SAINT Birinus

Saint Birinus was sent to England as a missionary by Pope Honourius I about the year 634. He died about 650 and the main Church of the West Saxons which he had established at Dorchester-on-Thames was later moved to Winchester, as were the relics of Saint Birinus.

Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Zec 14: 5, 7

Behold, the Lord will come, and all his holy ones with him; and on that day there will be a great light.

Collect

Look with favour, Lord God, on our petitions, and in our trials grant us your compassionate help, that, consoled by the presence of your Son, whose coming we now await, we may be tainted no longer by the corruption of former ways. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading: Isaiah 11: 1-10

A shoot springs from the stock of Jesse, a scion thrusts from his roots: on him the spirit of the Lord rests, a spirit of wisdom and insight, a spirit of counsel and power, a spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. (The fear of the Lord is his breath.) He does not judge by appearances, he gives no verdict on hearsay, but judges the wretched with integrity, and with equity gives a verdict for the poor of the land. His word is a rod that strikes the ruthless, his sentences bring death to the wicked. Integrity is the loincloth round his waist, faithfulness the belt about his hips. The wolf lives with the lamb, the panther lies down with the kid, calf and lion feed together, with a little boy to lead them. The cow and the bear make friends, their young lie down together. The lion eats straw like the ox. The infant plays over the cobra’s hole; into the viper’s lair the young child puts his hand. They do no hurt, no harm, on all my holy mountain, for the country is filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters swell the sea. That day, the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples. It will be sought out by the nations and its home will be glorious.

Psalm 71(72): 1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17

R/ In his days justice shall flourish, and peace till the moon fails.

O God, give your judgement to the king, to a king’s son your justice, that he may judge your people in justice and your poor in right judgement.

In his days justice shall flourish and peace till the moon fails. He shall rule from sea to sea, from the Great River to earth’s bounds.

For he shall save the poor when they cry and the needy who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor.

May his name be blessed for ever and endure like the sun. Every tribe shall be blessed in him, all nations bless his name.

Gospel Acclamation: Ps 84:8

Alleluia, alleluia! Let us see, O Lord, your mercy and give us your saving help. Alleluia!

Gospel: Luke 10:21-24

Filled with joy by the Holy Spirit, Jesus said: “I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to mere children. Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do. Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” Then turning to his disciples he spoke to them in private, “Happy the eyes that see what you see, for I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.”

Prayer over the Offerings

Be pleased, O Lord, with our humble prayers and offerings, and, since we have no merits to plead our cause, come, we pray, to our rescue with the protection of your mercy. Through Christ our Lord.

Communion Antiphon: Cf. 2 Tm

The Just Judge will bestow a crown of righteousness on those who eagerly await his coming.

Prayer after Communion

Replenished by the food of spiritual nourishment, we humbly beseech you, O Lord, that, through our partaking in this mystery, you may teach us to judge wisely the things of earth and hold firm to the things of heaven. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation

A truth is being revealed to us in today’s Gospel : “Happy the eyes that see what you see, for I tell you that many prophets wanted to see what you see, and never saw it ; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.” Jesus proclaimed his disciples blessed because they saw and heard what he who came from the Father did and said respectively. Thus, the condition for the happiness of the disciples is to open their eyes to what the master shows them. The happiness of the disciple resides in listening to the teachings of his master. If we are not happy in our lives as Christians, then we should perhaps question our view of reality.

SAINT  John Damascene,

priest, Doctor

He was born of a Christian family in Damascus in the second half of the seventh century. He wrote many theological treatises in a dangerously clear and accessible style. Sometimes known as “the last of the Church Fathers,” he was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII in 1883.

Entrance Antiphon: Jer 31: 10

Hear the word of the Lord, O nations; declare it to the distant lands: Behold, our Saviour will come; you need no longer fear.

