St. Edward the Confessor
(1003 – 1066)
Green
He became King of England in 1042. He was regarded as a saint during his lifetime, renowned for his generosity to the Church and to the poor and for his readiness to listen to his subjects’ grievances. He died on 5th January 1066.

May your grace, O Lord, we pray, at all times go before us and follow after and make us always determined to carry out good works. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Romans 2:1-11
No matter who you are, if you pass judgement you have no excuse. In judging others you condemn yourself, since you behave no differently from those you judge. We know that God condemns that sort of behaviour impartially: and when you judge those who behave like this while you are doing exactly the same, do you think you will escape God’s judgement? Or are you abusing his abundant goodness, patience and toleration, not realising that this goodness of God is meant to lead you to repentance? Your stubborn refusal to repent is only adding to the anger God will have towards you on that day of anger when his just judgements will be made known. He will repay each one as his works deserve. For those who sought renown and honour and immortality by always doing good there will be eternal life; for the unsubmissive who refused to take truth for their guide and took depravity instead, there will be anger and fury. Pain and suffering will come to every human being who employs himself in evil – Jews first, but Greeks as well; renown, honour and peace will come to everyone who does good – Jews first, but Greeks as well. God has no favourites.

Meditation
We show that we love God when we practice justice and love especially to the weak and not by a foolish observance of religious rules like the Pharisees. Let us be people who put justice before sacrifice, love of God and neighbour before an external display of religious practices. Above all, we are called to be like Jesus: meek and humble of heart, instead of judging others, for in so doing we condemn ourselves. God will repay each of us according to his/her deeds.

Aussi éminent par sa piété que par sa générosité, il sut se faire l’ami des petites gens et fut vite l’objet d’un culte populaire. Mais, en réalité, il n’était pas fait pour être roi.

Première Lecture : Romains 2,1-11.
De même, toi, l’homme qui juge, tu n’as aucune excuse, qui que tu sois : quand tu juges les autres, tu te condamnes toi-même car tu fais comme eux, toi qui juges. Or, nous savons que Dieu juge selon la vérité ceux qui font de telles choses. Et toi, l’homme qui juge ceux qui font de telles choses et les fais toi-même, penses-tu échapper au jugement de Dieu ? Ou bien méprises-tu ses trésors de bonté, de longanimité et de patience, en refusant de reconnaître que cette bonté de Dieu te pousse à la conversion ? Méditation « Quand tu juges les autres, tu te condamnes toi-même car tu fais comme eux, toi qui juges ». La foi n’équivaut jamais à une quantité d’œuvres à accomplir pour s’assurer une quelconque garantie. Elle ne tient pas en un nombre déterminé d’actes à exécuter pour se reposer enfin. C’est un vivre ensemble avec Dieu où le croyant à toujours à faire pour se parfaire lui-même, de telle sorte qu’il ne trouvera pas assez de temps pour critiquer les autres. Quand on n’arrive pas à accomplir tout son devoir à quoi bon s’en prendre aux retardataires et aux paresseux ? Jésus invite les docteurs de la Loi à s’appliquer et à voir que le Maître de l’histoire « rendra à chacun selon ses œuvres ». Il ne faut donc pas continuer à vivre dans le mal comme s’il n’y aura pas de dénouement

St. Wilfrid
(634 – 709)
Green
Wilfrid was born in Northumbria in 634. He took part in the Synod of Whitby (664), where he promoted Rome’s way of calculating the date of Easter, and the Roman form of Christian worship. He was missionary, evangelist, monk and bishop. He died in Oundle, in October 709.

I am not ashamed of the Good News: it is the power of God saving all who have faith – Jews first, but Greeks as well – since this is what reveals the justice of God to us: it shows how faith leads to faith, or as scripture says: The upright man finds life through faith. The anger of God is being revealed from heaven against all the impiety and depravity of men who keep truth imprisoned in their wickedness. For what can be known about God is perfectly plain to them since God himself has made it plain. Ever since God created the world his everlasting power and deity – however invisible – have been there for the mind to see in the things he has made. That is why such people are without excuse: they knew God and yet refused to honour him as God or to thank him; instead, they made nonsense out of logic and their empty minds were darkened. The more they called themselves philosophers, the more stupid they grew, until they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for a worthless imitation, for the image of mortal man, of birds, of quadrupeds and reptiles. That is why God left them to their filthy enjoyments and the practices with which they dishonour their own bodies, since they have given up divine truth for a lie and have worshipped and served creatures instead of the creator, who is blessed for ever. Meditation
Sometimes we are ashamed of expressing the fact that we are Christians for fear of being laughed at. Sometimes we refuse or reject the truth or chose not to stand for the truth because we want to protect our personal interest. In the gospel the Pharisee remains materialistic and refuses to recognise the presence of the TRUTH. Jesus then teaches us to be people who are pure within. Purity comes through the Good News, the one Paul is not ashamed of: it is the power of God saving all who have faith. We are called to be people of faith.

Il aida ainsi à la fondation de l’Eglise anglo-saxonne. Il fut tué lors d’une bataille à Hatfield et sa mort fut considérée comme un martyre.

