St. Luke, Evangelist
Red
He was a Greek doctor who converted to Christianity. He was a companion of the Apostle Paul, and wrote his Gospel in accordance with Paul’s teaching. He also wrote the Acts of the Apostles, which narrates the early history of the Church up to Paul’s first stay in Rome. As a Greek, he takes care to explain to Gentile readers Jewish customs and the meaning of Hebrew words.
Entrance Antiphon: Is 52: 7
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings glad tidings of peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation!
Collect
Lord God, who chose Saint Luke to reveal by his preaching and writings the mystery of your love for the poor, grant that those who already glory in your name may persevere as one heart and one soul and that all nations may merit to see your salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: 2 Timothy 4:10-17
Demas has deserted me for love of this life and gone to Thessalonika, Crescens has gone to Galatia and Titus to Dalmatia; only Luke is with me. Get Mark to come and bring him with you; I find him a useful helper in my work. I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus. When you come, bring the cloak I left with Carpus in Troas, and the scrolls, especially the parchment ones. Alexander the coppersmith has done me a lot of harm; the Lord will repay him for what he has done. Be on your guard against him yourself, because he has been bitterly contesting everything that we say. The first time I had to present my defence, there was not a single witness to support me. Every one of them deserted me – may they not be held accountable for it. But the Lord stood by me and gave me power, so that through me the whole message might be proclaimed for all the pagans to hear; and so I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.

R/ Your friends, O Lord, make known the glorious splendour of your reign.

Gospel : Luke 10:1-9
The Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him, in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself was to visit. He said to them, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest. Start off now, but remember, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Carry no purse, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road. Whatever house you go into, let your first words be, “Peace to this house!” And if a man of peace lives there, your peace will go and rest on him; if not, it will come back to you. Stay in the same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the labourer deserves his wages; do not move from house to house. Whenever you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is set before you. Cure those in it who are sick, and say, “The kingdom of God is very near to you.”’
Prayer over the Offerings
Grant through your heavenly gifts that we may serve you in freedom of heart, we pray, O Lord, so that the offerings we make on the feast day of Saint Luke may bring us healing and give us glory. Through Christ our Lord.

The Lord sent out disciples to proclaim throughout the towns: The kingdom of God is at hand for you.
Prayer after Communion
Grant, we pray, almighty God, that what we have received from your holy altar may sanctify us and make us strong in the faith of the Gospel which Saint Luke proclaimed. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Today, Jesus teaches us about the emptiness and vanity of our human struggles and toils for wealth as a means to attain happiness. To be happy, Jesus exhorts us to be detached from material possessions, to guard against greed. We ought to store up treasures for ourselves in heaven by being charitable on earth with the blessings we receive from the Lord. Therefore, put your trust in God’s providence today and forever and not in material wealth.

Ce laïc était médecin. Ami de Paul, il l’accompagna durant une partie de ses voyages. La tradition lui attribue le troisième évangile et les Actes des Apôtres. Ces deux livres forment les volets d’un diptyque. L’Evangile présente Jésus comme le Sauveur universel, et sa vie comme une montée vers Jérusalem où, par sa mort et sa résurrection, il accomplit sa mission de salut. Dans les Actes des Apôtres, l’Esprit Saint, envoyé par le Christ glorifié, provoque la diffusion de l’Evangile à partir de Jérusalem et l’expansion d’une Eglise ouverte à tous, aux païens comme aux Juifs. La personnalité de Luc se révèle peut-être à travers son œuvre dont les thèmes dominants sont la miséricorde et l’amour des pauvres, la prière et la joie.

