St. Buonfiglio Monaldo.
Buonfiglio is one of the several Florentine founders of the Servite Order (Servants of Mary) who took up a life of solitude and prayer. These founders were canonized in 1887 by Pope Leo XIII.

The fame of Solomon having reached the queen of Sheba… she came to test him with difficult questions. On coming to Solomon, she opened her mind freely to him; and Solomon had an answer for all her questions, not one of them was too obscure for the king to expound. When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon, the palace he had built, the food at his table, the accommodation for his officials, the organisation of his staff and the way they were dressed, his cup-bearers, and the holocausts he offered in the Temple of the Lord, it left her breathless, and she said to the king, ‘What I heard in my own country about you and your wisdom was true, then! Until I came and saw it with my own eyes I could not believe what they told me, but clearly they told me less than half: for wisdom and prosperity you surpass the report I heard. How happy your wives are! How happy are these servants of yours who wait on you always and hear your wisdom! Blessed be the Lord your God who has granted you his favour, setting you on the throne of Israel! Gospel: Mark 7:14-23
Jesus called the people to him and said, ‘Listen to me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that goes into a man from outside can make him unclean; it is the things that come out of a man that make him unclean. If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen to this.’ When he had gone back into the house, away from the crowd, his disciples questioned him about the parable. He said to them, ‘Do you not understand either? Can you not see that whatever goes into a man from outside cannot make him unclean, because it does not go into his heart but through his stomach and passes out into the sewer?’ (Thus he pronounced all foods clean.) And he went on, ‘It is what comes out of a man that makes him unclean. For it is from within, from men’s hearts, that evil intentions emerge: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within and make a man unclean.’

O God, who have willed that we be partakers in the one Bread and the one Chalice, grant us, we pray, so to live that, made one in Christ, we may joyfully bear fruit for the salvation of the world. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
No normal person eats what he/she judges ‘unclean’. By the process of selection, nobody eats anything unclean. Even a mad man selects from the dustbin that which suits his taste. That is why Jesus says it is not what we eat that makes us unclean but what is conceived in us and finds outward expression in different ways. We have the freedom to conceive good as well as bad ideas. When we choose to conceive bad ideas, they contaminate us and make us unclean. Jesus invites us to make an honest effort to conceive good ideas and evade the bad ones, for by so doing, we seek to remain salt of the earth and light of the world.

Il fut sacré archevêque de Bourges par Saint Germain de Paris vers 568. Pendant sept ans environ il gouverna très saintement son Eglise. Avec les autres métropolitains du royaume de Bourgogne, il prit part au quatrième concile de Paris et signa les lettres synodales destinées à Aegidius, archevêque de Reims, et au roi Sigebert. Grégoire de Tours fait son éloge lorsqu’il raconte qu’après sa mort, sur la dalle qui recouvrait son tombeau, un aveugle recouvra la vue. Par ce signe, le peuple reconnut qu’aveuglé jusqu’ici par les séductions du monde, il n’avait pas mérité de reconnaître combien Félix depuis son vivant avait été l’ami de Dieu.

1ère lecture : 1 R 10, 1-10
En ces jours-là, la reine de Saba avait entendu parler de la renommée de Salomon, qui faisait honneur au nom du Seigneur. Elle vint donc pour le mettre à l’épreuve en lui proposant des énigmes. Elle arriva à Jérusalem avec une escorte imposante: des chameaux chargés d’aromates et d’une énorme quantité d’or et de pierres précieuses. Quand elle fut parvenue auprès de Salomon, elle lui exposa les questions qu’elle avait préparées, mais Salomon trouva réponse à tout et ne fut arrêté par aucune difficulté. Lorsque la reine de Saba vit toute la sagesse de Salomon, le palais qu’il avait construit, les plats servis à sa table, le logement de ses officiers, la tenue du service et l’habillement des serviteurs, ses sommeliers, les holocaustes qu’il offrait à la maison du Seigneur, elle en eut le souffle coupé, et elle dit au roi: « Ce que j’ai entendu dire dans mon pays sur toi et sur ta sagesse, c’était donc vrai! Je ne voulais pas croire ce qu’on disait, avant de venir et de voir de mes yeux; mais voilà qu’on ne m’en avait pas appris la moitié! Tu surpasses en sagesse et en magnificence la renommée qui était venue jusqu’à moi. Heureux tes gens, heureux tes serviteurs que voici, eux qui se tiennent continuellement devant toi et qui entendent ta sagesse! Béni soit le Seigneur ton Dieu, qui t’a montré sa bienveillance en te plaçant sur le trône d’Israël. Parce que le Seigneur aime Israël pour toujours, il t’a établi roi pour exercer le droit et la justice. » Elle fit présent au roi de cent vingt lingots d’or, d’une grande quantité d’aromates et de pierres précieuses; il n’est plus jamais venu une quantité d’aromates pareille à celle que la reine de Saba avait donnée au roi Salomon.

