Meditation
In the pagan religions, babbling was described negatively as the practice of wearing out the gods with many unnecessary words. Jesus challenges the Christians to differ from pagans when they pray because God knows their needs even before they could enlist them. In other words, it is unnecessary to address a multitude of words to God in order to get his attention. The prayer learned from Jesus therefore is short but very powerful. It begins with the words, “Our Father in heaven.” What follows is three petitions asking God to be central in our world and three petitions concerning our needs as Christians

MÉDITATION
La fécondité et l’efficacité de la Parole de Dieu sont au centre de l’enseignement de l’extrait du livre d’Isaïe que nous méditons aujourd’hui. La Parole est féconde pour quiconque l’écoute, l’accueille et la pratique dans sa vie. Elle est efficace, car porteuse du salut, de libération pour l’homme. Cette Parole, c’est Jésus-Christ, le Verbe fait chair (Jn 1, 1.14). C’est en elle que nous devons croire pour être sauvés, libérés de la servitude du péché et des structures oppressives de ce monde. Mais, seuls, nous ne pouvons rien. Nous avons besoin de la force de la prière, de l’union vitale avec notre Père. Que la puissance de la prière nous aide à accueillir la Parole de Dieu pour qu’elle porte des fruits de salut dans notre vie et celle de nos frères et sœurs.

Meditation
In the Year of Mercy the Supreme Pontiff unceasingly and tirelessly exhorted Christians, especially Catholics, to perform works of mercy. From Jesus’ teaching today, we learn that the blessed and righteous are those who do the works of mercy: they give food to the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, visit the sick and care for the incarcerated. MÉDITATION
« Soyez saints, car moi, le Seigneur votre Dieu, je suis saint ». La perfection ou la sainteté est l’être, la nature ontologique ou l’essence même de Dieu. C’est à cette sainteté que l’Église, à travers la Parole de Dieu, nous invite en ce jour. Dans la première lecture, nous sommes appelés à devenir des saints parce que Dieu, notre Père, est Saint. Le Concile Vatican II nous adresse cet appel à la perfection dans la Constitution dogmatique Lumen Gentium (n°40). Il nous indique que cette sainteté est à la portée de tous les hommes. D’où l’appel universel à celle-ci qu’il nous lance. Et l’Évangile selon saint Matthieu qui nous est proposé, nous donne une manière concrète, un comportement fondamental à adopter pour vivre la perfection : notre solidarité, attention, sensibilité ou charité vis-à-vis des plus petits. En un mot, c’est par l’amour envers les pauvres que nous deviendrons des saints et serons jugés au dernier jour.

Deuxième lecture : Romains 10, 8-13
Frères, que dit l’Écriture ? Tout près de toi est la Parole, elle est dans ta bouche et dans ton cœur. Cette Parole, c’est le message de la foi que nous proclamons. En effet, si de ta bouche, tu affirmes que Jésus est Seigneur, si, dans ton cœur, tu crois que Dieu l’a ressuscité d’entre les morts, alors tu seras sauvé. Car c’est avec le cœur que l’on croit pour devenir juste, c’est avec la bouche que l’on affirme sa foi pour parvenir au salut. En effet, l’Écriture dit : Quiconque met en lui sa foi ne connaîtra pas la honte. Ainsi, entre les Juifs et les païens, il n’y a pas de différence: tous ont le même Seigneur, généreux envers tous ceux qui l’invoquent. En effet, quiconque invoquera le nom du Seigneur sera sauvé.

MÉDITATION
L’Évangile de ce jour nous situe au désert où Jésus-Christ, poussé par l’Esprit Saint après avoir reçu le baptême, sera tenté par le diable. Le désert, rappelons-le, est dans la Bible le lieu de privation, de mise à l’épreuve, «le lieu où une vocation se vérifie et mûrit, s’enracine profondément dans le cœur et la volonté». C’est là que la vocation prophétique du Fils de Dieu sera mise à l’épreuve, car Satan va s’évertuer à ce que Jésus renonce à la volonté de son Père. Malheureusement, le Malin, Lui qui a fait chuter Adam et Eve (Gn 2, 6), sera vaincu par le Fils de Dieu, le nouvel Adam. Oui, Dieu n’écarte pas sur notre chemin la tentation. Au contraire, il donne sa force, sa grâce pour la vaincre. Nous avons, pour ce faire, à user des mêmes moyens que Jésus : vivre de la Parole de Dieu, refuser tout signe de puissance contraire à notre mission et faire de notre vie une offrande agréable au Père.

Meditation
Paul in the second reading elevates faith above racial and ethnic spheres when he says that it makes no distinction between Jew and Greek. In our contemporary world of many different races and ethnic groups, this reading tells us that even though we are different, we share one precious treasure which makes us all one and same, and that is faith in Jesus Christ. There is no space for shame, but harmony and peace should reign because we belong to the same Lord. The Gospel shows how Jesus triumphed over temptation and how he remained truly the Son of God. Jesus won his victory by relying on the Holy Spirit and Holy Scripture. This is a lesson to all Christians: the Holy Spirit and Scripture are indeed the best weapons against the different temptations they encounter in daily life. We are told, for example, in Acts 4:8 how apostle Peter, “filled with the Holy Spirit” stood his ground boldly when faced with persecution. This shows the role of the Holy Spirit in different situations, not only in temptations but also in persecutions and many other miserable situations.

