First reading: Exodus 12:1-8,11-14
The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: ‘This month is to be the first of all the others for you, the first month of your year. Speak to the whole community of Israel and say, “On the tenth day of this month each man must take an animal from the flock, one for each family: one animal for each household. If the household is too small to eat the animal, a man must join with his neighbour, the nearest to his house, as the number of persons requires. You must take into account what each can eat in deciding the number for the animal. It must be an animal without blemish, a male one year old; you may take it from either sheep or goats. You must keep it till the fourteenth day of the month when the whole assembly of the community of Israel shall slaughter it between the two evenings. Some of the blood must then be taken and put on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses where it is eaten. That night, the flesh is to be eaten, roasted over the fire; it must be eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. You shall eat it like this: with a girdle round your waist, sandals on your feet, a staff in your hand. You shall eat it hastily: it is a passover in honour of the Lord. That night, I will go through the land of Egypt and strike down all the first-born in the land of Egypt, man and beast alike, and I shall deal out punishment to all the gods of Egypt, I am the Lord! The blood shall serve to mark the houses that you live in. When I see the blood I will pass over you and you shall escape the destroying plague when I strike the land of Egypt. - How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise; I will call on the Lord’s name.

Gospel: John 13:1-15
It was before the festival of the Passover, and Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to pass from this world to the Father. He had always loved those who were his in the world, but now he showed how perfect his love was. They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, to betray him. Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God and was returning to God, and he got up from table, removed his outer garment and, taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist; he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel he was wearing. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, ‘Lord, are you going to wash my feet?’ Jesus answered, ‘At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you will understand.’ ‘Never!’ said Peter ‘You shall never wash my feet.’ Jesus replied, ‘If I do not wash you, you can have nothing in common with me.’ ‘Then, Lord,’ said Simon Peter ‘not only my feet, but my hands and my head as well!’ Jesus said, ‘No one who has taken a bath needs washing, he is clean all over. You too are clean, though not all of you are.’ He knew who was going to betray him, that was why he said, ‘though not all of you are.’ When he had washed their feet and put on his clothes again he went back to the table. ‘Do you understand’ he said ‘what I have done to you? You call me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am. If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you should wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.’
Prayer over the Offerings
Grant us, O Lord, we pray, that we may participate worthily in these mysteries, for whenever the memorial of this sacrifice is celebrated the work of our redemption is accomplished. Through Christ our Lord.

This is the Body that will be given up for you; this is the Chalice of the new covenant in my Blood, says the Lord; do this, whenever you receive it, in memory of me.
Prayer after Communion
Grant, almighty God, that, just as we are renewed by the Supper of your Son in this present age, so we may enjoy his banquet for all eternity. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
On Holy Thursday, we remember the Last Supper during which Jesus instituted the Sacrament of the Eucharist and the Sacrament of the Priesthood. Beloved brothers and sisters, today our thoughts are on three important mysteries in our lives as Christians. First is the Mystery of the Eucharist, the sacramental presence of Jesus Christ among us. Every day when we celebrate Holy Mass, this miracle takes place. Jesus, the Immanuel, comes in a true and indisputable manner to us. Unfortunately, many Christians who are longing for miracles do not seem to understand or experience this Eucharistic miracle. So, they leave the Church and go to some deleterious sects for miracles! Today we equally celebrate the mystery of the priesthood. No one takes this honour on himself, but each priest is chosen from among us, just like Aaron was, and is ordained priest of the order of Melchizedek, once and for ever. Again, and perhaps because some of us are so used to priests, we sometimes take the priesthood for granted. But without the Priesthood, God will not come among us in a the sacrament of the Eucharist. Finally, on Holy Thursday, the Mandatum of Jesus is the Mystery of Love. Love conquers everything and cuts through all barriers. Love makes it possible for us to serve each other and to live harmoniously with each one.

En ces jours-là, dans le pays d’Égypte, le Seigneur dit à Moïse et à son frère Aaron : « Ce mois-ci sera pour vous le premier des mois, il marquera pour vous le commencement de l’année. Parlez ainsi à toute la communauté d’Israël : le dix de ce mois, que l’on prenne un agneau par famille, un agneau par maison. Si la maisonnée est trop peu nombreuse pour un agneau, elle le prendra avec son voisin le plus proche, selon le nombre des personnes. Vous choisirez l’agneau d’après ce que chacun peut manger. Ce sera une bête sans défaut, un mâle, de l’année. Vous prendrez un agneau ou un chevreau. Vous le garderez jusqu’au quatorzième jour du mois. Dans toute l’assemblée de la communauté d’Israël, on l’immolera au coucher du soleil. On prendra du sang, que l’on mettra sur les deux montants et sur le linteau des maisons où on le mangera. On mangera sa chair cette nuit-là, on la mangera rôtie au feu, avec des pains sans levain et des herbes amères. Vous mangerez ainsi : la ceinture aux reins, les sandales aux pieds, le bâton à la main. Vous mangerez en toute hâte : c’est la Pâque du Seigneur. Je traverserai le pays d’Égypte, cette nuit-là ; je frapperai tout premier-né au pays d’Égypte, depuis les hommes jusqu’au bétail. Contre tous les dieux de l’Égypte j’exercerai mes jugements : Je suis le Seigneur. Le sang sera pour vous un signe, sur les maisons où vous serez. Deuxième lecture (1 Co 11, 23-26)

