Saint Gabin de Rome
Vert
Selon une version, frère du Pape saint Caïus et père de sainte Suzanne, il fut longtemps détenu en prison et y mourut pour la foi sous l’empereur Dioclétien. Une autre version fait de lui un prêtre romain qui ne connut pas le martyre, mais qui eut un renom de sainteté parce qu’il fut enterré dans la basilique de sainte Suzanne à Rome, honneur qui lui valut en même temps d’entrer dans le martyrologe.

Seigneur, sois le rocher qui m’abrite, la maison bien défendue qui me sauve. Pour l’honneur de ton nom guide-moi, conduis-moi.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui veux habiter les cœurs droits et sincères, donne-nous de vivre selon ta grâce, alors tu pourras venir en nous pour y faire ta demeure. Par Jésus Christ.
Première lecture (Jc 1, 19-27)
Sachez-le, mes frères bien- aimés : chacun doit être prompt à écouter, lent à parler, lent à la colère, car la colère de l’homme ne réalise pas ce qui est juste selon Dieu. C’est pourquoi, ayant rejeté tout ce qui est sordide et tout débordement de méchanceté, accueillez dans la douceur la Parole semée en vous ; c’est elle qui peut sauver vos âmes. Mettez la Parole en pratique, ne vous contentez pas de l’écouter : ce serait vous faire illusion. Car si quelqu’un écoute la Parole sans la mettre en pratique, il est comparable à un homme qui observe dans un miroir son visage tel qu’il est, et qui, aussitôt après, s’en va en oubliant comment il était. Au contraire, celui qui se penche sur la loi parfaite, celle de la liberté, et qui s’y tient, lui qui l’écoute non pour l’oublier, mais pour la mettre en pratique dans ses actes, celui-là sera heureux d’agir ainsi. Si l’on pense être quelqu’un de religieux sans mettre un frein à sa langue, on se trompe soi- même, une telle religion est sans valeur. Devant Dieu notre Père, un comportement religieux pur et sans souillure, c’est de visiter les orphelins et les veuves dans leur détresse, et de se garder sans tache au milieu du monde.
Psaume 14 (15), 2-3a, 3bc- 4ab, 4d-5
R/ Seigneur, qui habitera ta sainte montagne ?
- Celui qui se conduit parfaitement, qui agit avec justice et dit la vérité selon son cœur. Il met un frein à sa langue.
- Il ne fait pas de tort à son frère et n’outrage pas son prochain. À ses yeux, le réprouvé est méprisable mais il honore les fidèles du Seigneur.
- Il ne reprend pas sa parole. Il prête son argent sans intérêt, n’accepte rien qui nuise à l’innocent. Qui fait ainsi demeure inébranlable.
Acclamation
Alléluia. Alléluia. Que le Père de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ ouvre à sa lumière les yeux de notre cœur, pour que nous percevions l’espérance que donne son appel. Alléluia. (cf. Ep 1, 17-18)
Évangile (Mc 8, 22-26)
En ce temps-là, Jésus et ses disciples arrivèrent à Bethsaïde. Des gens lui amènent un aveugle et le supplient de le toucher. Jésus prit l’aveugle par la main et le conduisit hors du village. Il lui mit de la salive sur les yeux et lui imposa les mains. Il lui demandait: « Aperçois-tu quelque chose ? » Levant les yeux, l’homme disait : « J’aperçois les gens : ils ressemblent à des arbres que je vois marcher. » Puis Jésus, de nouveau, imposa les mains sur les yeux de l’homme ; celui-ci se mit à voir normalement, il se trouva guéri, et il distinguait tout avec netteté. Jésus le renvoya dans sa maison en disant : « Ne rentre même pas dans le village. »

Que cette eucharistie, Seigneur notre Dieu, nous purifie et nous renouvelle ; Qu’elle donne à ceux qui font ta volonté le bonheur que tu leur as promis. Par Jésus.

