elle avait écrit dans ces lettres : « Proclamez un jeûne, faites comparaître Naboth devant le peuple. Placez en face de lui deux vauriens, qui témoigneront contre lui : “Tu as maudit Dieu et le roi !” Ensuite, faites-le sortir de la ville, lapidez-le, et qu’il meure ! » Les anciens et les notables qui habitaient la ville de Naboth firent ce que Jézabel avait ordonné dans ses lettres. Ils proclamèrent un jeûne et firent comparaître Naboth devant le peuple. Alors arrivèrent les deux individus qui se placèrent en face de lui et portèrent contre lui ce témoignage : « Naboth a maudit Dieu et le roi. » On fit sortir Naboth de la ville, on le lapida, et il mourut. Puis on envoya dire à Jézabel : « Naboth a été lapidé et il est mort. » Lorsque Jézabel en fut informée, elle dit à Acab : « Va, prends possession de la vigne de ce Naboth qui a refusé de la céder pour de l’argent, car il n’y a plus de Naboth : il est mort. » Quand Acab apprit que Naboth était mort, il se rendit à la vigne de Naboth et en prit possession.

Saint Bonaventure, évêque et docteur de l’Eglise
Jean Fidanza (1221-1274) prend le nom de Bonaventure quand il entre dans l’ordre franciscain, dont il sera ministre général à trente six-ans et où il jouera un rôle de pacificateur. Pour ce théologien, le verbe de Dieu est l’unique lumière qui donne la vraie science. La doctrine spirituelle contenue dans ses traités ascétiques et mystiques a fait donner à Bonaventure le titre de ‘’docteur séraphique’’. Cardinal-évêque d’Albano en 1273, il mourut pendant le concile œcuménique de Lyon en 1274.

Ainsi parle le Seigneur : Malheureux ! Assour, l’instrument de ma colère, le bâton de mon courroux. Je l’envoie contre une nation impie, je lui donne mission contre un peuple qui excite ma fureur, pour le mettre au pillage et emporter le butin, pour le piétiner comme la boue des chemins. Mais Assour ne l’entend pas ainsi, ce n’est pas du tout ce qu’il pense : ce qu’il veut, c’est détruire, exterminer quantité de nations. Car le roi d’Assour a dit : « C’est par la vigueur de ma main que j’ai agi, et par ma sagesse, car j’ai l’intelligence. J’ai déplacé les frontières des peuples, j’ai pillé leurs réserves ; fort entre les forts, j’ai détrôné des puissants. J’ai mis la main sur les richesses des peuples, comme sur un nid. Comme on ramasse des œufs abandonnés, j’ai ramassé toute la terre, et il n’y a pas eu un battement d’aile, pas un bec ouvert, pas un cri. » Mais le ciseau se glorifie-t-il aux dépens de celui qui s’en sert pour tailler ? La scie va-t-elle s’enfler d’orgueil aux dépens de celui qui la tient ? Comme si le bâton faisait mouvoir la main qui le brandit, comme si c’était le bois qui brandissait l’homme ! C’est pourquoi le Seigneur Dieu de l’univers fera dépérir les soldats bien nourris du roi d’Assour, et au lieu de sa gloire s’allumera un brasier, le brasier d’un incendie.

Meditation
Today, the Church celebrates the feast of Saint Barnabas whose original name was Joseph. He sold his property and gave the proceeds to the Apostles and was given the name, Barnabas which means “son of encouragement.” He convinced the community to accept Paul after his conversion and went with him to Antioch. The Gospel passage our Lord teaches on the Eucharist and reveals God’s hospitality. Everyone is invited to the banquet where we eat his flesh and drink his blood, although the Jews understood it as cannibalism. In this mystery we become the very person of Jesus Christ. The reality of Jesus’ real presence in the Eucharist is beyond human understanding, so are invited to experience it as it reveals our Lord’s extraordinary intimacy with us. Peter and the other Apostles remained faithful to the end and at the last Supper he said, “Take and eat, this is my body.” Saint Augustine in his Easter Sermon, 227 exhorts: “If we receive the Eucharist worthily, we become what we receive.” Through the Eucharist we enter into a unique personal relationship with the Trinity and with one another, the Body of Christ.

Sion, célèbre ton Sauveur, chante ton chef et ton pasteur par des hymnes et des chants.
Tant que tu peux, tu dois oser, car il dépasse tes louanges, tu ne peux trop le louer.
Le Pain vivant, le Pain de vie, il est aujourd’hui proposé comme objet de tes louanges.
Au repas sacré de la Cène, il est bien vrai qu’il fut donné au groupe des douze frères.
Louons-le à voix pleine et forte, que soit joyeuse et rayonnante l’allégresse de nos cœurs !
C’est en effet la journée solennelle où nous fêtons de ce banquet divin la première institution.
À ce banquet du nouveau Roi, la Pâque de la Loi nouvelle met fin à la Pâque ancienne.
L’ordre ancien le cède au nouveau, la réalité chasse l’ombre, et la lumière, la nuit.
Ce que fit le Christ à la Cène, il ordonna qu’en sa mémoire nous le fassions après lui.
Instruits par son précepte saint, nous consacrons le pain, le vin, en victime de salut.
C’est un dogme pour les chrétiens que le pain se change en son corps, que le vin devient son sang.
Ce qu’on ne peut comprendre et voir, notre foi ose l’affirmer, hors des lois de la nature.
L’une et l’autre de ces espèces, qui ne sont que de purs signes, voilent un réel divin.
Sa chair nourrit, son sang abreuve, mais le Christ tout entier demeure sous chacune des espèces.
On le reçoit sans le briser, le rompre ni le diviser ; il est reçu tout entier.
Qu’un seul ou mille communient, il se donne à l’un comme aux autres, il nourrit sans disparaître.
Bons et mauvais le consomment, mais pour un sort bien différent, pour la vie ou pour la mort.
Mort des pécheurs, vie pour les justes ; vois : ils prennent pareillement ; quel résultat différent !
Si l’on divise les espèces, n’hésite pas, mais souviens-toi qu’il est présent dans un fragment aussi bien que dans le tout.
Le signe seul est partagé, le Christ n’est en rien divisé, ni sa taille ni son état n’ont en rien diminué. *
Le voici, le pain des anges, il est le pain de l’homme en route, le vrai pain des enfants de Dieu, qu’on ne peut jeter aux chiens.
D’avance il fut annoncé par Isaac en sacrifice, par l’agneau pascal immolé, par la manne de nos pères.
Ô bon Pasteur, notre vrai pain, ô Jésus, aie pitié de nous, nourris-nous et protège-nous, fais-nous voir les biens éternels dans la terre des vivants.

