Saint Etienne de Hongrie

Etienne (vers 970-1038) fut le premier roi chrétien de Hongrie. Il fit appel aux moines de Cluny pour évangéliser son royaume. En l’an 1000, il reçut du pape Sylvestre II ‘’la sainte couronne’’, qui devint le symbole de l’unité magyare. Grâce ses dons de chef, il donna à son pays une solide organisation civile et religieuse.
Antienne d’ouverture : Ps 83, 10-11
Dieu, notre bouclier, regarde: vois le visage de ton Christ. Un jour passé dans ta maison en vaut pour moi plus que mille.
Prière d’ouverture
Pour ceux qui t’aiment, Seigneur, tu as préparé des biens que l’œil ne peut voir. Répands en nos cœurs la ferveur de ta charité, afin que t’aimant en toute chose et par-dessus tout, nous obtenions de toi l’héritage promis qui surpasse tout désir. Par Jésus Christ.
Première lecture : Jg 2, 11-19
En ces jours-là, les fils d’Israël firent ce qui est mal aux yeux du Seigneur, et ils servirent les Baals. Ils abandonnèrent le Seigneur, le Dieu de leurs pères, qui les avait fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, et ils suivirent d’autres dieux parmi ceux des peuples d’alentour. Ils se prosternèrent devant eux, et ils irritèrent le Seigneur. Ils abandonnèrent le Seigneur pour servir Baal et Astarté. Alors la colère du Seigneur s’enflamma contre Israël. Il les livra aux mains des pillards, les abandonna aux ennemis qui les entouraient, et ils furent incapables de leur résister. Dans toutes leurs expéditions, la main du Seigneur était contre eux, pour leur malheur, comme il le leur avait dit, comme il en avait fait serment. Ils furent dans une très grande détresse. Alors le Seigneur suscita des juges pour les sauver de la main des pillards. Mais ils n’obéissaient pas non plus à leurs juges. Ils se prostituèrent en suivant d’autres dieux, ils se prosternèrent devant eux. Ils ne tardèrent pas à se détourner du chemin où leurs pères avaient marché en obéissant aux commandements du Seigneur ; ils n’agirent pas comme eux. Lorsque le Seigneur suscitait pour eux un juge, le Seigneur était avec le juge, et il les sauvait de la main de leurs ennemis aussi longtemps que le juge était en vie ; car le Seigneur se laissait émouvoir quand ils gémissaient sous la violence de leurs oppresseurs. Mais quand le juge était mort, ils recommençaient et poussaient la corruption plus loin que leurs pères :ils suivaient d’autres dieux, les servaient et se prosternaient devant eux ; ils ne renonçaient en rien à leurs pratiques ni à leur conduite obstinée.
Psaume : Ps 105 (106), 6.35, 36-37, 39-40, 43ab.44
Souviens-toi de nous, Seigneur, dans ta bienveillance pour ton peuple.
1. Avec nos pères, nous sommes péchés, nous avons failli et renié. Ils vont se mêler aux païens, ils apprennent leur manière d’agir.
2. Alors ils servent leurs idoles, et pour eux c’était un piège : ils offrent leurs fils et leurs filles en sacrifice aux démons.
3. De telles pratiques les souillent; ils se prostituent par de telles actions. Et le Seigneur prend feu contre son peuple : ses héritiers lui font horreur.
4. Tant de fois délivrés par Dieu, ils s’obstinent dans leur idée, Et lui regarde leur détresse quand il entend leurs cris.

Alléluia. Alléluia. Heureux les pauvres de cœur, car le royaume des Cieux est à eux ! Alléluia. (Mt 5, 3)
Évangile : Mt 19, 16-22
En ce temps-là, voici que quelqu’un s’approcha de Jésus et lui dit : «Maître, que dois-je faire de bon pour avoir la vie éternelle ? » Jésus lui dit : «Pourquoi m’interroges-tu sur ce qui est bon ? Celui qui est bon, c’est Dieu, et lui seul !Si tu veux entrer dans la vie, observe les commandements. » Il lui dit : « Lesquels ? » Jésus reprit : « Tu ne commettras pas de meurtre. Tu ne commettras pas d’adultère. Tu ne commettras pas de vol. Tu ne porteras pas de faux témoignage. Honore ton père et ta mère. Et aussi : Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même. » Le jeune homme lui dit : « Tout cela, je l’ai observé : que me manque-t-il encore? Jésus lui répondit : « Si tu veux être parfait, va, vends ce que tu possèdes, donne-le aux pauvres, et tu auras un trésor dans les cieux. Puis viens, suis-moi. » À ces mots, le jeune homme s’en alla tout triste, car il avait de grands biens.
Prière sur les offrandes
Accepte, Seigneur notre Dieu, ce que nous présentons pour cette eucharistie où s’accomplit un admirable échange. En offrant ce que tu nous as donné, puissions-nous te recevoir toi-même. Par Jésus.