Le Seigneur combla le désir de son peuple: ils mangèrent et ils furent rassasiés, leur attente ne fut pas trompée.

Tu nous as donné, Seigneur, de goûter aux joies du ciel: Fais que nous ayons toujours soif des sources de la vraie vie. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Voici un miracle particulier que Jésus opère dans cet Evangile. Il ne guérit pas l’aveugle publiquement mais en aparté, hors du village. Jésus veut être seul avec l’aveugle. Par ailleurs il ne se contente pas de dire « sois guéri » comme dans d’autres miracles, il prend de la salive et prie en lui imposant les mains ; et l’aveugle recouvre la vue. Cette guérison n’est pas seulement celle des yeux, mais aussi celle du cœur, du profond de l’être et c’est pour cela que Jésus lui dit : « ne rentre même pas dans le village. » Il faut comprendre par ici, « reste à part, dans cette intimité divine, ne te dissipe pas en bavardage avec les autres villageois». Cela doit nous interpeller dans la façon dont nous recevons les grâces du Seigneur. Savons-nous rester recueillis en nous-mêmes pour rendre grâce à Dieu pour sa bonté.

Bl. Alvarez of Corova
Alvarez entered the Dominican convent at Cordova in 1368. He became known for his preaching prowess in Spain and Italy. By the time of his death, he was famous all over Spain for his teaching, preaching, asceticism, and holiness. His cult was confirmed in 1741.

Meditation
Saint James advises us in the first reading of today: “Be quick to listen but slow to speak and slow to rouse your temper; God’s righteousness is never served by man’s anger; so do away with all the impurities and bad habits that are still left in you – accept and submit to the word which has been planted in you and can save your souls”. How often have we wished we were in God’s position so as to destroy one person or another, who has caused us one harm or another? Saint James reminds us that those who are close to God act Godly. We need to keep watch over our thoughts, speech and action, for we are called to be God’s children that He loves.

St. Simon
In St. Matthew’s Gospel, we read of St. Simon who is described as one of our Lord’s brethren or kinsmen. He is one of those brethren of Christ who are mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as having received the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.

Meditation
In the first reading, Saint James says, “Happy the man who stands firm when trials come. He has proved himself, and will win the prize of life, the crown that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” Of course, God invites each one of us to know Him, love Him, and serve Him here on earth so as to be happy with Him for ever in heaven. When we choose to be close to God, even trials cannot break us, for nothing is stronger than God Himself. When we choose to drift away from God, we become authors of our own downfall, as Saint James tells us: “Everyone who is tempted is attracted and seduced by his own wrong desire. Then the desire conceives and gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it too has a child, and the child is death.”

Pauvre et torturée par l’asthme, Bernadette (1844-1879) a quatorze ans quand, dans la grotte de Massabielle, à Lourdes, lui apparaît dix-huit fois celle qui se nommera : ‘’l’Immaculée Conception’’. ‘’ Si la sainte Vierge en avait trouvé une plus ignorante que moi, c’est elle qu’elle aurait choisi’’, dira Bernadette, devenue Sœur Marie Bernard en 1866 chez les Sœurs de la Charité de Nevers. Ce mot dit bien l’humilité de celle qui accepta inlassablement souffrances et humiliations pour le salut des pécheurs.

Heureux l’homme qui supporte l’épreuve avec persévérance, car, sa valeur une fois vérifiée, il recevra la couronne de la vie promise à ceux qui aiment Dieu. Dans l’épreuve de la tentation, que personne ne dise: « Ma tentation vient de Dieu. » Dieu, en effet, ne peut être tenté de faire le mal, et lui-même ne tente personne. Chacun est tenté par sa propre convoitise qui l’entraîne et le séduit. Puis la convoitise conçoit et enfante le péché, et le péché, arrivé à son terme, engendre la mort. Jésus s’en rend compte et leur dit: « Pourquoi discutez-vous sur ce manque de pains ? Vous ne saisissez pas ? Vous ne comprenez pas encore ? Vous avez le cœur endurci ? Vous avez des yeux et vous ne voyez pas, vous avez des oreilles et vous n’entendez pas ! Vous ne vous rappelez pas? Quand j’ai rompu les cinq pains pour cinq mille personnes, combien avez-vous ramassé de paniers pleins de morceaux ? » Ils lui répondirent : « Douze. – Et quand j’en ai rompu sept pour quatre mille, combien avez-vous rempli de corbeilles en ramassant les morceaux ? » Ils lui répondirent : « Sept. » Il leur disait: « Vous ne comprenez pas encore ?»

