St Fidelis of Sigmaringen (1578 – 1622)
He was born in Sigmaringen in Germany. He joined the Capuchin Friars at the age of 35 and led a harsh life of prayer and vigils. He was murdered by a Calvinist mob at Seewis on 24 April 1622.

First reading: Acts 5:34-42
One member of the Sanhedrin, a Pharisee called Gamaliel, who was a doctor of the Law and respected by the whole people, stood up and asked to have the apostles taken outside for a time. Then he addressed the Sanhedrin, ‘Men of Israel, be careful how you deal with these people. There was Theudas who became notorious not so long ago. He claimed to be someone important, and he even collected about four hundred followers; but when he was killed, all his followers scattered and that was the end of them. And then there was Judas the Galilean, at the time of the census, who attracted crowds of supporters; but he got killed too, and all his followers dispersed. What I suggest, therefore, is that you leave these men alone and let them go. If this enterprise, this movement of theirs, is of human origin it will break up of its own accord; but if it does in fact come from God you will not only be unable to destroy them, but you might find yourselves fighting against God.’ His advice was accepted; and they had the apostles called in, gave orders for them to be flogged, warned them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them. And so they left the presence of the Sanhedrin glad to have had the honour of suffering humiliation for the sake of the name. They preached every day both in the Temple and in private houses, and their proclamation of the Good News of Christ Jesus was never interrupted.

R/ There is one thing I ask of the Lord, to live in the house of the Lord.

Gospel: John 6:1-15
Jesus went off to the other side of the Sea of Galilee – or of Tiberias – and a large crowd followed him, impressed by the signs he gave by curing the sick. Jesus climbed the hillside, and sat down there with his disciples. It was shortly before the Jewish feast of Passover. Looking up, Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, ‘Where can we buy some bread for these people to eat?’ He only said this to test Philip; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do. Philip answered, ‘Two hundred denarii would only buy enough to give them a small piece each.’ One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said, ‘There is a small boy here with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that between so many?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Make the people sit down.’ There was plenty of grass there, and as many as five thousand men sat down. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and gave them out to all who were sitting ready; he then did the same with the fish, giving out as much as was wanted. When they had eaten enough he said to the disciples, ‘Pick up the pieces left over, so that nothing gets wasted.’ So they picked them up, and filled twelve hampers with scraps left over from the meal of five barley loaves. The people, seeing this sign that he had given, said, ‘This really is the prophet who is to come into the world.’ Jesus, who could see they were about to come and take him by force and make him king, escaped back to the hills by himself.
Prayer over the Offerings
Accept in compassion, Lord, we pray, the offerings of your family, that under your protective care they may never lose what they have received, but attain the gifts that are eternal. Through Christ our Lord.

Christ our Lord was handed over for our transgressions and was raised again for our justification, alleluia.
Prayer after Communion
Keep safe, O Lord, we pray, those whom you have saved by your kindness, that, redeemed by the Passion of your Son, they may rejoice in his Resurrection. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
The Jewish Sahedrin was not prepared to accept the truth from the apostles. However, one of them, Gamaliel, tried to let them know that they cannot fight God. So, he called on the Sanhedrin to let the apostles be; if what they were saying and doing came from God, it would stay’; if not it would bubble off. In our Gospel, Jesus fed so many thousands with just five loaves and two fish. This miracle shows the power of God over natural laws and his concern for others. If we therefore open our hearts to him, he will come into our lives and he will act. For God nothing is impossible!

St Adalbert of Prague
He was martyred at Lydda (now in Israel) in about 303, during the persecution of Diocletian. His cult spread quickly through both the East and the West.

You have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and seem determined to fix the guilt of this man’s death on us.’ In reply Peter and the apostles said, ‘Obedience to God comes before obedience to men; it was the God of our ancestors who raised up Jesus, but it was you who had him executed by hanging on a tree. By his own right hand God has now raised him up to be leader and saviour, to give repentance and forgiveness of sins through him to Israel. We are witnesses to all this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.’ This so infuriated them that they wanted to put them to death.