Prière après la communion
Par cette eucharistie, Seigneur, tu nous as unis davantage au Christ, et nous te supplions encore. Accorde-nous de lui ressembler sur la terre et de partager sa gloire dans le ciel. Lui qui.
Méditation
La suite du Christ est exigeante. Elle requiert un dépouillement total pour ne posséder qu’un seul bien : Jésus lui-même. Le jeune homme riche est bien conscient que pour avoir la vie éternelle il faut faire un pas nécessaire vers le bien. Il cite les commandements de Dieu et se targue de les avoir accomplis. Le jeune homme riche tient Jésus pour personne ressource pour savoir davantage ce qu’il faut faire. Sa réaction à la recommandation de Jésus de tout vendre, de tout donner aux pauvres et de le suivre, prouve qu’il était formaliste. Il avait beaucoup fait mais pas suffisamment. La peine n’est pas de réaliser des œuvres mais pourquoi les réalise-t-on, pour notre bonne conscience ou pour Dieu ? La vie éternelle n’est pas un mérite de l’homme mais un don de Dieu, une grâce que nous devons Lui demander.

He was the son of a pagan father and a Christian mother. He worked hard for the conversion of his country to Christianity, setting up both episcopal sees and monasteries. He was crowned the first king of Hungary in 1001.

O God, who have prepared for those who love you good things which no eye can see, fill our hearts, we pray, with the warmth of your love, so that, loving you in all things and above all things, we may attain your promises, which surpass every human desire. First reading: Judges 2:11-19
The sons of Israel did what displeases the Lord, and served the Baals. They deserted the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods from the gods of the peoples round them. They bowed down to these; they provoked the Lord; they deserted the Lord to serve Baal and Astarte. Then the Lord’s anger flamed out against Israel. He handed them over to pillagers who plundered them; he delivered them to the enemies surrounding them, and they were not able to resist them. In every warlike venture, the hand of the Lord was there to foil them, as the Lord had warned, as the Lord had sworn to them. Thus he reduced them to dire distress. Then the Lord appointed judges for them, and rescued the men of Israel from the hands of their plunderers. But they would not listen to their judges. They prostituted themselves to other gods, and bowed down before these. Very quickly they left the path their ancestors had trodden in obedience to the orders of the Lord; they did not follow their example. When the Lord appointed judges for them, the Lord was with the judge and rescued them from the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived, for the Lord felt pity for them as they groaned under the iron grip of their oppressors. But once the judge was dead, they relapsed and behaved even worse than their ancestors. They followed other gods; they served them and bowed before them, and would not give up the practices and stubborn ways of their ancestors at all.

R/ O Lord, remember me out of the love you have for your people.
1. They failed to destroy the peoples as the Lord had given command, but instead they mingled with the nations and learned to act as they did.
2. They worshipped the idols of the nations and these became a snare to entrap them. They even offered their own sons and their daughters in sacrifice to demons.
3. So they defiled themselves by their deeds and broke their marriage bond with the Lord till his anger blazed against his people; he was filled with horror at his chosen ones.
4. Time after time he rescued them, but in their malice they dared to defy him. In spite of this he paid heed to their distress, so often as he heard their cry.

Made partakers of Christ through these Sacraments, we humbly implore your mercy, Lord, that, conformed to his image on earth, we may merit also to be his coheirs in heaven. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
Whereas the Israelites have reverted from the path followed by their ancestors, today’s Gospel speaks about a young man asking Jesus the way to eternal life. Jesus indicates the way of poverty to him which he does not accept because he is very rich. A rich person is protected by the false security of his riches. Besides, he lives only to defend his own interests. Observing the Commandments is only the first stairway that goes beyond this to a much higher level. The observance of the Commandments prepares people to be able to reach the point of giving oneself completely to one’s neighbour.