Évangile (Jn 13, 1-15)
Avant la fête de la Pâque, sachant que l’heure était venue pour lui de passer de ce monde à son Père, Jésus, ayant aimé les siens qui étaient dans le monde, les aima jusqu’au bout. Au cours du repas, alors que le diable a déjà mis dans le cœur de Judas, fils de Simon l’Iscariote, l’intention de le livrer, Jésus, sachant que le Père a tout remis entre ses mains, qu’il est sorti de Dieu et qu’il s’en va vers Dieu, se lève de table, dépose son vêtement, et prend un linge qu’il se noue à la ceinture ; puis il verse de l’eau dans un bassin. Alors il se mit à laver les pieds des disciples et à les essuyer avec le linge qu’il avait à la ceinture. Il arrive donc à Simon-Pierre, qui lui dit : « C’est toi, Seigneur, qui me laves les pieds ? » Jésus lui répondit : « Ce que je veux faire, tu ne le sais pas maintenant ; plus tard tu comprendras. » Pierre lui dit : « Tu ne me laveras pas les pieds ; non, jamais ! » Jésus lui répondit : « Si je ne te lave pas, tu n’auras pas de part avec moi. » Simon-Pierre lui dit : « Alors, Seigneur, pas seulement les pieds, mais aussi les mains et la tête ! » Jésus lui dit : « Quand on vient de prendre un bain, on n’a pas besoin de se laver, sinon les pieds : on est pur tout entier. Vous-mêmes, vous êtes purs, mais non pas tous. » Il savait bien qui allait le livrer ; et c’est pourquoi il disait : « Vous n’êtes pas tous purs. » Quand il leur eut lavé les pieds, il reprit son vêtement, se remit à table et leur dit : « Comprenez-vous ce que je viens de faire pour vous ? Vous m’appelez “Maître” et “Seigneur”, et vous avez raison, car vraiment je le suis. Si donc moi, le Seigneur et le Maître, je vous ai lavé les pieds, vous aussi, vous devez vous laver les pieds les uns aux autres. C’est un exemple que je vous ai donné afin que vous fassiez, vous aussi, comme j’ai fait pour vous. » – Acclamons la Parole de Dieu.

St John Baptist de la Salle (1651 – 1719)
He was born in Rheims in France in 1651. He became a priest and devoted himself wholeheartedly to the education of children, founding schools for the poor. He and his colleagues formed a congregation called the Brothers of the Christian Schools, in whose cause he suffered many tribulations. He died in Rouen in 1719.

Meditation
In our Reading today, Yahweh speaks through the prophet Isaiah to make us realize that each and everyone of us is a careful plan of God, who knit us in our mother’s womb and called each of us for a purpose in this world. Unfortunately, many of us spend our lives doing the wrong things and never sitting down to ask ourselves the purpose for which God created us. None of us is the product of chance; we are each and all part of the eternal plan of God. So, we cannot afford to waste our lives here on earth. Instead we must each become a light to enlighten others and drive away the force of evil. In the Gospel, Jesus foretells that one of his own will betray him; he equally foretells the triple denial of Peter. It is significant that these two events are disclosed in one evening. Peter and Judas both denied Jesus; but the difference lies in the fact that Peter was quick to recognize his error and repent while Judas got frustrated and hanged himself. There is no sin that God cannot forget, so there is no reason why any of us should despair because of what we have done.

One of the Twelve, the man called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, ‘What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you?’ They paid him thirty silver pieces, and from that moment he looked for an opportunity to betray him. Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, ‘Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the passover?’ ‘Go to so-and-so in the city’ he replied ‘and say to him, “The Master says: My time is near. It is at your house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples.”’ The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover. When evening came he was at table with the twelve disciples. And while they were eating he said ‘I tell you solemnly, one of you is about to betray me.’ They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, ‘Not I, Lord, surely?’ He answered, ‘Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me, will betray me. The Son of Man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! Meditation
In the Readings of this day, Yahweh has given Isaiah the disciple’s tongue to proclaim that God loves each of us. For those who trust in God, God comes to them so that they are not touched by insults and all evil. We should all be happy to have such a God who is ready to help us at every moment. Unfortunately, many of us do not seem to care about God. We worry about the glamour and attractions of the world. We easily betray our God just like Judas did in the Gospel today. He went to the chief priests and got money in order to betray his master. At the same time the rest of the apostles made preparations for the Last Supper Meal with their Master. While they were at Supper, Jesus once more revealed that one of them would betray him. The Apostles were all surprised and even Judas, who knew what he had done, pretended to be surprised too. At one moment or another some of us pretend to be what we are not. We cannot pretend before God because He knows us through and through.
EASTER TRIDUUM
The Paschal Triduum of the Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection, is the culmination point of the entire Liturgical Year. The Triduum refers to the Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday.

A 7 ans, elle transmettait déjà le catéchisme à ses camarades. A 16 ans, elle travaillait aux champs pour venir en aide à ses parents. Paralysée à 22 ans, elle fonda, malgré cela, la Congrégation des Sœurs de Notre-Dame pour l’enseignement et l’éducation des jeunes filles pauvres.

Au nom de Jésus, que tout être vivant dans les cieux, sur la terre et dans l’abîme tombe à genoux. Pour s’être fait obéissant jusqu’à la mort, et la mort sur une croix, Jésus Christ est Seigneur, à la gloire de Dieu le Père.

Le Seigneur mon Dieu m’a donné le langage des disciples, pour que je puisse, d’une parole, soutenir celui qui est épuisé. Chaque matin, il éveille, il éveille mon oreille pour qu’en disciple, j’écoute. Le Seigneur mon Dieu m’a ouvert l’oreille, et moi, je ne me suis pas révolté, je ne me suis pas dérobé. J’ai présenté mon dos à ceux qui me frappaient, et mes joues à ceux qui m’arrachaient la barbe. Je n’ai pas caché ma face devant les outrages et les crachats. Le Seigneur mon Dieu vient à mon secours ; c’est pourquoi je ne suis pas atteint par les outrages, c’est pourquoi j’ai rendu ma face dure comme pierre : je sais que je ne serai pas confondu. Evangile : Mt 26, 14-25
En ce temps-là, l’un des Douze, nommé Judas Iscariote, se rendit chez les grands prêtres et leur dit : « Que voulez-vous me donner, si je vous le livre ? » Ils lui remirent trente pièces d’argent. Et depuis, Judas cherchait une occasion favorable pour le livrer. Le premier jour de la fête des pains sans levain, les disciples s’approchèrent et dirent à Jésus: « Où veux-tu que nous te fassions les préparatifs pour manger la Pâque ? » Il leur dit: « Allez à la ville, chez untel, et dites-lui: “Le Maître te fait dire: Mon temps est proche; c’est chez toi que je veux célébrer la Pâque avec mes disciples.” » Les disciples firent ce que Jésus leur avait prescrit et ils préparèrent la Pâque. Le soir venu, Jésus se trouvait à table avec les Douze. Pendant le repas, il déclara: « Amen, je vous le dis: l’un de vous va me livrer.» Profondément attristés, ils se mirent à lui demander, chacun son tour: « Serait-ce moi, Seigneur ? » Prenant la parole, il dit: « Celui qui s’est servi au plat en même temps que moi, celui-là va me livrer. Le Fils de l’homme s’en va, comme il est écrit à son sujet; mais malheureux celui par qui le Fils de l’homme est livré ! Il vaudrait mieux pour lui qu’il ne soit pas né, cet homme-là ! » Judas, celui qui le livrait, prit la parole : « Rabbi, serait-ce moi ? » Jésus lui répond : « C’est toi-même qui l’as dit ! »

Saint Jean-Baptiste de la Salle, prêtre
Ordonné prêtre à Reims en 1678, Jean-Baptiste de la Salle (1651-1719) fonde les Frères des Ecoles chrétiennes pour répondre à un besoin urgent de son temps : l’éducation des enfants, spécialement des plus pauvres. Il dote ses Frères de méthodes pédagogiques adaptées aux milieux populaires, en même temps qu’il leur communique son zèle apostolique. Il termine sa vie dans le silence, révélant à tous sa douceur et son humilité face aux calomnies et à la trahison. Il meurt le Vendredi saint, 7 avril 1719.