Collect

Keep us alert, we pray, O Lord our God, as we await the advent of Christ your Son, so that, when he comes and knocks, he may find us watchful in prayer and exultant in his praise. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading: Isaiah 2:1-5

The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz, concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In the days to come the mountain of the Temple of the Lord shall tower above the mountains and be lifted higher than the hills. All the nations will stream to it, peoples without number will come to it; and they will say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the Temple of the God of Jacob that he may teach us his ways so that we may walk in his paths; since the Law will go out from Zion, and the oracle of the Lord from Jerusalem.” He will wield authority over the nations and adjudicate between many peoples; these will hammer their swords into ploughshares, their spears into sickles. Nation will not lift sword against nation, there will be no more training for war. O House of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord.

Psalm 121(122): 1-2, 4-5, 6-9

R/ I rejoiced when I heard them say: ‘Let us go to God’s house.’

I rejoiced when I heard them say: ‘Let us go to God’s house.’ And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem.

It is there that the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord. For Israel’s law it is, there to praise the Lord’s name. There were set the thrones of judgement of the house of David.

For the peace of Jerusalem pray: ‘Peace be to your homes! May peace reign in your walls, in your palaces, peace!’

For love of my brethren and friends I say: ‘Peace upon you!’ For love of the house of the Lord I will ask for your good.

Gospel Acclamation: Ps79:4

Alleluia, alleluia! God of hosts, bring us back: let your face shine on us and we shall be saved. Alleluia!

Gospel: Matthew 8: 5-11

When Jesus went into Capernaum a centurion came up and pleaded with him. “Sir,” he said, “my servant is lying at home paralysed, and in great pain.” “I will come myself and cure him” said Jesus. The centurion replied, “Sir, I am not worthy to have you under my roof; just give the word and my servant will be cured. For I am under authority myself, and have soldiers under me; and I say to one man: Go, and he goes; to another: Come here, and he comes; to my servant: Do this, and he does it.” When Jesus heard this he was astonished and said to those following him, “I tell you solemnly, nowhere in Israel have I found faith like this. And I tell you that many will come from east and west to take their places with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob at the feast in the kingdom of heaven.”

Prayer over the Offerings

Accept, we pray, O Lord, these offerings we make, gathered from among your gifts to us, and may what you grant us to celebrate devoutly here below gain for us the prize of eternal redemption. Through Christ our Lord.

Communion Antiphon: Ps 105: 4-5; Is 38: 3

Come, O Lord, visit us in peace, that we may rejoice before you with a blameless heart.

Prayer after Communion

May these mysteries, O Lord, in which we have participated, profit us, we pray, for even now, as we walk amid passing things, you teach us by them to love the things of heaven and hold fast to what endures. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation

The faith of the centurion draws our attention our own faith. He a non-Jew, someone considered to be a pagan, recognized Jesus as the one sent by the Father to save, free and liberate humanity. This explains Jesus’ astonishment at the faith of the centurion: « I tell you solemnly, nowhere in Israel have I found faith like this ». The Lord challenges us today. Can he say the same of us at end of today? Whatever be the depth of our pain, of our sins, of our needs, of our worries, can we like the centurion say to the Lord « Say only a word and I shall be healed »? These words which we repeat every day at Mass are not vain. The experience of the centurion shows us that if we pronounce them with faith, the Lord will react and heal us. Let us live up to this challenge of faith today and forever.

Sunday 03 december

1st Sunday of Advent

Psalter week I

Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Ps 24: 1-3

To you, I lift up my soul, O my God. In you, I have trusted; let me not be put to shame. Nor let my enemies exult over me; and let none who hope in you be put to shame.

Collect

Grant your faithful, we pray, almighty God, the resolve to run forth to meet your Christ with righteous deeds at his coming, so that, gathered at his right hand, they may be worthy to possess the heavenly kingdom. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading: Isaiah 63: 16-17, 64: 1, 3-8

You, Lord, yourself are our Father, “Our Redeemer” is your ancient name. Why, Lord, leave us to stray from your ways and harden our hearts against fearing you? Return, for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your inheritance. Oh, that you would tear the heavens open and come down! – at your Presence the mountains would melt. No ear has heard, no eye has seen any god but you act like this for those who trust him. You guide those who act with integrity and keep your ways in mind. You were angry when we were sinners; we had long been rebels against you. We were all like men unclean, all that integrity of ours like filthy clothing. We have all withered like leaves and our sins blew us away like the wind. No one invoked your name or roused himself to catch hold of you. For you hid your face from us and gave us up to the power of our sins. And yet, Lord, you are our Father; we the clay, you the potter, we are all the work of your hand.