Meditation
Dear brothers and sisters, both St George and St Adalbert showed great courage and trust in God. They witnessed to their faith and stood their grounds against heretics and those who taught the wrong doctrine. Today, in the midst of a cacophony of various religious movements in our society, each of us must be ready to set the record straight and teach the right doctrine as we received from the Church. Unfortunately we have some Christians, especially our youth, who leave the Catholic church and go into some deleterious sects and cults. Many come back to their senses when the harm has already been done; but some never ever get it straight again.
In our First Reading, the Apostles make it clear to the Jewish leaders that obedience to God comes before obedience to man. The will of God must always be done even if this will set us against the best of our friends. There is a price to pay for being a good disciple of Jesus Christ. John the Baptist tells his disciples that there is someone coming after him, the Lamb of God , who is greater and more important. Anyone who believes in this Lamb of God will have eternal life. We admire the humility of John who gave the right place to Jesus. He, John is only the harbinger, the forerunner, not the Messiah himself. Many of us lack the humility of readily accepting to play second fiddle. But John teaches us that there is greatness in sincere humility.

Saint Georges, martyr
Celui que les Orientaux appellent ‘’le grand martyr’’ fut décapité à Lydda (Lod) en Palestine, vers 303. Sa légende le montre triomphant d’un dragon et en fait le type du chevalier affrontant les forces du mal. Il est le patron de l’Angleterre depuis le temps des Croisades.

Dieu, quand tu sortis à la tête de ton peuple, quand tu marchas dans le désert, la terre trembla, les cieux mêmes fondirent en face de Dieu. Alléluia.

The high priest intervened with all his supporters from the party of the Sadducees. Prompted by jealousy, they arrested the apostles and had them put in the common gaol. But at night the angel of the Lord opened the prison gates and said as he led them out, ‘Go and stand in the Temple, and tell the people all about this new Life.’ They did as they were told; they went into the Temple at dawn and began to preach. When the high priest arrived, he and his supporters convened the Sanhedrin – this was the full Senate of Israel – and sent to the gaol for them to be brought. But when the officials arrived at the prison they found they were not inside, so they went back and reported, ‘We found the gaol securely locked and the warders on duty at the gates, but when we unlocked the door we found no one inside.’ When the captain of the Temple and the chief priests heard this news they wondered what this could mean. Then a man arrived with fresh news. ‘At this very moment’ he said, ‘the men you imprisoned are in the Temple. They are standing there preaching to the people.’ The captain went with his men and fetched them. They were afraid to use force in case the people stoned them.

No one who believes in him will be condemned; but whoever refuses to believe is condemned already, because he has refused to believe in the name of God’s only Son. Meditation
Dear brothers and sisters prompted by jealousy, some members of the Jewish Sanhedrin decided that the apostles be arrested and imprisoned. And they did, but when they put them in prison, they were miraculously released at night. No one can fight God because in the end, the will of God will always triumph. For those who trust in God, everything always works out for the good. That is why in the Gospel, we are told that God so loved us that he sent His only Son to die for us. We can never measure this love; but we can be sure that as long as we put our trust in God, there is nothing that we need to fear. Unfortunately, many Christians are still found wanting in this respect. Somehow, we seem to fret just when we should put our hope and trust in God. We get intimidated by human forces and we shy out of various challenges to witness to Christ. May the readings of today put new spirit and courage in each one of us.

Prière d’ouverture
Chaque année, Seigneur, tu nous fais revivre le mystère pascal où l’homme, rétabli dans sa dignité, trouve l’espérance de la résurrection ; donne-nous de toujours accueillir avec amour ce que nous célébrons dans la foi. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Ac 5, 17-26
En ces jours-là, intervint le grand prêtre, ainsi que tout son entourage, c’est-à-dire le groupe des sadducéens, qui étaient remplis d’une ardeur jalouse pour la Loi. Ils mirent la main sur les Apôtres et les placèrent publiquement sous bonne garde. Mais, pendant la nuit, l’ange du Seigneur ouvrit les portes de la prison et les fit sortir. Il leur dit : « Partez, tenez-vous dans le Temple et là, dites au peuple toutes ces paroles de vie. » Ils l’écoutèrent ; dès l’aurore, ils entrèrent dans le Temple, et là, ils enseignaient. Alors arriva le grand prêtre, ainsi que son entourage. Ils convoquèrent le Conseil suprême, toute l’assemblée des anciens d’Israël, et ils envoyèrent chercher les Apôtres dans leur cachot. En arrivant, les gardes ne les trouvèrent pas à la prison. Ils revinrent donc annoncer : « Nous avons trouvé le cachot parfaitement verrouillé, et les gardes en faction devant les portes ; mais, quand nous avons ouvert, nous n’avons trouvé personne à l’intérieur. » Ayant entendu ce rapport, le commandant du Temple et les grands prêtres, tout perplexes, se demandaient ce qu’il adviendrait de cette affaire. Là-dessus, quelqu’un vient leur annoncer : « Les hommes que vous aviez mis en prison, voilà qu’ils se tiennent dans le Temple et enseignent le peuple ! » Alors, le commandant partit avec son escorte pour les ramener, mais sans violence, parce qu’ils avaient peur d’être lapidés par le peuple.

