St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus
(1873 – 1897)
White
She was born in France on 2nd January, 1873 and entered the Carmel of Lisieux in 1888. Though her faith was seriously tested by sickness she grew in sanctity. She died at the age of 24 in 1897 with the following words: “I am not dying, I am entering life”. Her example of holiness has been received with great enthusiasm by all the faithful and even outside Christianity.
Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Deut 32: 10-12
The Lord led her and taught her, and kept her as the apple of his eye. Like an eagle spreading its wings he took her up and bore her on his shoulders. The Lord alone was her guide.
Collect
O God, who open your Kingdom to those who are humble and to little ones, lead us to follow trustingly in the little way of Saint Thérèse, so that through her intercession, we may see your eternal glory revealed. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Baruch 1:15-22
Integrity belongs to the Lord our God; to us the look of shame we wear today, to us, the people of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem, to our kings and princes, our priests, our prophets, as to our ancestors, because we have sinned in the sight of the Lord, have disobeyed him, and have not listened to the voice of the Lord our God telling us to follow the commandments which the Lord had ordained for us. From the day when the Lord brought our ancestors out of the land of Egypt until today we have been disobedient to the Lord our God, we have been disloyal, refusing to listen to his voice. And so the disasters, and the curse which the Lord pronounced through his servant Moses the day he brought our fathers out of Egypt to give us a land where milk and honey flow, have seized on us, disasters we experience today. Despite all the words of those prophets whom he sent us, we have not listened to the voice of the Lord our God, but, each following the dictates of his evil heart, we have taken to serving alien gods, and doing what is displeasing to the Lord our God.

R/ Rescue us, O Lord, for the glory of your name.
1. O God, the nations have invaded your land, they have profaned your holy temple. They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins. They have handed over the bodies of your servants as food to feed the birds of heaven and the flesh of your faithful to the beasts of the earth.
2. They have poured out blood like water in Jerusalem; no one is left to bury the dead. We have become the taunt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those who surround us. How long, O Lord? Will you be angry for ever; how long will your anger burn like fire?
3. Do not hold the guilt of our fathers against us. Let your compassion hasten to meet us; we are left in the depths of distress.

Prayer after Communion
May the Sacrament we have received, O Lord, kindle in us the force of that love with which Saint Thérèse dedicated herself to you and longed to obtain your mercy for all. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Now, we have the chance to turn away from our evil path. Faith and conversion come not only from hearing but also putting into practice the words of the Gospel. And this gospel presents us with a choice, to seek for Life or death. He who rejects any of those placed before us to announce the Good News is rejecting Jesus himself. We are called today to conversion, to a total change of life and to be listeners and doers of the Word of God.

Saint Jérôme, prêtre et docteur de l’Eglise

‘’Ignorer les Ecritures, c’est ignorer le Christ’’. Cette maxime de Jérôme (vers 340-420) est la clé de sa vie, toute consacrée à traduire et à commenter la Bible. Venu à Rome pour faire ses études, le jeune Dalmate s’y enthousiasme pour la vie de l’esprit. Après un essai de vie érémitique en Orient, il est ordonné prêtre à Antioche. Il compose une nouvelle traduction latine de la Bible, appelée à devenir en Occident : la ‘’Vulgate’’. Il achève sa vie à Bethléem, auprès des saintes femmes qu’il a formées à la vie monastique.