Psalm 79 (80): 2-3, 15-16, 18-19

R/ God of hosts, bring us back; let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.

O shepherd of Israel, hear us, shine forth from your cherubim throne. O Lord, rouse up your might, O Lord, come to our help.

God of hosts, turn again, we implore, look down from heaven and see. Visit this vine and protect it, the vine your right hand has planted.

May your hand be on the man you have chosen, the man you have given your strength. And we shall never forsake you again; give us life that we may call upon your name.

Second reading: 1 Corinthians 1:3-9

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ send you grace and peace. I never stop thanking God for all the graces you have received through Jesus Christ. I thank him that you have been enriched in so many ways, especially in your teachers and preachers; the witness to Christ has indeed been strong among you so that you will not be without any of the gifts of the Spirit while you are waiting for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed; and he will keep you steady and without blame until the last day, the day of our Lord Jesus Christ, because God by calling you has joined you to his Son, Jesus Christ; and God is faithful.

Gospel Acclamation: Ps 84: 8

Alleluia, alleluia! Let us see, O Lord, your mercy and give us your saving help. Alleluia!

Gospel: Mark 13: 33-37

Jesus said to his disciples: “Be on your guard, stay awake, because you never know when the time will come. It is like a man travelling abroad: he has gone from home, and left his servants in charge, each with his own task; and he has told the doorkeeper to stay awake. So stay awake, because you do not know when the master of the house is coming, evening, midnight, cockcrow, dawn; if he comes unexpectedly, he must not find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake!”

Prayer over the Offerings

Accept, we pray, O Lord, these offerings we make, gathered from among your gifts to us, and may what you grant us to celebrate devoutly here below gain for us the prize of eternal redemption. Through Christ our Lord.

Communion Antiphon: Ps 84: 13

The Lord will bestow his bounty, and our earth shall yield its increase.

Prayer after Communion

May these mysteries, O Lord, in which we have participated, profit us, we pray, for even now, as we walk amid passing things, you teach us by them to love the things of heaven and hold fast to what endures. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation

We are invited today, dear brothers and sisters, to be attentive as we await the coming of our saviour Jesus Christ. The Gospel is clear on this: “keep watch, for you do not know the moment”. This moment is that of the coming of the master, the son of man. Advent is principally the time to keep watch for the coming of Christ. His coming in the flesh at Christmas, his coming in glory at the end of time, and especially his coming in our daily activities and in our brothers and sisters. This time of waiting can be applied to all Christian life, for the Lord visits us daily. But are we vigilant to his visits? We need concrete preparation before meeting the Lord, and only God can help us to keep watch in prayers as we await his coming. God’s time is now!

SAINT  Bibiana

Her parents were martyred in the persecution of Julian the Apostate, and Bibiana and her sister Demetria were turned over to a woman named Rufina who tried to force her into prostitution. Upon her continued refusal, Bibiana was imprisoned in a mad house, and then flogged to death.

Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Ps 84: 9

The Lord speaks of peace to his people and his holy ones and to those who turn to him.

Collect

Stir up the will of your faithful, we pray, O Lord, that, striving more eagerly to bring your divine work to fruitful completion, they may receive in greater measure the healing remedies your kindness bestows. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading: Daniel 7:15-27