Méditation
Voici qu’une nouvelle fois, dans la barque avec ses apôtres, Jésus vient de quitter les pharisiens qui demandaient des signes venant du ciel. Mais dans cette barque, les apôtres s’inquiètent d’une seule chose : ils ont oublié le pain. Et même quand Jésus leur parle, ils ne l’entendent pas, ils sont obnubilés par ce pain qui manque. Il va alors les interpeller vivement, leur permettre de voir plus loin que tous les signes qu’il a donnés. Avoir des moyens de subsistance est important. Mais, ensemble avec les apôtres, Jésus nous interpelle. Dans les moments de famine, de désespoir, de doutes et tribulations, il est là au milieu de nous, dans l’Eucharistie, et il vaut mille fois mieux que nos pains. Le pain qu’il nous offre, c’est lui-même et c’est pour la vie éternelle ; et non pas le pain de cette terre.

In the thirteenth century seven Florentines founded the Servite order. Their feast is celebrated today because one of the seven founders, Saint Alexius Falconieri, died on 17 February 1310

If there is any one of you who needs wisdom, he must ask God, who gives to all freely and ungrudgingly; it will be given to him. But he must ask with faith, and no trace of doubt, because a person who has doubts is like the waves thrown up in the sea when the wind drives. That sort of person, in two minds, wavering between going different ways, must not expect that the Lord will give him anything. It is right for the poor brother to be proud of his high rank, and the rich one to be thankful that he has been humbled, because riches last no longer than the flowers in the grass; the scorching sun comes up, and the grass withers, the flower falls; what looked so beautiful now disappears. It is the same with the rich man: his business goes on; he himself perishes.

Meditation
As brief as the Gospel passage of today is, it presents a deep concern and somewhat downright disappointment on the part of Jesus. Jesus is disappointed with the generation that fails to recognise him and is only interested in external signs and miracles. Of course, miracles come from faith and not vice-versa. It would be interesting if we substituted ‘this generation’ in the Gospel passage with ‘you’, meaning you and I. How much faith do we have in Jesus? Is he our Alpha and Omega? Do we turn to him in joy and sorrow, in season and out of season? If we do not have Jesus as the Guiding Principle of our life, we need to rethink the purpose of our existence.

Les sept saints fondateurs des Servites de Marie

Vers 1233, sept marchands florentins renoncent à leur commerce et à leurs gains pour mener une autre recherche dans la solitude du Mont Senario. Ils vivent en communauté dans la pénitence et méditent la passion de Jésus et les douleurs de sa mère. Ainsi prend naissance l’ordre des « servites » ou « serviteurs de Marie », voué à la prédication et à l’enseignement.

Jacques, serviteur de Dieu et du Seigneur Jésus Christ, aux douze tribus de la Diaspora, salut! Considérez comme une joie extrême, mes frères, de buter sur toute sorte d’épreuves. Vous le savez, une telle vérification de votre foi produit l’endurance, et l’endurance doit s’accompagner d’une action parfaite, pour que vous soyez parfaits et intègres, sans que rien ne vous manque. Mais si l’un de vous manque de sagesse, qu’il la demande à Dieu, lui qui donne à tous sans réserve et sans faire de reproches : elle lui sera donnée. Mais qu’il demande avec foi, sans la moindre hésitation, car celui qui hésite ressemble aux vagues de la mer que le vent agite et soulève. Qu’il ne s’imagine pas, cet homme-là, qu’il recevra du Seigneur quoi que ce soit, s’il est partagé, instable dans toute sa conduite. Que le frère d’humble condition tire sa fierté d’être élevé, et le riche, d’être humilié, car il passera comme l’herbe en fleur. En effet, le soleil s’est levé, ainsi que le vent brûlant, il a desséché l’herbe, sa fleur est tombée, la beauté de son aspect a disparu; de même, le riche se flétrira dans toutes ses entreprises.