Comme il est beau de voir courir sur les montagnes le messager qui annonce la paix, le messager de la Bonne Nouvelle, qui annonce le salut.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui as choisi saint Luc pour révéler, par sa parole et ses écrits, le mystère de ton amour envers les pauvres, accorde à ceux qui se réclament de ton nom d’être un seul cœur et une seule âme, et, à tous les peuples du monde, la grâce de voir ton salut. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : 2 Tm 4, 10-17b
Bien-aimé, Démas m’a abandonné par amour de ce monde, et il est parti pour Thessalonique. Crescent est parti pour la Galatie, et Tite pour la Dalmatie. Luc est seul avec moi. Amène Marc avec toi, il m’est très utile pour le ministère. J’ai envoyé Tychique à Éphèse. En venant, rapporte-moi le manteau que j’ai laissé à Troas chez Carpos. Apporte-moi aussi mes livres, surtout les parchemins. Alexandre, le forgeron, m’a fait beaucoup de mal. Le Seigneur lui rendra selon ses œuvres. Toi aussi, prends garde à cet individu, car il s’est violemment opposé à nos paroles. La première fois que j’ai présenté ma défense, personne ne m’a soutenu : tous m’ont abandonné. Que cela ne soit pas retenu contre eux. Le Seigneur, lui, m’a assisté. Il m’a rempli de force pour que, par moi, la proclamation de l’Évangile s’accomplisse jusqu’au bout et que toutes les nations l’entendent.

R/ Que tes fidèles, Seigneur, disent la gloire de ton règne.
1. Que tes œuvres, Seigneur, te rendent grâce et que tes fidèles te bénissent ! Ils diront la gloire de ton règne, ils parleront de tes exploits,
2. Ils annonceront aux hommes tes exploits, la gloire et l’éclat de ton règne : ton règne, un règne éternel, ton empire, pour les âges des âges.

Evangile : Lc 10, 1-9
En ce temps-là, parmi les disciples, le Seigneur en désigna encore soixante-douze, et il les envoya deux par deux, en avant de lui, en toute ville et localité où lui-même allait se rendre. Il leur dit : « La moisson est abondante, mais les ouvriers sont peu nombreux. Priez donc le maître de la moisson d’envoyer des ouvriers pour sa moisson. Allez ! Voici que je vous envoie comme des agneaux au milieu des loups. Ne portez ni bourse, ni sac, ni sandales, et ne saluez personne en chemin. Mais dans toute maison où vous entrerez, dites d’abord : ‘Paix à cette maison.’ S’il y a là un ami de la paix, votre paix ira reposer sur lui ; sinon, elle reviendra sur vous. Restez dans cette maison, mangeant et buvant ce que l’on vous sert ; car l’ouvrier mérite son salaire. Ne passez pas de maison en maison. Dans toute ville où vous entrerez et où vous serez accueillis, mangez ce qui vous est présenté. Guérissez les malades qui s’y trouvent et dites-leur : ‘Le règne de Dieu s’est approché de vous.’ »
Prière sur les offrandes
Par ta grâce divine, accorde-nous Seigneur, de te servir avec un cœur libéré, afin que nos offrandes, présentées en la fête de saint Luc, nous procurent la guérison et la gloire. Par Jésus.

Le Seigneur envoya ses disciples pour annoncer dans les villes: « Le Règne de Dieu est arrivé jusqu’à vous. »
Prière après la communion
Permets, Dieu tout-Puissant, que le sacrement reçu à ton autel nous sanctifie: qu’il nous donne de croire plus fermement à la Bonne Nouvelle que saint Luc nous a transmise. Par Jésus.
Méditation
« Il m’a rempli de force pour que, par moi, la proclamation de l’Évangile s’accomplisse jusqu’au bout et que toutes les nations l’entendent ». Saint Paul dit son ambition, il veut que l’Evangile atteigne les limites du monde. Pour ce faire, il travaille avec beaucoup d’autres à la propagation de l’évangile. Saint Luc est dans ce groupe et apprend énormément auprès de lui. En s’ouvrant avec humilité à une personne dotée de talents, on a la chance d’accroître ses capacités. Disciple très réceptif, Luc contribuera fortement lui aussi à l’annonce de la Bonne Nouvelle. Le Règne de Dieu s’est manifesté en lui et autour de lui car grâce à sa mission beaucoup d’hommes deviennent des amis de la paix de Dieu.

First reading: Isaiah 53:10-11
The Lord has been pleased to crush his servant with suffering. If he offers his life in atonement, he shall see his heirs, he shall have a long life and through him what the Lord wishes will be done. 1. The word of the Lord is faithful and all his works to be trusted. The Lord loves justice and right and fills the earth with his love.