Celui qui croit en lui échappe au Jugement ; celui qui ne croit pas est déjà jugé, du fait qu’il n’a pas cru au nom du Fils unique de Dieu. Et le Jugement, le voici : la lumière est venue dans le monde, et les hommes ont préféré les ténèbres à la lumière, parce que leurs œuvres étaient mauvaises. Saint Anselme, évêque et docteur de l’Eglise
Chercher à comprendre ce que l’on croit ! Répondre à cette exigence de l’esprit, parce que c’est aussi l’exigence d’une foi authentique, tel fut le projet théologique d’Anselme (1033-1109), originaire d’Aoste, moine puis abbé de l’abbaye bénédictine du Bec (Normandie), et enfin archevêque de Cantorbéry. Dans son œuvre théologique, il voulut montrer que les vérités de la foi sont sources de lumière pour le croyant et s’impliquent logiquement les unes les autres. Par ce souci rationnel, Anselme, qui a encore le charme de ses Pères, annonce déjà la rigueur de la scolastique. Ce théologien de l’amour de Dieu est aussi un lutteur qui souffrit l’exil à deux reprises pour avoir défendu les droits de l’Eglise contre les rois de l’Angleterre.

1ère lecture : Ac 4, 32-37
La multitude de ceux qui étaient devenus croyants avait un seul cœur et une seule âme ; et personne ne disait que ses biens lui appartenaient en propre, mais ils avaient tout en commun. C’est avec une grande puissance que les Apôtres rendaient témoignage de la résurrection du Seigneur Jésus, et une grâce abondante reposait sur eux tous. Aucun d’entre eux n’était dans l’indigence, car tous ceux qui étaient propriétaires de domaines ou de maisons les vendaient, et ils apportaient le montant de la vente pour le déposer aux pieds des Apôtres ; puis on le distribuait en fonction des besoins de chacun. Il y avait un lévite originaire de Chypre, Joseph, surnommé Barnabé par les Apôtres, ce qui se traduit : « homme du réconfort ». Il vendit un champ qu’il possédait et en apporta l’argent qu’il déposa aux pieds des Apôtres.

After some years as abbot, he succeeded his master Lanfranc as archbishop of Canterbury. He died at Canterbury on 21 April 1109. He is remembered for his theological learning and writings.

First reading Acts 4:32-37
The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul; no one claimed for his own use anything that he had, as everything they owned was held in common. The apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power, and they were all given great respect. None of their members was ever in want, as all those who owned land or houses would sell them, and bring the money from them, to present it to the apostles; it was then distributed to any members who might be in need. There was a Levite of Cypriot origin called Joseph whom the apostles surnamed Barnabas (which means ‘son of encouragement’). He owned a piece of land and he sold it and brought the money, and presented it to the apostles.

If you do not believe me when I speak about things in this world, how are you going to believe me when I speak to you about heavenly things? Meditation
Beloved brothers and sisters, today we celebrate the memory of one of the great scholars in Church history. St Anselm was Archbishop of Canterbury and Doctor of the Church. In his days, scholars freely discussed the existence and nonexistence of God. In order to bring about the necessary clarification, St Anselm wrote a treatise in which he made it clear that the unaided human reason can only know so much about God; but if we really want to know God as He is, then the human intellect must seek a higher intellect, called Faith, Faith at this level seeks understanding; hence the title of Anselm’s reflection was: Fides Quaerens Intellectum. In and through Faith, we can understand reality in its entirety as it full is. Hence one of Anselm’s maxim was: Credo ut Intelligam (I believe that I may know). So contrary to what many people often think, Faith uplifts the human intellect so that we may understand reality. God is that than which none greater can exist; and this we can only understand if the human intellect submits to the higher intellect of Faith. The Readings today tell us how Christians should be united in their faith and love for one another. We all belong to Christ and therefore in and through Him, all Christians should be concerned about each other

Meditation
In our First Reading today, when the Jewish leaders decided to release Peter and John, they warned them not to preach Christ again. But the two went immediately and continued their mission of proclaiming Christ. This is what is expected of each Christian; we do not preach in order to please anyone, nor are we ever intimidated by anyone and made to abandon our divine task. To remain so firm, we need the gift of courage. Baptism gives us the courage to be a child of God and member of the Church. That is why in the Gospel today, Jesus insists with Nicodemus that unless one is baptized he cannot enter the Kingdom of heaven.