Méditation
L’Évangile nous présente l’hostilité des Pharisiens envers Jésus. Ils le mettront désormais à l’épreuve, Ils chercheront à découvrir ses faiblesses afin de pouvoir l’éliminer. Rien de ce qu’il fait ne les satisfait parce que leurs cœurs sont fermés. Dieu nous teste souvent mais c’est pour faire ressortir le meilleur en nous, intensifier notre foi et notre amour. Et Dieu ne permet jamais à ses fils d’agir comme les Pharisiens, de tester les autres avec le but de les nuire. Dieu sait combien nous aimerions parfois avoir un signe ; mais il nous a entouré de signes multiples. Prenons-nous souvent le temps de remarquer les merveilles que Dieu opère dans nos vies ?

Lecture du livre de Ben Sira le Sage
Si tu le veux, tu peux observer les commandements, il dépend de ton choix de rester fidèle. Le Seigneur a mis devant toi l’eau et le feu : étends la main vers ce que tu préfères. La vie et la mort sont proposées aux hommes, l’une ou l’autre leur est donnée selon leur choix. Car la sagesse du Seigneur est grande, fort est son pouvoir, et il voit tout. Ses regards sont tournés vers ceux qui le craignent, il connaît toutes les actions des hommes. Il n’a commandé à personne d’être impie, il n’a donné à personne la permission de pécher.

Deuxième lecture: 1 Co 2, 6-10
Lecture de la première lettre de saint Paul apôtre aux Corinthiens
Frères, c’est bien de sagesse que nous parlons devant ceux qui sont adultes dans la foi, mais ce n’est pas la sagesse de ce monde, la sagesse de ceux qui dirigent ce monde et qui vont à leur destruction. Au contraire, ce dont nous parlons, c’est de la sagesse du mystère de Dieu, sagesse tenue cachée, établie par lui dès avant les siècles, pour nous donner la gloire. Aucun de ceux qui dirigent ce monde ne l’a connue, car, s’ils l’avaient connue, ils n’auraient jamais crucifié le Seigneur de gloire. Mais ce que nous proclamons, c’est, comme dit l’Écriture : ce que l’œil n’a pas vu, ce que l’oreille n’a pas entendu, ce qui n’est pas venu à l’esprit de l’homme, ce que Dieu a préparé pour ceux dont il est aimé. Et c’est à nous que Dieu, par l’Esprit, en a fait la révélation. Car l’Esprit scrute le fond de toutes choses, même les profondeurs de Dieu.

Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit aux anciens : Tu ne commettras pas de meurtre, et si quelqu’un commet un meurtre, il devra passer en jugement. Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis : Tout homme qui se met en colère contre son frère devra passer en jugement. Vous avez appris qu’il a été dit : Tu ne commettras pas d’adultère. Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis : Tout homme qui regarde une femme avec convoitise a déjà commis l’adultère avec elle dans son cœur. Vous avez encore appris qu’il a été dit aux anciens : Tu ne manqueras pas à tes serments, mais tu t’acquitteras de tes serments envers le Seigneur. Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis de ne pas jurer du tout. Que votre parole soit ‘oui’, si c’est ‘oui’, ‘non’, si c’est ‘non’. Ce qui est en plus vient du Mauvais.

