St. Turibius of Mongrovejo  (1538 – 1606)

He was born in Spain in about 1538 and studied law at the University of Salamanca. He was named bishop of Lima in 1580. He was full of apostolic zeal. He died in Lima on 23 March 1606.

First reading: Numbers 21:4-9

The Israelites left Mount Hor by the road to the Sea of Suph, to skirt the land of Edom. On the way the people lost patience. For there is neither bread nor water here; we are sick of this unsatisfying food.’ At this God sent fiery serpents among the people; their bite brought death to many in Israel. The people came and said to Moses, ‘We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you. Intercede for us with the Lord to save us from these serpents.’ Moses interceded for the people, and the Lord answered him, ‘Make a fiery serpent and put it on a standard. I have told you already: You will die in your sins. Yes, if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.’ So they said to him, ‘Who are you?’ Jesus answered: ‘What I have told you from the outset. Meditation

Though on a faith journey, there certainly are times when we feel tired of following God’s ways, and listening to his instructions every day. God seems to delay and we are so impatient that we do not want to continue anymore. When following our design feels pretty easier than God’s, it means it is time for us to follow Jesus more closely. If we leave his ways, we will fall into sin like the Israelites did. But God loves us so much that he has given us Christ, and when we look to him, we shall be healed.

First reading: Daniel 13:1-9, 15-17, 19-30, 33-62

Susanna was condemned to death. She cried out as loud as she could, ‘Eternal God, you know all secrets and everything before it happens; you know that they have given false evidence against me. And now have I to die, innocent as I am of everything their malice has invented against me?’ The Lord heard her cry and, as she was being led away to die, he roused the holy spirit residing in a young boy named Daniel who began to shout, ‘I am innocent of this woman’s death!’ At which all the people turned to him and asked, ‘What do you mean by these words?’ Standing in the middle of the crowd he replied, ‘Are you so stupid, sons of Israel, as to condemn a daughter of Israel unheard, and without troubling to find out the truth? Go back to the scene of the trial: these men have given false evidence against her.’ All the people hurried back, and the elders said to Daniel, ‘Come and sit with us and tell us what you mean, since God has given you the gifts that elders have.’ Daniel said, ‘Keep the men well apart from each other for I want to question them.’ When the men had been separated, Daniel had one of them brought to him. ‘You have grown old in wickedness,’ he said ‘and now the sins of your earlier days have overtaken you, you with your unjust judgements, your condemnation of the innocent, your acquittal of guilty men, when the Lord has said, “You must not put the innocent and the just to death.” Now then, since you saw her so clearly, tell me what tree you saw them lying under?’ He replied, ‘Under a mastic tree.’ Daniel said, ‘True enough! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God has already received your sentence from him and will slash you in half.’ He dismissed the man, ordered the other to be brought and said to him, ‘Spawn of Canaan, not of Judah, beauty has seduced you, lust has led your heart astray! This is how you have been behaving with the daughters of Israel and they were too frightened to resist; but here is a daughter of Judah who could not stomach your wickedness! Now then, tell me what tree you surprised them under?’ He replied, ‘Under a holm oak.’ Daniel said, ‘True enough! Your lie recoils on your own head: the angel of God is waiting, with a sword to drive home and split you, and destroy the pair of you.’ Then the whole assembly shouted, blessing God, the saviour of those who trust in him. And they turned on the two elders whom Daniel had convicted of false evidence out of their own mouths. As prescribed in the Law of Moses, they sentenced them to the same punishment as they had intended to inflict on their neighbour. They put them to death; the life of an innocent woman was spared that day.

Gospel: John 8:1-11

Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as all the people came to him, he sat down and began to teach them.

The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; and making her stand there in full view of everybody, they said to Jesus, ‘Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery, and Moses has ordered us in the Law to condemn women like this to death by stoning. What have you to say?’ They asked him this as a test, looking for something to use against him. But Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. As they persisted with their question, he looked up and said, ‘If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.’ Then he bent down and wrote on the ground again. When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained standing there. He looked up and said, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ ‘No one, sir,’ she replied. ‘Neither do I condemn you,’ said Jesus ‘go away, and do not sin any more.’

Grant, we pray, O Lord, that, preparing to celebrate the holy mysteries, we may bring before you as the fruit of bodily penance a joyful purity of heart. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation

We are often quick in judging others, when we could even be worse. We may wonder when this woman was caught in the act: did she commit the act alone? And if not, where was her partner? Certainly the law prescribed a lopsided and unjust punitive measure and the leaders were keen at catching any perpetrator. However, Jesus does not condemn, instead he forgives. This is what the leaders did not understand and certainly lacked. Instead of reacting quickly, let us pray for the grace to be able to offer psychological/moral assistance when needed.

