Saint Stanislaus, Bishop, Martyr 1036 – 1079
White
He was born in Poland in 1036. He became bishop of Krakow 1072. He ruled the church as a good shepherd and gave help to the poor. He was murdered as he was celebrating Mass on 8 May 1079.
Entrance Antiphon
This holy man fought to the death for the law of his God and did not fear the words of the godless, for he was built on solid rock.
Collect
O God, for whose honour the Bishop Saint Stanislaus fell beneath the swords of his persecutors, grant, we pray, that we may persevere strong in faith even until death. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Acts 5:27-33
When the officials had brought the apostles in to face the Sanhedrin, the high priest demanded an explanation. ‘We gave you a formal warning’ he said ‘not to preach in this name, and what have you done? You have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and seem determined to fix the guilt of this man’s death on us.’ In reply Peter and the apostles said, ‘Obedience to God comes before obedience to men; it was the God of our ancestors who raised up Jesus, but it was you who had him executed by hanging on a tree. By his own right hand God has now raised him up to be leader and saviour, to give repentance and forgiveness of sins through him to Israel. We are witnesses to all this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.’ This so infuriated them that they wanted to put them to death.

The Lord turns his eyes to the just and his ears to their appeal. They call and the Lord hears and rescues them in all their distress.
The Lord is close to the broken-hearted; those whose spirit is crushed he will save. Many are the trials of the just man but from them all the Lord will rescue him.

Gospel: John 3:31-36
John the Baptist said to his disciples: ‘He who comes from above is above all others; he who is born of the earth is earthly himself and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven bears witness to the things he has seen and heard, even if his testimony is not accepted; though all who do accept his testimony are attesting the truthfulness of God, since he whom God has sent speaks God’s own words: God gives him the Spirit without reserve. The Father loves the Son and has entrusted everything to him. Anyone who believes in the Son has eternal life, but anyone who refuses to believe in the Son will never see life: the anger of God stays on him.’

We have received your heavenly gifts, rejoicing at this feast day, O Lord; grant, we pray, that we, who in this divine banquet proclaim the Death of your Son, may merit to be partakers with the holy Martyrs in his Resurrection and his glory. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
The story of the apostles before the court displays the outstanding characteristics of the men of God. They were men of principle, and their ruling principle is that obedience to God must come first in all circumstances. They never asked, “Is this course of life safe?” Instead, they asked, “Is this what God wants me to do?” They had a clear idea of their function. They knew that they were witnesses to Christ. John is also a witness to Jesus by calling for faith in the works of Jesus. It is impossible to stop a man like that because it is impossible to stop the truth. Easter brings with it the courage shown by the Apostles to face life’s difficulties and challenges with a profound trust in God’s love and an awareness of the constant presence of the Holy Spirit in all that we do.

Saint Michael de Sanctis

He was born in Catalonia, Spain around 1591. St. Michael de Sanctis is noted in the Roman Martyrology as being “remarkable for innocence of life, wonderful penitence, and love for God.”

As we recall year by year the mysteries by which, through the restoration of its original dignity, human nature has received the hope of rising again, we earnestly beseech your mercy, Lord, that what we celebrate in faith we may possess in unending love. First reading : Acts 5:17-26
The high priest intervened with all his supporters from the party of the Sadducees. Prompted by jealousy, they arrested the apostles and had them put in the common gaol. But at night the angel of the Lord opened the prison gates and said as he led them out, ‘Go and stand in the Temple, and tell the people all about this new Life.’ They did as they were told; they went into the Temple at dawn and began to preach. When the high priest arrived, he and his supporters convened the Sanhedrin – this was the full Senate of Israel – and sent to the gaol for them to be brought. But when the officials arrived at the prison they found they were not inside, so they went back and reported, ‘We found the gaol securely locked and the warders on duty at the gates, but when we unlocked the door we found no one inside.’ When the captain of the Temple and the chief priests heard this news they wondered what this could mean. Then a man arrived with fresh news. ‘At this very moment’ he said, ‘the men you imprisoned are in the Temple. They are standing there preaching to the people.’ The captain went with his men and fetched them. They were afraid to use force in case the people stoned them.

No one who believes in him will be condemned; but whoever refuses to believe is condemned already, because he has refused to believe in the name of God’s only Son. Meditation
“How precious must man be in the eyes of the Creator, if he gained so great a Redeemer, and if God ‘gave his only Son’ in order that man ‘should not perish but have eternal life.’” These beautiful words from Saint John Paul II summarise our Gospel today. We read that “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son”. This is the summary of the entire Gospel. Jesus asks sinners to accept and rejoice when he says, “repent and believe the gospel.” Each of us is invited to forsake his sins and take that God loves him so much that He gave his only Son for him/her. This Gospel shows that God is more interested in our salvation than our damnation.