Méditation
Nous vivons actuellement dans un monde où les valeurs sont inversées, où on nous enseigne même que le bien est mal et que le mal est bien, cela sous couvert de droits, de liberté… Mais nous devons comprendre que le monde n’est pas obligatoirement chrétien. Aucune nationalité ne fait de nous un chrétien. On est chrétien quand on accepte Jésus Christ dans sa vie, comme seigneur et sauveur, et quand on vit selon sa parole. L’Évangile nous envoi ici non pas aux normes de la société, mais bien aux normes de vérité de notre cœur et de notre propre conduite. Jésus nous invite dans cet Évangile à aller au-delà du minimum que peut vivre tout fidèle et à rechercher de la sainteté.

Second reading: 1 Corinthians 2:6-10
We have a wisdom to offer those who have reached maturity: not a philosophy of our age, it is true, still less of the masters of our age, which are coming to their end. The hidden wisdom of God which we teach in our mysteries is the wisdom that God predestined to be for our glory before the ages began. It is a wisdom that none of the masters of this age have ever known, or they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory; we teach what scripture calls: the things that no eye has seen and no ear has heard, things beyond the mind of man, all that God has prepared for those who love him. These are the very things that God has revealed to us through the Spirit, for the Spirit reaches the depths of everything, even the depths of God.

Gospel : Matthew 5: 17-37
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Do not imagine that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete them. I tell you solemnly, till heaven and earth disappear, not one dot, not one little stroke, shall disappear from the Law until its purpose is achieved. Therefore, the man who infringes even one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be considered the least in the kingdom of heaven; but the man who keeps them and teaches them will be considered great in the kingdom of heaven. ‘For I tell you, if your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven. ‘You have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not kill; and if anyone does kill he must answer for it before the court. But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court; if a man calls his brother “Fool” he will answer for it before the Sanhedrin; and if a man calls him “Renegade” he will answer for it in hell fire. So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering. But I say this to you: if a man looks at a woman lustfully, he has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye should cause you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; for it will do you less harm to lose one part of you than to have your whole body thrown into hell. And if your right hand should cause you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; for it will do you less harm to lose one part of you than to have your whole body go to hell. ‘It has also been said: Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a writ of dismissal. But I say this to you: everyone who divorces his wife, except for the case of fornication, makes her an adulteress; and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. ‘Again, you have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not break your oath, but must fulfil your oaths to the Lord. May this oblation, O Lord, we pray, cleanse and renew us and may it become for those who do your will the source of eternal reward. Through Christ our Lord.

They ate and had their fill, and what they craved the Lord gave them; they were not disappointed in what they craved.

Having fed upon these heavenly delights, we pray, O Lord, so that we may always long for that food by which we truly live. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
For many people, the law is a burden, a hindrance, an obstacle. Instead of seeing the law as an ordinance of right reason that regulates the behaviour of human beings and their relationship with one another, with their environment, and with their God, many simply see it as a heavy yoke placed on their shoulders to prohibit their freedom and enjoyment. To such people, for Jesus to be their Saviour, he should simply liberate them from the ugly claws of the law. Instead, Jesus declares that he has not come to abolish the law but to complete it and he goes on to give further implications of the law, which seem to make everyone guilty of breaking the law. The declaration of Jesus points to the fact that there are no half measures when it comes respecting God and His Commandments. We are either entirely for God or against Him!

Jésuite, ce confesseur de sainte Marguerite-Marie Alacoque à Paray-le-Monial est convaincu de l’authenticité des apparitions et des confidences dont elle est l’objet, et il en rédige le récit. Après un séjour en Grande-Bretagne au cours duquel, jeté en prison lors de la vague de persécutions anticatholiques de 1678, il perd la santé, il revient à Paray-le-Monial d’où il est rappelé à Dieu.