Elle faisait partie de ces nobles dames romaines admiratrices de saint Jérôme. Admirative, elle écoutait les leçons d’Ecriture Sainte qu’il donnait à Rome. Devenue veuve, elle distribua ses biens aux pauvres et entra dans un monastère romain dont elle devint la supérieure. Saint Jérôme lui consacrera une lettre dithyrambique.

Prière d’ouverture

Dieu qui nous combles de bénédiction par la richesse infinie de ta grâce, fais-nous quitter ce qui ne peut que vieillir, fais-nous entrer dans ce qui est nouveau, et nous serons préparés à la gloire du Royaume. Par Jésus Christ.

 

Première lecture : Daniel 13, 41c-62

En ces jours-là, le peuple venait de condamner à mort Suzanne. Alors elle cria d’une voix forte : « Dieu éternel, toi qui pénètres les secrets, toi qui connais toutes choses avant qu’elles n’arrivent, tu sais qu’ils ont porté contre moi un faux témoignage. Voici que je vais mourir, sans avoir rien fait de tout ce que leur méchanceté a imaginé contre moi. » Le Seigneur entendit sa voix. Comme on la conduisait à la mort, Dieu éveilla l’esprit de sainteté chez un tout jeune garçon nommé Daniel, qui se mit à crier d’une voix forte : « Je suis innocent de la mort de cette femme!» Tout le peuple se tourna vers lui et on lui demanda: « Que signifie cette parole que tu as prononcée? » Alors, debout au milieu du peuple, il leur dit: « Fils d’Israël, vous êtes donc fous ? Sans interrogatoire, sans recherche de la vérité, vous avez condamné une fille d’Israël. Revenez au tribunal, car ces gens-là ont porté contre elle un faux témoignage. » Tout le peuple revint donc en hâte, et le collège des anciens dit à Daniel : « Viens siéger au milieu de nous et donne-nous des explications, car Dieu a déjà fait de toi un ancien.» Et Daniel leur dit : « Séparez-les bien l’un de l’autre, je vais les interroger.» Quand on les eut séparés, Daniel appela le premier et lui dit : « Toi qui as vieilli dans le mal, tu portes maintenant le poids des péchés que tu as commis autrefois en jugeant injustement : tu condamnais les innocentes tu acquittais les coupables, alors que le Seigneur a dit : “Tu ne feras pas mourir l’innocent et le juste. Eh bien ! si réellement tu as vu cette femme, dis-nous sous quel arbre tu les as vus se donner l’un à l’autre ? » Il répondit: « Sous un sycomore.» Daniel dit : « Voilà justement un mensonge qui te condamne: l’ange de Dieu a reçu un ordre de Dieu, et il va te mettre à mort.» Daniel le renvoya, fit amener l’autre et lui dit : «Tu es de la race de Canaan et non de Juda ! La beauté t’a dévoyé et le désir a perverti ton cœur. C’est ainsi que vous traitiez les filles d’Israël, et, par crainte, elles se donnaient à vous. Mais une fille de Juda n’a pu consentir à votre crime. Dis-moi donc sous quel arbre tu les as vus se donner l’un à l’autre? » Il répondit: « Sous un châtaignier. » Daniel lui dit : «Toi aussi, voilà justement un mensonge qui te condamne : l’ange de Dieu attend, l’épée à la main, pour te châtier, et vous faire exterminer. » Alors toute l’assemblée poussa une grande clameur et bénit Dieu qui sauve ceux qui espèrent en lui. Puis elle se retourna contre les deux anciens que Daniel avait convaincus de faux témoignage par leur propre bouche. Conformément à la loi de Moïse, on leur fit subir la peine que leur méchanceté avait imaginée contre leur prochain : on les mit à mort. Et ce jour-là, une vie innocente fut épargnée.

1.      Le Seigneur est mon berger :  je ne manque de rien.  Sur des prés d’herbe fraîche, il me fait reposer.

Évangile :  Jean 8, 1-11

En ce temps-là, Jésus s’en alla au mont des Oliviers. Dès l’aurore, il retourna au Temple. Comme tout le peuple venait à lui, il s’assit et se mit à enseigner. Les scribes et les pharisiens lui amènent une femme qu’on avait surprise en situation d’adultère. Ils la mettent au milieu, et disent à Jésus: « Maître, cette femme a été surprise en flagrant délit d’adultère. Or, dans la Loi, Moïse nous a ordonné de lapider ces femmes-là. Et toi, que dis-tu ? » Ils parlaient ainsi pour le mettre à l’épreuve, afin de pouvoir l’accuser. Mais Jésus s’était baissé et, du doigt, il écrivait sur la terre. Comme on persistait à l’interroger, il se redressa et leur dit : « Celui d’entre vous qui est sans péché, qu’il soit le premier à lui jeter une pierre.» Il se baissa de nouveau et il écrivait sur la terre. Eux, après avoir entendu cela, s’en allaient un par un, en commençant par les plus âgés. Jésus resta seul avec la femme toujours là au milieu. Il se redressa et lui demanda : « Femme, où sont-ils donc? Personne ne t’a condamnée ? » Elle répondit : « Personne, Seigneur. » Et Jésus lui dit : « Moi non plus, je ne te condamne pas. Va, et désormais ne pèche plus. »