Que les paroles de Dieu soient toujours sur tes lèvres ; médite-les jour et nuit, veille à les accomplir en tout ce qu’elles contiennent : alors ta vie prendra sens et valeur.
Prière d’ouverture
Dieu qui as donné à saint Jérôme de goûter la sainte Écriture et d’en vivre intensément, fais que ton peuple soit davantage nourri de ta Parole et trouve en elle une source de vie. Par Jésus Christ.
Première lecture : Ne 8, 1-4a.5-6.7b-12
En ces jours-là, tout le peuple se rassembla comme un seul homme sur la place située devant la porte des Eaux. On demanda au scribe Esdras d’apporter le livre de la loi de Moïse, que le Seigneur avait prescrite à Israël. Alors le prêtre Esdras apporta la Loi en présence de l’assemblée, composée des hommes, des femmes, et de tous les enfants en âge de comprendre. C’était le premier jour du septième mois. Esdras, tourné vers la place de la porte des Eaux, fit la lecture dans le livre, depuis le lever du jour jusqu’à midi, en présence des hommes, des femmes, et de tous les enfants en âge de comprendre : tout le peuple écoutait la lecture de la Loi. Le scribe Esdras se tenait sur une tribune de bois, construite tout exprès. Esdras ouvrit le livre ; tout le peuple le voyait, car il dominait l’assemblée. Quand il ouvrit le livre, tout le monde se mit debout. Alors Esdras bénit le Seigneur, le Dieu très grand, et tout le peuple, levant les mains, répondit : « Amen ! Amen ! » Puis ils s’inclinèrent et se prosternèrent devant le Seigneur, le visage contre terre. Les lévites expliquaient la Loi au peuple, pendant que le peuple demeurait debout sur place. Esdras lisait un passage dans le livre de la loi de Dieu, puis les lévites traduisaient, donnaient le sens, et l’on pouvait comprendre. Néhémie le gouverneur, Esdras qui était prêtre et scribe, et les lévites qui donnaient les explications, dirent à tout le peuple : « Ce jour est consacré au Seigneur votre Dieu ! Ne prenez pas le deuil, ne pleurez pas ! » Car ils pleuraient tous en entendant les paroles de la Loi. Esdras leur dit encore : « Allez, mangez des viandes savoureuses, buvez des boissons aromatisées, et envoyez une part à celui qui n’a rien de prêt. Car ce jour est consacré à notre Dieu ! Ne vous affligez pas : la joie du Seigneur est votre rempart ! » Les lévites calmaient tout le peuple en disant : « Cessez de pleurer, car ce jour est saint. Ne vous affligez pas ! » Puis tout le peuple se dispersa pour aller manger, boire, envoyer des parts à ceux qui n’avaient rien de prêt, et se livrer à de grandes réjouissances ; en effet, ils avaient compris les paroles qu’on leur avait fait entendre.
Psaume : Ps 18b (19), 8, 9, 10, 11
R/ Les préceptes du Seigneur sont droits, ils réjouissent le cœur. (Ps 18b, 9ab)
1. La loi du Seigneur est parfaite, qui redonne vie ; la charte du Seigneur est sûre, qui rend sages les simples.

En ce temps-là, parmi les disciples le Seigneur en désigna encore 72, et il les envoya deux par deux, en avant de lui, en toute ville et localité où lui-même allait se rendre. Il leur dit : « La moisson est abondante, mais les ouvriers sont peu nombreux. Priez donc le maître de la moisson d’envoyer des ouvriers pour sa moisson. Allez ! Voici que je vous envoie comme des agneaux au milieu des loups. Ne portez ni bourse, ni sac, ni sandales, et ne saluez personne en chemin. Mais dans toute maison où vous entrerez, dites d’abord : “Paix à cette maison.” S’il y a là un ami de la paix, votre paix ira reposer sur lui ; sinon, elle reviendra sur vous. Restez dans cette maison, mangeant et buvant ce que l’on vous sert ; car l’ouvrier mérite son salaire. Ne passez pas de maison en maison. Dans toute ville où vous entrerez et où vous serez accueillis, mangez ce qui vous est présenté. Guérissez les malades qui s’y trouvent et dites-leur : “Le règne de Dieu s’est approché de vous.” Mais dans toute ville où vous entrerez et où vous ne serez pas accueillis, allez sur les places et dites : “Même la poussière de votre ville, collée à nos pieds, nous l’enlevons pour vous la laisser. Toutefois, sachez-le : le règne de Dieu s’est approché.” Je vous le déclare : au dernier jour, Sodome sera mieux traitée que cette ville. »
Prière sur les offrandes
Permets, Seigneur notre Dieu, qu’après avoir accueilli ta Parole en nos cœurs, à l’exemple de saint Jérôme, nous mettions plus d’empressement à t’offrions le sacrifice du salut. Par Jésus. .

Quand tes paroles se présentaient, Seigneur, je les dévorais. Ta Parole faisait mes délices et la joie de mon cœur..
Prière après la communion
Permets, Seigneur notre Dieu, que cette communion reçue en la fête de saint Jérôme réveille le cœur de tes fidèles : attentifs aux enseignements de l’Écriture, ils verront quel chemin il faut suivre ; en le suivant, ils parviendront à la vie éternelle. Par Jésus.
Méditation
Le champ missionnaire s’étend jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre. Jésus voit l’abondance de cette moisson ainsi que le grand nombre de ceux qui seraient prêts à vivre l’évangile. « La moisson est abondante, mais les ouvriers peu nombreux ». Suis-je vraiment persuadé que la moisson est abondante ? Ne suis-je pas retissant à cet appel du Seigneur ? Le Christ, devant le manque d’ouvriers demande de prier le maître de la moisson pour qu’il envoie des ouvriers à sa moisson. Suis-je de ceux qui prient suffisamment pour les vocations ?

St. Jerome, Priest, Doctor

He was born in Dalmatia. He founded a monastery, a hospice, and a school, and settled down to the most important work of his life, the translation of the Bible into Latin, a translation which, with some revisions, is still in use today. He died at Bethlehem.

Blessed indeed is he who ponders the law of the Lord day and night: he will yield his fruit in due season.

