The First Martyrs of the See of Rome
When the city of Rome had been devastated by fire in the year 64, the Emperor Nero launched a persecution against the Christians, who were thrown to the wild beasts in the arena or soaked in tar and used as living torches. Their deaths are documented in the writings of the Roman historian Tacitus and in Pope St Clement’s letter to the Corinthians.

Meditation
This episode in today’s Gospel communicated hope and a sense of relief to the early Christian communities that were facing persecutions from many fronts. This and many other episodes in the life of Jesus helped the community to discover, in the midst of an apparent absence, the welcoming and powerful presence of Jesus who conquers and dominates the sea. The central theme, therefore, was to assure the Christian communities that there was no need for fear. The disciples get to know Jesus bit by bit, through his teaching and works but today in the Gospel they discover another face of Jesus. Only a person with divine powers can control the forces of nature. After Jesus finished teaching, he went into the boat and the disciples followed. Following the master is a very symbolic gesture as well, an important aspect of discipleship. The disciples cry out in fear, does this show a clear picture of myself when I fear that Jesus is asleep while the troubles in life threaten to overwhelm me? We can all identify many moments in life when Jesus seems to be uninterested and uncaring. Through prayer, Jesus calms us too and comes in when we really need Him.

Probablement originaire d’Orient, envoyé par un pontife romain, il arrive en Limousin, prêche à Toulx-Sainte-Croix, à Ahun. Parvenu à Limoges, il s’y fixe, fonde un centre chrétien, convertit un certain nombre d’habitants appartenant notamment à la haute société et installe un sanctuaire hors de l’agglomération.
Les premiers martyrs de l’Eglise de Rome
Vers l’an 100, l’historien païen Tacite écrit à propos de Néron, que l’on accusait, non sans raison, d’avoir incendié Rome : ‘’Pour détruire les rumeurs, Néron se déchargea sur d’autres qu’il accusa, et soumit aux tortures les plus raffinées ces gens, odieux par leurs abominations, que le peuple appelait chrétiens. Ce nom leur vient de Christ qui avait été supplicié sous Tibère, par le procurateur Ponce Pilate.’’ En 64, en effet, beaucoup de chrétiens furent crucifiés et brûlés vifs dans les jardins de Néron sur la colline du Vatican. Plusieurs auteurs anciens affirment que saint Pierre était du nombre. Bientôt première en dignité, la jeune Eglise de Rome avait commencé par être une des premières à offrir au Christ le témoignage d’amour qu’est le martyre.

Écoutez cette parole que le Seigneur prononce contre vous, fils d’Israël, contre tout le peuple qu’il a fait monter du pays d’Égypte : « Je vous ai distingués, vous seuls, parmi tous les peuples de la terre ; aussi je vous demanderai compte de tous vos crimes. » Deux hommes font-ils route ensemble sans s’être mis d’accord ? Est-ce que le lion rugit dans la forêt sans avoir de proie ? Le lionceau va-t-il crier du fond de sa tanière sans avoir rien pris ? L’oiseau tombe-t-il dans le filet posé à terre sans y être attiré par un appât ? Le piège se relève-t-il du sol sans avoir rien attrapé ? Va-t-on sonner du cor dans une ville sans que le peuple tremble ? Les disciples s’approchèrent et le réveillèrent en disant : « Seigneur, sauve-nous ! Nous sommes perdus. » Mais il leur dit : « Pourquoi êtes-vous si craintifs, hommes de peu de foi ? » Alors, Jésus, debout, menaça les vents et la mer, et il se fit un grand calme. Les gens furent saisis d’étonnement et disaient : « Quel est donc celui-ci, pour que même les vents et la mer lui obéissent ? » – Acclamons la Parole de Dieu.

Sts. Peter and Paul, apostles
Two pillars of our faith! Peter’s original name was Simon. Christ Himself gave him the name Cephas or Peter (rock) when they first met and later confirmed it. The first Pope, Peter is the Prince of the Apostles.
Converted from Judaism, Paul did much to advance Christianity among the gentiles, and is considered one of the primary sources of early Church doctrine.

