St. Clément 1er,
pape et martyr
Vers 95, Clément, troisième successeur de Pierre à Rome, écrit à l’Église de Corinthe, avec l’autorité déjà reconnue au Siège apostolique, pour rétablir l’unité et rappeler les exigences de la charité chrétienne. D’après des textes du 4e siècle, Clément, exilé en Chersonèse (mer Noire), aurait été jeté à la mer.

Le Seigneur annonce la paix pour son peuple et ses fidèles, et pour ceux qui reviennent vers lui.
Prière d’ouverture
Réveille, Seigneur, le courage de tes fidèles : Qu’ils soient plus ardents à profiter de tes grâces, pour obtenir de toi de plus puissants secours. Par Jésus.
1ère lecture : Ap 15, 1-4
Moi, Jean, j’ai vu dans le ciel un autre signe, grand et merveilleux : sept anges qui détiennent sept fléaux ; ce sont les derniers, puisque s’achève avec eux la fureur de Dieu. J’ai vu comme une mer de cristal, mêlée de feu, et ceux qui sont victorieux de la Bête, de son image, et du chiffre qui correspond à son nom : ils se tiennent debout sur cette mer de cristal, ils ont en main les cithares de Dieu. Ils chantent le cantique de Moïse, serviteur de Dieu, et le cantique de l’Agneau. Ils disent : « Grandes, merveilleuses, tes œuvres, Seigneur Dieu, Souverain de l’univers ! Ils sont justes, ils sont vrais, tes chemins, Roi des nations. Qui ne te craindrait, Seigneur ? À ton nom, qui ne rendrait gloire ? Oui, toi seul es saint ! Oui, toutes les nations viendront et se prosterneront devant toi ; oui, ils sont manifestés, tes jugements. »

- Chantez au Seigneur un chant nouveau, car il a fait des merveilles ; par son bras très saint, par sa main puissante, il s’est assuré la victoire.
- Le Seigneur a fait connaître sa victoire et révélé sa justice aux nations ; il s’est rappelé sa fidélité, son amour, en faveur de la maison d’Israël.

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « On portera la main sur vous et l’on vous persécutera ; on vous livrera aux synagogues et aux prisons, on vous fera comparaître devant des rois et des gouverneurs, à cause de mon nom. Cela vous amènera à rendre témoignage. Mettez-vous donc dans l’esprit que vous n’avez pas à vous préoccuper de votre défense. C’est moi qui vous donnerai un langage et une sagesse à laquelle tous vos adversaires ne pourront ni résister ni s’opposer. Vous serez livrés même par vos parents, vos frères, votre famille et vos amis, et ils feront mettre à mort certains d’entre vous. Vous serez détestés de tous, à cause de mon nom. Mais pas un cheveu de votre tête ne sera perdu. C’est par votre persévérance que vous garderez votre vie. »

Méditation
La première lecture de ce jour fait allusion à la pâque des Hébreux, la libération de l’esclavage en Égypte et la libération des mains des persécuteurs de l’Empire Romain. Les sauvés, ceux qui ont échappé à la persécution rendent grâce à Dieu. Jésus, dans l’Évangile, parle de cette persécution des chrétiens comme une occasion de rendre témoignage. Cependant il en appelle à la patience, la persévérance et à la joie malgré tout.

