Évêque de Reims pendant soixante quinze ans, Remi (436-vers 530) intervint de façon décisive, en union avec la reine Clotilde, dans la conversion de Clovis au catholicisme. Le baptême du roi des Francs et de son armée par Remi (496) est à l’origine du rôle que joua la France dans l’histoire de l’Église et qui la fit appeler ‘’la fille aînée de l’Église’’.

1ère lecture : 1 S 3, 1-10. 19-20
En ces jours-là, le jeune Samuel assurait le service du Seigneur en présence du prêtre Éli. La parole du Seigneur était rare en ces jours-là, et la vision, peu répandue. Un jour, Éli était couché à sa place habituelle – sa vue avait baissé et il ne pouvait plus bien voir. La lampe de Dieu n’était pas encore éteinte. Samuel était couché dans le temple du Seigneur, où se trouvait l’arche de Dieu. Le Seigneur appela Samuel, qui répondit: «Me voici!» Il courut vers le prêtre Éli, et il dit: «Tu m’as appelé, me voici.» Éli répondit: «Je n’ai pas appelé. Retourne te coucher.» L’enfant alla se coucher. De nouveau, le Seigneur appela Samuel. Et Samuel se leva. Il alla auprès d’Éli, et il dit: «Tu m’as appelé, me voici.» Éli répondit: «Je n’ai pas appelé, mon fils. Retourne te coucher.» Samuel ne connaissait pas encore le Seigneur, et la parole du Seigneur ne lui avait pas encore été révélée. De nouveau, le Seigneur appela Samuel. Celui-ci se leva. Il alla auprès d’Éli, et il dit: «Tu m’as appelé, me voici.» Alors Éli comprit que c’était le Seigneur qui appelait l’enfant, et il lui dit: «Va te recoucher, et s’il t’appelle, tu diras: “Parle, Seigneur, ton serviteur écoute.» Samuel alla se recoucher à sa place habituelle. Le Seigneur vint, il se tenait là et il appela comme les autres fois: « Samuel ! Samuel!» Et Samuel répondit: «Parle, ton serviteur écoute.» Samuel grandit. Le Seigneur était avec lui, et il ne laissa aucune de ses paroles sans effet. Tout Israël, depuis Dane jusqu’à Bershéba, reconnut que Samuel était vraiment un prophète du Seigneur.

Évangile : Mc 1, 29-39
En ce temps-là, aussitôt sortis de la synagogue de Capharnaüm, Jésus et ses disciples allèrent, avec Jacques et Jean, dans la maison de Simon et d’André. Or, la belle-mère de Simon était au lit, elle avait de la fièvre. Aussitôt, on parla à Jésus de la malade. Jésus s’approcha, la saisit par la main et la fit lever. La fièvre la quitta, et elle les servait. Le soir venu, après le coucher du soleil, on lui amenait tous ceux qui étaient atteints d’un mal ou possédés par des démons. La ville entière se pressait à la porte. Il guérit beaucoup de gens atteints de toutes sortes de maladies, et il expulsa beaucoup de démons; il empêchait les démons de parler, parce qu’ils savaient, eux, qui il était. Le lendemain, Jésus se leva, bien avant l’aube. Il sortit et se rendit dans un endroit désert, et là il priait. Simon et ceux qui étaient avec lui partirent à sa recherche. Ils le trouvent et lui disent: «Tout le monde te cherche.» Jésus leur dit: «Allons ailleurs, dans les villages voisins, afin que là aussi je proclame l’Évangile; car c’est pour cela que je suis sorti.» Et il parcourut toute la Galilée, proclamant l’Évangile dans leurs synagogues, et expulsant les démons.