O God, who on the Solemnity of the Apostles Peter and Paul, give us the noble and holy joy of this day, grant, we pray, that your Church may, in all things, follow the teaching of those through whom she received the beginnings of right religion. First reading: Acts 12:1-11
King Herod started persecuting certain members of the Church. He beheaded James the brother of John, and when he saw that this pleased the Jews he decided to arrest Peter as well. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread, and he put Peter in prison, assigning four squads of four soldiers each to guard him in turns. Herod meant to try Peter in public after the end of Passover week. All the time Peter was under guard the Church prayed to God for him unremittingly. On the night before Herod was to try him, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with double chains, while guards kept watch at the main entrance to the prison. Then suddenly the angel of the Lord stood there, and the cell was filled with light. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him. ‘Get up!’ he said ‘Hurry!’ – and the chains fell from his hands. The angel then said, ‘Put on your belt and sandals.’ After he had done this, the angel next said, ‘Wrap your cloak round you and follow me.’ Peter followed him, but had no idea that what the angel did was all happening in reality; he thought he was seeing a vision. They passed through two guard posts one after the other, and reached the iron gate leading to the city. This opened of its own accord; they went through it and had walked the whole length of one street when suddenly the angel left him. It was only then that Peter came to himself. ‘Now I know it is all true’ he said. ‘The Lord really did send his angel and has saved me from Herod and from all that the Jewish people were so certain would happen to me.’

Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. And the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven.’

Grant us, O Lord, who have been renewed by this Sacrament, so to live in the Church, that, persevering in the breaking of the Bread and in the teaching of the Apostles, we may be one heart and one soul, made steadfast in your love. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
We remember today Saints Peter and Paul who were instrumental in early years of the Church’s history. The two apostles had two different personalities which helped in the early church: Peter’s impetuousity helped him look after the flock and Paul’s strong character and strong intellectual training helped to ensure that the non-Jews were welcomed in the Church. The people who knew Jesus had different impressions of him: to some he was Q healer to others he was a teacher and to the religious authorities, he was a troublesome leader who threatened their political power. So, when Jesus asks this quintessential question of faith: “who do you say I am?” The disciples who had followed him and saw all he did and listened to Him daily Had To give a personalized answer. They needed to choose and make the commitment of faith; choose between being a follower, a spectator or an antagonist. Peter answers by proclaiming this profession of faith: “You are the Christ … the Son of the living God.” St Paul met this same Messiah on his way to Damascus when he asked “who are you, Lord?” And the Lord replied: “I am Jesus of Nazareth whom you are persecuting.” Paul had the opportunity to make a choice and he became a great missionary.

Saint Pierre et saint Paul, apôtres
‘’ Pierre’’ : ce nom révèle la mission que Jésus confie à Simon, fils de Jean, un des premiers disciples qu’il ait appelés à le suivre. En lui donnant ce nouveau nom, Jésus invite le pécheur de Galilée à devenir le rocher sur lequel sera fondée l’Eglise. Pour répondre à sa mission, l’Apôtre, dont la foi est ardente, devra apprendre du Seigneur l’humilité et l’amour qui feront de lui le symbole vivant de l’unique Pasteur. Le regard de Jésus se posant sur Pierre après son reniement le retournera et l’établira dans une humilité confiante. Dans le dialogue avec son Seigneur ressuscité, Pierre apprendra comment devenir le modèle de ceux qui ont à exercer l’autorité dans l’Eglise : le chef de l’Eglise doit l’unifier, non en la dominant, mais en la servant avec un amour dont Jésus soit à la fois l’objet et le modèle.
Paul de Tarse, Juif zélé, n’a pas connu Jésus durant sa vie terrestre ; et il a refusé de reconnaitre le Messie en ce Jésus crucifié. Or celui-ci se révèle à Paul comme vivant dans la gloire du Dieu unique, et vivant aussi dans le cœur des hommes qui croient en lui et que Paul persécute ; de ce persécuteur, Jésus fait le témoin de sa résurrection, un apôtre à l’égal des Douze. Dès lors, Paul devient le type du missionnaire auprès des païens.
Si Pierre, au centre de l’Eglise, assure son unité, Paul est toujours à la frontière, instrument de l’Esprit qui veut rendre l’Eglise universelle. On voit comment Pierre et Paul se complètent et pourquoi ils sont unis dans le culte de l’Eglise, après avoir subi l’un et l’autre le martyre à Rome, où Pierre fut crucifié vers 64, t Paul décapité vers 67.