En ce temps-là, appelant de nouveau la foule, Jésus lui disait: « Écoutez-moi tous, et comprenez bien. Rien de ce qui est extérieur à l’homme et qui entre en lui ne peut le rendre impur. Mais ce qui sort de l’homme, voilà ce qui rend l’homme impur. » Quand il eut quitté la foule pour rentrer à la maison, ses disciples l’interrogeaient sur cette parabole. Alors il leur dit: « Êtes-vous donc sans intelligence, vous aussi? Ne comprenez-vous pas que tout ce qui entre dans l’homme, en venant du dehors, ne peut pas le rendre impur, parce que cela n’entre pas dans son cœur, mais dans son ventre, pour être éliminé ? » C’est ainsi que Jésus déclarait purs tous les aliments. Il leur dit encore: « Ce qui sort de l’homme, c’est cela qui le rend impur. Car c’est du dedans, du cœur de l’homme, que sortent les pensées perverses: inconduites, vols, meurtres, adultères, cupidités, méchancetés, fraude, débauche, envie, diffamation, orgueil et démesure. Tout ce mal vient du dedans, et rend l’homme impur. »

Meditation
Selon la Tradition Juive certains aliments sont considérés comme « propres et purs » et d’autres ne le sont pas. Jésus affirme que tous les aliments sont purs. Pour lui, seul le cœur importe, c’est à dire notre intériorité : humeurs, pensées, projets, attitudes, choix, conscience, connaissance et amour. Il s’agit ici de maintenir « propres » tous ces éléments de notre être. Jésus nous appelle ainsi à la conversion des cœurs, et à les débarrasser de tout obstacle au salut. Puisse le seigneur faire de nos cœurs de pierre des cœurs de chair.

Our Lady of Lourdes
In 1858 the Immaculate Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous, near Lourdes in France, in the cavern called “de Massabielle.”Through her, Mary calls on sinners to change their lives.

The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered round Jesus, and they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them. For the Pharisees, and the Jews in general, follow the tradition of the elders and never eat without washing their arms as far as the elbow; and on returning from the market place they never eat without first sprinkling themselves. There are also many other observances which have been handed down to them concerning the washing of cups and pots and bronze dishes. So these Pharisees and scribes asked him, ‘Why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the elders but eat their food with unclean hands?’ He answered, ‘It was of you hypocrites that Isaiah so rightly prophesied in this passage of scripture: This people honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me. The worship they offer me is worthless, the doctrines they teach are only human regulations. You put aside the commandment of God to cling to human traditions.’ And he said to them, ‘How ingeniously you get round the commandment of God in order to preserve your own tradition! For Moses said: Do your duty to your father and your mother, and, Anyone who curses father or mother must be put to death. But you say, “If a man says to his father or mother: Anything I have that I might have used to help you is Corban (that is, dedicated to God), then he is forbidden from that moment to do anything for his father or mother.” In this way you make God’s word null and void for the sake of your tradition which you have handed down. Meditation
Nowadays, there is so much talk about handwashing. A day has even been set aside as the World Day of Handwashing. This seeks to help people to adopt the practice of handwashing so as to avoid bacteria intake. What purpose would it serve, if we wash our hands and eat food that has not been properly prepared? In the Gospel passage, Jesus stresses the point that our material hygiene needs to agree with our spiritual hygiene, our outward cleanliness with our inward purity. Today, therefore, we pray for the grace to live authentic lives, following in the footsteps of Jesus himself.

Notre Dame de Lourdes

Le message de Lourdes, qui est appel à la conversion et à la prière, fait écho à celui de Jésus dans l’Evangile. A la fin de ses apparitions à Bernadette (1858), Marie se nomme ‘’l’Immaculée Conception’’, pour souligner que tout, en elle, est un don de l’Amour qui l’a gratuitement choisi. Par la voix de l’humble bergère, elle nous invite à prier avec une confiance inlassable, afin de nous ouvrir comme elle à l’Amour qui veut nous sauver. Les guérisons que le Seigneur accorde aux pèlerins, à la prière de sa mère, sont le signe de cette volonté de salut. Il s’agit moins d’admirer ces miracles que d’être des témoins fidèles de l’amour qui s’y révèle.

