Le Confesseur
Dernier roi à régner sur l’Angleterre avant la conquête de ce pays par les Normands de Guillaume le Conquérant, il avait horreur du sang versé. Aussi éminent par sa piété que par sa générosité, il sut se faire l’ami des petites gens et fut vite l’objet d’un culte populaire. Mais, en réalité, il n’était pas fait pour être roi.

Si tu retiens les fautes, Seigneur, qui donc subsistera? Mais près de toi se trouve le pardon, Dieu fidèle.
Prière d’ouverture
Nous t’en prions, Seigneur, que ta grâce nous devance et qu’elle nous accompagne toujours, pour nous rendre attentifs à faire le bien sans relâche. Par Jésus Christ.
1ère lecture : Ep 1, 1-10
Paul, apôtre du Christ Jésus par la volonté de Dieu, à ceux qui sont sanctifiés et habitent Éphèse, ceux qui croient au Christ Jésus. À vous, la grâce et la paix de la part de Dieu notre Père et du Seigneur Jésus Christ. Béni soit Dieu, le Père de notre Seigneur Jésus Christ ! Il nous a bénis et comblés des bénédictions de l’Esprit, au ciel, dans le Christ. Il nous a choisis, dans le Christ, avant la fondation du monde, pour que nous soyons saints, immaculés devant lui, dans l’amour. Il nous a prédestinés à être, pour lui, des fils adoptifs par Jésus, le Christ. Ainsi l’a voulu sa bonté, à la louange de gloire de sa grâce, la grâce qu’il nous donne dans le Fils bien-aimé En lui, par son sang, nous avons la rédemption, le pardon de nos fautes. C’est la richesse de la grâce que Dieu a fait déborder jusqu’à nous en toute sagesse et intelligence. Il nous dévoile ainsi le mystère de sa volonté, selon que sa bonté l’avait prévu dans le Christ : pour mener les temps à leur plénitude, récapituler toutes choses dans le Christ, celles du ciel et celles de la terre.

R/ Le Seigneur a fait connaître son salut. (cf. Ps 97, 2a)
- Chantez au Seigneur un chant nouveau, car il a fait des merveilles ; par son bras très saint, par sa main puissante, il s’est assuré la victoire.
- Le Seigneur a fait connaître sa victoire et révélé sa justice aux nations ; il s’est rappelé sa fidélité, son amour, en faveur de la maison d’Israël.

Évangile : Lc 11, 47-54
« Quel malheur pour vous, parce que vous bâtissez les tombeaux des prophètes, alors que vos pères les ont tués. Ainsi vous témoignez que vous approuvez les actes de vos pères, puisque eux-mêmes ont tué les prophètes, et vous, vous bâtissez leurs tombeaux. C’est pourquoi la Sagesse de Dieu elle-même a dit : Je leur enverrai des prophètes et des apôtres ; parmi eux, ils en tueront et en persécuteront. Ainsi cette génération devra rendre compte du sang de tous les prophètes qui a été versé depuis la fondation du monde, depuis le sang d’Abel jusqu’au sang de Zacharie, qui a péri entre l’autel et le sanctuaire. Oui, je vous le déclare : on en demandera compte à cette génération. Quel malheur pour vous, docteurs de la Loi, parce que vous avez enlevé la clé de la connaissance ; vous-mêmes n’êtes pas entrés, et ceux qui voulaient entrer, vous les en avez empêchés. » Quand Jésus fut sorti de la maison, les scribes et les pharisiens commencèrent à s’acharner contre lui et à le harceler de questions ; ils lui tendaient des pièges pour traquer la moindre de ses paroles.

