Saint Hilaire, évêque
et docteur de l’Église

Vert/Blanc

Entrance Antiphon

Upon a lofty throne, I saw a man seated, whom a host of angels adore, singing in unison: Behold him, the name of whose empire is eternal.

Collect

Attend to the pleas of your people with heavenly care, O Lord, we pray, that they may see what must be done and gain strength to do what they have seen. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading: 1 Samuel 1:1-8

There was a man of Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the highlands of Ephraim whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. He had two wives, one called Hannah, the other Peninnah; Peninnah had children but Hannah had none. Every year this man used to go up from his town to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of Hosts in Shiloh. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there as priests of the Lord. One day Elkanah offered sacrifice. He used to give portions to Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; to Hannah, however, he would give only one portion, although he loved her more, since the Lord had made her barren. Her rival would taunt her to annoy her, because the Lord had made her barren. And this went on year after year; every time they went up to the temple of the Lord she used to taunt her. And so Hannah wept and would not eat. Then Elkanah her husband said to her, ‘Hannah, why are you crying and why are you not eating? Why so sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?’

Psalm 115 (116): 12-19

R/  A thanksgiving sacrifice I make to you, O Lord.

  1. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise; I will call on the Lord’s name.
  2. My vows to the Lord I will fulfil before all his people. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful.
  3. Your servant, Lord, your servant am I; you have loosened my bonds. A thanksgiving sacrifice I make; I will call on the Lord’s name.
  4. My vows to the Lord I will fulfil before all his people, in the courts of the house of the Lord, in your midst, O Jerusalem.

Gospel Acclamation  Ac 16:14

Alleluia, alleluia! Open our heart, O Lord, to accept the words of your Son. Alleluia!

Gospel: Mark 1:14-20

After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he proclaimed the Good News from God. ‘The time has come’ he said ‘and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News.’ As he was walking along by the Sea of Galilee he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net in the lake – for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men.’ And at once they left their nets and followed him. Going on a little further, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they too were in their boat, mending their nets. He called them at once and, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the men he employed, they went after him.

Prayer over the Offerings

May your people’s oblation, O Lord, find favour with you, we pray, that it may restore them to holiness and obtain what they devoutly entreat. Through Christ our Lord.

Communion Antiphon Ps 35: 10

With you, O Lord, is the fountain of life, and in your light we see light.

Prayer after Communion

Humbly we ask you, almighty God, be graciously pleased to grant that those you renew with your Sacraments may also serve with lives pleasing to you. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation

The nets of Simon and Andrew were their means of self-reliance.  But when they encountered Jesus, there was a shift from self-reliance to God-reliance; they left their nets and followed Jesus. James and John also had to make a shift from human attachment (to their father) to a divine attachment; following Jesus.  Something must be left behind in any true encounter with the Lord.  The irresistible call of the Lord leads us to make some genuine sacrifices.  Without leaving behind something, we cannot follow the Lord.

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD

Psalter Proper

St. Marguerite Bourgeoys

White

Entrance Antiphon  Mt 3: 16-17

After the Lord was baptized, the heavens were opened, and the Spirit descended upon him like a dove, and the voice of the Father thundered: This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.

Collect

Almighty ever-living God, who, when Christ had been baptized in the River Jordan and as the Holy Spirit descended upon him, solemnly declared him your beloved Son, grant that your children by adoption, reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, may always be well pleasing to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading : Isaiah 42:1-4,6-7

Thus says the Lord: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom my soul delights. I have endowed him with my spirit that he may bring true justice to the nations. He does not cry out or shout aloud, or make his voice heard in the streets. He does not break the crushed reed, nor quench the wavering flame. Faithfully he brings true justice; he will neither waver, nor be crushed until true justice is established on earth, for the islands are awaiting his law. I, the Lord, have called you to serve the cause of right; I have taken you by the hand and formed you; I have appointed you as covenant of the people and light of the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison, and those who live in darkness from the dungeon.

Psalm 28(29):1-4,9-10

R/ The Lord will bless his people with peace.

  1. O give the Lord, you sons of God, give the Lord glory and power; give the Lord the glory of his name. Adore the Lord in his holy court.
  2. The Lord’s voice resounding on the waters, the Lord on the immensity of waters; the voice of the Lord, full of power, the voice of the Lord, full of splendour.
  3. The God of glory thunders. In his temple they all cry: ‘Glory!’ The Lord sat enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits as king forever.

Second reading: Acts 10:34-38

Peter addressed Cornelius and his household: ‘The truth I have now come to realise’ he said ‘is that God does not have favourites, but that anybody of any nationality who fears God and does what is right is acceptable to him. ‘It is true, God sent his word to the people of Israel, and it was to them that the good news of peace was brought by Jesus Christ – but Jesus Christ is Lord of all men. You must have heard about the recent happenings in Judaea; about Jesus of Nazareth and how he began in Galilee, after John had been preaching baptism. God had anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and because God was with him, Jesus went about doing good and curing all who had fallen into the power of the devil.’

Gospel Acclamation  cf. Mk 9:8

Alleluia, alleluia! The heavens opened and the Father’s voice resounded: ‘This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him.’ Alleluia!

Gospel: Matthew 3:13-17

Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John. John tried to dissuade him. ‘It is I who need baptism from you’ he said ‘and yet you come to me!’ But Jesus replied, ‘Leave it like this for the time being; it is fitting that we should, in this way, do all that righteousness demands.’ At this, John gave in to him. As soon as Jesus was baptised he came up from the water, and suddenly the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him. And a voice spoke from heaven, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on him.’