1ère lecture : 1 R 12, 26-32 ; 13, 33-34
En ces jours-là, devenu roi des dix tribus d’Israël, Jéroboam se dit: « Maintenant, le royaume risque fort de se rallier de nouveau à la maison de David. Si le peuple continue de monter à Jérusalem pour offrir des sacrifices dans la maison du Seigneur, le cœur de ce peuple reviendra vers son souverain, Roboam, roi de Juda, et l’on me tuera. » Après avoir tenu conseil, Jéroboam fit fabriquer deux veaux en or, et il déclara au peuple: « Voilà trop longtemps que vous montez à Jérusalem! Israël, voici tes dieux, qui t’ont fait monter du pays d’Égypte.» Il plaça l’un des deux veaux à Béthel, l’autre à Dane, et ce fut un grand péché. Le peuple conduisit en procession celui qui allait à Dane. Jéroboam y établit un temple à la manière des lieux sacrés. Il institua des prêtres pris n’importe où, et qui n’étaient pas des descendants de Lévi. Jéroboam célébra la fête le quinzième jour du huitième mois, fête pareille à celle que l’on célébrait en Juda, et il monta à l’autel. Il fit de même à Béthel en offrant des sacrifices aux veaux qu’il avait fabriqués; il établit à Béthel les prêtres des lieux sacrés qu’il avait institués. Jéroboam persévéra dans sa mauvaise conduite; il continua d’instituer n’importe qui comme prêtres des lieux sacrés: il donnait l’investiture à tous ceux qui le désiraient, pour en faire des prêtres des lieux sacrés. Tout cela fit tomber dans le péché la maison de Jéroboam, entraîna sa ruine et provoqua sa disparition de la surface de la terre.
Psaume : 105 (106), 6-7ab, 19-20, 21-22
R/ Souviens-toi de nous, Seigneur, dans ta bienveillance pour ton peuple.
- Avec nos pères, nous avons péché, nous avons failli et renié. En Égypte, nos pères ont méconnu tes miracles, oublié l’abondance de tes grâces.
- À l’Horeb ils fabriquent un veau, ils adorent un objet en métal: ils échangeaient ce qui était leur gloire pour l’image d’un taureau, d’un ruminant.
- Ils oublient le Dieu qui les sauve, qui a fait des prodiges en Égypte, des miracles au pays de Cham, des actions terrifiantes sur la mer Rouge.

Évangile : Mc 8, 1-10
En ces jours-là, comme il y avait de nouveau une grande foule, et que les gens n’avaient rien à manger, Jésus appelle à lui ses disciples et leur dit: « J’ai de la compassion pour cette foule, car depuis trois jours déjà ils restent auprès de moi, et n’ont rien à manger. Si je les renvoie chez eux à jeun, ils vont défaillir en chemin, et certains d’entre eux sont venus de loin. » Ses disciples lui répondirent : « Où donc pourra-t-on trouver du pain pour les rassasier ici, dans le désert ? » Il leur demanda : « Combien de pains avez-vous ? » Ils lui dirent: « Sept. » Alors il ordonna à la foule de s’asseoir par terre. Puis, prenant les sept pains et rendant grâce, il les rompit, et il les donnait à ses disciples pour que ceux-ci les distribuent ; et ils les distribuèrent à la foule. Ils avaient aussi quelques petits poissons, que Jésus bénit et fit aussi distribuer. Les gens mangèrent et furent rassasiés. On ramassa les morceaux qui restaient : cela faisait sept corbeilles. Or, ils étaient environ quatre mille. Puis Jésus les renvoya. Aussitôt, montant dans la barque avec ses disciples, il alla dans la région de Dalmanoutha.

Seigneur notre Dieu, tu as voulu choisir dans ta création le pain et le vin qui refont chaque jour nos forces: Fais qu’ils deviennent aussi pour nous le sacrement de la vie éternelle. Par Jésus.

Proclamons l’amour du Seigneur, ses merveilles pour les hommes: Il a rassasié ceux qui avaient faim, et désaltéré ceux qui avaient soif.