Première lecture (Ac 3, 1-10)
En ces jours-là, Pierre et Jean montaient au Temple pour la prière de l’après-midi, à la neuvième heure. On y amenait alors un homme, infirme de naissance, que l’on installait chaque jour à la porte du Temple, appelée la « Belle-Porte », pour qu’il demande l’aumône à ceux qui entraient. Voyant Pierre et Jean qui allaient entrer dans le Temple, il leur demanda l’aumône. Alors Pierre, ainsi que Jean, fixa les yeux sur lui, et il dit : « Regarde-nous ! » L’homme les observait, s’attendant à recevoir quelque chose de leur part. Pierre déclara : « De l’argent et de l’or, je n’en ai pas ; mais ce que j’ai, je te le donne : au nom de Jésus Christ le Nazaréen, lève-toi et marche. » Alors, le prenant par la main droite, il le releva et, à l’instant même, ses pieds et ses chevilles s’affermirent. D’un bond, il fut debout et il marchait. Entrant avec eux dans le Temple, il marchait, bondissait, et louait Dieu. Et tout le peuple le vit marcher et louer Dieu. On le reconnaissait : c’est bien lui qui était assis à la « Belle-Porte » du Temple pour demander l’aumône. Et les gens étaient frappés de stupeur et désorientés devant ce qui lui était arrivé. – Parole du Seigneur.

Les cieux proclament la gloire de Dieu, le firmament raconte l’ouvrage de ses mains. Le jour au jour en livre le récit et la nuit à la nuit en donne connaissance.
Pas de paroles dans ce récit, pas de voix qui s’entende ; mais sur toute la terre en paraît le message et la nouvelle, aux limites du monde.
Deuxième lecture (Ga 1, 11-20)
Frères, je tiens à ce que vous le sachiez, l’Évangile que j’ai proclamé n’est pas une invention humaine. Ce n’est pas non plus d’un homme que je l’ai reçu ou appris, mais par révélation de Jésus Christ. Vous avez entendu parler du comportement que j’avais autrefois dans le judaïsme : je menais une persécution effrénée contre l’Église de Dieu, et je cherchais à la détruire. J’allais plus loin dans le judaïsme que la plupart de mes frères de race qui avaient mon âge, et, plus que les autres, je défendais avec une ardeur jalouse les traditions de mes pères. Mais Dieu m’avait mis à part dès le sein de ma mère ; dans sa grâce, il m’a appelé ; et il a trouvé bon de révéler en moi son Fils, pour que je l’annonce parmi les nations païennes. Aussitôt, sans prendre l’avis de personne, sans même monter à Jérusalem pour y rencontrer ceux qui étaient Apôtres avant moi, je suis parti pour l’Arabie et, de là, je suis retourné à Damas. Puis, trois ans après, je suis monté à Jérusalem pour faire la connaissance de Pierre, et je suis resté quinze jours auprès de lui. Je n’ai vu aucun des autres Apôtres sauf Jacques, le frère du Seigneur. En vous écrivant cela, – je le déclare devant Dieu – je ne mens pas. – Parole du Seigneur.

Jésus se manifesta à ses disciples au bord du lac. Après le repas, il dit à Simon-Pierre : « Simon, fils de Jean, m’aimes-tu vraiment, plus que ceux-ci ? » Il lui répond : « Oui, Seigneur ! Toi, tu le sais : je t’aime. » Jésus lui dit : « Sois le berger de mes agneaux. » Il lui dit une deuxième fois : « Simon, fils de Jean, m’aimes-tu vraiment ? » Il lui répond : « Oui, Seigneur ! Toi, tu le sais : je t’aime. » Jésus lui dit : « Sois le pasteur de mes brebis. » Il lui dit, pour la troisième fois : « Simon, fils de Jean, m’aimes-tu ? » Pierre fut peiné parce que, la troisième fois, Jésus lui demandait : « M’aimes-tu ? » Il lui répond : « Seigneur, toi, tu sais tout : tu sais bien que je t’aime. » Jésus lui dit : « Sois le berger de mes brebis. Amen, amen, je te le dis : quand tu étais jeune, tu mettais ta ceinture toi-même pour aller là où tu voulais ; quand tu seras vieux, tu étendras les mains, et c’est un autre qui te mettra ta ceinture, pour t’emmener là où tu ne voudrais pas aller. » Jésus disait cela pour signifier par quel genre de mort Pierre rendrait gloire à Dieu. Sur ces mots, il lui dit : « Suis-moi.» – Acclamons la Parole de Dieu.