St. Cecilia
Devotion to St Cecilia, in whose honour a basilica was constructed in Rome in the fifth century, has spread far and wide because of the Passion of Saint Cecilia, which holds her up as a perfect example of a Christian woman, who embraced virginity and suffered martyrdom for the love of Christ.
Entrance Antiphon
Behold, now she follows the Lamb who was crucified for us, powerful in virginity, modesty her offering, a sacrifice on the altar of chastity.
Collect
O God, who gladden us each year with the feast day of your handmaid Saint Cecilia, grant, we pray, that what has been devoutly handed down concerning her may offer us examples to imitate and proclaim the wonders worked in his servants by Christ your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Apocalypse 14:14-19
In my vision I, John, saw a white cloud and, sitting on it, one like a son of man with a gold crown on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. Then another angel came out of the sanctuary, and shouted aloud to the one sitting on the cloud, ‘Put your sickle in and reap: harvest time has come and the harvest of the earth is ripe.’ Then the one sitting on the cloud set his sickle to work on the earth, and the earth’s harvest was reaped.
Another angel, who also carried a sharp sickle, came out of the temple in heaven, and the angel in charge of the fire left the altar and shouted aloud to the one with the sharp sickle, ‘Put your sickle in and cut all the bunches off the vine of the earth; all its grapes are ripe.’ So the angel set his sickle to work on the earth and harvested the whole vintage of the earth and put it into a huge winepress, the winepress of God’s anger.

When some were talking about the Temple, remarking how it was adorned with fine stonework and votive offerings, Jesus said, ‘All these things you are staring at now – the time will come when not a single stone will be left on another: everything will be destroyed.’ And they put to him this question: ‘Master,’ they said ‘when will this happen, then, and what sign will there be that this is about to take place?’
‘Take care not to be deceived,’ he said ‘because many will come using my name and saying, “I am he” and, “The time is near at hand.” Refuse to join them. And when you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened, for this is something that must happen but the end is not so soon.’ Then he said to them, ‘Nation will fight against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes and plagues and famines here and there; there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.’

O God, who bestowed on St. Cecilia. a crown among the Saints for her twofold triumph of virginity and martyrdom, grant, we pray, through the power of this Sacrament, that, bravely overcoming every evil, we may attain the glory of heaven. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The day of the Lord is usually presented in terms of harvest time. God allows both good and bad people to live together; he permits both the corn and weeds to grow in the same farm. On the day of harvest He makes the difference as he burns the weeds and put the corn in the barn. For those who follow God, the day of the Lord is the day of salvation, but for those who have neglected God and pushed Him to the periphery of their lives, the Day of the Lord speaks of disaster and the winepress of God’s anger! That is why in the Gospel today, as the people were more seduced by the beauty of the Temple, Jesus saw its weakness immediately and knew it would collapse. If we do not anchor our security in God, we are bound to collapse too. Since modern man is so taken up by secularism and materialism, they easily get frightened by all the wars, frightful happenings and the calamities in our world today. False prophets and teachers take advantage of this fear and preach amount the imminent end of the world. Many believe them and become frantic.

Ste Cécile,
vierge et martyre
Honorée à Rome depuis le 5e siècle comme vierge et martyre, Cécile serait la fondatrice de la basilique du Transtévère qui porte son nom. Au 15e siècle, la sainte a été choisie comme patronne des musiciens à cause d’une phrase contenue dans le récit légendaire de sa Passion, qui est un poème en l’honneur de la virginité chrétienne : ‘’Pendant que retentissaient les instruments de musique de ses noces, Cécile chantait en son cœur pour le Seigneur.’’

Moi, Jean, j’ai vu : et voici une nuée blanche, et sur cette nuée, quelqu’un siégeait, qui semblait un Fils d’homme. Il avait sur la tête une couronne d’or et, à la main, une faucille aiguisée. Un autre ange sortit du Sanctuaire. Il cria d’une voix forte à celui qui siégeait sur la nuée : « Lance ta faucille et moissonne : elle est venue, l’heure de la moisson, car la moisson de la terre se dessèche. » Alors, celui qui siégeait sur la nuée jeta la faucille sur la terre, et la terre fut moissonnée. Puis un autre ange sortit du Sanctuaire qui est dans le ciel ; il avait, lui aussi, une faucille aiguisée. Un autre ange encore sortit, venant de l’autel ; il avait pouvoir sur le feu. Il interpella d’une voix forte celui qui avait la faucille aiguisée : « Lance ta faucille aiguisée, et vendange les grappes de la vigne sur la terre, car les raisins sont mûrs. » L’ange, alors, jeta la faucille sur la terre, il vendangea la vigne de la terre et jeta la vendange dans la cuve immense de la fureur de Dieu.

