Saint François de Paule, ermite
Les fils de saint François d’Assise s’appelaient, par humilité, les ‘’Frères mineurs’’. Un ermite originaire de Paola en Calabre et portant le prénom du Poverello voulut, pour lui-même et ses disciples, une humilité plus radicale encore : ces religieux furent les ‘’Minimes’’ (les plus petits) ! François de Paule (1416-1507) n’était pas prêtre, mais il avait le don des miracles. Le roi Louis XI, malade et redoutant la mort, entendit parler de lui et obtint du pape que le saint vînt en France. Il ne fut pas guéri par le thaumaturge, mais, sous son influence, il affronta la mort avec sérénité. Par la suite, François demeura à Plessis-Lès-Tours, d’où son ordre essaima.

En ces jours-là, au cours d’une vision reçue du Seigneur, l’homme me fit revenir à l’entrée de la Maison, et voici: sous le seuil de la Maison, de l’eau jaillissait vers l’orient, puisque la façade de la Maison était du côté de l’orient. L’eau descendait de dessous le côté droit de la Maison, au sud de l’autel. L’homme me fit sortir par la porte du nord et me fit faire le tour par l’extérieur, jusqu’à la porte qui fait face à l’orient, et là encore l’eau coulait du côté droit. L’homme s’éloigna vers l’orient: une corde, au à la main, et il mesura une distance de mille coudées ; alors il me fit traverser l’eau : j’en avais jusqu’aux chevilles. Il en mesura encore mille : c’était un torrent que je ne pouvais traverser ; l’eau avait grossi, il aurait fallu nager : c’était un torrent infranchissable. Alors il me dit: « As-tu vu, fils d’homme ? » Puis il me ramena au bord du torrent. Quand il m’eut ramené, voici qu’il y avait au bord du torrent, de chaque côté, des arbres en grand nombre. Il me dit : « Cette eau coule vers la région de l’orient, elle descend dans la vallée du Jourdain, et se déverse dans la mer Morte, dont elle assainit les eaux. En tout lieu où parviendra le torrent, tous les animaux pourront vivre et foisonner. Le poisson sera très abondant, car cette eau assainit tout ce qu’elle pénètre, et la vie apparaît en tout lieu où arrive le torrent. Au bord du torrent, sur les deux rives, toutes sortes d’arbres fruitiers pousseront; leur feuillage ne se flétrira pas et leurs fruits ne manqueront pas. Chaque mois ils porteront des fruits nouveaux, car cette eau vient du sanctuaire. Les fruits seront une nourriture, et les feuilles un remède.».

Évangile : Jean 5, 1-16
À l’occasion d’une fête juive, Jésus monta à Jérusalem. Or, à Jérusalem, près de la porte des Brebis, il existe une piscine qu’on appelle en hébreu Bethzatha. Elle a cinq colonnades, sous lesquelles étaient couchés une foule de malades, aveugles, boiteux et impotents. Il y avait là un homme qui était malade depuis trente-huit ans. Jésus, le voyant couché là, et apprenant qu’il était dans cet état depuis longtemps, lui dit: «Veux-tu être guéri?» Le malade lui répondit: « Seigneur, je n’ai personne pour me plonger dans la piscine au moment où l’eau bouillonne; et pendant que j’y vais, un autre descend avant moi. » Jésus lui dit : « Lève-tôt, prends ton brancard, et marche. » Et aussitôt l’homme fut guéri. Il prit son brancard : il marchait! Or, ce jour-là était un jour de sabbat. Les Juifs dirent donc à cet homme que Jésus avait remis sur pied: « C’est le sabbat! Il ne t’est pas permis de porter ton brancard. » Il leur répliqua: «Celui qui m’a guéri, c’est lui qui m’a dit: “Prends ton brancard, et marche!” » Ils l’interrogèrent : « Quel est l’homme qui t’a dit: “Prends ton brancard, et marche” ? » Mais celui qui avait été rétabli ne savait pas qui c’était; en effet, Jésus s’était éloigné, car il y avait foule à cet endroit. Plus tard, Jésus le retrouve dans le Temple et lui dit : « Te voilà guéri. Ne pèche plus, il pourrait t’arriver quelque chose de pire. » L’homme partit annoncer aux Juifs que c’était Jésus qui l’avait guéri. Et ceux-ci persécutaient Jésus parce qu’il avait fait cela le jour du sabbat.