Il y avait un homme, un pharisien nommé Nicodème ; c’était un notable parmi les Juifs. Il vint trouver Jésus pendant la nuit. Première lecture (Ac 4, 32-35)
La multitude de ceux qui étaient devenus croyants avait un seul cœur et une seule âme ; et personne ne disait que ses biens lui appartenaient en propre, mais ils avaient tout en commun. C’est avec une grande puissance que les Apôtres rendaient témoignage de la résurrection du Seigneur Jésus, et une grâce abondante reposait sur eux tous. Aucun d’entre eux n’était dans l’indigence, car tous ceux qui étaient propriétaires de domaines ou de maisons les vendaient, et ils apportaient le montant de la vente pour le déposer aux pieds des Apôtres ; puis on le distribuait en fonction des besoins de chacun. – Parole du Seigneur.

La pierre qu’ont rejetée les bâtisseurs est devenue la pierre d’angle : c’est là l’œuvre du Seigneur, la merveille devant nos yeux. Deuxième lecture (1 Jn 5, 1-6)
Bien-aimés, celui qui croit que Jésus est le Christ, celui-là est né de Dieu ; celui qui aime le Père qui a engendré aime aussi le Fils qui est né de lui. Voici comment nous reconnaissons que nous aimons les enfants de Dieu : lorsque nous aimons Dieu et que nous accomplissons ses commandements. Car tel est l’amour de Dieu : garder ses commandements ; et ses commandements ne sont pas un fardeau, puisque tout être qui est né de Dieu est vainqueur du monde. Or la victoire remportée sur le monde, c’est notre foi. Qui donc est vainqueur du monde ? N’est-ce pas celui qui croit que Jésus est le Fils de Dieu ? C’est lui, Jésus Christ, qui est venu par l’eau et par le sang : non pas seulement avec l’eau, mais avec l’eau et avec le sang. Et celui qui rend témoignage, c’est l’Esprit, car l’Esprit est la vérité. – Parole du Seigneur.

Évangile (Jn 20, 19-31)
C’était après la mort de Jésus. Le soir venu, en ce premier jour de la semaine, alors que les portes du lieu où se trouvaient les disciples étaient verrouillées par crainte des Juifs, Jésus vint, et il était là au milieu d’eux. Il leur dit : « La paix soit avec vous ! » Après cette parole, il leur montra ses mains et son côté. Les disciples furent remplis de joie en voyant le Seigneur. Jésus leur dit de nouveau : « La paix soit avec vous ! De même que le Père m’a envoyé, moi aussi, je vous envoie. » Ayant ainsi parlé, il souffla sur eux et il leur dit : « Recevez l’Esprit Saint. À qui vous remettrez ses péchés, ils seront remis ; à qui vous maintiendrez ses péchés, ils seront maintenus. » Or, l’un des Douze, Thomas, appelé Didyme (c’est-à-dire Jumeau), n’était pas avec eux quand Jésus était venu. Les autres disciples lui disaient : « Nous avons vu le Seigneur ! » Mais il leur déclara : « Si je ne vois pas dans ses mains la marque des clous, si je ne mets pas mon doigt dans la marque des clous, si je ne mets pas la main dans son côté, non, je ne croirai pas ! » Huit jours plus tard, les disciples se trouvaient de nouveau dans la maison, et Thomas était avec eux. Jésus vient, alors que les portes étaient verrouillées, et il était là au milieu d’eux. Il dit : « La paix soit avec vous ! » Puis il dit à Thomas : « Avance ton doigt ici, et vois mes mains ; avance ta main, et mets-la dans mon côté : cesse d’être incrédule, sois croyant. » Alors Thomas lui dit : « Mon Seigneur et mon Dieu ! » Jésus lui dit : « Parce que tu m’as vu, tu crois. Heureux ceux qui croient sans avoir vu. » Il y a encore beaucoup d’autres signes que Jésus a faits en présence des disciples et qui ne sont pas écrits dans ce livre. Mais ceux-là ont été écrits pour que vous croyiez que Jésus est le Christ, le Fils de Dieu, et pour qu’en croyant, vous ayez la vie en son nom. – Acclamons la Paro