Confirm in our minds the mysteries of the true faith, we pray, O Lord, so that, confessing that he who was conceived of the Virgin Mary is true God and true man, we may, through the saving power of his Resurrection, merit to attain eternal joy. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will cover you.’ Mary herself was distraught at this message because it sounded so mysterious. Mary summarised all her confusion and fear by saying, ‘I am the handmaid of the Lord; let what you have said be done to me.’ It was a perfect surrender and the noblest act of faith. The quality of her surrender was so great that she never withdrew her consent, even at the darkest consequence of her ‘yes’. She was unaware how far her ‘yes’ would completely change her hopes, plans, and life’s course. Yet she had the humility to listen to the message, the faith to believe it was God’s word, and the courage to obey it. She kept up her surrender at the annunciation up to the foot of the Cross without a trail of regret or sorrow. Our Christian faith is this never-ending event of an encounter with God made present in the maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This mystery of God becoming man is not an event that took place more than a thousand years ago. It continues today. Here and now, God asks us to embody him in our world.

The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul; no one claimed for his own use anything that he had, as everything they owned was held in common. None of their members was ever in want, as all those who owned land or houses would sell them, and bring the money from them, to present it to the apostles; it was then distributed to any members who might be in need.

The disciples were filled with joy when they saw the Lord, and he said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. ‘As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.’ After saying this he breathed on them and said: ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those whose sins you retain, they are retained.’
Thomas, called the Twin, who was one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. When the disciples said, ‘We have seen the Lord’, he answered, ‘Unless I see the holes that the nails made in his hands and can put my finger into the holes they made, and unless I can put my hand into his side, I refuse to believe.’ Eight days later the disciples were in the house again and Thomas was with them. The doors were closed, but Jesus came in and stood among them. ‘Peace be with you’ he said. Then he spoke to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; look, here are my hands. Give me your hand; put it into my side. Doubt no longer but believe.’ Thomas replied, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him: ‘You believe because you can see me. Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe.’ There were many other signs that Jesus worked and the disciples saw, but they are not recorded in this book. These are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing this you may have life through his name.

Accept, O Lord, we pray, the oblations of your people (and of those you have brought to new birth), that, renewed by confession of your name and by Baptism, they may attain unending happiness. Through Christ our Lord.

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that our reception of this paschal Sacrament may have a continuing effect in our minds and hearts. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Everyone wants peace on Earth. After his resurrection, Jesus’ first gift to his followers was the gift of peace. He sensed their distress and calmed their hearts by blowing peace into them. The early Christians in today’s first reading were described as a community that shared their possessions and practised mutual respect. What the world needs now is for people to live together in peace and harmony, sharing everything from their homes to their ideas to their skills. The problem is that people have determined that Jesus’ teachings do not belong in any agreements for world peace. Because of this, what we want most has eluded us for generations. None of our abilities or resources can bring us contentment like Jesus can. When we are willing to be humble and seek him out, he will give us our hearts’ desires.

First reading : Acts 4:13-21
The rulers, elders and scribes were astonished at the assurance shown by Peter and John, considering they were uneducated laymen; and they recognised them as associates of Jesus; but when they saw the man who had been cured standing by their side, they could find no answer. So they ordered them to stand outside while the Sanhedrin had a private discussion. ‘What are we going to do with these men?’ they asked. ‘It is obvious to everybody in Jerusalem that a miracle has been worked through them in public, and we cannot deny it. But to stop the whole thing spreading any further among the people, let us caution them never to speak to anyone in this name again.’ So they called them in and gave them a warning on no account to make statements or to teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John retorted, ‘You must judge whether in God’s eyes it is right to listen to you and not to God. We cannot promise to stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard.’ The court repeated the warnings and then released them; they could not think of any way to punish them, since all the people were giving glory to God for what had happened.

Gospel : Mark 16:9-15
Having risen in the morning on the first day of the week, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala from whom he had cast out seven devils. She then went to those who had been his companions, and who were mourning and in tears, and told them. But they did not believe her when they heard her say that he was alive and that she had seen him. After this, he showed himself under another form to two of them as they were on their way into the country. These went back and told the others, who did not believe them either. Lastly, he showed himself to the Eleven themselves while they were at table. He reproached them for their incredulity and obstinacy, because they had refused to believe those who had seen him after he had risen. And he said to them, ‘Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation.’