Nous te présentons, Seigneur, des biens que toi-même nous as donnés : qu’ils te disent notre reconnaissance devant tout ce que ta création nous propose pour assurer notre vie sur la terre ; qu’ils deviennent aussi le remède qui nous guérira et nous fera vivre éternellement. Par Jésus.

Mon berger, c’est le Seigneur : je ne manque de rien ; sur de frais pâturages, il me laisse reposer. Il me mène auprès des eaux tranquilles et me fait revivre.

MÉDITATION
La prophétie d’Ézéchiel consiste en une vision qui annonce que le corps du Christ, temple d’où jaillit l’eau vive du baptême, inondera de sa sève de vie nouvelle tous les peuples de la terre. Qu’ils viennent de l’Occident, du Midi, du Nord ou de l’Orient d’où vient cette eau, tous auront part à la table du Seigneur. La croix dont les fruits nourriront les justes, est un remède pour les malades et un secours toujours offert. De même, la parole de Jésus est pour le malade de Besatha un traitement efficace qui lui donne la guérison. L’Élu de Dieu est à la porte de notre cœur, ouvrons nous avec confiance et tendresse à sa miséricorde. Grâce à elle, notre guérison est assurée même pour les péchés les plus coriaces que nous avons commis consciemment ou inconsciemment.

There was a Jewish festival, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now at the Sheep Pool in Jerusalem there is a building, called Bethzatha in Hebrew, consisting of five porticos; and under these were crowds of sick people – blind, lame, paralysed – waiting for the water to move. One man there had an illness which had lasted thirty-eight years, and when Jesus saw him lying there and knew he had been in this condition for a long time, he said, ‘Do you want to be well again?’ ‘Sir,’ replied the sick man ‘I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is disturbed; and while I am still on the way, someone else gets there before me.’ Jesus said, ‘Get up, pick up your sleeping-mat and walk.’ The man was cured at once, and he picked up his mat and walked away. Now that day happened to be the sabbath, so the Jews said to the man who had been cured, ‘It is the sabbath; you are not allowed to carry your sleeping-mat.’ He replied, ‘But the man who cured me told me, “Pick up your mat and walk.”’ They asked, ‘Who is the man who said to you, “Pick up your mat and walk”?’ The man had no idea who it was, since Jesus had disappeared into the crowd that filled the place. After a while Jesus met him in the Temple and said, ‘Now you are well again, be sure not to sin any more, or something worse may happen to you.’ The man went back and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had cured him. It was because he did things like this on the sabbath that the Jews began to persecute Jesus.

Meditation
The prophecy of Ezekiel consists of a vision which announces that the body of Christ is the temple. From it, the living water of baptism springs and floods all the peoples of the earth with its sap of new life. Whether they come from the West, from the South, from the North, or from the East, all will be partakers of the Lord’s banquet. The cross whose fruit will nourish the righteous is a remedy for the sick. In the same way, the word of Jesus is an effective treatment that gives healing to the patient of Bethesda. Jesus is at the door of our heart; let us open up with confidence and tenderness to his mercy.

Gospel: John 4:43-54
Jesus left Samaria for Galilee. He himself had declared that there is no respect for a prophet in his own country, but on his arrival the Galileans received him well, having seen all that he had done at Jerusalem during the festival which they too had attended. He went again to Cana in Galilee, where he had changed the water into wine. Now there was a court official there whose son was ill at Capernaum and, hearing that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judaea, he went and asked him to come and cure his son as he was at the point of death. Jesus said, ‘So you will not believe unless you see signs and portents!’ ‘Sir,’ answered the official ‘come down before my child dies.’ ‘Go home,’ said Jesus ‘your son will live.’ The man believed what Jesus had said and started on his way; and while he was still on the journey back his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive. He asked them when the boy had begun to recover. ‘The fever left him yesterday’ they said ‘at the seventh hour.’ The father realised that this was exactly the time when Jesus had said, ‘Your son will live’; and he and all his household believed. This was the second sign given by Jesus, on his return from Judaea to Galilee.