Prayer over the Offerings

Accept, O Lord, the offerings we have brought to honour the revealing of your beloved Son, so that the oblation of your faithful may be transformed into the sacrifice of him who willed in his compassion to wash away the sins of the world. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

Communion Antiphon Jn 1: 32, 34

Behold the One of whom John said: I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.

Prayer after Communion

Nourished with these sacred gifts, we humbly entreat your mercy, O Lord, that, faithfully listening to your Only Begotten Son, we may be your children in name and in truth. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation

Today we are celebrating the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord in the Jordan River by St. John the Baptist. He is baptized not because he is a sinner but because he wants to be in solidarity with us especially in our journey towards the Kingdom of God. He wants to show that he is with us and is one of us. We are celebrating the Feast of the Lord’s Baptism in order to remind ourselves of our own baptism.  When we are baptized, there should be a change of heart and we become Christians. When we were baptized we chose Christ above all people and things. We believe in the Holy Trinity and we have a vocation to be like Christ and to act like Christ.

DIMANCHE 12 JANVIER 2020

Dimanche 12 Janvier 2020

Baptême du Seigneur

Fête

Sainte Tatiana de Rome

Blanc

Antienne d’ouverture : Mt 3, 16-17

1ère lecture : Is 42, 1-4.6-7

St. William of Bourges

He was Archbishop of Bourges from 1200 until 1209. He was given to a life of exercises of piety and to the acquisition of knowledge. Saint William was canonized on May 17, 1218.

White

Entrance Antiphon Gal 4: 4-5

God sent his Son, born of a woman, so that we might receive adoption as children.

Collect

Almighty ever-living God, who through your Only Begotten Son have made us a new creation for yourself, grant, we pray, that by your grace we may be found in the likeness of him, in whom our nature is united to you. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading :  1 John 5:14-21

We are quite confident that if we ask the Son of God for anything, and it is in accordance with his will, he will hear us; and, knowing that whatever we may ask, he hears us, we know that we have already been granted what we asked of him.  If anybody sees his brother commit a sin that is not a deadly sin, he has only to pray, and God will give life to the sinner – not those who commit a deadly sin;  for there is a sin that is death, and I will not say that you must pray about that.  Every kind of strong doing is sin, but not all sin is deadly.  We know that anyone who has been begotten by God does not sin, because the begotten Son of God protects him, and the Evil One does not touch him.  We know that we belong to god, but the whole world lies in the power of the Evil One.  We know, too, that the Son of God has come, and has given us the power to know the true God.  We are in the true God, as we are in his Son Jesus Christ.  This is the true God, this is eternal life.  Children, be on your guard against false gods.

Psalm 149:1-6, 9

R/ The Lord takes delight in his people.

  1. Sing a new song to the Lord, his praise in the assembly of the faithful. Let Israel rejoice in its Maker, let Zion’s sons exult in their king.
  2. Let them praise his name with dancing and make music with timbrel and harp. For the Lord takes delight in his people he crowns the poor with salvation.
  3. Let the faithful rejoice in their glory, shout for joy and take their rest. Let the praise of God be on their lips, this honour is for all his faithful.

Gospel Acclamation Lk 7: 16

Alleluia, alleluia! A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people. Alleluia!

Gospel John 3:22-30

Jesus went with his disciples into the Judaean countryside and stayed with them there and baptized.  At the same time John was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, where there was plenty of water, and people were going there to be baptised.  This was before John had been put in prison.  Now some of John’s disciples had opened a discussion with a Jew about purification, so they went to John and said: ‘Rabbi, the man who was with you on the far side of the Jordan, the man to whom you bore witness, is baptising now; and everyone is going to him.’ John replied: ‘A man can lay claim only to what is given him from heaven.’  ‘You yourselves can bear me out: I said I myself am not the Christ, I am the one who has been sent in front of him.  ‘The bride is only for the bridegroom; and yet the bridegroom’ friend, who stands there and listens, is glad when he hears the bridegroom’s voice.  This same joy I feel, and now it is complete.  He must grow greater, I must grow smaller.’

Prayer over the Offerings

O God, who give us the gift of true prayer and of peace, graciously grant that, through this offering, we may do fitting homage to your divine majesty and, by partaking of the sacred mystery, we may be faithfully united in mind and heart. Through Christ our Lord.

Communion Antiphon : Jn 1: 16

From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.

Prayer after Communion

May your people, O Lord, whom you guide and sustain in many ways, experience, both now and in the future, the remedies which you bestow, that, with the needed solace of things that pass away, they may strive with ever deepened trust for things eternal. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation

The statement: “I want to be Number One!” is the shout of pride of many of us. But history is filled with the sweet and sour stories of some people who achieved their dreams and became number one in their fields. These people were somewhat good at the start of their lives but they ended up in ways we do not want to end up ourselves.   In some parts of the gospel, the apostles were envious of one another. They quarrelled among themselves about “who was the first”. But John the Baptist, in the gospel of today, is different. Even if he has made a name for himself already as the “the Baptist,” he does not resent or get angry when he receives a report that Jesus is also baptising.  He is happy that Jesus is recognized. He said: “This joy of mine has been made complete.” He even encourages his own disciples to follow Jesus by pointing to him as the Lamb of God. He shows his deep humility when he says that ‘he must increase and I must decrease.’