Première lecture : Romains 1, 16-25
Frères, je n’ai pas honte de l’Évangile, car il est puissance de Dieu pour le salut de quiconque est devenu croyant, le Juif d’abord, et le païen. Dans cet Évangile se révèle la justice donnée par Dieu, celle qui vient de la foi et conduit à la foi, comme il est écrit : Celui qui est juste par la foi, vivra. Or la colère de Dieu se révèle du haut du ciel contre toute impiété et contre toute injustice des hommes qui, par leur injustice, font obstacle à la vérité. En effet, ce que l’on peut connaître de Dieu est clair pour eux, car Dieu le leur a montré clairement. Depuis la création du monde, on peut voir avec l’intelligence, à travers les œuvres de Dieu, ce qui de lui est invisible: sa puissance éternelle et sa divinité. Ils n’ont donc pas d’excuse, puisque, malgré leur connaissance de Dieu, ils ne lui ont pas rendu la gloire et l’action de grâce que l’on doit à Dieu. Ils se sont laissé aller à des raisonnements sans valeur, et les ténèbres ont rempli leurs cœurs privés d’intelligence. Ces soi-disant sages sont devenus fous ; ils ont échangé la gloire du Dieu impérissable contre des idoles représentant l’être humain périssable ou bien des volatiles, des quadrupèdes et des reptiles. Voilà pourquoi, à cause des convoitises de leurs cœurs, Dieu les a livrés à l’impureté, de sorte qu’ils déshonorent eux-mêmes leur corps. Ils ont échangé la vérité de Dieu contre le mensonge ; ils ont vénéré la création et lui ont rendu un culte plutôt qu’à son Créateur, lui qui est béni éternellement. Amen

« Celui qui est juste par la foi, vivra ». La personne qui vit dans la foi est celle qui est beaucoup plus portée à soigner sont fort intérieur. S’attirer des honneurs ne l’intéresse pas. Elle se souvient de la grande critique des prophètes qui disent : « Ce peuple m’honore des lèvres mais son cœur est loin de moi ». La foi est enracinée dans le cœur, elle est loin d’être une question de superficialité. Le croyant véritable se préoccupe essentiellement de ce qui relève du cœur, de ce qui touche Dieu, de ce que Dieu regarde et considère. La méchanceté et les idolâtries sont les choses les plus abominables à l’actif des « soi-disant sages » ; ils aiment agir dans la fausseté et en cachette.

St. Josaphat
(c.1580 – 1623)

He was born in Ukraine of Orthodox parents. Josaphat joined the first monastery of the order of St Basil to be united to the Catholic Church: he was the first person to do so. He was ordained priest and, eventually and reluctantly, appointed bishop of Polotsk in 1617. Josaphat was murdered by a mob in 1623 while on a pastoral visit to Vitebsk.
Entrance Antiphon :
Because of the Lord’s covenant and the ancestral laws, the Saints of God persevered in loving brotherhood, for there was always one spirit in them, and one faith.

Stir up in your Church, we pray, O Lord, the Spirit that filled Saint Josaphat as he laid down his life for the sheep, so that through his intercession, we too may be strengthened by the same Spirit and not be afraid to lay down our life for others. First reading: Wisdom 13:1-9
Naturally stupid are all men who have not known God and who, from the good things that are seen, have not been able to discover Him-who-is, or, by studying the works, have failed to recognise the Artificer. Fire however, or wind, or the swift air, the sphere of the stars, impetuous water, heaven’s lamps, are what they have held to be the gods who govern the world. If, charmed by their beauty, they have taken things for gods, let them know how much the Lord of these excels them, since the very Author of beauty has created them. And if they have been impressed by their power and energy, let them deduce from these how much mightier is he that has formed them, since through the grandeur and beauty of the creatures we may, by analogy, contemplate their Author. Small blame, however, attaches to these men, for perhaps they only go astray in their search for God and their eagerness to find him; living among his works, they strive to comprehend them and fall victim to appearances, seeing so much beauty. It will be the same as it was in Lot’s day: people were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, but the day Lot left Sodom, God rained fire and brimstone from heaven and it destroyed them all. It will be the same when the day comes for the Son of Man to be revealed. When that day comes, anyone on the housetop, with his possessions in the house, must not come down to collect them, nor must anyone in the fields turn back either. Remember Lot’s wife. Anyone who tries to preserve his life will lose it; and anyone who loses it will keep it safe. I tell you, on that night two will be in one bed: one will be taken, the other left; two women will be grinding corn together: one will be taken, the other left.’ The disciples interrupted. ‘Where, Lord?’ they asked. May this heavenly table, O Lord, bestow on us a spirit of fortitude and peace, so that, following Saint Josaphat’s example, we may willingly spend our lives working for the honour and unity of the Church. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
We are gradually moving towards the end of the liturgical year, and the sacred texts that the Church proposes to us speak of end times when Christ will return to judge the earth. Jesus shows us that disorderly attachment to the things of this world and seeking to preserve earthly life will do us no good. Only one thing is necessary: to surrender to the will of God and to keep our eyes fixed on the Kingdom of our Lord. Let us not be like the contemporaries of Noah and Lot. They received the warning, but they refused to listen and believe. Let us trust in God and ask him for the grace to be attentive to his word and to put it into practice.