Meditation
Jesus recalls in this episode the difficulty of being a prophet at home and in the midst of one’s family. It is very possible that despite the signs of healing and miracles, our heart is slow to believe. Jesus’ miracles are signs that manifest the presence and power of God’s kingdom. The court official believed in Jesus’ word without doubt. We are challenged today to surrender our doubts and fears, our pride and fame at the feet of Jesus and trust in his saving word and healing love. The word of God has inherent power to heal and make us whole. The spoken word of Jesus creates faith as we see in the court official; it transforms and heals the dying son. Do you accept the authority and the power of the spoken word of God and submit to it with faith and obedience?

Homme austère et droit, Hugues (1053-1132) fut choisi comme arbitre dans maints conflits. Se convaincant régulièrement d’être indigne de l’épiscopat alors qu’il fut désigné comme évêque de Grenoble, il prendra courageusement parti pour le pape Pascal aux prises avec l’empereur d’Allemagne Henri IV.

En ce temps-là, après avoir passé deux jours chez les Samaritains, Jésus partit de là pour la Galilée.– Lui-même avait témoigné qu’un prophète n’est pas considéré dans son propre pays. Il arriva donc en Galilée ; les Galiléens lui firent bon accueil, car ils avaient vu tout ce qu’il avait fait à Jérusalem pendant la fête de la Pâque, puisqu’ils étaient allés eux aussi à cette fête. Ainsi donc Jésus revint à Cana de Galilée, où il avait changé l’eau en vin. Or, il y avait un fonctionnaire royal, dont le fils était malade à Capharnaüm. Ayant appris que Jésus arrivait de Judée en Galilée, il alla le trouver; il lui demandait de descendre à Capharnaüm pour guérir son fils qui était mourant. Jésus lui dit : «Si vous ne voyez pas de signes et de prodiges, vous ne croirez donc pas !» Le fonctionnaire royal lui dit: « Seigneur, descends, avant que mon enfant ne meure ! » Jésus lui répond : « Va, ton fils est vivant. » L’homme crut à la parole que Jésus lui avait dite et il partit. Pendant qu’il descendait, ses serviteurs arrivèrent à sa rencontre et lui dirent que son enfant était vivant. Il voulut savoir à quelle heure il s’était trouvé mieux. Ils lui dirent : « C’est hier, à la septième heure (au début de l’après-midi), que la fièvre l’a quitté.» Le père se rendit compte que c’était justement l’heure où Jésus lui avait dit : « Ton fils est vivant. » Alors il crut, lui, ainsi que tous les gens de sa maison. Tel fut le second signe que Jésus accomplit lorsqu’il revint de Judée en Galilée.

De l’offrande qui t’est consacrée, Seigneur, nous attendons des fruits du salut : débarrasse-nous de tout ce qui doit mourir, renouvelle-nous constamment de ta propre vie. Par Jésus.

MÉDITATION
Jésus rappelle dans cet épisode, la difficulté d’être prophète chez soi, au milieu des siens. C’est un rapport d’équilibre qu’il faut admettre avec foi, la vérité de Dieu. Malgré, les signes de guérisons et des miracles, notre cœur est lent à croire. La promesse de joie et d’éternité du livre d’Isaïe est aujourd’hui à l’œuvre dans la nouvelle Jérusalem que préfigure l’Église du Christ Jésus, comme signe vivant de cette réalisation. Nous vivons dès ici-bas le début de ce Royaume des Cieux dans un « déjà là et pas encore ». Participons, en tant que membre de cet ensemble, à la sainte réalisation de l’Église.

Second reading 2 Corinthians 5:17-21
For anyone who is in Christ, there is a new creation; the old creation has gone, and now the new one is here. It is all God’s work. It was God who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the work of handing on this reconciliation. In other words, God in Christ was reconciling the world to himself, not holding men’s faults against them, and he has entrusted to us the news that they are reconciled. So we are ambassadors for Christ; it is as though God were appealing through us, and the appeal that we make in Christ’s name is: be reconciled to God. For our sake God made the sinless one into sin, so that in him we might become the goodness of God.

