Dédicace de la Basilique du Latran

La cathédrale de l’évêque de Rome est édifiée sur le domaine qui appartenait à la famille des Laterani et où s’élevait un palais, voisin d’une caserne. L’empereur Constantin rasa celle-ci et la remplaça par la première basilique liturgique monumentale, qu’il offrit avec le palais, au pape Sylvestre vers 320. Le palais fut résidence pontificale pendant dix siècles ; la basilique, dédiée au Sauveur et en second lieu à Jean Baptiste fut appelée ‘’la mère et la tête de toutes les églises’’. Cinq conciles œcuméniques y tinrent leurs sessions.

Le poisson sera très abondant, car cette eau assainit tout ce qu’elle pénètre, et la vie apparaît en tout lieu où arrive le torrent. Au bord du torrent, sur les deux rives, toutes sortes d’arbres fruitiers pousseront ;leur feuillage ne se flétrira pas et leurs fruits ne manqueront pas. Chaque mois ils porteront des fruits nouveaux, car cette eau vient du sanctuaire. Les fruits seront une nourriture, et les feuilles un remède. »

Comme la Pâque juive était proche, Jésus monta à Jérusalem. Dans le Temple, il trouva installés les marchands de bœufs, de brebis et de colombes, et les changeurs. Il fit un fouet avec des cordes, et les chassa tous du Temple, ainsi que les brebis et les bœufs ; il jeta par terre la monnaie des changeurs, renversa leurs comptoirs, et dit aux marchands de colombes : « Enlevez cela d’ici. Cessez de faire de la maison de mon Père une maison de commerce. » Ses disciples se rappelèrent qu’il est écrit : L’amour de ta maison fera mon tourment. Des Juifs l’interpellèrent: « Quel signe peux-tu nous donner pour agir ainsi ? » Jésus leur répondit: « Détruisez ce sanctuaire, et en trois jours je le relèverai. » Les Juifs lui répliquèrent : « Il a fallu quarante-six ans pour bâtir ce sanctuaire, et toi, en trois jours tu le relèverais ! » Mais lui parlait du sanctuaire de son corps. Aussi, quand il se réveilla d’entre les morts, ses disciples se rappelèrent qu’il avait dit cela ; ils crurent à l’Écriture et à la parole que Jésus avait dite.

Tu as voulu, Seigneur, que ton Eglise de la terre soit pour nous l’annonce de la Jérusalem céleste ; accorde-nous, par cette communion, d’être ici-bas le temple de ta grâce et d’entrer un jour dans la demeure de ta gloire. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Pour le peuple d’Israël, la maison de Dieu était, et reste encore aujourd’hui, un signe visible de sa présence au milieu de son peuple. D’où la nécessité de purifier nos cœurs avant d’y accéder et l’importance d’être présents à Dieu chaque fois que nous y avons accès. Pour nous Chrétiens, Jésus est le véritable Temple de la nouvelle alliance : c’est lui la demeure de Dieu par excellence. De même que par lui et en lui le Père est venu jusqu’à nous, par lui et en lui nous avons accès auprès du Père et montons vers le Père. En lui et par lui, nous avons le rachat, le pardon des péchés. Jésus Christ est le lieu de la rencontre entre l’homme et Dieu. Que notre révérence à l’égard du temple de Dieu nous aide à bien soigner le sanctuaire de nos cœurs afin qu’il soit une demeure digne de notre Seigneur.

Dedication of the Lateran Basilica (c.324)

The Lateran Basilica was built by the Emperor Constantine on the Lateran Hill in Rome in about 324. In honour of the basilica, “the mother and head of all the churches of the City and the World,” the feast has been extended to the whole Roman Rite as a sign of unity and love towards the See of Peter.

Meditation
To the people of Israel, the house of God was, and still is, a visible sign of his presence among his people. Hence there is a need to purify our hearts before going into the house of God. For Christians, Jesus is the true Temple of the New Covenant. He is the abode of God par excellence. Just as the Father came to us, through him, we also have access to the Father through him. In him and through him, we have redemption and the forgiveness of sins. Jesus Christ is the meeting place between the human being and God. May our reverence for the temple of God help us to care for the sanctuary of our hearts so that it may be a dwelling place worthy of our Lord.

Son monastère battait de l’aile avec seulement six moines quand ceux-ci le choisirent comme abbé. En quelque temps, le monastère de Nogent ans la Marne devint l’un des plus florissants. Après l’insistance de l’évêque de Reims, il accepte de devenir évêque d’Amiens. Ce qui lui en coûta en quelque sorte. Car la plupart des membres du clergé était à la solde des grands seigneurs.

Première lecture : Sg 1, 1-7
Aimez la justice, vous qui gouvernez la terre, ayez sur le Seigneur des pensées droites, cherchez-le avec un cœur simple, car il se laisse trouver par ceux qui ne le mettent pas à l’épreuve, il se manifeste à ceux qui ne refusent pas de croire en lui. Les pensées tortueuses éloignent de Dieu, et sa puissance confond les insensés qui la provoquent. Car la Sagesse ne peut entrer dans une âme qui veut le mal, ni habiter dans un corps asservi au péché. L’Esprit saint, éducateur des hommes, fuit l’hypocrisie, il se détourne des projets sans intelligence, quand survient l’injustice, il la confond. Méditation Dans l´Évangile d´aujourd´hui, le Christ nous demande de faire attention afin de ne pas être objet de chute pour les autres : il nous exhorte de faire tout notre possible pour ne pas entrainer les autres dans le péché. Il nous demande, en plus, de pardonner sans cesse à quiconque nous a offensés, surtout s’il prend le courage de venir nous demander pardon. Enfin, il nous révèle l’importance de la foi en Dieu qui nous obtient et nous permet d’accomplir même des choses impossibles aux yeux des hommes. Comme les Apôtres, demandons à Jésus d’augmenter notre foi afin de savoir discerner la volonté de Dieu en toute chose. Efforçons-nous aussi à garder la foi en Dieu surtout dans les moments de dures épreuves.

Many of them date from the so-called ‘Age of the Saints’ in the fifth and sixth centuries, and often have connections with the Christian communities in Cornwall, Ireland, Scotland and Brittany.

Love virtue, you who are judges on earth, let honesty prompt your thinking about the Lord, seek him in simplicity of heart; since he is to be found by those who do not put him to the test, he shows himself to those who do not distrust him. But selfish intentions divorce from God; and Omnipotence, put to the test, confounds the foolish. No, Wisdom will never make its way into a crafty soul nor stay in a body that is in debt to sin; the holy spirit of instruction shuns deceit, it stands aloof from reckless purposes, is taken aback when iniquity appears. Wisdom is a spirit, a friend to man, though she will not pardon the words of a blasphemer, since God sees into the innermost parts of him, truly observes his heart, and listens to his tongue. He asks us to forgive continually anyone who has offended us, especially if he takes the courage to come and ask us for forgiveness. Finally, he reveals to us the importance of faith in God, which enables us to accomplish even things impossible in the eyes of men. Like the apostles, let us ask Jesus to increase our faith so that we can discern God’s will in all things. Let us strive to keep our faith in God, especially in times of severe trial.