En ce temps-là, au cours du repas que Jésus prenait avec ses disciples, il fut bouleversé en son esprit, et il rendit ce témoignage : « Amen, amen, je vous le dis : l’un de vous me livrera. » Les disciples se regardaient les uns les autres avec embarras, ne sachant pas de qui Jésus parlait. Il y avait à table, appuyé contre Jésus, l’un de ses disciples, celui que Jésus aimait. Simon-Pierre lui fait signe de demander à Jésus de qui il veut parler. Le disciple se penche donc sur la poitrine de Jésus et lui dit : « Seigneur, qui est-ce ? » Jésus lui répond : « C’est celui à qui je donnerai la bouchée que je vais tremper dans le plat. » Il trempe la bouchée, et la donne à Judas, fils de Simon l’Iscariote. Et, quand Judas eut pris la bouchée, Satan entra en lui. Jésus lui dit alors : « Ce que tu fais, fais-le vite. » Mais aucun des convives ne comprit pourquoi il lui avait dit cela. Comme Judas tenait la bourse commune, certains pensèrent que Jésus voulait lui dire d’acheter ce qu’il fallait pour la fête, ou de donner quelque chose aux pauvres. Judas prit donc la bouchée, et sortit aussitôt. Or il faisait nuit. Quand il fut sorti, Jésus déclara : « Maintenant le Fils de l’homme est glorifié, et Dieu est glorifié en lui. Si Dieu est glorifié en lui, Dieu aussi le glorifiera ; et il le glorifiera bientôt. Petits enfants, c’est pour peu de temps encore que je suis avec vous. Vous me chercherez, et, comme je l’ai dit aux Juifs : “Là où je vais, vous ne pouvez pas aller”, je vous le dis maintenant à vous aussi. » Simon-Pierre lui dit : « Seigneur, où vas-tu ? » Jésus lui répondit : « Là où je vais, tu ne peux pas me suivre maintenant ; tu me suivras plus tard. » Pierre lui dit : « Seigneur, pourquoi ne puis-je pas te suivre à présent ? Je donnerai ma vie pour toi ! » Jésus réplique : « Tu donneras ta vie pour moi ? Amen, amen, je te le dis : le coq ne chantera pas avant que tu m’aies renié trois fois. »

Saint William of Eskilsoe
He was born in 1125 and was a French religious who willingly led a life with few comforts. He spent many hours in prayer and became a scholar of religious law. An account written after his death described him as “famous for his life and miracles.” He died in 1203.

Gospel: John 12:1-11
Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom he had raised from the dead. They gave a dinner for him there; Martha waited on them and Lazarus was among those at table. Mary brought in a pound of very costly ointment, pure nard, and with it anointed the feet of Jesus, wiping them with her hair; the house was full of the scent of the ointment. Then Judas Iscariot – one of his disciples, the man who was to betray him – said, ‘Why wasn’t this ointment sold for three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor?’ He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he was in charge of the common fund and used to help himself to the contributions. So Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone; she had to keep this scent for the day of my burial. You have the poor with you always, you will not always have me.’ Meanwhile a large number of Jews heard that he was there and came not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead. Then the chief priests decided to kill Lazarus as well, since it was on his account that many of the Jews were leaving them and believing in Jesus.

Meditation
On this Monday of Holy Week, we are reminded in the Reading of the Suffering Servant of Yahweh; one who is innocent but does not want to justify his innocence. He is provoked but he does not say a word; misrepresented and blackmailed but he does not react. He knows that the truth will out; that we can never hide the truth for ever. So, he does not seek to justify himself. The humility and peaceful approach of Jesus towards his adversaries, is a lesson to most of us who, more often than not, want to make a show of our might. Might is not always the winning force; so, Jesus teaches us that we can win over others by love and peace. Love conquers everything and no prize can be put on peace. Unfortunately, we live in a world where violence and the logic of force have taken over and the human being is reduced to a brute. We have a lot to learn from the Suffering Servant of Yahweh. In our Gospel today, Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead and this attracted a lot of interest, so, the Jews who had wanted to silence Jesus, also decided that they should kill Lazarus on account of whom many were believing in the Lord. The attitude of the Jews shows a typical human feeling that makes us jealous and angry with our rival to a point where we want to destroy him and anything or person that will remind us about this rival. However, we forget that we are not always in control of all the elements of life; that God alone controls our destiny and that we may not always succeed in our evil plans. If each of us would only be satisfied with who he is and thank God for the wonder of his being, our planet would be a heaven. But as long as many people are not satisfied with themselves, they will not be happy with others either. So, problems are bound to come although we can avoid them.

Saint Marcellin, martyr
Homme marié et ami de saint Augustin, qui écrivit plusieurs ouvrages en réponse à ses questions, il fut nommé tribun par l’empereur Honorius afin qu’il aille réunifier l’Eglise en Afrique du Nord. Il y réussit assez bien jusqu’à ce qu’une révolte éclate. Malgré l’intervention de son ami, il fut exécuté.

Evangile : Jn 12, 1-11
Six jours avant la Pâque, Jésus vint à Béthanie où habitait Lazare, qu’il avait réveillé d’entre les morts. On donna un repas en l’honneur de Jésus. Marthe faisait le service, Lazare était parmi les convives avec Jésus. Or, Marie avait pris une livre d’un parfum très pur et de très grande valeur; elle répandit le parfum sur les pieds de Jésus, qu’elle essuya avec ses cheveux; la maison fut remplie de l’odeur du parfum. Judas Iscariote, l’un de ses disciples, celui qui allait le livrer, dit alors : « Pourquoi n’a-t-on pas vendu ce parfum pour trois cents pièces d’argent, que l’on aurait données à des pauvres ? » Il parla ainsi, non par souci des pauvres, mais parce que c’était un voleur: comme il tenait la bourse commune, il prenait ce que l’on y mettait. Jésus lui dit: « Laisse-la observer cet usage en vue du jour de mon ensevelissement! Des pauvres, vous en aurez toujours avec vous, mais moi, vous ne m’aurez pas toujours. » Or, une grande foule de Juifs apprit que Jésus était là, et ils arrivèrent, non seulement à cause de Jésus, mais aussi pour voir ce Lazare qu’il avait réveillé d’entre les morts. Les grands prêtres décidèrent alors de tuer aussi Lazare, parce que beaucoup de Juifs, à cause de lui, s’en allaient, et croyaient en Jésus.