The younger said to his father, “Father, let me have the share of the estate that would come to me.” So the father divided the property between them. A few days later, the younger son got together everything he had and left for a distant country where he squandered his money on a life of debauchery. ‘When he had spent it all, that country experienced a severe famine, and now he began to feel the pinch, so he hired himself out to one of the local inhabitants who put him on his farm to feed the pigs. And he would willingly have filled his belly with the husks the pigs were eating but no one offered him anything. Then he came to his senses and said, “How many of my father’s paid servants have more food than they want, and here am I dying of hunger! But, for this son of yours, when he comes back after swallowing up your property – he and his women – you kill the calf we had been fattening.” ‘The father said, “My son, you are with me always and all I have is yours. But it was only right we should celebrate and rejoice, because your brother here was dead and has come to life; he was lost and is found.”’

Meditation
Today’s Gospel passage is famously titled “The Prodigal Son” or “The Merciful Father”. It could also be called the parable of the unmerciful brother, considering the unbecoming behaviour of the elder son after the return of his brother. If he was truly a brother he would have joined the father, servants and others in celebrating the return of his brother. But he doesn’t; in his conversation with their father, he refers to him as “this son of yours”, thus expressing his total disregard for him. He could not understand his father’s mercy for his younger brother, because he did not realise that God’s desire is not to punish but to save. To use the language of the Second Reading, with the return of the prodigal son, the old creation is gone and the new creation has come; the irresponsible boy is dead and a new son, forgiven and united with his father,has been born. This is what God wants for all of us; he wants us to renounce our sinful ways and be reconciled with him.

Le lendemain de la Pâque, en ce jour même, ils mangèrent les produits de cette terre : des pains sans levain et des épis grillés. Deuxième lecture : 2 Corinthiens 5, 17-21
Frères, si quelqu’un est dans le Christ, il est une créature nouvelle. Le monde ancien s’en est allé, un monde nouveau est déjà né. Tout cela vient de Dieu : il nous a réconciliés avec lui par le Christ, et il nous a donné le ministère de la réconciliation. Car c’est bien Dieu qui, dans le Christ, réconciliait le monde avec lui : il n’a pas tenu compte des fautes, et il a déposé en nous la parole de la réconciliation. Nous sommes donc les ambassadeurs du Christ, et par nous c’est Dieu lui-même qui lance un appel : nous le demandons au nom du Christ, laissez-vous réconcilier avec Dieu. Celui qui n’a pas connu le péché, Dieu l’a pour nous identifier au péché, afin qu’en lui nous devenions justes de la justice même de Dieu.

En ce temps-là, les publicains et les pécheurs venaient tous à Jésus pour l’écouter. Les pharisiens et les scribes récriminaient contre lui : « Cet homme fait bon accueil aux pécheurs, et il mange avec eux ! » Alors Jésus leur dit cette parabole: « Un homme avait deux fils. Le plus jeune dit à son père : ‘Père, donne-moi la part de fortune qui me revient.’ Et le père leur partagea ses biens. Peu de jours après, le plus jeune rassembla tout ce qu’il avait, et partit pour un pays lointain où il dilapida sa fortune en menant une vie de désordre. Il avait tout dépensé, quand une grande famine survint dans ce pays, et il commença à se trouver dans le besoin. Celui-ci répondit : ‘Ton frère est arrivé, et ton père a tué le veau gras, parce qu’il a retrouvé ton frère en bonne santé.’ Alors le fils aîné se mit en colère, et il refusait d’entrer. Son père sortit le supplier. MÉDITATION
L’attitude aimante de Jésus, à travers son bon accueil réservé aux pécheurs et aux publicains, nous dévoile le cœur miséricordieux du Père. Un Père qui guette le retour de son fils parti au loin où il a mené une mauvaise vie, un Père qui attend à bras ouverts son fils perdu, un Père qui est content de revoir et d’embrasser son fils ayant gaspillé tous ses biens, un Père qui organise une grande fête pour honorer son fils et lui montrer qu’il compte toujours à ses yeux en dépit de ses fautes. Quelle est notre attitude vis-à-vis des pécheurs ? Comment les traitons-nous ? Comment les accueillons-nous ? Chers frères et sœurs, nous sommes des pécheurs repentis et pardonnés. Soyons miséricordieux et tendres vis-à-vis de nos frères et nos sœurs.