 

Prière sur les offrandes :

Accorde-nous, Seigneur, cette grâce : qu’au moment de célébrer l’Eucharistie, les renoncements imposés à notre corps nous permettent de nous présenter devant toi avec un cœur purifié. Par Jésus.

Méditation

Dans sa   première épitre saint Jean dit : « mes petits-enfants, je vous écris ceci pour que vous ne péchiez pas. Mais si quelqu’un  vient à pécher, nous avons comme avocat auprès du Père Jésus Christ, le Juste » (1Jn 2, 1). Eh bien oui, l’un des textes de l’évangile présentant Jésus dans toute la grandeur de l’avocat qu’il est pour nous, c’est bien l’épisode de la femme adultère. Avocat des sans-défenses ! Avocat, Homme Juste ! Avocat d’amour qui regarde depuis la profondeur de nos âmes ! Jésus dit : « Celui d’entre vous qui est sans péché, qu’il soit le premier à lui jeter une pierre.» … « Femme, où sont-ils donc? Personne ne t’a condamnée ? … Moi non plus, je ne te condamne pas. Va, et désormais ne pèche plus. » Aux jours des sécheresses causées par nos péchés ; aux jours des jugements que nous portons sur les autres, puissions-nous nous rappeler que Dieu, avant d’être un juge, est d’abord notre avocat, notre défenseur. Béni sois-tu Dieu qui sauves ceux qui espèrent en toi ! Amen !

Deuxième lecture : He 5, 7-9

Le Christ, pendant les jours de sa vie dans la chair, offrit, avec un grand cri et dans les larmes, des prières et des supplications à Dieu qui pouvait le sauver de la mort, et il fut exaucé en raison de son grand respect. Bien qu’il soit le Fils, il apprit par ses souffrances l’obéissance et, conduit à sa perfection, il est devenu pour tous ceux qui lui obéissent la cause du salut éternel.

 

Acclamation :

Gloire à toi, Seigneur, gloire à toi. Si quelqu’un veut me servir, qu’il me suive, dit le Seigneur ; et là où moi je suis, là aussi sera mon serviteur.  Gloire à toi, Seigneur, gloire à toi.

 

Evangile : Jn 12, 20-33

En ce temps-là, il y avait quelques Grecs parmi ceux qui étaient montés à Jérusalem pour adorer Dieu pendant la fête de la Pâque. Ils abordèrent Philippe, qui était de Bethsaïde en Galilée, et lui firent cette demande: « Nous voudrions voir Jésus. » Philippe va le dire à André, et tous deux vont le dire à Jésus. Alors Jésus leur déclare: « L’heure est venue où le Fils de l’homme doit être glorifié. Amen, amen, je vous le dis: si le grain de blé tombé en terre ne meurt pas, il reste seul; mais s’il meurt, il porte beaucoup de fruits. Qui aime sa vie la perd; qui s’en détache en ce monde la gardera pour la vie éternelle. Si quelqu’un veut me servir, qu’il me suive; et là où moi je suis, là aussi sera mon serviteur. Si quelqu’un me sert, mon Père l’honorera. Maintenant mon âme est bouleversée. Que vais-je dire? “Père, sauve-moi de cette heure” ? – Mais non ! C’est pour cela que je suis parvenu à cette heure-ci ! Père, glorifie ton nom !» Alors, du ciel vint une voix qui disait: « Je l’ai glorifié et je le glorifierai encore. » En l’entendant, la foule qui se tenait là disait que c’était un coup de tonnerre. D’autres disaient: « C’est un ange qui lui a parlé. » Mais Jésus leur répondit: « Ce n’est pas pour moi qu’il y a eu cette voix, mais pour vous. Maintenant a lieu le jugement de ce monde; maintenant le prince de ce monde va être jeté dehors; et moi, quand j’aurai été élevé de terre, j’attirerai à moi tous les hommes.» Il signifiait par là de quel genre de mort il allait mourir.

Exauce tes serviteurs, Dieu tout-puissant: Tu les as initiés à la foi chrétienne, qu’ils soient purifiés par ce sacrifice. Par Jésus.