Look with kindness upon your people, O Lord, and grant, we pray, that those you were pleased to renew by eternal mysteries may attain in their flesh the incorruptible glory of the resurrection. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
Peter said, “It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.” Based on this faith, Jesus instructed, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” Faith puts us on a mission. Faith is not only something you ‘have’ but something you ‘do’. Faith healed the person with paralysis. Faith has the ultimate victory over evil. The Sanhedrin tries to intimidate Peter and John to get them to stop this talk about the dead teacher. But they discover it is hopeless to stem the excitement around the healed paralytic. An act of faith is not shutting off our brains. An act of faith is the prayer of the man who asked Jesus to heal his son, “I do believe; help my unbelief.” Pray for faith sincerely and unceasingly. Your Father, who gives good gifts to those who ask, will surely give you the Holy Spirit.

He was born in Valencia and joined the Dominicans at the age of 17.Among others, he preached to the Jews, of whom some 25,000 were converted to Christianity. He died in 5 April 1419.

First reading : Acts 4:1-12
While Peter and John were talking to the people the priests came up to them, accompanied by the captain of the Temple and the Sadducees. They were extremely annoyed at their teaching the people the doctrine of the resurrection from the dead by proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus. They arrested them, but as it was already late, they held them till the next day. But many of those who had listened to their message became believers, the total number of whom had now risen to something like five thousand. The next day the rulers, elders and Scribes had a meeting in Jerusalem with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, Jonathan, Alexander and all the members of the high-priestly families. They made the prisoners stand in the middle and began to interrogate them, ‘By what power, and by whose name have you men done this?’ Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, addressed them, ‘Rulers of the people, and elders! If you are questioning us today about an act of kindness to a cripple, and asking us how he was healed, then I am glad to tell you all, and would indeed be glad to tell the whole people of Israel, that it was by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, the one you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by this name and by no other that this man is able to stand up perfectly healthy, here in your presence, today. This is the stone rejected by you the builders, but which has proved to be the keystone. For of all the names in the world given to men, this is the only one by which we can be saved.’

Gospel : John 21:1-14
Jesus showed himself again to the disciples. It was by the Sea of Tiberias, and it happened like this: Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee and two more of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said, ‘I’m going fishing.’ They replied, ‘We’ll come with you.’ They went out and got into the boat but caught nothing that night. It was light by now and there stood Jesus on the shore, though the disciples did not realise that it was Jesus. Jesus called out, ‘Have you caught anything, friends?’ And when they answered, ‘No’, he said, ‘Throw the net out to starboard and you’ll find something.’ So they dropped the net, and there were so many fish that they could not haul it in. The disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord.’ At these words ‘It is the Lord’, Simon Peter, who had practically nothing on, wrapped his cloak round him and jumped into the water. The other disciples came on in the boat, towing the net and the fish; they were only about a hundred yards from land. As soon as they came ashore they saw that there was some bread there, and a charcoal fire with fish cooking on it. Jesus said, ‘Bring some of the fish you have just caught.’ Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore, full of big fish, one hundred and fifty-three of them; and in spite of there being so many the net was not broken. Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ None of the disciples was bold enough to ask, ‘Who are you?’; they knew quite well it was the Lord. Jesus then stepped forward, took the bread and gave it to them, and the same with the fish. This was the third time that Jesus showed himself to the disciples after rising from the dead.
Prayer over the Offerings
Perfect within us, O Lord, we pray, the solemn exchange brought about by these paschal offerings, that we may be drawn from earthly desires to a longing for the things of heaven. Through Christ our Lord.

Jesus said to his disciples: Come and eat. And he took bread and gave it to them, alleluia.
Prayer after Communion
Keep safe, O Lord, we pray, those whom you have saved by your kindness that, redeemed by the Passion of your Son, they may rejoice in his Resurrection. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
Peter’s life has changed due to his encounters with the risen Jesus. The same Peter who denied Jesus now preaches to the Sanhedrin. What a change, from denying Jesus to preaching about Jesus to the Sanhedrin. Again, Peter is dragging the net full of fish to the shore because he has met the risen Jesus many times, and as a result, he has changed. It is impossible to meet Jesus and remain the same. There have been times when we, like Peter, failed the Lord. He experienced the power of Christ’s forgiveness, which changed his life. Everything else he did after Christ forgave him of his sins and commanded him to take care of his sheep was to show his appreciation for the forgiveness he received. Christ’s forgiveness motivated Peter to proclaim him in the presence of the Sanhedrin. Christ’s forgiveness should also urge us to proclaim him without fear to the whole world.