A 17 ans, celui qui était Duc de Savoie épousa la sœur du roi Louis XII. Ils eurent sept enfants et formèrent un ménage heureux. Atteint d’épilepsie, il accepta cette maladie comme une participation à la souffrance du Christ. Il mourut en 1472.

Venez, retournons vers le Seigneur ! il a blessé, mais il nous guérira ; il a frappé, mais il nous soignera. En ce temps-là, à l’adresse de certains qui étaient convaincus d’être justes et qui méprisaient les autres, Jésus dit la parabole que voici : « Deux hommes montèrent au Temple pour prier. L’un était pharisien, et l’autre, publicain (c’est-à-dire un collecteur d’impôts). Le pharisien se tenait debout et priait en lui-même: “Mon Dieu, je te rends grâce parce que je ne suis pas comme les autres hommes – ils sont voleurs, injustes, adultères –, ou encore comme ce publicain. Je jeûne deux fois par semaine et je verse le dixième de tout ce que je gagne.” Le publicain, lui, se tenait à distance et n’osait même pas lever les yeux vers le ciel ; mais il se frappait la poitrine, en disant : “Mon Dieu, montre- toi favorable au pécheur que je suis !” Je vous le déclare : quand ce dernier redescendit dans sa maison, c’est lui qui était devenu un homme juste, plutôt que l’autre. Qui s’élève sera abaissé ; qui s’abaisse sera élevé. »

MÉDITATION
L’évangile de ce jour nous donne de contempler l’humilité du publicain, considéré comme pécheur, un exclu du Royaume de Dieu par le Pharisien. Comme le texte le dit clairement, le pharisien était convaincu d’être juste et méprisait tous les autres. Mais ceci ne lui suffit pas. Il va au Temple et y présente une prière pleine d’arrogance, en plus d’accuser d’humilier le publicain : « Mon Dieu, je te rends grâce parce que je ne suis pas comme les autres hommes: voleurs, injustes, adultères, ou encore comme ce publicain ». A l’inverse, publicain, reconnaissant son état de pécheur et se tenant à distance, va implorer la pitié du Seigneur. Son attitude humble lui ouvrira la porte de la justification. Il sera exaucé et deviendra juste aux yeux du Seigneur. Imitons l’humilité du publicain.

Meditation
Egoism and pride are two sisters which make very bad company in a person. Jesus teaches about these two vices which unfortunately are part of human nature. The Pharisee’s prayer started very well: “I thank God…”, but immediately took a wrong turn, as he focused on praying about himself. Four times he used the personal pronoun “I”, showing his egoism and pride. The tax collector instead stood aloof in an attitude of humility and a sense of unworthiness. Beating his breast in sorrow, he pronounced the words which transformed him from a sinner to a virtuous man: “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” We should always go to God in prayer with good and right attitude in order to come back justified. A full glass cannot receive any water; it must be emptied first. We should empty ourselves of our self-righteousness and acknowledge our unworthiness and sinfulness before, in order for him to fill us with his grace.

Meditation
The question put to Jesus concerns the heart of the Law, that is, the foundation without which the entire Torah would not exist. Jesus responds by stating that the whole Law is founded on love of God and love of neighbour. Our entire existence can be summed up in two relations: our relationship with God and our relationship with our neighbour. These two relations should be founded on love. We must show love for God by going to him regularly in prayer and doing what he commands us to do. We must show love for our neighbour by striving to help them know happiness and peace. These two commandments are actually inseparable, because, God manifests himself to us through the people we meet, and if we cannot love those around us whom we see, then wecannot claim to love God whom we do not see.