Second reading : Hebrews 4:14-16
Since in Jesus, the Son of God, we have the supreme high priest who has gone through to the highest heaven, we must never let go of the faith that we have professed. For it is not as if we had a high priest who was incapable of feeling our weaknesses with us; but we have one who has been tempted in every way that we are, though he is without sin. Let us be confident, then, in approaching the throne of grace, that we shall have mercy from him and find grace when we are in need of help.

Gospel : Mark 10:35-45
James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached Jesus. ‘Master,’ they said to him, ‘we want you to do us a favour.’ He said to them, ‘What is it you want me to do for you?’ They said to him, ‘Allow us to sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory.’ ‘You do not know what you are asking,’ Jesus said to them. ‘Can you drink the cup that I must drink, or be baptised with the baptism with which I must be baptised?’ They replied, ‘We can.’ Jesus said to them, ‘The cup that I must drink you shall drink, and with the baptism with which I must be baptised you shall be baptised, but as for seats at my right hand or my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been allotted.’ When the other ten heard this they began to feel indignant with James and John, so Jesus called them to him and said to them, ‘You know that among the pagans their so-called rulers lord it over them, and their great men make their authority felt. Meditation
Discipleship is all about following in the master’s footsteps. Jesus warns James and John in today’s Gospel about the baptism of blood they were to face as a consequence of being his disciples. Tradition holds that the two were faithful to the Lord till the very end of their lives. We are therefore called today to be ready and faithful in our course of discipleship which entails renouncing the world. We pray that God will grant our desire to seek to remain close and faithful to him.

1ère lecture :Is 53, 10-11
Parole du Seigneur au roi Cyrus, qu’il a consacré, qu’il a pris par la main, pour lui soumettre les nations et désarmer les rois, pour lui ouvrir les portes à deux battants, car aucune porte ne restera fermée : « A cause de mon serviteur Jacob et d’Israël mon élu, je t’ai appelé par ton nom, je t’ai décerné un titre, alors que tu ne me connaissais pas. 2. Dieu veille sur ceux qui le craignent, qui mettent leur espoir en son amour, pour les délivrer de la mort, les garder en vie aux jours de famine.

2ème lecture : He 4, 14-16
Frères, en Jésus, le Fils de Dieu, nous avons le grand prêtre par excellence, celui qui a traversé les cieux ; tenons donc ferme l’affirmation de notre foi. En effet, nous n’avons un grand prêtre incapable de compatir à nos faiblesses , mais un grand prêtre éprouvé en toutes choses, à notre ressemblance, excepté le péché. Avançons-nous donc avec assurance vers le Trône de la grâce, pour obtenir miséricorde et recevoir, en temps voulu, la grâce de son secours.
Acclamation :
Alléluia. Alléluia. Le Fils de l’homme est venu pour servir, et donner sa vie en rançon pour la multitude. Alléluia. (cf. Mc 10, 45)

En ce temps-là, Jacques et Jean, les fils de Zébédée, s’approchent de Jésus et lui disent : « Maître, ce que nous allons te demander, nous voudrions que tu le fasses pour nous. » Il leur dit : « Que voulez-vous que je fasse pour vous ? » Ils lui répondirent : « Donne-nous de siéger, l’un à ta droite et l’autre à ta gauche, dans ta gloire. » Jésus leur dit : « Vous ne savez pas ce que vous demandez. Pouvez-vous boire la coupe que je vais boire, être baptisés du baptême dans lequel je vais être plongé ? » Ils lui dirent : « Nous le pouvons. » Jésus leur dit : « La coupe que je vais boire, vous la boirez ; et vous serez baptisés du baptême dans lequel je vais être plongé. Quant à siéger à ma droite ou à ma gauche, ce n’est pas à moi de l’accorder ; il y a ceux pour qui cela est préparé. » Les dix autres, qui avaient entendu, se mirent à s’indigner contre Jacques et Jean. Jésus les appela et leur dit : « Vous le savez : ceux que l’on regarde comme chefs des nations les commandent en maîtres ; les grands leur font sentir leur pouvoir. Parmi vous, il ne doit pas en être ainsi. Celui qui veut devenir grand parmi vous sera votre serviteur. Celui qui veut être parmi vous le premier sera l’esclave de tous: car le Fils de l’homme n’est pas venu pour être servi, mais pour servir, et donner sa vie en rançon pour la multitude. »
Prière sur les offrandes
Accorde-nous, Seigneur, de te servir à cet autel en toute liberté d’esprit. Ainsi ta grâce pourra nous purifier dans le mystère que nous célébrons. Par Jésus.