- One of the Twelve, the man called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, O. What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you? N. They paid him thirty silver pieces, and from that moment he looked for an opportunity to betray him. Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, C. Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the passover? N. He replied: ✠ Go to so-and-so in the city and say to him, ‘The Master says: My time is near. It is at your house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples.’ N. The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover. When evening came he was at table with the twelve disciples. And while they were eating he said: I tell you solemnly, one of you is about to betray me. N. They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, C. Not I, Lord, surely? N. He answered, Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me will betray me. The Son of Man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born! N. Judas, who was to betray him, asked in his turn, O. Not I, Rabbi, surely? N. Jesus answered: They are your own words. N. Now as they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take it and eat; this is my body. N. Then he took a cup, and when he had returned thanks he gave it to them, saying: Drink, all of you, from this, for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, which is to be poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. From now on, I tell you, I shall not drink wine until the day I drink the new wine with you in the kingdom of my Father. N. After psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives. Then Jesus said to them, You will all lose faith in me this night, for the scripture says: I shall strike the shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered, but after my resurrection I shall go before you to Galilee. N. At this, Peter said, O. Though all lose faith in you, I will never lose faith. N. Jesus answered him, I tell you solemnly, this very night, before the cock crows, you will have disowned me three times. N. Peter said to him, O. Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you. N. And all the disciples said the same. Then Jesus came with them to a small estate called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, Stay here while I go over there to pray. N. He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And sadness came over him, and great distress. Then he said to them, My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and keep awake with me. N. And going on a little further he fell on his face and prayed: My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it. N. He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter: So you had not the strength to keep awake with me one hour? You should be awake, and praying not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. N. Again, a second time, he went away and prayed: My Father, if this cup cannot pass by without my drinking it, your will be done! N. And he came back again and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy. Leaving them there, he went away again and prayed for the third time, repeating the same words. Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, You can sleep on now and take your rest. Now the hour has come when the Son of Man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up! Let us go! My betrayer is already close at hand. N. He was still speaking when Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared, and with him a large number of men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people. Now the traitor had arranged a sign with them. He had said, O. ‘The one I kiss, he is the man. Take him in charge.’ N. So he went straight up to Jesus and said, O. Greetings, Rabbi. N. and kissed him. Jesus said to him, My friend, do what you are here for. N. Then they came forward, seized Jesus and took him in charge. At that, one of the followers of Jesus grasped his sword and drew it; he struck out at the high priest’s servant, and cut off his ear. Jesus then said, Put your sword back, for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father who would promptly send more than twelve legions of angels to my defence? But then, how would the scriptures be fulfilled that say this is the way it must be? N. It was at this time that Jesus said to the crowds, Am I a brigand, that you had to set out to capture me with swords and clubs? I sat teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid hands on me. N. Now all this happened to fulfil the prophecies in scripture. Then all the disciples deserted him and ran away. The men who had arrested Jesus led him off to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. Peter followed him at a distance, and when he reached the high priest’s palace, he went in and sat down with the attendants to see what the end would be. The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus, however false, on which they might pass the death sentence. But they could not find any, though several lying witnesses came forward. Eventually two stepped forward and made a statement, O. This man said: ‘I have power to destroy the Temple of God and in three days build it up.’ N. The high priest then stood up and said to him, O. Have you no answer to that? What is this evidence these men are bringing against you? N. But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, O. I put you on oath by the living God to tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God. N. Jesus answered: The words are your own. Moreover, I tell you that from this time onward you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven. N. At this, the high priest tore his clothes and said, O. He has blasphemed. What need of witnesses have we now? There! You have just heard the blasphemy. What is your opinion? N. They answered, C. He deserves to die. N. Then they spat in his face and hit him with their fists; others said as they struck him, C. Play the prophet, Christ! Who hit you then? N. Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him and said, O. You too were with Jesus the Galilean. N. But he denied it in front of them all, saying: O. I do not know what you are talking about. N. When he went out to the gateway another servant-girl saw him and said to the people there, O. This man was with Jesus the Nazarene. N. And again, with an oath, he denied it: O. I do not know the man. N. A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, C. You are one of them for sure! Why, your accent gives you away. Then he started calling down curses on himself and swearing: O. I do not know the man. N. At that moment the cock crew, and Peter remembered what Jesus had said, ‘Before the cock crows you will have disowned me three times.’ And he went outside and wept bitterly. When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people met in council to bring about the death of Jesus. They had him bound, and led him away to hand him over to Pilate, the governor. When he found that Jesus had been condemned, Judas his betrayer was filled with remorse and took the thirty silver pieces back to the chief priests and elders, saying: O. I have sinned. I have betrayed innocent blood. N. They replied: C. What is that to us? That is your concern. N. And flinging down the silver pieces in the sanctuary he made off and hanged himself. The chief priests picked up the silver pieces and said, C. It is against the Law to put this into the treasury: it is blood-money. N. So they discussed the matter and bought the potter’s field with it as a graveyard for foreigners, and this is why the field is called the Field of Blood today. The words of the prophet Jeremiah were then fulfilled: And they took the thirty silver pieces, the sum at which the precious One was priced by children of Israel, and they gave them for the potter’s field, just as the Lord directed me. Jesus, then, was brought before the governor, and the governor put to him this question: O. Are you the king of the Jews? N. Jesus replied, It is you who say it. N. But when he was accused by the chief priests and the elders he refused to answer at all. Pilate then said to him, O. Do you not hear how many charges they have brought against you? N. But to the governor’s complete amazement, he offered no reply to any of the charges. At festival time it was the governor’s practice to release a prisoner for the people, anyone they chose. Now there was at that time a notorious prisoner whose name was Barabbas. So when the crowd gathered, Pilate said to them, O. Which do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ? N. For Pilate knew it was out of jealousy that they had handed him over. Now as he was seated in the chair of judgement, his wife sent him a message, O. Have nothing to do with that man; I have been upset all day by a dream I had about him. N. The chief priests and the elders, however, had persuaded the crowd to demand the release of Barabbas and the execution of Jesus. So when the governor spoke and asked them, O. Which of the two do you want me to release for you? N. they said, C. Barabbas. N. Pilate said to them: O. But in that case, what am I to do with Jesus who is called Christ? N. They all said: C. Let him be crucified! N. Pilate asked: O. Why? What harm has he done? N. But they shouted all the louder, C. Let him be crucified! N. Then Pilate saw that he was making no impression, that in fact a riot was imminent. So he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd and said, O. I am innocent of this man’s blood. It is your concern. N. And the people, to a man, shouted back, C. His blood be on us and on our children! N. Then he released Barabbas for them. He ordered Jesus to be first scourged and then handed over to be crucified. The governor’s soldiers took Jesus with them into the Praetorium and collected the whole cohort round him. Then they stripped him and made him wear a scarlet cloak, and having twisted some thorns into a crown they put this on his head and placed a reed in his right hand. To make fun of him they knelt to him saying, C. Hail, king of the Jews! N. And they spat on him and took the reed and struck him on the head with it. And when they had finished making fun of him, they took off the cloak and dressed him in his own clothes and led him away to crucify him. On their way out, they came across a man from Cyrene, Simon by name, and enlisted him to carry his cross. When they had reached a place called Golgotha, that is, the place of the skull, they gave him wine to drink mixed with gall, which he tasted but refused to drink. When they had finished crucifying him they shared out his clothing by casting lots, and then sat down and stayed there keeping guard over him. Above his head was placed the charge against him; it read: ‘This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.’ At the same time two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left. The passers-by jeered at him; they shook their heads and said, C. So you would destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days! Then save yourself! If you are God’s son, come down from the cross! N. The chief priests with the scribes and elders mocked him in the same way, saying: C. He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the king of Israel; let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. He puts his trust in God; now let God rescue him if he wants him. For he did say, ‘I am the son of God.’ N. Even the robbers who were crucified with him taunted him in the same way. From the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? N. That is, ‘My God, my God, why have you deserted me?’ When some of those who stood there heard this, they said, C. The man is calling on Elijah. N. and one of them quickly ran to get a sponge which he dipped in vinegar and, putting it on a reed, gave it him to drink. The rest of them said: C. Wait! See if Elijah will come to save him. N. But Jesus, again crying out in a loud voice, yielded up his spirit. Here all kneel and pause for a short time. At that, the veil of the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom; the earth quaked; the rocks were split; the tombs opened and the bodies of many holy men rose from the dead, and these, after his resurrection, came out of the tombs, entered the Holy City and appeared to a number of people. Meanwhile the centurion, together with the others guarding Jesus, had seen the earthquake and all that was taking place, and they were terrified and said, C. In truth this was a son of God.
- And many women were there, watching from a distance, the same women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and looked after him. Among them were Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons. When it was evening, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, called Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate thereupon ordered it to be handed over. So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean shroud and put it in his own new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock. He then rolled a large stone across the entrance of the tomb and went away. Now Mary of Magdala and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the sepulchre. Next day, that is, when Preparation Day was over, the chief priests and the Pharisees went in a body to Pilate and said to him, C. Your Excellency, we recall that this impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I shall rise again.’ Therefore give the order to have the sepulchre kept secure until the third day, for fear his disciples come and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ This last piece of fraud would be worse than what went before. N. Pilate said to them: O. You may have your guard. Go and make all as secure as you know how. N. So they went and made the sepulchre secure, putting seals on the stone and mounting a guard.
Prayer over the Offerings
Through the Passion of your Only Begotten Son, O Lord, may our reconciliation with you be near at hand, so that, though we do not merit it by our own deeds, yet by this sacrifice made once for all, we may feel already the effects of your mercy. Through Christ our Lord.