À cette époque, le roi Hérode Agrippa se saisit de certains membres de l’Église pour les mettre à mal. Il supprima Jacques, frère de Jean, en le faisant décapiter. Voyant que cette mesure plaisait aux Juifs, il décida aussi d’arrêter Pierre. C’était les jours des Pains sans levain. Il le fit appréhender, emprisonner, et placer sous la garde de quatre escouades de quatre soldats ; il voulait le faire comparaître devant le peuple après la Pâque. Tandis que Pierre était ainsi détenu dans la prison, l’Église priait Dieu pour lui avec insistance. Hérode allait le faire comparaître. Or, Pierre dormait, cette nuit-là, entre deux soldats ; il était attaché avec deux chaînes et des gardes étaient en faction devant la porte de la prison. Et voici que survint l’ange du Seigneur, et une lumière brilla dans la cellule. Il réveilla Pierre en le frappant au côté et dit : « Lève-toi vite. » Les chaînes lui tombèrent des mains. Alors l’ange lui dit : « Mets ta ceinture et chausse tes sandales. » Ce que fit Pierre. L’ange ajouta : « Enveloppe-toi de ton manteau et suis-moi.» Pierre sortit derrière lui, mais il ne savait pas que tout ce qui arrivait grâce à l’ange était bien réel ; il pensait qu’il avait une vision. Passant devant un premier poste de garde, puis devant un second, ils arrivèrent au portail de fer donnant sur la ville. Celui-ci s’ouvrit tout seul devant eux. Une fois dehors, ils s’engagèrent dans une rue, et aussitôt l’ange le quitta. Alors, se reprenant, Pierre dit : « Vraiment, je me rends compte maintenant que le Seigneur a envoyé son ange, et qu’il m’a arraché aux mains d’Hérode et à tout ce qu’attendait le peuple juif. » – Parole du Seigneur.

Magnifiez avec moi le Seigneur, exaltons tous ensemble son nom. Je cherche le Seigneur, il me répond : de toutes mes frayeurs, il me délivre.
Qui regarde vers lui resplendira, sans ombre ni trouble au visage. Un pauvre crie ; le Seigneur entend : il le sauve de toutes ses angoisses.

Deuxième lecture (2 Tm 4, 6-8.17-18)
Bien-aimé, je suis déjà offert en sacrifice, le moment de mon départ est venu. J’ai mené le bon combat, j’ai achevé ma course, j’ai gardé la foi. Je n’ai plus qu’à recevoir la couronne de la justice : le Seigneur, le juste juge, me la remettra en ce jour-là, et non seulement à moi, mais aussi à tous ceux qui auront désiré avec amour sa Manifestation glorieuse. Tous m’ont abandonné. Le Seigneur, lui, m’a assisté. Il m’a rempli de force pour que, par moi, la proclamation de l’Évangile s’accomplisse jusqu’au bout et que toutes les nations l’entendent. J’ai été arraché à la gueule du lion ; le Seigneur m’arrachera encore à tout ce qu’on fait pour me nuire. Il me sauvera et me fera entrer dans son Royaume céleste. À lui la gloire pour les siècles des siècles. Amen. – Parole du Seigneur.