Méditation
L’appel de Samuel dans la première lecture nous place au cœur du mystère de toute vocation. C’est toujours Dieu qui nous appelle, parce qu’il nous connaît et qu’il nous aime. Il nous appelle toujours pour un projet qui dépasse nos projections personnelles. Il nous appelle à contribuer au salut de l’humanité. Cependant, toute authentique vocation nécessite le discernement. Samuel a besoin de la médiation du vieux prêtre Eli pour comprendre que c’est Dieu qui l’appelle. La mission que Dieu confie à chaque individu s’inscrit toujours dans la lignée de la mission de toute l’Église. Toute intuition, tout charisme et tout autre don doivent toujours se laisser éclairer par la sagesse de l’Église. Le discernement est nécessaire et permet la communion au sein de l’Église.

The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying in the sanctuary of the Lord where the ark of God was, when the Lord called, ‘Samuel! He went to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her and she began to wait on them. That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed by devils. The whole town came crowding round the door, and he cured many who were suffering from diseases of one kind or another; he also cast out many devils, but he would not allow them to speak, because they knew who he was. In the morning, long before dawn, he got up and left the house, and went off to a lonely place and prayed there. Simon and his companions set out in search of him, and when they found him they said, ‘Everybody is looking for you.’ He answered, ‘Let us go elsewhere, to the neighbouring country towns, so that I can preach there too, because that is why I came.’ And he went all through Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out devils.

God calls Samuel by name. he needed the attention of Samuel to communicate an important message to him. After several attempts, the Lord finally got the attention of Samuel in the following words: ‘Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.’ The Lord calls each one of us by name every now and then. Our God is one who communicates. He wants to communicate to us. As God calls us today to speak to us, may our response be, ‘Speak, Lord your servant is listening.

Une jeune captive chrétienne devenue esclave à la cour royale de Mzkhéta, non loin de Tbilissi en Géorgie, garde toute sa foi auprès du roi Mirian. Plus que sa beauté, c’est son inlassable charité qui la fait aimer et respecter. Ayant obtenu par ses prières la guérison d’un enfant, elle est appelée auprès de la reine Nana qui se meurt. Elle lui rend la santé. Quand le roi veut la récompenser, elle lui dit préférer sa conversion. Le roi en laisse d’abord le soin à sa femme. Il demandera à l’Archevêque de Constantinople de lui envoyer un évêque pour évangéliser le royaume.

Anne, pleine d’amertume, se mit à prier le Seigneur et pleura abondamment. Elle fit un vœu en disant: «Seigneur de l’univers! Si tu veux bien regarder l’humiliation de ta servante, te souvenir de moi, ne pas m’oublier, et me donner un fils, je le donnerai au Seigneur pour toute sa vie, et le rasoir ne passera pas sur sa tête.» Tandis qu’elle prolongeait sa prière devant le Seigneur, Éli observait sa bouche. Anne parlait dans son cœur: seules ses lèvres remuaient, et l’on n’entendait pas sa voix. Éli pensa qu’elle était ivre et lui dit: «Combien de temps vas-tu rester ivre? Cuve donc ton vin!» Anne répondit: «Non, mon seigneur, je ne suis qu’une femme affligée, je n’ai bu ni vin ni boisson forte; j’épanche mon âme devant le Seigneur. Ne prends pas ta servante pour une vaurienne: c’est l’excès de mon chagrin et de mon dépit qui m’a fait prier aussi longtemps.» Éli lui répondit: «Va en paix, et que le Dieu d’Israël t’accorde ce que tu lui as demandé.» Anne dit alors: « Que ta servante trouve grâce devant toi!» Elle s’en alla, elle se mit à manger, et son visage n’était plus le même. Le lendemain, Elcana et les siens se levèrent de bon matin. Après s’être prosternés devant le Seigneur, ils s’en retournèrent chez eux, à Rama. Elcana s’unit à Anne sa femme, et le Seigneur se souvint d’elle. Anne conçut et, le temps venu, elle enfanta un fils; elle lui donna le nom de Samuel (c’est-à-dire : Dieu exauce) car, disait-elle, «Je l’ai demandé au Seigneur.»