Prayer after Communion
Nourished with these sacred gifts, we humbly beseech you, O Lord, that, just as through the death of your Son you have brought us to hope for what we believe, so by his Resurrection you may lead us to where you call. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
This is the beginning of Holy Week, the week within which the great events of our salvation history took place. So even those Christians who were lukewarm throughout the year, can wake up and appreciate the key moments that have made us what we are. Today is called Palm Sunday and we bless the palms and rehearse the historic and triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The people sang and praised the Son of David, whom they recognized as their King. They held palm leaves and some threw their clothes on the way to greet the incoming King. So our ceremony today begins from outside the Church and then continues with a little procession into Church to commemorate what happened in Jerusalem more than 2000 years ago. Jesus is not fooled by all the euphoria, he knows that the same people who sing his praises will equally cry for his crucifixion. So, today is also called Passion Sunday and we read the Passion Story as narrated by John. Life is a mixture of joy and sadness, ups and the downs. So, we need to learn that no condition is permanent on earth; that the first could become the last; that the same people who are friendly today could turn against you tomorrow. The human being is a fickle creature just like the crowd that welcomed Jesus to Jerusalem.
It is significant to know that the palms we shall bless today, will be the same that we shall burn on Ash Wednesday at the beginning of Lent next year, to remind us that we are dust and into dust we shall all return. The ceremonies of today are loaded with much meaning, but we are all challenged to begin a journey with Jesus Christ, crying for our sins and, repenting, so that we can share in his passion throughout this week and rise with him to new life at Easter, next Sunday.

Né à Valence en Espagne, mort à Vannes en Bretagne, ce dominicain (1350-1419) fut le prédicateur le plus populaire de son siècle. On l’appelait ‘’l’ange du jugement’’, car, pour inviter les foules à la conversion, il proclamait inlassablement l’avertissement du Christ : ‘’Soyez prêts : le Fils de l’Homme viendra à l’heure que vous ne pensez pas’’.