- Allez dire aux nations : « Le Seigneur est roi ! » Le monde, inébranlable, tient bon. Il gouverne les peuples avec droiture.
- Joie au ciel ! Exulte la terre ! Les masses de la mer mugissent, la campagne tout entière est en fête.
- Les arbres des forêts dansent de joie devant la face du Seigneur, car il vient, car il vient pour juger la terre.

En ce temps-là, comme certains parlaient du Temple, des belles pierres et des ex-voto qui le décoraient, Jésus leur déclara : « Ce que vous contemplez, des jours viendront où il n’en restera pas pierre sur pierre : tout sera détruit. » Ils lui demandèrent : « Maître, quand cela arrivera-t-il ? Et quel sera le signe que cela est sur le point d’arriver ? » Jésus répondit : « Prenez garde de ne pas vous laisser égarer, car beaucoup viendront sous mon nom, et diront : “C’est moi”, ou encore : “Le moment est tout proche.” Ne marchez pas derrière eux ! Quand vous entendrez parler de guerres et de désordres, ne soyez pas terrifiés : il faut que cela arrive d’abord, mais ce ne sera pas aussitôt la fin. » Alors Jésus ajouta : « On se dressera nation contre nation, royaume contre royaume. Il y aura de grands tremblements de terre et, en divers lieux, des famines et des épidémies ; des phénomènes effrayants surviendront, et de grands signes venus du ciel. »

La première lecture nous montre Jésus, présence divine dans la solidité de son pouvoir et de sa force toujours victorieuse. Pour entrer dans sa victoire, Jésus dans l’Evangile nous invite à vivre chaque jour en présence de Dieu, sans nous laisser détourner par les faux messies et les fausses prophéties. Sainte Cécile a su donner tout son être à Dieu même dans la persécution, sachons suivre ses traces.

Présentation de
la Vierge Marie
L’Église célèbre aujourd’hui l’offrande intérieure qui fit de Marie, pour toujours, l’humble et fidèle ‘’servante du Seigneur’’. D’après un évangile apocryphe, cette offrande aurait pris une forme extérieure : Marie aurait été présentée, dès son enfance, au Temple de Jérusalem.

Nous te saluons, Mère très sainte: tu as mis au monde le Roi qui gouverne le ciel et la terre pour les siècles sans fin.
Prière d’ouverture
Puisque nous célébrons la mémoire de la très sainte Vierge Marie, accorde- nous, Seigneur, par son intercession, le bonheur de vivre dès maintenant en ta présence et d’avoir part un jour à la plénitude de ta grâce. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Ap 14, 1-3.4b-5
Moi, Jean, j’ai vu : et voici que l’Agneau se tenait debout sur la montagne de Sion, et avec lui les cent quarante-quatre mille qui portent, inscrits sur leur front, le nom de l’Agneau et celui de son Père. Et j’ai entendu une voix venant du ciel comme la voix des grandes eaux ou celle d’un fort coup de tonnerre ; mais cette voix que j’entendais était aussi comme celle des joueurs de cithare qui chantent et s’accompagnent sur leur cithare. Ils chantent un cantique nouveau devant le Trône, et devant les quatre Vivants et les Anciens. Personne ne pouvait apprendre ce cantique sinon les cent quarante-quatre mille, ceux qui ont été rachetés et retirés de la terre. Ceux-là suivent l’Agneau partout où il va ; ils ont été pris d’entre les hommes, achetés comme prémices pour Dieu et pour l’Agneau. Dans leur bouche, on n’a pas trouvé de mensonge ; ils sont sans tache.

R/ Voici le peuple de ceux qui cherchent ta face, Seigneur.
- Au Seigneur, le monde et sa richesse, la terre et tous ses habitants ! C’est lui qui l’a fondée sur les mers et la garde inébranlable sur les flots.
- Qui peut gravir la montagne du Seigneur et se tenir dans le lieu saint ? L’homme au cœur pur, aux mains innocentes, qui ne livre pas son âme aux idoles.
- Il obtient, du Seigneur, la bénédiction, et de Dieu son Sauveur, la justice. Voici le peuple de ceux qui le cherchent ! Voici Jacob qui recherche ta face !