Evangile : Mc 1, 21-28

On était frappé par son enseignement, car il enseignait en homme qui a autorité, et non pas comme les scribes. Or, il y avait dans leur synagogue un homme tourmenté par un esprit impur, qui se mit à crier: «Que nous veux-tu, Jésus de Nazareth? Es-tu venu pour nous perdre? Je sais qui tu es: tu es le Saint de Dieu.» Jésus l’interpella vivement: « Tais-toi ! Sors de cet homme.» L’esprit impur le fit entrer en convulsions, puis, poussant un grand cri, sortit de lui. Ils furent tous frappés de stupeur et se demandaient entre eux: «Qu’est-ce que cela veut dire? Voilà un enseignement nouveau, donné avec autorité! Il commande même aux esprits impurs, et ils lui obéissent.» Sa renommée se répandit aussitôt partout, dans toute la région de la Galilée.

La nouveauté de l’enseignement de Jésus réside en deux points : il enseigne avec autorité et libère l’être humain de toute entrave du mal. Jésus annonce la nouveauté de Dieu : un Dieu qui s’intéresse à l’homme et le veut libre. Personne n’est esclave de son passé, de son péché, ni des forces du mal. De même que saint Irénée de Lyon disait que la gloire de Dieu c’est l’homme debout, de même l’on comprend que la gloire de Dieu c’est l’homme libre. Par sa personne et par son enseignement, Jésus offre à toute personne de vivre pleinement. Nous sommes créés par Dieu, non pas pour vivre comme des photocopies, selon le bon vouloir de Satan, mais pour vivre pleinement en assumant nos vies sous le regard du Christ.

Saint Felix of Nola (d. ca. 250) was a Christian presbyter at Nola near Naples in Italy. He sold off his possessions in order to give to the poor. He was believed to have died a martyr’s death.

Jesus and his disciples went as far as Capernaum, and as soon as the sabbath came he went to the synagogue and began to teach. In their synagogue just then there was a man possessed by an unclean spirit and it shouted, ‘What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus said sharply, ‘Be quiet! Come out of him!’ And the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and with a loud cry went out of him. The people were so astonished that they started asking each other what it all meant. ‘Here is a teaching that is new’ they said ‘and with authority behind it: he gives orders even to unclean spirits and they obey him.’ And his reputation rapidly spread everywhere, through all the surrounding Galilean countryside.

Meditation
The prayer of Hannah in the temple at Shiloh must have been very deep. She did not make any noise – “… for Hannah was speaking under her breath” – and yet her prayers were powerful enough to move God from his seat to bless her. The movement of Eli from his seat by the doorpost of the temple to Hannah and the subsequent blessing he gave to her are symbolic of what had taken place spiritually – God had moved from his seat and blessed Hannah. What was it about the prayer of Hannah that moved God? Hannah “poured out her soul before Yahweh.” Prayers that move God are prayers that emanate from the soul and not from the lips. When our prayer is deep enough that it moves us to tears, God will not sit down. He will move to bless us.

Évêque de Poitiers, Hilaire (315-367) fut l’ardent défenseur de la foi en la divinité du Christ, niée par les ariens ; il souffrit l’exil en raison de sa prise de position contre ces hérétiques. En Orient où cet évêque gaulois avait été exilé par l’empereur Constance, il ne cessa d’écrire à la gloire du Christ, qu’il n’avait pourtant découvert qu’à l’âge adulte. En effet, avant de devenir évêque (350) de sa ville natale, Hilaire avait d’abord été un père de famille païen. C’est par la méditation des Ecritures que cet homme en quête de vérité découvrit la splendeur du Christ et mérita de devenir le premier grand docteur de la foi que la Gaule avait donné à l’Eglise.