En ce temps-là, les pharisiens et quelques scribes, venus de Jérusalem, se réunissent auprès de Jésus, et voient quelques-uns de ses disciples prendre leur repas avec des mains impures, c’est-à-dire non lavées. – Les pharisiens en effet, comme tous les Juifs, se lavent toujours soigneusement les mains avant de manger, par attachement à la tradition des anciens; et au retour du marché, ils ne mangent pas avant de s’être aspergés d’eau, et ils sont attachés encore par tradition à beaucoup d’autres pratiques : lavage de coupes, de carafes et de plats. Alors les pharisiens et les scribes demandèrent à Jésus: « Pourquoi tes disciples ne suivent-ils pas la tradition des anciens? Ils prennent leurs repas avec des mains impures. » Jésus leur répondit : « Isaïe a bien prophétisé à votre sujet, hypocrites, ainsi qu’il est écrit: Ce peuple m’honore des lèvres, mais son cœur est loin de moi. C’est en vain qu’ils me rendent un culte; les doctrines qu’ils enseignent ne sont que des préceptes humains. Vous aussi, vous laissez de côté le commandement de Dieu, pour vous attacher à la tradition des hommes. » Il leur disait encore: « Vous rejetez bel et bien le commandement de Dieu pour établir votre tradition. En effet, Moïse a dit : Honore ton père et ta mère. Et encore : Celui qui maudit son père ou sa mère sera mis à mort. Méditation
« Ce peuple m’honore des lèvres mais son cœur est loin de moi. » Au temps de Jésus, les Pharisiens multipliaient les lois et les rituels religieux au point qu‘il était impossible de les connaître tous et encore moins de les observer. Aussi Jésus les accuse-t-il de mettre les règles sans importance au-dessus de la loi de Dieu qui est une loi d’amour et de compassion. Comme Chrétiens, il peut nous arriver d’établir nos propres normes vides d’amour et de compassion. Jésus voit au-delà des apparences et nous invite aujourd’hui à la pratique du vrai amour, de la vraie compassion et de la vraie bonté.

St Scholastica (480 – 547)
She was born in Nursia in about 480, the twin sister of St Benedict. She was dedicated to God from an early age and followed her brother to Cassino, where she died in about 547.

As we celebrate anew the Memorial of the Virgin St. Scholastica, we pray, O Lord, that, following her example, we may serve you with pure love and happily receive what comes from loving you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : 1 Kings 8:1-7,9-13
Solomon called the elders of Israel together in Jerusalem to bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord up from the Citadel of David, which is Zion. All the men of Israel assembled round King Solomon in the month of Ethanim, at the time of the feast (that is, the seventh month), and the priests took up the ark and the Tent of Meeting with all the sacred vessels that were in it. In the presence of the ark, King Solomon and all Israel sacrificed sheep and oxen, countless, innumerable. The priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place, in the Debir of the Temple, that is, in the Holy of Holies, under the cherubs’ wings. For there where the ark was placed the cherubs spread out their wings and sheltered the ark and its shafts. There was nothing in the ark except the two stone tablets Moses had placed in it at Horeb, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord had made with the Israelites when they came out of the land of Egypt; they are still there today. Now when the priests came out of the sanctuary, the cloud filled the Temple of the Lord, and because of the cloud the priests could no longer perform their duties: the glory of the Lord filled the Lord’s Temple. Then Solomon said: ‘The Lord has chosen to dwell in the thick cloud. Yes, I have built you a dwelling, a place for you to live in forever.’

Prayer after Communion
Renewed by partaking of this divine gift, we pray, O Lord our God, that by the example of the St. Scholastica, bearing in our body the Death of Jesus, we may strive to hold fast to you alone. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
From the Gospel passage, I can visualise a longing to encounter Jesus. This rush comes from the faith of the people in Jesus, a faith that is expressed by the sick and those who care for them. We are told all those who touched Jesus were cured. Some of us have the fortune of touching Jesus on a daily basis in the Eucharist. What kind of faith do we have in Jesus? We need to believe wholly and only in Jesus. As he cured those touched him in Gennesaret, so will he cure us who touch him daily in the Eucharist.