Préface
Le Seigneur soit avec vous. Et avec votre esprit. Élevons notre cour. Nous le tournons vers le Seigneur. Rendons grâce au Seigneur notre Dieu. Cela est juste et bon.
Vraiment, il est juste et bon de te rendre gloire, de t’offrir notre action de grâce, toujours et en tout lieu, à toi, Père très saint, Dieu éternel et tout-puissant, par le Christ, notre Seigneur.
Dans le dernier repas qu’il prit avec ses Apôtres, afin que toutes les générations fassent mémoire du salut par la croix, il s’est offert à toi, comme l’Agneau sans péché, et tu as accueilli son sacrifice de louange.
Quand tes fidèles communient à ce sacrement, tu les sanctifies pour que tous les hommes, habitant le même univers, soient éclairés par la même foi et réunis par la même charité.
Nous venons à la table d’un si grand mystère nous imprégner de ta grâce et connaître déjà la vie du Royaume.
Voilà pourquoi le ciel et la terre t’adorent; ils chantent le cantique de l’Alliance nouvelle, et nous-mêmes, unissant notre voix à celle des anges, nous t’acclamons: Saint!…

Saint Anthony was first of all an Augustinian monk, and later a Franciscan. Illness prevented him going to Africa to preach. His sermons are full of gentleness, but he reproved the wicked with fearless severity – especially backsliding clergy and the oppressors of the weak.

Meditation
In today’s Gospel Jesus examines the issue of fulfilling one’s oath. In the Book on Number it is said, “If a man makes a vow to Yahweh or takes a formal pledge under oath, he must not break his word: whatever he promises by word of mouth he must do” Jesus’ standard goes way beyond this current requirement. You must not swear at all. All one needs to do is say “Yes” if he means “Yes” and “No” if he means “No”. Integrity of life must be a hallmark of Christian identity. One is therefore required to speak the truth because Jesus will affirm in the Gospel according to John, “…and the truth shall set you free.” There is therefore no need to swear on anything no matter how sacred

Saint Antoine de Padoue, prêtre et docteur de l’Eglise
Né à Lisbonne, Fernand fut d’abord chanoine régulier à Coïmbre. Il prit le nom d’Antoine quand il entra chez les Franciscains. D’abord retiré dans la solitude, il se voua ensuite à la prédication. Grâce à ses dons d’orateur et à la connaissance de l’Ecriture, son ministère fut fécond et justifie son titre de ‘’docteur évangélique’’. Il mourut à Padoue, en 1231, à l’âge de trente six-ans. On l’invoque pour retrouver les objets perdus. Mais lui-même, qui n’avait pas hésité à perdre sa vie pour le Christ, s’est retrouvé en lui avec une vie nouvelle.

Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis de ne pas jurer du tout, ni par le ciel, car c’est le trône de Dieu, ni par la terre, car elle est son marchepied, ni par Jérusalem, car elle est la Ville du grand Roi. Et ne jure pas non plus sur ta tête, parce que tu ne peux pas rendre un seul de tes cheveux blanc ou noir. Que votre parole soit “oui”, si c’est “oui”, “non”, si c’est “non”. Ce qui est en plus vient du Mauvais.

Gospel: Matthew 5:27-32
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You have learnt how it was said: You must not commit adultery. But I say this to you: if a man looks at a woman lustfully, he has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye should cause you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; for it will do you less harm to lose one part of you than to have your whole body thrown into hell. And if your right hand should cause you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; for it will do you less harm to lose one part of you than to have your whole body go to hell. ‘It has also been said: Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a writ of dismissal. But I say this to you: everyone who divorces his wife, except for the case of fornication, makes her an adulteress; and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.’

Meditation
As we read two days ago, Jesus did not come to abolish the Law but to complete it. The focus today is on the commandment: “You must not commit adultery”. In this case, adultery is understood as a sexual relationship between two people at least one of whom is already married to another person. Jesus presents it in another way when he says that for a man even to look at another woman with lust, he has already violated the spirit of the Law. Thus, it applies to both married and unmarried persons. The question on divorce was also clarified because in Deuteronomy 24:1, a man could divorce his wife and in most cases it was for flimsy reasons such cooking a bad meal. It was a man’s discretion to ask for a divorce and not the woman. Jesus therefore, puts man and woman morally on an absolutely equal level. A marriage covenant therefore has to be taken seriously by both parties. Divorce and adultery are serious issues in families and those who have gone through this experience need to be met with a lot of pastoral sensitivity.