Almighty ever-living God, who assumed the Immaculate Virgin Mary, the Mother of your Son, body and soul into heavenly glory, grant, we pray, that, always attentive to the things that are above, we may merit to be sharers of her glory. First reading: Apocalypse 11:19, 12:1-6, 10
The sanctuary of God in heaven opened and the ark of the covenant could be seen inside it. Then came flashes of lightning, peals of thunder and an earthquake, and violent hail. Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, adorned with the sun, standing on the moon, and with the twelve stars on her head for a crown. She was pregnant, and in labour, crying aloud in the pangs of childbirth. Then a second sign appeared in the sky, a huge red dragon which had seven heads and ten horns, and each of the seven heads crowned with a coronet. Second reading: 1 Corinthians 15:20-26
Christ has been raised from the dead, the first-fruits of all who have fallen asleep. Death came through one man and in the same way the resurrection of the dead has come through one man. Just as all men die in Adam, so all men will be brought to life in Christ; but all of them in their proper order: Christ as the first-fruits and then, after the coming of Christ, those who belong to him. Gospel: Luke 1:39-56
Mary set out and went as quickly as she could to a town in the hill country of Judah. She went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. Now as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She gave a loud cry and said, ‘Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord? For the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.’And Mary said: ‘My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit exults in God my saviour; because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid. Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name, and his mercy reaches from age to age for those who fear him. He has shown the power of his arm, he has routed the proud of heart. He has pulled down princes from their thrones and exalted the lowly. The hungry he has filled with good things, the rich sent empty away. He has come to the help of Israel his servant, mindful of his mercy – according to the promise he made to our ancestors – of his mercy to Abraham and to his descendants for ever. Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then went back home.

May this oblation, our tribute of homage, rise up to you, O Lord, and, through the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, whom you assumed into heaven, may our hearts, aflame with the fire of love, constantly long for you. Through Christ our Lord.

All generations will call me blessed, for he who is mighty has done great things for me.
Prayer after Communion
Having received the Sacrament of salvation, we ask you to grant, O Lord, that, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom you assumed into heaven, we may be brought to the glory of the resurrection. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to us that enables us to know and experience the indwelling presence of God and the power of His Kingdom. Mary accepts her mission with uncompromising faith and obedience, acting with unwavering trust and faith because she believes that God would fulfil the word He has spoken. To become the Mother of the Saviour, God enriched Mary with gifts to enable her to assume this awesome role. Mary’s faith and obedience is the key that can enable us to unlock the power and grace of God’s kingdom in our personal lives. She shows us that when God commands, He also gives us the grace, strength, and means to respond. All too often we are too distracted to listen or simply resist.