Dieu souverain, nous te le demandons humblement: Rends-nous participants de la nature divine, puisque tu nous as fait communier au corps et au sang du Christ. Lui qui.
Méditation
Jésus est indigné contre les docteurs de la loi parce qu’ils collaborent et continuent de faire ce que leurs pères ont eu à faire aux messagers de Dieu. Ils continuent de tuer et de persécuter les prophètes et les apôtres. De surcroit, comme ils ont la clé de la connaissance de la loi de Dieu et de l’écriture sainte, ils en font une mauvaise interprétation. Pire encore, ils s’érigent en obstacle à ceux qui veulent y accéder. Face à cette critique de Jésus, ils se fâchent et cherchent par tous les moyens possibles comment s’emparer de Lui ? Ne nous arrive-t-il pas d’être un blocage à ceux qui veulent s’approcher de Dieu ? Ne collaborons-nous pas souvent à nuire les envoyés de Dieu. Demandons à Dieu la grâce de collaborer à son plan de salut.

He became King of England in 1042. He was regarded as a saint during his lifetime, renowned for his generosity to the Church and to the poor and for his readiness to listen to his subjects’ grievances. He died on 5 January 1066.

First reading : Ephesians 1:1-10

Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all the spiritual blessings of heaven in Christ. Gospel : Luke 11:47-54
Jesus said: ‘Alas for you who build the tombs of the prophets, the men your ancestors killed! In this way you both witness what your ancestors did and approve it; they did the killing, you do the building. ‘And that is why the Wisdom of God said, “I will send them prophets and apostles; some they will slaughter and persecute, so that this generation will have to answer for every prophet’s blood that has been shed since the foundation of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was murdered between the altar and the sanctuary.” Yes, I tell you, this generation will have to answer for it all. ‘Alas for you lawyers who have taken away the key of knowledge! You have not gone in yourselves, and have prevented others going in who wanted to.’ When he left the house, the scribes and the Pharisees began a furious attack on him and tried to force answers from him on innumerable questions, setting traps to catch him out in something he might say.

Meditation
The prophets were often rejected and martyred because they spoke of God’s wisdom and that was unpleasant to many. Jesus rebukes the religious leaders of His days because of their double standards. They profess admiration for the prophets by building their tombs but paradoxically reject what is essential: their message. The lawyers and scribes have taken away the key of knowledge because they misinterpret the scriptures, thus not only shutting themselves from heaven but also preventing others from understanding God’s Word. Only those who are humble and submit to God’s Word can receive wisdom. Jesus reminds us to lead lives that honour God and others.

Païen, cet anglais, roi de Kent, demanda en mariage une chrétienne, Ethelburge. Instruit par les événements mais surtout par saint Paulin, évêque de York, il rejoignit la foi de son épouse. Il aida ainsi à la fondation de l’Eglise anglo-saxonne. Il fut tué lors d’une bataille à Hatfield et sa mort fut considérée comme un martyre.

1ère lecture : Ga 5, 18-25
Frères, si vous vous laissez conduire par l’Esprit, vous n’êtes pas soumis à la Loi. On sait bien à quelles actions mène la chair : inconduite, impureté, débauche, idolâtrie, sorcellerie, haines, rivalité, jalousie, emportements, intrigues, divisions, sectarisme, envie, beuveries, orgies et autres choses du même genre. Je vous préviens, comme je l’ai déjà fait : ceux qui commettent de telles actions ne recevront pas en héritage le royaume de Dieu. Mais voici le fruit de l’Esprit : amour, joie, paix, patience, bonté, bienveillance, fidélité, douceur et maîtrise de soi. En ces domaines, la Loi n’intervient pas. Ceux qui sont au Christ Jésus ont crucifié en eux la chair, avec ses passions et ses convoitises. Puisque l’Esprit nous fait vivre, marchons sous la conduite de l’Esprit.

R/ Qui marche à ta suite, Seigneur, aura la lumière de la vie
- Heureux est l’homme qui n’entre pas au conseil des méchants, qui ne suit pas le chemin des pécheurs, ne siège pas avec ceux qui ricanent, mais se plaît dans la loi du Seigneur et murmure sa loi jour et nuit !
- Il est comme un arbre planté près d’un ruisseau, qui donne du fruit en son temps, et jamais son feuillage ne meurt ; tout ce qu’il entreprend réussira. Tel n’est pas le sort des méchants.
- Mais ils sont comme la paille balayée par le vent. Le Seigneur connaît le chemin des justes, mais le chemin des méchants se perdra.

