St. Volusian
He was bishop of Tours in France. A senator at Tours, he was initially married, supposedly to a most unpleasant wife. Named bishop of the city in 488, he was forced to leave the see in 496 by the Arian Visigoths, and went to Spain. He died perhaps in Toulouse, or in Spain, possibly as a martyr.

First reading : Hebrews 5:1-10
Every high priest has been taken out of mankind and is appointed to act for men in their relations with God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins; and so he can sympathise with those who are ignorant or uncertain because he too lives in the limitations of weakness. That is why he has to make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. No one takes this honour on himself, but each one is called by God, as Aaron was. Nor did Christ give himself the glory of becoming high priest, but he had it from the one who said to him: You are my son, today I have become your father, and in another text: You are a priest of the order of Melchizedek, and for ever. During his life on earth, he offered up prayer and entreaty, aloud and in silent tears, to the one who had the power to save him out of death, and he submitted so humbly that his prayer was heard. Although he was Son, he learnt to obey through suffering; but having been made perfect, he became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation and was acclaimed by God with the title of high priest of the order of Melchizedek.

One day when John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, some people came to Jesus and said to him, ‘Why is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?’ Jesus replied, ‘Surely the bridegroom’s attendants would never think of fasting while the bridegroom is still with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they could not think of fasting. But the time will come for the bridegroom to be taken away from them, and then, on that day, they will fast. No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak; if he does, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and the tear gets worse. And nobody puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins too. No! New wine, fresh skins!’

Meditation
We see actors play different roles in a movie. Usually, the role presents a personality very different from what the actor is in real life. Sometimes we tend to live out our Christian calling as if we were acting in a movie. We seek to imitate one saint or another, not by internalising the virtues of the saint but simply acting out the life of the saint. This does not help us to improve in our Christian living, for we may spend hours at prayer and adoration but still relate with our brothers and sisters in a way that is not Christian at all.

À l’intérieur du monastère, elle cherchait les tâches les plus rudes et les plus humbles. De sa propre initiative, elle s’imposait une rude ascèse.

Première lecture : He 5, 1-10
Tout grand prêtre est pris parmi les hommes ; il est établi pour intervenir en faveur des hommes dans leurs relations avec Dieu ; il doit offrir des dons et des sacrifices pour les péchés. Il est capable de compréhension envers ceux qui commettent des fautes par ignorance ou par égarement, car il est, lui aussi, rempli de faiblesse; et, à cause de cette faiblesse, il doit offrir des sacrifices pour ses propres péchés comme pour ceux du peuple. On ne s’attribue pas cet honneur à soi- même, on est appelé par Dieu, comme Aaron. Il en est bien ainsi pour le Christ : il ne s’est pas donné à lui-même la gloire de devenir grand prêtre ; il l’a reçue de Dieu, qui lui a dit : Tu es mon Fils, moi, aujourd’hui, je t’ai engendré, car il lui dit aussi dans un autre psaume : Tu es prêtre de l’ordre de Melkisédek pour l’éternité. Pendant les jours de sa vie dans la chair, il offrit, avec un grand cri et dans les larmes, des prières et des supplications à Dieu qui pouvait le sauver de la mort, et il fut exaucé en raison de son grand respect. Bien qu’il soit le Fils, il apprit par ses souffrances l’obéissance et, conduit à sa perfection, il est devenu pour tous ceux qui lui obéissent la cause du salut éternel, car Dieu l’a proclamé grand prêtre de l’ordre de Melkisédek.

En ce temps- là, comme les disciples de Jean le Baptiste et les pharisiens jeûnaient, on vint demander à Jésus : « Pourquoi, alors que les disciples de Jean et les disciples des Pharisiens jeûnent, tes disciples ne jeûnent- ils pas ? » Jésus leur dit : « Les invités de la noce pourraient- ils jeûner, pendant que l’Époux est avec eux ? Tant qu’ils ont l’Époux avec eux, ils ne peuvent pas jeûner. Mais des jours viendront où l’Époux leur sera enlevé ; alors, ce jour- là, ils jeûneront. Personne ne raccommode un vieux vêtement avec une pièce d’étoffe neuve ; autrement le morceau neuf ajouté tire sur le vieux tissu et la déchirure s’agrandit. Ou encore, personne ne met du vin nouveau dans de vieilles outres ; car alors, le vin fera éclater les outres, et l’on perd à la fois le vin et les outres.
Seigneur, accorde-nous la grâce de vraiment participer à cette eucharistie ; Car chaque fois qu’est célébré ce sacrifice en mémorial, c’est l’œuvre de notre Rédemption qui s’accomplit. Par Jésus.