Le Seigneur veille sur ceux qui le craignent, sur ceux qui espèrent son amour, pour les préserver de la mort, les garder en vie aux jours de famine.

Seigneur, fais-nous trouver des forces neuves dans cette communion aux réalités du ciel. Assure-nous tes bienfaits ici-bas et instruis-nous des richesses de ton Royaume. Par Jésus.
Méditation
« Le Fils de l’homme n’est pas venu pour être servi, mais pour servir, et donner sa vie en rançon pour la multitude ». Jésus nous montre sa Toute-Puissance par la sublimité de son humilité. Sa divinité se voit dans cette petitesse. Depuis sa naissance parmi les hommes, on le voit dans une crèche à Bethléem. Bien qu’étant le Fils unique du Seul Dieu, « en dehors de moi, il n’y a pas de Dieu », le Christ ne se glorifie pas. Il instruit d’ailleurs cette conduite à ses disciples : « Celui qui veut devenir grand parmi vous sera votre serviteur ». Le chrétien est une personne qui se sacrifie pour les autres. Il n’est pas préoccupé par son ascension mais beaucoup plus à celle des autres.

She was born in Bavaria and married the Duke of Silesia, by whom she had seven children. She lived a devout life, succouring the poor and the sick, for whom she built hostels. On the death of her husband in 1238 she entered the monastery of Trebnitz, where she died in 1243.

First reading: Romans 4:13,16-18
The promise of inheriting the world was not made to Abraham and his descendants on account of any law but on account of the righteousness which consists in faith. That is why what fulfils the promise depends on faith, so that it may be a free gift and be available to all of Abraham’s descendants, not only those who belong to the Law but also those who belong to the faith of Abraham who is the father of all of us. As scripture says: I have made you the ancestor of many nations – Abraham is our father in the eyes of God, in whom he put his faith, and who brings the dead to life and calls into being what does not exist. Though it seemed Abraham’s hope could not be fulfilled, he hoped and he believed, and through doing so he did become the father of many nations exactly as he had been promised: Your descendants will be as many as the stars.

R/ The Lord remembers his covenant forever.
1. O children of Abraham, his servant, O sons of the Jacob he chose. He, the Lord, is our God: his judgements prevail in all the earth.

Gospel : Luke 12:8-12
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘I tell you, if anyone openly declares himself for me in the presence of men, the Son of Man will declare himself for him in the presence of the angels. But the man who disowns me in the presence of men will be disowned in the presence of God’s angels. Everyone who says a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. When they take you before synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how to defend yourselves or what to say, because when the time comes, the Holy Spirit will teach you what you must say.’
Prayer over the Offerings
Accept, O Lord, the prayers of your faithful with the sacrificial offerings, that, through these acts of devotedness, we may pass over to the glory of heaven. Through Christ our Lord.

The rich suffer want and go hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no blessing.
Prayer after Communion
We entreat your majesty most humbly, O Lord, that, as you feed us with the nourishment which comes from the most holy Body and Blood of your Son, so you may make us sharers of his divine nature. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
It is a Christian duty to bear witness to Christ wherever we find ourselves. Those who confess Jesus will be welcomed into the kingdom of God. The Holy Spirit will lead them, teach them, and give them words for their defence at difficult moments. However, we are also called to guard against the sin against the Holy Spirit, which is rejection of the presence and saving power of God working in Jesus Christ. Let us be loyal, faithful and acknowledge Jesus as the salvation of the world.