1ère lecture: 1 S 1, 1-8
Il y avait un homme de la ville de Rama, dans la montagne d’Éphraïm; il s’appelait Elcana, c’était un Éphratéen. Cet homme avait deux femmes. L’une s’appelait Anne, l’autre Peninna. Peninna avait des enfants, mais Anne n’en avait pas. Chaque année, Elcana montait de sa ville au sanctuaire de Silo pour se prosterner devant le Seigneur de l’univers et lui offrir un sacrifice. C’est à Silo que résidaient, comme prêtres du Seigneur, les deux fils d’Éli, Hofni et Pinhas. Un jour, Elcana offrait le sacrifice; il distribua des parts de la victime à sa femme Peninna, à tous ses fils et à toutes ses filles. Mais à Anne, il donna une part de choix car il aimait Anne, que pourtant le Seigneur avait rendue stérile. Sa rivale cherchait, par des paroles blessantes, à la mettre en colère parce que le Seigneur l’avait rendue stérile. Cela recommençait tous les ans, quand Anne montait au sanctuaire du Seigneur: Peninna cherchait à la mettre en colère. Anne pleura et ne voulut rien manger. Son mari Elcana lui dit: « Anne, pourquoi pleures-tu? Pourquoi ne manges-tu pas? Pourquoi ton cœur est-il triste? Et moi, est-ce que je ne compte pas à tes yeux plus que dix fils ? »

Evangile : Mc 1, 14-20
Après l’arrestation de Jean, Jésus partit pour la Galilée proclamer l’Évangile de Dieu; il disait: « Les temps sont accomplis: le règne de Dieu est tout proche. Convertissez-vous et croyez à l’Évangile. » Passant le long de la mer de Galilée, Jésus vit Simon et André, le frère de Simon, en train de jeter les filets dans la mer, car c’étaient des pêcheurs. Il leur dit: « Venez à ma suite. Je vous ferai devenir pêcheurs d’hommes.» Aussitôt, laissant leurs filets, ils le suivirent. Jésus avança un peu et il vit Jacques, fils de Zébédée, et son frère Jean, qui étaient dans la barque et réparaient les filets. Aussitôt, Jésus les appela. Méditation
Suivre Jésus n’est pas quelque chose de facile ; c’est un gros risque, mais en même temps c’est fascinant. En parcourant le Nouveau Testament et l’histoire du christianisme, on est frappé par le fait que Jésus fascine tous ceux qu’il appelle, car son enseignement est sublime et ne laisse personne indifférent. Surtout, sa parole n’est pas comme d’autres paroles. C’est une parole qui rassure, console, fortifie, oriente et met en marche. Jésus appelle des hommes à sa suite pour qu’ils restent avec lui et pour qu’ils les envoie partout il devait aller lui-même. La rencontre avec Jésus bouleverse toute vie. On ne peut pas rester le même après l’avoir rencontré. Tout quitter pour embrasser des horizons nouveaux est un grand risque, mais c’est fascinant. Il faut juste faire confiance à Jésu

Meditation
The nets of Simon and Andrew were their means of self-reliance. But when they encountered Jesus, there was a shift from self-reliance to God-reliance; they left their nets and followed Jesus. James and John also had to make a shift from human attachment (to their father) to a divine attachment; following Jesus. Something must be left behind in any true encounter with the Lord. The irresistible call of the Lord leads us to make some genuine sacrifices. Without leaving behind something, we cannot follow the Lord.

Meditation
Today we are celebrating the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord in the Jordan River by St. John the Baptist. He is baptized not because he is a sinner but because he wants to be in solidarity with us especially in our journey towards the Kingdom of God. He wants to show that he is with us and is one of us. We are celebrating the Feast of the Lord’s Baptism in order to remind ourselves of our own baptism. When we are baptized, there should be a change of heart and we become Christians. When we were baptized we chose Christ above all people and things. We believe in the Holy Trinity and we have a vocation to be like Christ and to act like Christ.