Méditation

Jésus n’as pas été glorifié parce qu’il a souffert, il a été glorifié parce qu’il a aimé, même dans la souffrance, jusqu’au sacrifice ultime, la mort : « Il n’y a pas de plus grand amour que de donner sa vie pour ceux qu’on aime. » Le chemin qui a conduit Jésus à la gloire doit aussi être le nôtre. « Si quelqu’un veut me servir, qu’il me suive ; et là ou je suis, là aussi sera mon serviteur. Si quelqu’un me sert, mon Père l’honorera ». Le chemin à suivre n’est pas d’abord un chemin de souffrance, mais celui de l’amour. Parce qu’il est marqué par l’amour, ce chemin n’évite pas la souffrance quand elle se présente. Il ne l’évite pas, car consentir à souffrir pour quelqu’un qu’on aime et continuer à l’aimer au cœur de la souffrance, c’est signifier qu’on aime vraiment et profondément. Le chemin de glorification tracé par Jésus nous invite à garder  un cœur aimant et généreux pour tous ceux et celles qui nous entourent.

Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Ps 42: 1-2

Give me justice, O God, and plead my cause against a nation that is faithless. From the deceitful and cunning rescue me, for you, O God, are my strength.

 

Collect

By your help, we beseech you, Lord our God, may we walk eagerly in that same charity with which, out of love for the world, your Son handed himself over to death. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

 

First reading: Jeremiah 31:31-34

See, the days are coming – it is the Lord who speaks – when I will make a new covenant with the House of Israel (and the House of Judah), but not a covenant like the one I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. They broke that covenant of mine, so I had to show them who was master. It is the Lord who speaks. No, this is the covenant I will make with the House of Israel when those days arrive – it is the Lord who speaks. Deep within them I will plant my Law, writing it on their hearts. Then I will be their God and they shall be my people. There will be no further need for neighbour to try to teach neighbour, or brother to say to brother, ‘Learn to know the Lord!’ No, they will all know me, the least no less than the greatest – it is the Lord who speaks – since I will forgive their iniquity and never call their sin to mind.

 

Psalm 50(51):3-4,12-15

R/     A pure heart create for me, O God.

 

1.      Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offence. O wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin.

2. A pure heart create for me, O God, put a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, nor deprive me of your holy spirit.

3.      Give me again the joy of your help; with a spirit of fervour sustain me, that I may teach transgressors your ways and sinners may return to you.

 

Second reading: Hebrews 5:7-9

During his life on earth, Christ offered up prayer and entreaty, aloud and in silent tears, to the one who had the power to save him out of death, and he submitted so humbly that his prayer was heard. Although he was Son, he learnt to obey through suffering; but having been made perfect, he became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation.

 

Gospel Acclamation: Jn 12:26

Glory to you, O Christ, you are the Word of God! Whoever serves me must follow me, says the Lord; and where I am, there also will my servant be. Glory to you, O Christ, you are the Word of God!

 

Gospel: John 12:20-33

Among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. These approached Philip, who came from Bethsaida in Galilee, and put this request to him, ‘Sir, we should like to see Jesus.’ Philip went to tell Andrew, and Andrew and Philip together went to tell Jesus. Jesus replied to them: ‘Now the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I tell you, most solemnly, unless a wheat grain falls on the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. Anyone who loves his life loses it; anyone who hates his life in this world will keep it for the eternal life. If a man serves me, he must follow me, wherever I am, my servant will be there too. If anyone serves me, my Father will honour him. Now my soul is troubled. What shall I say: Father, save me from this hour? But it was for this very reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name! A voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.’ People standing by, who heard this, said it was a clap of thunder; others said, ‘It was an angel speaking to him.’ Jesus answered, ‘It was not for my sake that this voice came, but for yours. ‘Now sentence is being passed on this world; now the prince of this world is to be overthrown. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I shall draw all men to myself.’ By these words he indicated the kind of death he would die.

 

Prayer over the Offerings

Hear us, almighty God, and, having instilled in your servants the teachings of the Christian faith, graciously purify them by the working of this sacrifice. Through Christ our Lord.

 

Communion Antiphon

Amen, Amen I say to you: Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains a single grain. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.

 

Prayer after Communion

We pray, almighty God, that we may always be counted among the members of Christ, in whose Body and Blood we have communion. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

 

Prayer over the People

Bless, O Lord, your people, who long for the gift of your mercy, and grant that what, at your prompting, they desire they may receive by your generous gift. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

 

 

Meditation

Many of us find it difficult to help and sacrifice for others. We must give up something to gain another. That is what happened to Christ; He died and rose again for us to have salvation. When people in need, we can decide to pray for them, grant them psychological assistance, or whatever form of assistance is required. If we do not sacrifice, there is no gain for us and them. So, unless we sacrifice something as Christ did, we cannot save a soul in need, not even ourselves.