En ce temps-là, Jésus, arrivé dans la région de Césarée-de-Philippe, demandait à ses disciples : « Au dire des gens, qui est le Fils de l’homme ? » Ils répondirent : « Pour les uns, Jean le Baptiste ; pour d’autres, Élie ; pour d’autres encore, Jérémie ou l’un des prophètes. » Jésus leur demanda : « Et vous, que dites-vous ? Pour vous, qui suis-je? » Alors Simon-Pierre prit la parole et dit : « Tu es le Christ, le Fils du Dieu vivant ! » Prenant la parole à son tour, Jésus lui dit : « Heureux es-tu, Simon fils de Yonas : ce n’est pas la chair et le sang qui t’ont révélé cela, mais mon Père qui est aux cieux. Et moi, je te le déclare : Tu es Pierre, et sur cette pierre je bâtirai mon Église ; et la puissance de la Mort ne l’emportera pas sur elle. Je te donnerai les clés du royaume des Cieux : tout ce que tu auras lié sur la terre sera lié dans les cieux, et tout ce que tu auras délié sur la terre sera délié dans les cieux. » – Acclamons la Parole de Dieu.

First reading: 2 Kings 4:8-11,13-16
One day as Elisha was on his way to Shunem, a woman of rank who lived there pressed him to stay and eat there. After this he always broke his journey for a meal when he passed that way. She said to her husband, ‘Look, I am sure the man who is constantly passing our way must be a holy man of God. Let us build him a small room on the roof, and put him a bed in it, and a table and chair and lamp; whenever he comes to us he can rest there.’ One day when he came, he retired to the upper room and lay down. He said to his servant Gehazi, ‘Call our Shunammitess. Tell her this: “Look, you have gone to all this trouble for us, what can we do for you? Is there anything you would like said for you to the king or to the commander of the army?”’ But she replied, ‘I live with my own people about me.’ ‘What can be done for her then?’ he asked. Gehazi answered, ‘Well, she has no son and her husband is old.’ Elisha said, ‘Call her.’ The servant called her and she stood at the door. This time next year,’ he said ‘you will hold a son in your arms.’

Second reading: Romans 6:3-4, 8-11
When we were baptised in Christ Jesus we were baptised in his death; in other words, when we were baptised we went into the tomb with him and joined him in death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the Father’s glory, we too might live a new life. But we believe that having died with Christ we shall return to life with him: Christ, as we know, having been raised from the dead will never die again. Death has no power over him anymore. When he died, he died, once for all, to sin, so his life now is life with God; and in that way, you too must consider yourselves to be dead to sin but alive for God in Christ Jesus.

Gospel: Matthew 10: 37-42
Jesus instructed the Twelve as follows: ‘Anyone who prefers father or mother to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who prefers son or daughter to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me. Anyone who finds his life will lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it. ‘Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me; and those who welcome me welcome the one who sent me. ‘Anyone who welcomes a prophet will have a prophet’s reward; and anyone who welcomes a holy man will have a holy man’s reward. ‘If anyone gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple, then I tell you solemnly, he will most certainly not lose his reward.’

May this divine sacrifice we have offered and received fill us with life, O Lord, we pray, so that, bound to you in lasting charity, we may bear fruit that lasts forever. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The readings today bring out one clear theme: hospitality. In the first reading, the Shunammite woman does not only welcome the prophet Elisha but goes ahead to make a room for him in her home. She has no special interests and does not intend to gain praises from the public. Her kind gesture and hospitality are due to the fact that Elisha is a prophet, a holy man of God. She received the Lord’s blessing when the prophet promised this childless couple the gift of a child. The gesture of this woman is re-echoed in the Gospel when Jesus says, “Anyone who welcomes a prophet will have a prophet’s reward; and anyone who welcomes a holy man will have a holy man’s reward.” Jesus also speaks of the need to put the Lord first in our lives, even before our own families. Our condition as disciples is not therefore a marginal or a secondary aspect of our lives, it is the central aspect of our being. We are therefore called upon to open our hearts to the Lord just as this woman did when she received Elisha. When we love God first and above everything, then all other relationships will become meaningful. Without God any relationship will have no foundation and no basis. Saint Paul confirms this in our second reading, taken from the Letter to the Romans when he says, “…so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the Father’s glory, we too might live a new life.” We can only reach the newness of life if we trust in God and allow him to live in our hearts and to become instruments of his divine will.