Le vin nouveau dans des outres neuves. Voilà un appel à une ouverture à l’accueil des nouvelles données de l’existence dans une attitude de discernement sans cesse renouvelée. La quête de Dieu se fait avec des catégories mentales et religieuses qui, bien souvent, ont besoin d’être renouvelées au risque de tomber dans la désuétude ou le non-sens. C’est tout le défi de l’aggiornamento ou du renforcement des capacités. La formation continue permanente, ou encore pour la vie, constitue une vraie opportunité pour éviter de sombrer dans un passéisme qui a du mal à exprimer sa pertinence dans un contexte distinct. La voie de la sagesse demande à ce que des catégories nouvelles de l’existence soient assumées avec la vérité du discernement évangélique.

En ces jours-là, le jeune Samuel était couché dans le temple du Seigneur à Silo, où se trouvait l’arche de Dieu. Le Seigneur appela Samuel, qui répondit:« Me voici ! » Il courut vers le prêtre Éli, et il dit : « Tu m’as appelé, me voici. » Éli répondit :« Je n’ai pas appelé. Retourne te coucher. » L’enfant alla se coucher. De nouveau, le Seigneur appela Samuel. Et Samuel se leva. Il alla auprès d’Éli, et il dit : « Tu m’as appelé, me voici. » Éli répondit : « Je n’ai pas appelé, mon fils. Retourne te coucher.» Samuel ne connaissait pas encore le Seigneur, et la parole du Seigneur ne lui avait pas encore été révélée. De nouveau, le Seigneur appela Samuel. Celui-ci se leva. Il alla auprès d’Éli, et il dit : « Tu m’as appelé, me voici. » Alors Éli comprit que c’était le Seigneur qui appelait l’enfant, et il lui dit : « Va te recoucher, et s’il t’appelle, tu diras : “Parle, Seigneur, ton serviteur écoute.” » Samuel alla se recoucher à sa place habituelle. Le Seigneur vint, il se tenait là et il appela comme les autres fois : « Samuel ! Samuel ! » Et Samuel répondit : « Parle, ton serviteur écoute. » Samuel grandit. Le Seigneur était avec lui, et il ne laissa aucune de ses paroles sans effet.

Deuxième lecture : 1 Co 6, 13c-15a. 17-20
Frères, le corps n’est pas pour la débauche, il est pour le Seigneur, et le Seigneur est pour le corps ; et Dieu, par sa puissance, a ressuscité le Seigneur et nous ressuscitera nous aussi. Ne le savez-vous pas ? Vos corps sont les membres du Christ. Celui qui s’unit au Seigneur ne fait avec lui qu’un seul esprit. Fuyez la débauche. Tous les péchés que l’homme peut commettre
sont extérieurs à son corps ; mais l’homme qui se livre à la débauche commet un péché contre son propre corps. Ne le savez-vous pas ? Votre corps est un sanctuaire de l’Esprit Saint, lui qui est en vous et que vous avez reçu de Dieu ; vous ne vous appartenez plus à vous-mêmes, car vous avez été achetés à grand prix. Rendez donc gloire à Dieu dans votre corps.

En ce temps-là, Jean le Baptiste se trouvait avec deux de ses disciples. Posant son regard sur Jésus qui allait et venait, il dit : « Voici l’Agneau de Dieu. » Les deux disciples entendirent ce qu’il disait, et ils suivirent Jésus. Se retournant, Jésus vit qu’ils le suivaient, et leur dit : « Que cherchez-vous ? » Ils lui répondirent : « Rabbi – ce qui veut dire : Maître –, où demeures-tu ? » Il leur dit : « Venez, et vous verrez. » Ils allèrent donc, ils virent où il demeurait, et ils restèrent auprès de lui ce jour-là. C’était vers la dixième heure (environ quatre heures de l’après-midi). André, le frère de Simon-Pierre, était l’un des deux disciples qui avaient entendu la parole de Jean et qui avaient suivi Jésus. Il trouve d’abord Simon, son propre frère, et lui dit : « Nous avons trouvé le Messie » – ce qui veut dire : Christ. André amena son frère à Jésus. Jésus posa son regard sur lui et dit : « Tu es Simon, fils de Jean ; tu t’appelleras Kèphas » – ce qui veut dire : Pierre.