Évangile : Mt 3, 13-17
Jésus, arrivant de Galilée, paraît sur les bords du Jourdain, et il vient à Jean pour se faire baptiser par lui. Jean voulait l’en empêcher et disait: «C’est moi qui ai besoin de me faire baptiser par toi, et c’est toi qui viens à moi ! » Mais Jésus lui répondit: «Pour le moment, laisse-moi faire ; c’est de cette façon que nous devons accomplir parfaitement ce qui est juste.» Alors Jean le laisse faire. Dès que Jésus fut baptisé, il sortit de l’eau ; voici que les cieux s’ouvrirent, et il vit l’Esprit de Dieu descendre comme une colombe et venir sur lui. Méditation
Trois signes accompagnent le baptême de Jésus : les cieux s’ouvrent, l’Esprit descend et la voix du Père donne l’identité de Jésus. Ces trois signes mettent en valeur la profondeur et la beauté du baptême chrétien. Dieu ouvre les cieux et descend. Il rétablit la relation brisée avec l’humanité. Mais plus encore, il habite en chaque baptisé et lui révèle sa véritable identité. Dans le baptême, Dieu se donne totalement à l’homme : Il se donne comme Père, Fils et Esprit-Saint. Il plonge l’homme dans sa propre intimité. Le baptisé vit donc de la vie même de Dieu. Il est réellement enfant bien-aimé de Dieu. Il devra toujours s’abreuver à cette relation d’amour et d’intimité avec Dieu. Oui, comme chrétien, je dois toujours me rappeler chaque jour que Dieu a mis tout son amour en moi.

He was Archbishop of Bourges from 1200 until 1209. He was given to a life of exercises of piety and to the acquisition of knowledge. Saint William was canonized on May 17, 1218.

First reading : 1 John 5:14-21
We are quite confident that if we ask the Son of God for anything, and it is in accordance with his will, he will hear us; and, knowing that whatever we may ask, he hears us, we know that we have already been granted what we asked of him. If anybody sees his brother commit a sin that is not a deadly sin, he has only to pray, and God will give life to the sinner – not those who commit a deadly sin; for there is a sin that is death, and I will not say that you must pray about that. Every kind of strong doing is sin, but not all sin is deadly. We know that anyone who has been begotten by God does not sin, because the begotten Son of God protects him, and the Evil One does not touch him. We know that we belong to god, but the whole world lies in the power of the Evil One. We know, too, that the Son of God has come, and has given us the power to know the true God. Gospel John 3:22-30
Jesus went with his disciples into the Judaean countryside and stayed with them there and baptized. Now some of John’s disciples had opened a discussion with a Jew about purification, so they went to John and said: ‘Rabbi, the man who was with you on the far side of the Jordan, the man to whom you bore witness, is baptising now; and everyone is going to him.’ John replied: ‘A man can lay claim only to what is given him from heaven.’ ‘You yourselves can bear me out: I said I myself am not the Christ, I am the one who has been sent in front of him. ‘The bride is only for the bridegroom; and yet the bridegroom’ friend, who stands there and listens, is glad when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. This same joy I feel, and now it is complete. He must grow greater, I must grow smaller.’

Meditation
The statement: “I want to be Number One!” is the shout of pride of many of us. But history is filled with the sweet and sour stories of some people who achieved their dreams and became number one in their fields. These people were somewhat good at the start of their lives but they ended up in ways we do not want to end up ourselves. In some parts of the gospel, the apostles were envious of one another. They quarrelled among themselves about “who was the first”. But John the Baptist, in the gospel of today, is different. Even if he has made a name for himself already as the “the Baptist,” he does not resent or get angry when he receives a report that Jesus is also baptising. He is happy that Jesus is recognized. He said: “This joy of mine has been made complete.” He even encourages his own disciples to follow Jesus by pointing to him as the Lamb of God. He shows his deep humility when he says that ‘he must increase and I must decrease.’

Il passa pour être l’un des hommes les plus savants de son époque, écrivant aussi bien en prose qu’en vers. Alcuin le considérait comme son maître et l’empereur Charlemagne l’appela un jour dans sa cour pour en faire l’un de ses conseillers en matière religieuse. C’est lui qui le fit nommer évêque d’Aquilée, dans le Frioul italien. Selon ses contemporains, il fut « la lumière de la chrétienté » sans pour autant négliger le soin de son propre diocèse.