Chaque matin, il éveille, il éveille mon oreille pour qu’en disciple, j’écoute. Le Seigneur mon Dieu m’a ouvert l’oreille, et moi, je ne me suis pas révolté, je ne me suis pas dérobé. Deuxième lecture (Ph 2, 6-11)
Le Christ Jésus, ayant la condition de Dieu, ne retint pas jalousement le rang qui l’égalait à Dieu. Mais il s’est anéanti, prenant la condition de serviteur, devenant semblable aux hommes. Reconnu homme à son aspect, il s’est abaissé, devenant obéissant jusqu’à la mort, et la mort de la croix. C’est pourquoi Dieu l’a exalté : il l’a doté du Nom qui est au-dessus de tout nom, afin qu’au nom de Jésus tout genou fléchisse au ciel, sur terre et aux enfers, et que toute langue proclame : « Jésus Christ est Seigneur » à la gloire de Dieu le Père. – Parole du Seigneur.
Gloire et louange à toi, Seigneur Jésus. Pour nous, le Christ est devenu obéissant, jusqu’à la mort, et la mort de la croix. C’est pourquoi Dieu l’a exalté : il l’a doté du Nom qui est au-dessus de tout nom. Gloire et louange à toi, Seigneur Jésus. (cf. Ph 2, 8-9)