O God, who gave the Priest Saint Jerome a living and tender love for Sacred Scripture, grant that your people may be ever more fruitfully nourished by your Word and find in it the fount of life. First reading : Nehemiah 8:1-12
When the seventh month came, all the people gathered as one man on the square before the Water Gate. They asked Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses which the Lord had prescribed for Israel. Accordingly Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, consisting of men, women, and children old enough to understand. This was the first day of the seventh month. On the square before the Water Gate, in the presence of the men and women, and children old enough to understand, he read from the book from early morning till noon; all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law. Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden dais erected for the purpose. May these holy gifts we have received, O Lord, as we rejoice in celebrating Saint Jerome, stir up the hearts of your faithful so that, attentive to sacred teachings, they may understand the path they are to follow and, by following it, obtain life everlasting. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The Kingdom of God comes in peace, and comes with peace. And so Jesus says that the first words of the disciple should be the greeting of peace. There is a true sense of comfort in knowing that rejected peace will return to the disciple. We can still hope for a sense of blessing, even when our efforts have been rejected, or are unsuccessful. The work of bringing peace to a warring world begins in the heart of a believer. From every disciple, this peace will flow out to others and dilute the hate and hostility that grows in the world.

Saints Michel, Gabriel et Raphaël, archanges

Les anges fidèles à Dieu sont envoyés aux hommes pour leur révéler les desseins de leur Créateur commun et pour les protéger des attaques des démons. Les noms des anges que l’Eglise unit dans son culte, en ce jour où fut consacrée la basilique romaine de Michel, sont tirés de la Bible. Michel, qui apparaît dans le livre de Daniel et dans l’Apocalypse, a un nom qui rappelle la transcendance de l’unique Dieu : ‘’Qui est comme Dieu ?’’ Le nom de Gabriel, qui annonce à Daniel et à la Vierge Marie comment Dieu sauvera son peuple, signifie : ‘’Dieu est fort’’. Raphaël signifie :’’Dieu guérit’’ ; il révèle, par ses interventions, la providence paternelle dont l’action s’étend à tous les hommes et répond à leur prière.

En ce temps-là, lorsque Jésus vit Nathanaël venir à lui, il déclara à son sujet : « Voici vraiment un Israélite : il n’y a pas de ruse en lui.» Nathanaël lui demande : « D’où me connais-tu ? » Jésus lui répond: « Avant que Philippe t’appelle, quand tu étais sous le figuier, je t’ai vu. » Nathanaël lui dit : « Rabbi, c’est toi le Fils de Dieu ! C’est toi le roi d’Israël ! » Jésus reprend : « Je te dis que je t’ai vu sous le figuier, et c’est pour cela que tu crois ! Déjà réconfortés par le pain du ciel, nous te supplions humblement, Seigneur : puissions-nous avec ces forces neuves, et sous la protection des anges, avancer d’un pas ferme dans la voie du salut. Par Jésus.
Méditation
« Vous verrez le ciel ouvert, et les anges de Dieu monter et descendre au-dessus du Fils de l’homme ». En célébrant les saints archanges, nous affirmons que Dieu est le « Créateur du ciel et de la terre, de l’univers visible et invisible ». Les anges sont des créatures spirituelles et non corporelles. Nous pouvons donc nous appuyer sur leur aide et leur intercession pour nous tourner vers le Seigneur. D’ailleurs, dans chaque eucharistie, ils se joignent à nous et aux saints, pour chanter d’une seule voix le Dieu trois fois saint et proclamer sa gloire. Fêter les archanges nous engage à nous inspirer de leur double fidélité : contempler et faire connaitre Dieu.

SS Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels
White
St Michael is mentioned in the Apocalypse as the leader of the heavenly host; St Gabriel appears in Daniel and was also the bearer of the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary. St Raphael in the Book of Tobit heals Tobit of his blindness. His name means God heals.
Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Ps 102: 20
Bless the Lord, all you his angels, mighty in power, fulfilling his word, and heeding his voice.

O God, who dispose in marvellous order, ministries both angelic and human, graciously grant that our life on earth may be defended by those who watch over us as they minister perpetually to you in heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14
As I watched: Thrones were set in place and one of great age took his seat. His robe was white as snow, the hair of his head as pure as wool. Having been nourished with heavenly Bread, we beseech you humbly, O Lord, that, drawing from it new strength, under the faithful protection of your Angels, we may advance boldly along the way of salvation. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The Gospel tells us about the angels of God. We profess in the Creed that we believe in God, creator of all things visible and invisible. The “invisible” refers to the spirits. The Catechism teaches that the existence of the spiritual, non-corporeal beings that Sacred Scripture usually calls “angels” is a truth of faith. With their whole beings the angels are servants and messengers of God. We thank God for these powerful beings, and unite with them to give glory to God. We must also remember to always ask for their assistance.