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait : « Quel malheur pour vous, pharisiens, parce que vous payez la dîme sur toutes les plantes du jardin, comme la menthe et la rue et vous passez à côté du jugement et de l’amour de Dieu. Ceci, il fallait l’observer, sans abandonner cela. Quel malheur pour vous, pharisiens, parce que vous aimez le premier siège dans les synagogues, et les salutations sur les places publiques. Quel malheur pour vous, parce que vous êtes comme ces tombeaux qu’on ne voit pas et sur lesquels on marche sans le savoir. » Alors un docteur de la Loi prit la parole et lui dit : « Maître, en parlant ainsi, c’est nous aussi que tu insultes. » Jésus reprit : « Vous aussi, les docteurs de la Loi, malheureux êtes-vous, parce que vous chargez les gens de fardeaux impossibles à porter, et vous-mêmes, vous ne touchez même pas ces fardeaux d’un seul doigt. »

Aujourd’hui, Jésus critique les pharisiens et les docteurs de la loi qui aiment poser les actes qui n’engagent pas leur cœur. Ils portent des masques qui couvrent leurs infidélités aux exigences de Dieu. Jésus nous interpelle et nous fait remarquer que nous aimons les honneurs et les salutations sur les places publiques et que nous lions aux autres des fardeaux lourds à porter que nous ne voulons même pas remuer du bout de doigt. Que le Seigneur Jésus, dont le joug est doux et le fardeau léger, fasse que jamais, au nom de sa parole, nous n’imposions aux hommes des charges qu’ils ne peuvent porter. Qu’il nous donne la grâce de mettre notre conduite en accord avec nos paroles.

St. Wilfrid
(634 – 709)
Wilfrid was born in Northumbria in 634. He took part in the Synod of Whitby (664), where he promoted Rome’s way of calculating the date of Easter, and the Roman form of Christian worship. He was missionary, evangelist, monk and bishop. He died in Oundle, in October 709.

First reading : Galatians 5:18-25
If you are led by the Spirit, no law can touch you. When self-indulgence is at work the results are obvious: fornication, gross indecency and sexual irresponsibility; idolatry and sorcery; feuds and wrangling, jealousy, bad temper and quarrels; disagreements, factions, envy; drunkenness, orgies and similar things. I warn you now, as I warned you before: those who behave like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. What the Spirit brings is very different: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and self-control. There can be no law against things like that, of course. You cannot belong to Christ Jesus unless you crucify all self-indulgent passions and desires. Since the Spirit is our life, let us be directed by the Spirit.

Meditation
Jesus is angry with religious leaders because they have failed to listen to God’s Word and are instead misleading those they are supposed to lead to the Father. In their distorted zeal, they require the observance of burdensome rules that distract from the essentials of religion, which are love of God and love of neighbour. They are, in Jesus’words, unmarked graves, and so it is hard to determine the extent of their spiritual decay. In today’s gospel, Jesus seeks to point out that what is more important is not the observance of exacting laws, but the love of God and neighbour.

Pope John XXIII
(1881 – 1963)
He was ordained priest in 1904. He served the Holy See directly in various posts, both in Rome and in Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece, culminating as Apostolic Nuncio to France from 1944 until 1953. He was elected Pope in 1958. He convoked the Roman Synod, instituted the revision of Canon Law, and called the Second Vatican Council, which opened on 11 October 1962.

Instead, give alms from what you have and then indeed everything will be clean for you.’

Meditation
Today’s gospel raises a fundamental question: which is more important to God, clean hands or a clean heart and mind? Jesus reproaches the Pharisees for their evil thoughts. He urges them, and us, to give alms and by so doing, express love, kindness and mercy to those in need. This is important because a heart overflowing with love has no place for evil thoughts. The Pharisees are obsessed with observing the Law, but Jesus asks for even much more- showing love, mercy and compassion to the needy. For Jesus, holiness is not essentially about staying away from what is considered ritually unclean, but placing inner goodness above the law.