En ce temps-là, l’un des Douze, nommé Judas Iscariote, se rendit chez les grands prêtres et leur dit : D. « Que voulez-vous me donner, si je vous le livre ? » L. Ils lui remirent trente pièces d’argent . Et depuis, Judas cherchait une occasion favorable pour le livrer. Le premier jour de la fête des pains sans levain, les disciples s’approchèrent et dirent à Jésus : D. « Où veux-tu que nous te fassions les préparatifs pour manger la Pâque ? » L. Il leur dit : X. « Allez à la ville, chez un tel, et dites-lui : ‘Le Maître te fait dire : Mon temps est proche ; c’est chez toi que je veux célébrer la Pâque avec mes disciples.’ » L. Les disciples firent ce que Jésus leur avait prescrit et ils préparèrent la Pâque. Le soir venu, Jésus se trouvait à table avec les Douze. Pendant le repas, il déclara : X. « Amen, je vous le dis : l’un de vous va me livrer. » L. Profondément attristés, ils se mirent à lui demander, chacun son tour : D. « Serait-ce moi, Seigneur ? » L. Prenant la parole, il dit : X. « Celui qui s’est servi au plat en même temps que moi, celui-là va me livrer. Le Fils de l’homme s’en va, comme il est écrit à son sujet ; mais malheureux celui par qui le Fils de l’homme est livré ! Il vaudrait mieux pour lui qu’il ne soit pas né, cet homme-là ! » L. Pendant le repas, Jésus, ayant pris du pain et prononcé la bénédiction, le rompit et, le donnant aux disciples, il dit : X. « Prenez, mangez : ceci est mon corps. » L. Puis, ayant pris une coupe et ayant rendu grâce, il la leur donna, en disant : X. « Buvez-en tous, car ceci est mon sang, le sang de l’Alliance, versé pour la multitude en rémission des péchés. Jésus lui répondit : X. « Amen, je te le dis : cette nuit même, avant que le coq chante, tu m’auras renié trois fois. » L. Pierre lui dit : D. « Même si je dois mourir avec toi, je ne te renierai pas. » L. Et tous les disciples dirent de même. Alors Jésus parvient avec eux à un domaine appelé Gethsémani et leur dit : X. « Asseyez-vous ici, pendant que je vais là-bas pour prier. » L. Il emmena Pierre, ainsi que Jacques et Jean, les deux fils de Zébédée, et il commença à ressentir tristesse et angoisse. Il leur dit alors : X. « Mon âme est triste à en mourir. Restez ici et veillez avec moi. » L. Allant un peu plus loin, il tomba face contre terre en priant, et il disait : X. « Mon Père, s’il est possible, que cette coupe passe loin de moi ! Cependant, non pas comme moi, je veux, mais comme toi, tu veux. » L. Puis il revient vers ses disciples et les trouve endormis ; il dit à Pierre : X. « Ainsi, vous n’avez pas eu la force de veiller seulement une heure avec moi ? Veillez et priez, pour ne pas entrer en tentation ; l’esprit est ardent, mais la chair est faible. » L. De nouveau, il s’éloigna et pria, pour la deuxième fois ; il disait : X. « Mon Père, si cette coupe ne peut passer sans que je la boive, que ta volonté soit faite ! » L. Revenu près des disciples, de nouveau il les trouva endormis, car leurs yeux étaient lourds de sommeil. Les laissant, de nouveau il s’éloigna et pria pour la troisième fois, en répétant les mêmes paroles. Alors il revient vers les disciples et leur dit : X. « Désormais, vous pouvez dormir et vous reposer. Voici qu’elle est proche, l’heure où le Fils de l’homme est livré aux mains des pécheurs. Levez-vous ! Allons ! Voici qu’il est proche, celui qui me livre. » L. Jésus parlait encore, lorsque Judas, l’un des Douze, arriva, et avec lui une grande foule armée d’épées et de bâtons, envoyée par les grands prêtres et les anciens du peuple. Celui qui le livrait leur avait donné un signe : D. « Celui que j’embrasserai, c’est lui : arrêtez-le. » L. Aussitôt, s’approchant de Jésus, il lui dit : D. « Salut, Rabbi ! » L. Et il l’embrassa. Jésus lui dit : X. « Mon ami, ce que tu es venu faire, fais-le ! » L. Alors ils s’approchèrent, mirent la main sur Jésus et l’arrêtèrent. L’un de ceux qui étaient avec Jésus, portant la main à son épée, la tira, frappa le serviteur du grand prêtre, et lui trancha l’oreille. Alors Jésus lui dit : X. « Rentre ton épée, car tous ceux qui prennent l’épée périront par l’épée. Crois-tu que je ne puisse pas faire appel à mon Père ? Il mettrait aussitôt à ma disposition plus de douze légions d’anges. Mais alors, comment s’accompliraient les Écritures selon lesquelles il faut qu’il en soit ainsi ? » L. À ce moment-là, Jésus dit aux foules : X. « Suis-je donc un bandit, pour que vous soyez venus vous saisir de moi, avec des épées et des bâtons ? Chaque jour, dans le Temple, j’étais assis en train d’enseigner, et vous ne m’avez pas arrêté. » L. Mais tout cela est arrivé pour que s’accomplissent les écrits des prophètes. Alors tous les disciples l’abandonnèrent et s’enfuirent. Ceux qui avaient arrêté Jésus l’amenèrent devant Caïphe, le grand prêtre, chez qui s’étaient réunis les scribes et les anciens. Quant à Pierre, il le suivait à distance, jusqu’au palais du grand prêtre ; il entra dans la cour et s’assit avec les serviteurs pour voir comment cela finirait. Les grands prêtres et tout le Conseil suprême cherchaient un faux témoignage contre Jésus pour le faire mettre à mort. Ils n’en trouvèrent pas ; pourtant beaucoup de faux témoins s’étaient présentés. Finalement il s’en présenta deux, qui déclarèrent : A. « Celui-là a dit : ‘Je peux détruire le Sanctuaire de Dieu et, en trois jours, le rebâtir.’ » L. Alors le grand prêtre se leva et lui dit : A. « Tu ne réponds rien ? Que dis-tu des témoignages qu’ils portent contre toi ? » L. Mais Jésus gardait le silence. Le grand prêtre lui dit : A. « Je t’adjure, par le Dieu vivant, de nous dire si c’est toi qui es le Christ, le Fils de Dieu. » L. Jésus lui répond : X. « C’est toi-même qui l’as dit ! Qui t’a frappé ? » L. Cependant Pierre était assis dehors dans la cour. Une jeune servante s’approcha de lui et lui dit : A. « Toi aussi, tu étais avec Jésus, le Galiléen ! » L. Mais il le nia devant tout le monde et dit : D. « Je ne sais pas de quoi tu parles. » L. Une autre servante le vit sortir en direction du portail et elle dit à ceux qui étaient là : A. « Celui-ci était avec Jésus, le Nazaréen. » L. De nouveau, Pierre le nia en faisant ce serment : D. « Je ne connais pas cet homme. » L. Peu après, ceux qui se tenaient là s’approchèrent et dirent à Pierre : A. « Sûrement, toi aussi, tu es l’un d’entre eux ! D’ailleurs, ta façon de parler te trahit. » L. Alors, il se mit à protester violemment et à jurer : D. « Je ne connais pas cet homme. » L. Et aussitôt un coq chanta. Alors Pierre se souvint de la parole que Jésus lui avait dite : « Avant que le coq chante, tu m’auras renié trois fois. » Il sortit et, dehors, pleura amèrement. Le matin venu, tous les grands prêtres et les anciens du peuple tinrent conseil contre Jésus pour le faire mettre à mort. Après l’avoir ligoté, ils l’emmenèrent et le livrèrent à Pilate, le gouverneur. Alors, en voyant que Jésus était condamné, Judas, qui l’avait livré, fut pris de remords ; il rendit les trente pièces d’argent aux grands prêtres et aux anciens. Il leur dit : D. « J’ai péché en livrant à la mort un innocent. » L. Ils répliquèrent : A. « Que nous importe ? Cela te regarde ! » L. Jetant alors les pièces d’argent dans le Temple, il se retira et alla se pendre. Les grands prêtres ramassèrent l’argent et dirent : A. « Il n’est pas permis de le verser dans le trésor, puisque c’est le prix du sang. » Après avoir tenu conseil, ils achetèrent avec cette somme le champ du potier pour y enterrer les étrangers. Voilà pourquoi ce champ est appelé jusqu’à ce jour le Champ-du-Sang. Alors fut accomplie la parole prononcée par le prophète Jérémie : Ils ramassèrent les trente pièces d’argent, le prix de celui qui fut mis à prix, le prix fixé par les fils d’Israël, et ils les donnèrent pour le champ du potier, comme le Seigneur me l’avait ordonné. L. On fit comparaître Jésus devant Pilate, le gouverneur, qui l’interrogea : A. « Es-tu le roi des Juifs ? » L. Jésus déclara : X. « C’est toi-même qui le dis. » L. Mais, tandis que les grands prêtres et les anciens l’accusaient, il ne répondit rien. Alors Pilate lui dit : A. « Tu n’entends pas tous les témoignages portés contre toi ? » L. Mais Jésus ne lui répondit plus un mot, si bien que le gouverneur fut très étonné. Or, à chaque fête, celui-ci avait coutume de relâcher un prisonnier, celui que la foule demandait. Il y avait alors un prisonnier bien connu, nommé Barabbas. Les foules s’étant donc rassemblées, Pilate leur dit : A. « Qui voulez-vous que je vous relâche : Barabbas ? ou Jésus, appelé le Christ ? » L. Il savait en effet que c’était par jalousie qu’on avait livré Jésus. Tandis qu’il siégeait au tribunal, sa femme lui fit dire : A. « Ne te mêle pas de l’affaire de ce juste, car aujourd’hui j’ai beaucoup souffert en songe à cause de lui. » L. Les grands prêtres et les anciens poussèrent les foules à réclamer Barabbas et à faire périr Jésus. Le gouverneur reprit : A. « Lequel des deux voulez-vous que je vous relâche ? » L. Ils répondirent : F. « Barabbas ! » L. Pilate leur dit : A. « Que ferai-je donc de Jésus appelé le Christ ? » L. Ils répondirent tous : F. « Qu’il soit crucifié ! » L. Pilate demanda : A. « Quel mal a-t-il donc fait ? » L. Ils criaient encore plus fort : F. « Qu’il soit crucifié ! » L. Pilate, voyant que ses efforts ne servaient à rien, sinon à augmenter le tumulte, prit de l’eau et se lava les mains devant la foule, en disant : A. « Je suis innocent du sang de cet homme : cela vous regarde ! » L. Tout le peuple répondit : F. « Son sang, qu’il soit sur nous et sur nos enfants ! » L. Alors, il leur relâcha Barabbas ; quant à Jésus, il le fit flageller, et il le livra pour qu’il soit crucifié. Alors les soldats du gouverneur emmenèrent Jésus dans la salle du Prétoire et rassemblèrent autour de lui toute la garde. Ils lui enlevèrent ses vêtements et le couvrirent d’un manteau rouge. Puis, avec des épines, ils tressèrent une couronne, et la posèrent sur sa tête ; ils lui mirent un roseau dans la main droite et, pour se moquer de lui, ils s’agenouillaient devant lui en disant : F. « Salut, roi des Juifs ! » L. Et, après avoir craché sur lui, ils prirent le roseau, et ils le frappaient à la tête. Quand ils se furent bien moqués de lui, ils lui enlevèrent le manteau, lui remirent ses vêtements, et l’emmenèrent pour le crucifier. En sortant, ils trouvèrent un nommé Simon, originaire de Cyrène, et ils le réquisitionnèrent pour porter la croix de Jésus. Arrivés en un lieu dit Golgotha, c’est-à-dire : Lieu-du-Crâne (ou Calvaire), ils donnèrent à boire à Jésus du vin mêlé de fiel ; il en goûta, mais ne voulut pas boire. Après l’avoir crucifié, ils se partagèrent ses vêtements en tirant au sort ; et ils restaient là, assis, à le garder. Au-dessus de sa tête ils placèrent une inscription indiquant le motif de sa condamnation : « Celui-ci est Jésus, le roi des Juifs. » Alors on crucifia avec lui deux bandits, l’un à droite et l’autre à gauche. Les passants l’injuriaient en hochant la tête ; ils disaient : F. « Toi qui détruis le Sanctuaire et le rebâtis en trois jours, sauve-toi toi-même, si tu es Fils de Dieu, et descends de la croix ! » L. De même, les grands prêtres se moquaient de lui avec les scribes et les anciens, en disant : A. « Il en a sauvé d’autres, et il ne peut pas se sauver lui-même ! Il est roi d’Israël : qu’il descende maintenant de la croix, et nous croirons en lui ! Il a mis sa confiance en Dieu. Que Dieu le délivre maintenant, s’il l’aime ! Car il a dit : ‘Je suis Fils de Dieu.’ » L. Les bandits crucifiés avec lui l’insultaient de la même manière. À partir de la sixième heure (c’est-à-dire : midi), l’obscurité se fit sur toute la terre jusqu’à la neuvième heure. Vers la neuvième heure, Jésus cria d’une voix forte : X. « Éli, Éli, lema sabactani ? », L. ce qui veut dire : X. « Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m’as-tu abandonné ? » L. L’ayant entendu, quelques-uns de ceux qui étaient là disaient : F. « Le voilà qui appelle le prophète Élie ! » L. Aussitôt l’un d’eux courut prendre une éponge qu’il trempa dans une boisson vinaigrée ; il la mit au bout d’un roseau, et il lui donnait à boire. Les autres disaient : F. « Attends ! Nous verrons bien si Élie vient le sauver. » L. Mais Jésus, poussant de nouveau un grand cri, rendit l’esprit (Ici on fléchit le genou et on s’arrête un instant) Et voici que le rideau du Sanctuaire se déchira en deux, depuis le haut jusqu’en bas ; la terre trembla et les rochers se fendirent. Les tombeaux s’ouvrirent ; les corps de nombreux saints qui étaient morts ressuscitèrent, et, sortant des tombeaux après la résurrection de Jésus, ils entrèrent dans la Ville sainte, et se montrèrent à un grand nombre de gens. À la vue du tremblement de terre et de ces événements, le centurion et ceux qui, avec lui, gardaient Jésus, furent saisis d’une grande crainte et dirent : A. « Vraiment, celui-ci était Fils de Dieu ! » L. Il y avait là de nombreuses femmes qui observaient de loin. Elles avaient suivi Jésus depuis la Galilée pour le servir. Parmi elles se trouvaient Marie Madeleine, Marie, mère de Jacques et de Joseph, et la mère des fils de Zébédée. Comme il se faisait tard, arriva un homme riche, originaire d’Arimathie, qui s’appelait Joseph, et qui était devenu, lui aussi, disciple de Jésus. Il alla trouver Pilate pour demander le corps de Jésus. Alors Pilate ordonna qu’on le lui remette. Prenant le corps, Joseph l’enveloppa dans un linceul immaculé, et le déposa dans le tombeau neuf qu’il s’était fait creuser dans le roc. Puis il roula une grande pierre à l’entrée du tombeau et s’en alla. Or Marie Madeleine et l’autre Marie étaient là, assises en face du sépulcre. Le lendemain, après le jour de la Préparation, les grands prêtres et les pharisiens s’assemblèrent chez Pilate, en disant : A. « Seigneur, nous nous sommes rappelé que cet imposteur a dit, de son vivant : ‘Trois jours après, je ressusciterai.’ Alors, donne l’ordre que le sépulcre soit surveillé jusqu’au troisième jour, de peur que ses disciples ne viennent voler le corps et ne disent au peuple : ‘Il est ressuscité d’entre les morts.’ Cette dernière imposture serait pire que la première. » L. Saint Isidore de Séville, évêque et docteur de l’Eglise
Orphelin et d’abord rétif à l’étude, Isidore (vers 560-636) apprit de son frère Léandre, évêque de Séville, à mettre en valeur ses dons. Aussi, devenu successeur de Léandre à Séville en 601, put-il accomplir une œuvre considérable dans tous les domaines : il acheva de ramener les Wisigoths au catholicisme, présida les conciles qui donnèrent à l’Espagne son organisation et fut le promoteur de la liturgie mozarabe. Ses écrits, compilation de toutes les connaissances de son temps, firent de lui l’un des maîtres du moyen âge latin.