En ce temps-là, comme Jésus enseignait dans le Temple, levant les yeux, il vit les gens riches qui mettaient leurs offrandes dans le Trésor. Il vit aussi une veuve misérable y mettre deux petites pièces de monnaie. Alors il déclara : « En vérité, je vous le dis : cette pauvre veuve a mis plus que tous les autres. Car tous ceux-là, pour faire leur offrande, ont pris sur leur superflu mais elle, elle a pris sur son indigence : elle a mis tout ce qu’elle avait pour vivre. »

Dans son amour pour les hommes, que ton Fils unique vienne à notre secours, Seigneur : puisque sa naissance n’a pas altéré mais a consacré la virginité de sa mère, qu’il nous délivre aujourd’hui de nos péchés et te rende agréable cette offrande. Lui qui.

Heureuse la Vierge Marie, qui a porté dans son sein le Fils du Père éternel.

En communiant à la nourriture du ciel, nous implorons ta bonté, Seigneur : puisque nous avons la joie de faire mémoire de la Vierge Marie, rends-nous capables d’accueillir comme elle le mystère de notre rédemption. Par Jésus.
Méditation
L’Église célèbre en ce jour la Présentation de la Vierge Marie. La Vierge, servante du Seigneur, totalement disposée à devenir Mère du Christ, l’Agneau de Dieu. La première lecture nous présente cet agneau revêtu de la gloire du ciel. Nous pouvons le rejoindre si nous sommes prêts à donner à Dieu le meilleur de nous-mêmes et le meilleur de ce que nous possédons, comme Maman Marie, et comme l’a fait la misérable veuve de l’Évangile qui a mis dans le tronc des offrandes tout ce qu’elle avait pour vivre.

The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
In unity with Eastern Christianity, and commemorating the dedication in 543 of the New Basilica of Saint Mary, this feast celebrates Mary’s “dedication” of herself to God from her infancy, inspired by the Holy Spirit, whose grace had filled her ever since her immaculate conception.
Entrance Antiphon
Hail, Holy Mother, who gave birth to the King who rules heaven and earth for ever.
Collect
As we venerate the glorious memory of the most holy Virgin Mary, grant, we pray, O Lord, through her intercession, that we, too, may merit to receive from the fullness of your grace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Apocalypse 14:1-5
In my vision I, John, saw Mount Zion, and standing on it a Lamb who had with him a hundred and forty-four thousand people, all with his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. I heard a sound coming out of the sky like the sound of the ocean or the roar of thunder; it seemed to be the sound of harpists playing their harps. There in front of the throne they were singing a new hymn in the presence of the four animals and the elders, a hymn that could only be learnt by the hundred and forty-four thousand who had been redeemed from the world; they follow the Lamb wherever he goes; they have been redeemed from amongst men to be the first-fruits for God and for the Lamb. They never allowed a lie to pass their lips and no fault can be found in them.

- The Lord’s is the earth and its fullness, the world and all its peoples. It is he who set it on the seas; on the waters he made it firm.

As we receive this heavenly Sacrament, we beseech, O Lord, your mercy, that we, who rejoice in commemorating the Blessed Virgin Mary, may by imitating her serve worthily the mystery of our redemption. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Biblical numbering is much more about symbolism than arithmetic precision. A hundred and forty-four thousand with twelve thousand from each of the tribes of Israel points more to the universality and uniformity of salvation given to God’s new Israel, the new people of God spread throughout the world, than to the tribes within the geographical Israel we know. The important point here is that these redeemed people of God are those who follow the lamb wherever he goes; they cling to Jesus and remain faithful to him whatever be the situation. These people who follow the lamb do not hold back anything he asks of them, not even their very lives. Like the poor widow they can stake everything they own for the love of Christ.