L’appel à la conversion va de pair avec l’acceptation de la Bonne Nouvelle. Convertissez-vous et croyez à l’Evangile sont des appels concomitants. Il s’agit, pour ainsi dire, d’accueillir ces deux réalités intrinsèquement liées dans la dynamique de notre vie de foi. Une conversion sans accueil de l’Evangile n’est pas chrétienne. Aussi, accueillir l’Evangile sans conversion est un leurre. L’Evangile de ce jour nous emmène à faire de la conversion une jumelle de l’accueil de la Bonne Nouvelle. Ce faisant, un supplément qualitatif dans la vie des fidèles emmènerait beaucoup de personnes encore hésitantes à embrasser le chemin de la vie chrétienne, voie du vrai bonheur pour l’humanité.

- I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me; he heard my cry. He put a new song into my mouth, praise of our God.
- You do not ask for sacrifice and offerings, but an open ear. You do not ask for holocaust and victim. Instead, here am I.
- In the scroll of the book it stands written that I should do your will. My God, I delight in your law in the depth of my heart.
- Your justice I have proclaimed in the great assembly. My lips I have not sealed; you know it, O Lord.
Second reading : 1 Corinthians 6:13-15,17-20
The body is not meant for fornication: it is for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. God, who raised the Lord from the dead, will by his power raise us up too. You know, surely, that your bodies are members making up the body of Christ; do you think I can take parts of Christ’s body and join them to the body of a prostitute? Never! But anyone who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him. Keep away from fornication. All the other sins are committed outside the body; but to fornicate is to sin against your own body. Your body, you know, is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you since you received him from God. You are not your own property; you have been bought and paid for. That is why you should use your body for the glory of God.

Gospel: John 1:35-42
As John stood with two of his disciples, Jesus passed, and John stared hard at him and said, ‘Look, there is the lamb of God.’ Hearing this, the two disciples followed Jesus. Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, ‘What do you want?’ They answered, ‘Rabbi,’ – which means Teacher – ‘where do you live?’ ‘Come and see,’ he replied; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him the rest of that day. It was about the tenth hour. One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. Early next morning, Andrew met his brother and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ – which means the Christ – and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked hard at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John; you are to be called Cephas’ – meaning Rock.

Meditation
The other gospels present an automatic response from Andrew and Simon when they are called by Christ (Cf. Matthew 4:18-22, Mark 1:16-20, Luke 5:2-11). Today, we are presented with the account of the gospel of John. Here, Andrew follows Jesus out of curiosity and then brings his brother Simon to Jesus. The essential thing is not the details of the call but the message John sends out. Does our following of Jesus improve our relationship with our brothers and sisters? If no, then we definitely need to review our concept of discipleship as far as Jesus is concerned.

The word of God is something alive and active: it cuts like any double-edged sword but more finely: it can slip through the place where the soul is divided from the spirit, or joints from the marrow; it can judge the secret emotions and thoughts. No created thing can hide from him; everything is uncovered and open to the eyes of the one to whom we must give account of ourselves. Since in Jesus, the Son of God, we have the supreme high priest who has gone through to the highest heaven, we must never let go of the faith that we have professed. For it is not as if we had a high priest who was incapable of feeling our weaknesses with us; but we have one who has been tempted in every way that we are, though he is without sin. Let us be confident, then, in approaching the throne of grace, that we shall have mercy from him and find grace when we are in need of help.

- The law of the Lord is perfect, it revives the soul. The rule of the Lord is to be trusted, it gives wisdom to the simple.

Meditation
Jesus makes his intentions clear: he is out to save sinners, since the righteous have already secured their salvation. This is not a license to sin in order that Jesus may save us. No! As followers of Jesus, we do not assume or presume righteousness. We must work for perfection in all that we do.