Prière d’ouverture
Dieu éternel et tout-puissant, toi qui as fait monter jusqu’à la gloire du ciel, avec son âme et son corps, Marie, la Vierge immaculée, mère de ton Fils: Fais que nous demeurions attentifs aux choses d’en haut pour obtenir de partager sa gloire. Par Jésus Christ.
Première lecture : Ap 11, 19a ; 12, 1-6a.10ab
Le sanctuaire de Dieu, qui est dans le ciel, s’ouvrit, et l’arche de son Alliance apparut dans le Sanctuaire. Un grand signe apparut dans le ciel : une Femme, ayant le soleil pour manteau, la lune sous les pieds, et sur la tête une couronne de douze étoiles. Elle est enceinte, elle crie, dans les douleurs et la torture d’un enfantement. Un autre signe apparut dans le ciel : un grand dragon, rouge feu, avec sept têtes et dix cornes, et, sur chacune des sept têtes, un diadème. Sa queue, entraînant le tiers des étoiles du ciel, les précipita sur la terre. Le Dragon vint se poster devant la femme qui allait enfanter, afin de dévorer l’enfant dès sa naissance. Or, elle mit au monde un fils, un enfant mâle, celui qui sera le berger de toutes les nations, les conduisant avec un sceptre de fer. L’enfant fut enlevé jusqu’auprès de Dieu et de son Trône, et la Femme s’enfuit au désert, où Dieu lui a préparé une place. Alors j’entendis dans le ciel une voix forte, qui proclamait : « Maintenant voici le salut, la puissance et le règne de notre Dieu, voici le pouvoir de son Christ ! » – Parole du Seigneur.
Psaume : 44, (45), 11-12a, 12b-13, 14-15a, 15b-16
R/ Debout, à la droite du Seigneur, se tient la reine, toute parée d’or. (cf. Ps 44, 10b)
1. Écoute, ma fille, regarde et tends l’oreille ; oublie ton peuple et la maison de ton père : le roi sera séduit par ta beauté.
2. Il est ton Seigneur : prosterne-toi devant lui. Alors, les plus riches du peuple, chargés de présents, quêteront ton sourire.
3. Fille de roi, elle est là, dans sa gloire, vêtue d’étoffes d’or ; on la conduit, toute parée, vers le roi.
4. Des jeunes filles, ses compagnes, lui font cortège ; on les conduit parmi les chants de fête : elles entrent au palais du roi.
Deuxième lecture: 1 Co 15, 20-27a
Frères, le Christ est ressuscité d’entre les morts, lui, premier ressuscité parmi ceux qui se sont endormis. Car, la mort étant venue par un homme, c’est par un homme aussi que vient la résurrection des morts. En effet, de même que tous les hommes meurent en Adam, de même c’est dans le Christ que tous recevront la vie, mais chacun à son rang : en premier, le Christ, et ensuite, lors du retour du Christ, ceux qui lui appartiennent. Alors, tout sera achevé, quand le Christ remettra le pouvoir royal à Dieu son Père, après avoir anéanti, parmi les êtres célestes, toute Principauté, toute Souveraineté et Puissance. Car c’est lui qui doit régner jusqu’au jour où Dieu aura mis sous ses pieds tous ses ennemis. Et le dernier ennemi qui sera anéanti, c’est la mort, car il a tout mis sous ses pieds.
Acclamation
Alléluia. Alléluia. Aujourd’hui s’est ouverte la porte du paradis : Marie est entrée dans la gloire de Dieu ; exultez dans le ciel, tous les anges ! Alléluia.
Évangile: Lc 1, 39-56
En ces jours-là, Marie se mit en route et se rendit avec empressement vers la région montagneuse, dans une ville de Judée. Elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie et salua Élisabeth. Or, quand Élisabeth entendit la salutation de Marie, l’enfant tressaillit en elle. Alors, Élisabeth fut remplie d’Esprit Saint, et s’écria d’une voix forte : « Tu es bénie entre toutes les femmes, et le fruit de tes entrailles est béni. D’où m’est-il donné que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne jusqu’à moi ? Car, lorsque tes paroles de salutation sont parvenues à mes oreilles, l’enfant a tressailli d’allégresse en moi. Heureuse celle qui a cru à l’accomplissement des paroles qui lui furent dites de la part du Seigneur. » Marie dit alors : « Mon âme exalte le Seigneur, exulte mon esprit en Dieu, mon Sauveur ! Il s’est penché sur son humble servante ; désormais tous les âges me diront bienheureuse. Le Puissant fit pour moi des merveilles ; Saint est son nom ! Sa miséricorde s’étend d’âge en âge sur ceux qui le craignent. Déployant la force de son bras, il disperse les superbes. Il renverse les puissants de leurs trônes, il élève les humbles. Il comble de biens les affamés, renvoie les riches les mains vides. Il relève Israël son serviteur, il se souvient de son amour, de la promesse faite à nos pères, en faveur d’Abraham et sa descendance à jamais. » Marie resta avec Élisabeth environ trois mois, puis elle s’en retourna chez elle.
Prière sur les offrandes
Que s’élève jusqu’à toi, Seigneur, notre fervent sacrifice. Et tandis qu’intercède pour nous la Très Sainte Vierge Marie, emportée au ciel, que nos cœurs, brûlants de charité, aspirent toujours à monter vers toi. Par Jésus.

Tous les âges te diront bienheureuse, Vierge Marie: le Puissant a fait pour toi des merveilles.
Prière après la communion
Après nous avoir donné, Seigneur, le sacrement qui nous sauve. Accorde-nous, par l’intercession de Marie, la Vierge bienheureuse élevée au ciel, de parvenir à la gloire de la résurrection. Par Jésus.
Méditation
L’assomption de la Vierge Marie en corps et en âme dans les cieux révèle et rappelle la vocation de tout homme, celle de partager en plénitude la vie de Dieu. Marie a reçu cette grâce et elle en a fait bon usage, d’où son action de grâce dans l’Evangile. Dans son magnificat elle fait un portrait d’elle-même. Elle est l’humble servante du Seigneur. Cette attitude se voit déjà dans sa visite à Elisabeth, elle la mère de Dieu, elle passera 3 mois à son service. Marie est la bienheureuse, apôtre de la joie. Marie c’est aussi l’icône de la foi en Jésus. En célébrant cette fête de l’assomption on peut bien se demander pourquoi l’Église nous fait elle méditer l’épisode de la visitation ? C’est dans nos actes quotidiens que Dieu nous exalte et tous nous avons l’opportunité d’y arriver en étant humble, au service des autres, en semant la joie autour de nous et surtout en gardant la foi.