En ce temps-là, quand Lazare fut sorti du tombeau, beaucoup de Juifs, qui étaient venus auprès de Marie et avaient donc vu ce que Jésus avait fait, crurent en lui. Mais quelques-uns allèrent trouver les pharisiens pour leur raconter ce qu’il avait fait. Les grands prêtres et les pharisiens réunirent donc le Conseil suprême; ils disaient: « Qu’allons-nous faire? Cet homme accomplit un grand nombre de signes. Si nous le laissons faire, tout le monde va croire en lui, et les Romains viendront détruire notre Lieu saint et notre nation. » Alors, l’un d’entre eux, Caïphe, qui était grand prêtre cette année-là, leur dit: « Vous n’y comprenez rien vous ne voyez pas quel est votre intérêt: il vaut mieux qu’un seul homme meure pour le peuple, et que l’ensemble de la nation ne périsse pas. » Ce qu’il disait là ne venait pas de lui-même; mais, étant grand prêtre cette année-là, il prophétisa que Jésus allait mourir pour la nation; et ce n’était pas seulement pour la nation, c’était afin de rassembler dans l’unité les enfants de Dieu dispersés. À partir de ce jour-là, ils décidèrent de le tuer. C’est pourquoi Jésus ne se déplaçait plus ouvertement parmi les Juifs ; il partit pour la région proche du désert, dans la ville d’Éphraïm où il séjourna avec ses disciples. Or, la Pâque juive était proche, et beaucoup montèrent de la campagne à Jérusalem pour se purifier avant la Pâque. Ils cherchaient Jésus et, dans le Temple, ils se disaient entre eux : Qu’en pensez-vous ? Il ne viendra sûrement pas à la fête ! » Les grands prêtres et les pharisiens avaient donné des ordres : quiconque saurait où il était devait le dénoncer, pour qu’on puisse l’arrêter.