Tu as voulu, Seigneur, que nous partagions un même pain et que nous buvions à la même coupe: Accorde-nous de vivre tellement unis dans le Christ que nous portions du fruit pour le salut du monde. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Jésus connait la faim de ceux qui le suivent, il en a pitié mais il ne veut pas agir « tout seul », il associe les apôtres à son œuvre. 7 pains reçus des Apôtres, Jésus va agir à partir de ce petit rien partagé et offert. Aujourd’hui, avec les troubles, la crise, la méchanceté de l’homme, l’égoïsme, … on n’a pas de quoi manger. Et Jésus nous demande, simplement, combien de pains nous avons ? Peu importe le nombre. Offrons-lui nos prières : c’est déjà un pain. Donnons-lui nos Eucharisties : c’est aussi un pain. Donnons-lui nos décisions de nous réconcilier avec les autres : c’est un autre pain. Donnons-lui nos sacrifices, jeûnes, solidarités, amours, et tout ce qu’il nous demande : c’est le vrai pain à offrir au Seigneur et à nos prochains.

First reading: 1 Kings 12:26-32,13:33-34
Jeroboam thought to himself, ‘As things are, the kingdom will revert to the House of David. If this people continues to go up to the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem to offer sacrifices, the people’s heart will turn back again to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will put me to death.’ So the king thought this over and then made two golden calves; he said to the people, ‘You have been going up to Jerusalem long enough. Here are your gods, Israel; these brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’ He set up one in Bethel and the people went in procession all the way to Dan in front of the other. He set up the temple of the high places and appointed priests from ordinary families, who were not of the sons of Levi. Jeroboam also instituted a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth of the month, like the feast that was kept in Judah, and he went up to the altar. That was how he behaved in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made; and at Bethel he put the priests of the high places he had established. Jeroboam did not give up his wicked ways but went on appointing priests for the high places from the common people. He consecrated as priests of the high places any who wished to be. Such conduct made the House of Jeroboam a sinful House, and caused its ruin and extinction from the face of the earth.

R/ O Lord, remember me out of the love you have for your people.
- Our sin is the sin of our fathers; we have done wrong, our deeds have been evil. Our fathers when they were in Egypt paid no heed to your wonderful deeds.
- They fashioned a calf at Horeb and worshipped an image of metal, exchanging the God who was their glory for the image of a bull that eats grass.
- They forgot the God who was their saviour, who had done such great things in Egypt, such portents in the land of Ham, such marvels at the Red Sea.

Gospel : Mark 8:1-10
A great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat. So Jesus called his disciples to him and said to them, ‘I feel sorry for all these people; they have been with me for three days now and have nothing to eat. If I send them off home hungry they will collapse on the way; some have come a great distance.’ His disciples replied, ‘Where could anyone get bread to feed these people in a deserted place like this?’ He asked them, ‘How many loaves have you?’ ‘Seven’ they said. Then he instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves, and after giving thanks he broke them and handed them to his disciples to distribute; and they distributed them among the crowd. They had a few small fish as well, and over these he said a blessing and ordered them to be distributed also. They ate as much as they wanted, and they collected seven basketfuls of the scraps left over. Now there had been about four thousand people. He sent them away and immediately, getting into the boat with his disciples, went to the region of Dalmanutha.

O God, who have willed that we be partakers in the one Bread and the one Chalice, grant us, we pray, so to live that, made one in Christ, we may joyfully bear fruit for the salvation of the world. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Jesus recognises the need of the people who have been with him for three days without food. He decides to come to their rescue in spite of his meagre resources – seven loaves of bread and a few small fish. What is that for a multitude? It looks most insignificant. However, we are told that Jesus multiplies the bread and the fish, so much so that after the people have eaten, there are seven baskets full of scraps! This means that when we share with our brothers and sisters, even the small thing that we have becomes much. Of course, God replenishes our sources when we take care of his needy children. We are therefore called to share with our brothers and sisters without counting the cost.