Première lecture : Osée 14, 2-10
Ainsi parle le Seigneur : Reviens, Israël, au Seigneur ton Dieu ; car tu t’es effondré par suite de tes fautes. Revenez au Seigneur en lui présentant ces paroles : « Enlève toutes les fautes, et accepte ce qui est bon. Au lieu de taureaux, nous t’offrons en sacrifice les paroles de nos lèvres. Puisque les Assyriens ne peuvent pas nous sauver, nous ne monterons plus sur des chevaux, et nous ne dirons plus à l’ouvrage de nos mains : “Tu es notre Dieu », car de toi seul l’orphelin reçoit de la tendresse. Voici la réponse du Seigneur : Je les guérirai de leur infidélité, je les aimerai d’un amour gratuit, car ma colère s’est détournée d’Israël. Je serai pour Israël comme la rosée, il fleurira comme le lis, il étendra ses racines comme les arbres du Liban. Ses jeunes pousses vont grandir, sa parure sera comme celle de l’olivier, son parfum, comme celui de la forêt du Liban. Ils reviendront s’asseoir à son ombre, ils feront revivre le froment, ils fleuriront comme la vigne, ils seront renommés comme le vin du Liban. Ephraïm ! Peux-tu me confondre avec les idoles ? C’est moi qui te réponds et qui te regarde. Je suis comme le cyprès toujours vert, c’est moi qui te donne ton fruit. Qui donc est assez sage pour comprendre ces choses, assez pénétrant pour les saisir ? Oui, les chemins du Seigneur sont droits : les justes y avancent, mais les pécheurs y trébuchent.

1. J’entends des mots qui m’étaient inconnus : « J’ai ôté le poids qui chargeait ses épaules ; ses mains ont déposé le fardeau. Quand tu criais sous l’oppression, je t’ai sauvé.
2. « Je répondais, caché dans l’orage, je t’éprouvais près des eaux de Mériba. Écoute, je t’adjure, ô mon peuple ; vas-tu m’écouter, Israël ?
3. « Tu n’auras pas chez toi d’autres dieux, tu ne serviras aucun dieu étranger. C’est moi, le Seigneur ton Dieu, qui t’ai fait monter de la terre d’Égypte !
4. « Ah! Si mon peuple m’écoutait, Israël, s’il allait sur mes chemins ! Je le nourrirais de la fleur du froment, je le rassasierais avec le miel du rocher ! »

Évangile : Marc 12, 28b- 34
En ce temps-là, un scribe s’avança vers Jésus pour lui demander : «Quel est le premier de tous les commandements?» Jésus lui fit cette réponse : « Voici le premier : Écoute, Israël : le Seigneur notre Dieu est l’unique Seigneur. Tu aimeras le Seigneur ton Dieu de tout ton cœur, de toute ton âme, de tout ton esprit et de toute ta force. Et voici le second: Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même. Il n’y a pas de commandement plus grand que ceux-là. » Le scribe reprit : « Fort bien, Maître, tu as dit vrai: Dieu est l’Unique et il n’y en a pas d’autre que lui. L’aimer de tout son cœur, de toute son intelligence, de toute sa force, et aimer son prochain comme soi-même, vaut mieux que toute offrande d’holocaustes et de sacrifices. » Jésus, voyant qu’il avait fait une remarque judicieuse, lui dit : «Tu n’es pas loin du royaume de Dieu.» Et personne n’osait plus l’interroger.
Prière sur les offrandes
Jette un regard bienveillant, Seigneur, sur les offrandes que nous te consacrons : qu’elles deviennent l’offrande que tu aimes, et qu’elles nous apportent le salut. Par Jésus.

Aimer Dieu de tout son cœur, et son prochain comme soi-même vaut mieux que tous les sacrifices.
Prière après la communion :
Que ta propre énergie, Seigneur, transforme nos esprits et nos corps ; ainsi, serons-nous sauvés tout entiers dans cette communion à ton Fils. Lui qui règne.
MÉDITATION
Le prophète Osée, dont le texte est un vrai poème d’amour, amour de Dieu pour son peuple, nous lance une adresse un appel à la conversion: « Reviens, Israël, au Seigneur ton Dieu ; car tu t’es effondré par suite de tes fautes. Revenez au Seigneur en lui présentant ces paroles… ». Pour lui, la conversion est la seule vraie source de bonheur. A cette attitude pleine d’humilité, le Seigneur répond de manière favorable, en promettant à son peuple joie et bonheur. Cette joie et ce bonheur résident dans la sincérité de notre cœur, laquelle nous appelle à vivre la Loi nouvelle du Christ : celle de l’amour de Dieu et du prochain. Qu’attendons-nous pour revenir au Seigneur, en pratiquant la Loi de l’amour, afin d’avoir part à la joie et au bonheur sans fin ?