Première lecture : 1 Jn 5, 14-21
Bien-aimés, voici l’assurance que nous avons auprès de Dieu: si nous faisons une demande selon sa volonté, il nous écoute. Et, puisque nous savons qu’il nous écoute en toutes nos demandes, nous savons aussi que nous obtenons ce que nous lui avons demandé. Si quelqu’un voit son frère commettre un péché qui n’entraîne pas la mort, il demandera, et Dieu lui donnera la vie, – cela vaut pour ceux dont le péché n’entraîne pas la mort. Il y a un péché qui entraîne la mort, ce n’est pas pour celui-là que je dis de prier. Toute conduite injuste est péché, mais tout péché n’entraîne pas la mort. Nous le savons: ceux qui sont nés de Dieu ne commettent pas de péché; le Fils engendré par Dieu les protège et le Mauvais ne peut pas les atteindre. Nous savons que nous sommes de Dieu, alors que le monde entier est au pouvoir du Mauvais. Nous savons aussi que le Fils de Dieu est venu nous donner l’intelligence pour que nous connaissions Celui qui est vrai; et nous sommes en Celui qui est vrai, en son Fils Jésus Christ. C’est lui qui est le Dieu vrai, et la vie éternelle. Petits enfants, gardez-vous des idoles.

En ce temps-là, Jésus se rendit en Judée, ainsi que ses disciples ; il y séjourna avec eux, et il baptisait. Jean, quant à lui, baptisait à Aïnone, près de Salim, où l’eau était abondante. On venait là pour se faire baptiser. En effet, Jean n’avait pas encore été mis en prison. Or, il y eut une discussion entre les disciples de Jean et un Juif au sujet des bains de purification. Ils allèrent trouver Jean et lui dirent: «Rabbi, celui qui était avec toi de l’autre côté du Jourdain, celui à qui tu as rendu témoignage, le voilà qui baptise, et tous vont à lui!» Jean répondit: «Un homme ne peut rien s’attribuer, sinon ce qui lui est donné du Ciel. Vous-mêmes pouvez témoigner que j’ai dit: Moi, je ne suis pas le Christ, mais j’ai été envoyé devant lui. Celui à qui l’épouse appartient, c’est l’époux; quant à l’ami de l’époux, il se tient là, il entend la voix de l’époux, et il en est tout joyeux. Telle est ma joie: elle est parfaite. Lui, il faut qu’il grandisse; et moi, que je diminue.»

Ton peuple, Seigneur, a besoin de multiples secours pour sa traversée d’ici-bas, que ta bonté les lui donne aujourd’hui et demain : trouvant alors la force nécessaire dans les biens qui passent, il recherchera les biens éternels avec plus de confiance. Par Jésus…
Méditation
En apprenant que Jésus baptise comme lui, Jean Baptiste, loin de verser dans la polémique et la rivalité, confirme sa profonde humilité. Jean connaît et accepte sa place par rapport à Jésus dont il reconnaît la supériorité. C’est joyeusement qu’il s’efface devant Jésus ; d’où cette image de l’ami et de l’époux qu’il utilise lui-même pour signifier son rapport au Christ. Symboliquement, la liturgie célèbre la naissance de Jean Baptiste le 24 juin, au solstice d’été où la longueur des jours commence à diminuer ; et la naissance de Jésus est fêtée le 25 décembre, au solstice d’hiver lorsque les jours deviennent plus longs : « Il faut qu’il grandisse et que moi je décroisse ». Pour faire grandir les autres nous devons accepter de nous placer derrière eux. Non seulement l’humilité consiste à accepter et à aimer notre place, mais aussi à la céder aux autres pour qu’ils puissent avancer et grandir sous notre regard joyeux.