Meditation
I imagine Levi in his office at the commercial centre when he was noticed by a passerby ‘stranger’ and got an invitation, “Follow me.” Though he was engaged in a civil commitment, Jesus called him to a greater commitment of a religious nature – becoming a disciple. Another important element in this passage of the Gospel is that of Levi “leaving everything,” an element which is not found in the parallels of Mark and Matthew. By this emphasis, Luke is telling us about the cost of discipleship; it costs everything. This is further attested by this text: “So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple without giving up all that he owns” (Lk 14:33). We should be courageous like Levi and leave our comfort zones without hesitation in order to become the followers of Jesus.

Sainte Françoise Romaine, religieuse
Mariée par obéissance, Françoise (1384-1440) fut durant près de quarante ans une épouse et une mère de famille modèle. Après avoir réglé les affaires de sa maison, cette femme de l’aristocratie romaine employait le reste de son temps à prier dans les églises et à soulager les pauvres. Les visions dont elle fut favorisée ne l’empêchèrent pas de connaître l’épreuve : deux de ses trois enfants moururent et, avec son mari, elle dut subir les revers politiques de l’époque. Elle fonda en 1433 une association d’oblates, qui vivent encore aujourd’hui selon l’esprit de saint Benoît. Devenue veuve, elle fut choisie comme supérieure de leur communauté, et y passa le reste de sa vie dans une union de plus en plus profonde avec Dieu.

Lévi donna pour Jésus une grande réception dans sa maison ; il y avait là une foule nombreuse de publicains et d’autres gens attablés avec eux. Les pharisiens et les scribes de leur parti récriminaient en disant à ses disciples : « Pourquoi mangez-vous et buvez-vous avec les publicains et les pécheurs ? » Jésus leur répondit : « Ce ne sont pas les gens en bonne santé qui ont besoin du médecin, mais les malades. MÉDITATION
L’évangile de ce jour nous donne de méditer non seulement sur la vocation de Lévi, collecteur d’impôts, mais aussi de contempler l’attitude de Jésus-Christ envers les pécheurs qu’il appelle au repentir. Dans une société juive caractérisée par le mépris de certaines catégories sociales (publicains, samaritains, pécheurs, prostituées), Jésus apporte une révolution dans son agir. Il se fait proche des malheureux, des pécheurs, des rejetés ou des exclus de la société. C’est ainsi qu’il appelle le Publicain Lévi, car Il est venu manifester la bonté de Dieu envers toute personne et apporter le salut à toute l’humanité. Sa solidarité envers les pécheurs que nous sommes, exprime son amour universel en faveur de son peuple. Profitons de ce temps de grâce pour nous repentir et devenir des témoins de la miséricorde de Dieu en ce monde.

Saint Jean de Dieu, religieux
Jean Ciudad (1495-1550), fils d’un artisan portugais, fut berger, voyageur, soldat et marchand avant de se convertir à quarante-deux ans. Il créa un hôpital à Grenade et jeta les fondements d’un ordre hospitalier. Mort victime de son dévouement, il est le patron des infirmiers et des malades.

Votre jeûne se passe en disputes et querelles, en coups de poing sauvages. Ce n’est pas en jeûnant comme vous le faites aujourd’hui que vous ferez entendre là-haut votre voix. Est-ce là le jeûne qui me plaît, un jour où l’homme se rabaisse ? S’agit-il de courber la tête comme un roseau, de coucher sur le sac et la cendre ? Appelles-tu cela un jeûne, un jour agréable au Seigneur ? Le jeûne qui me plaît, n’est-ce pas ceci : faire tomber les chaînes injustes, délier les attaches du joug, rendre la liberté aux opprimés, briser tous les jougs ? N’est-ce pas partager ton pain avec celui qui a faim, accueillir chez toi les pauvres sans abri, couvrir celui que tu verras sans vêtement, ne pas te dérober à ton semblable ? Alors ta lumière jaillira comme l’aurore, et tes forces reviendront vite. Devant toi marchera ta justice, et la gloire du Seigneur fermera la marche. MÉDITATION
L’invitation au jeûne nous est lancée avec empressement par l’Église pendant ce temps de Carême. Sacrifice qui plaît à Dieu, le jeûne est un moyen spirituel qui nous rend agréable devant le Seigneur et donne sens à notre communion avec lui. Le jeûne nous ouvre également à la charité fraternelle, c’est-à-dire à la sensibilité et à la solidarité vis-à-vis de notre prochain. C’est cette forme de jeûne à laquelle le prophète Isaïe nous invite aujourd’hui : le partage avec les malheureux, la défense des sans-voix, l’option préférentielle pour les pauvres, l’attention aux plus petits et la lutte pour la justice. Puisse le Seigneur nous aider, durant toute notre vie, à faire de ce jeûne notre cheval de bataille pour un monde meilleur et le bien-être intégral de l’homme.

Gospel: Luke 9:22-25
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘The Son of Man is destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes and to be put to death, and to be raised up on the third day.’ Then to all he said: ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross every day and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, that man will save it. What gain, then, is it for a man to have won the whole world and to have lost or ruined his very self?’

Meditation
Jesus makes the first announcement of his passion and calls his disciples to accept two acts of true discipleship, which are self-denial and cross bearing. With the expression, “let him renounce himself and take up his cross every day”, Jesus stresses the importance of persistence – even when one’s life seems to be in danger – in the life of discipleship. We should understand here that self-denial is more radical than denial of other things, and this makes the road of discipleship a difficult one. A disciple is called to deny self-interests and self-fulfilment. The apostle Paul himself renounced his self-righteousness and zeal as a Jew who obeyed the Law and proudly says, “Because of the supreme advantage of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord , I count everything else as a loss.” (Phil 3:8).