I, Daniel, was deeply disturbed and the visions that passed through my head alarmed me. So I approached one of those who were standing by and asked him to tell me the truth about all this. And in reply he revealed to me what these things meant. “These four great beasts are four kings who will rise from the earth. Those who are granted sovereignty are the saints of the Most High, and the kingdom will be theirs for ever, for ever and ever.” Then I asked to know the truth about the fourth beast, different from all the rest, very terrifying, with iron teeth and bronze claws, eating, crushing and trampling underfoot what remained; and the truth about the ten horns on its head – and why the other horn sprouted and the three original horns fell, and why this horn had eyes and a mouth that was full of boasts, and why it made a greater show than the other horns. This was the horn I had watched making war on the saints and proving the stronger, until the coming of the one of great age who gave judgement in favour of the saints of the Most High, when the time came for the saints to take over the kingdom. This is what he said: “The fourth beast is to be a fourth kingdom on earth, different from all other kingdoms. It will devour the whole earth, trample it underfoot and crush it. As for the ten horns: from this kingdom will rise ten kings, and another after them; this one will be different from the previous ones and will bring down three kings; he is going to speak words against the Most High, and harass the saints of the Most High. He will consider changing seasons and the Law, and the saints will be put into his power for a time, two times, and half a time. But a court will be held and his power will be stripped from him, consumed, and utterly destroyed. And sovereignty and kingship, and the splendours of all the kingdoms under heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Most High. His sovereignty is an eternal sovereignty and every empire will serve and obey him.”

Psalm Daniel 3:82-87

R/ Give glory and eternal praise to him!

Sons of men! Bless the Lord.

Israel! Bless the Lord.

Priests! Bless the Lord.

Servants of the Lord! Bless the Lord.

Spirits and souls of the virtuous! Bless the Lord.

Devout and humble-hearted men! Bless the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation: Mt 24: 42, 44

Alleluia, alleluia! Stay awake and stand ready, because you do not know the hour when the Son of Man is coming. Alleluia!

Gospel: Luke 21: 34-36

Jesus said to his disciples: “Watch yourselves, or your hearts will be coarsened with debauchery and drunkenness and the cares of life, and that day will be sprung on you suddenly, like a trap. For it will come down on every living man on the face of the earth. Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man.”

Prayer over the Offerings

Accept, O Lord, the sacred offerings which at your bidding we dedicate to your name and, in order that through these gifts we may become worthy of your love, grant us unfailing obedience to your commands. Through Christ our Lord.

Communion Antiphon: Ps 116: 1, 2

O praise the Lord, all you nations, for his merciful love towards us is great.

Prayer after Communion

We pray, almighty God, that those to whom you give the joy of participating in divine mysteries may never be parted from you. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation

Jesus speaks to us today about the end of time and warns us against things that can deviate our attention from life in the Spirit. Waiting might be long and tiredness might crop in at any time. So, faced with the diverse demands of the flesh, we might allow ourselves to be led by the evil one into a life of debauchery, drunkenness and the worries or cares of this passing life. What can we do in order to avoid being trapped in this life style? How do we make sure that the day of the Lord does not take us by surprise? Jesus’ response is very clear: Stay awake and pray at all times. Dearly beloved, we are invited to live our Christian identity in a dignifying manner through discernment and prayer.

Entrance Antiphon: Ps 84: 9

The Lord speaks of peace to his people and his holy ones and to those who turn to him.

Collect

Stir up the will of your faithful, we pray, O Lord, that, striving more eagerly to bring your divine work to fruitful completion, they may receive in greater measure the healing remedies your kindness bestows. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading: Daniel 7:2-14

I, Daniel, have been seeing visions in the night. I saw that the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea; four great beasts emerged from the sea, each different from the other. The first was like a lion with eagle’s wings; and as I looked its wings were torn off, and it was lifted from the ground and set standing on its feet like a man; and it was given a human heart. The second beast I saw was different, like a bear, raised up on one of its sides, with three ribs in its mouth, between its teeth. “Up!” Came the command. “Eat quantities of flesh!” After this I looked, and saw another beast, like a leopard, and with four bird’s wings on its flanks; it had four heads, and power was given to it. Next I saw another vision in the visions of the night: I saw a fourth beast, fearful, terrifying, very strong; it had great iron teeth, and it ate, crushed and trampled underfoot what remained. It was different from the previous beasts and had ten horns. While I was looking at these horns, I saw another horn sprouting among them, a little one; three of the original horns were pulled out by the roots to make way for it; and in this horn I saw eyes like human eyes, and a mouth that was full of boasts. As I watched: Thrones were set in place and one of great age took his seat. His robe was white as snow, the hair of his head as pure as wool. His throne was a blaze of flames, its wheels were a burning fire. A stream of fire poured out, issuing from his presence. A thousand waited on him, ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. A court was held and the books were opened. The great things the horn was saying were still ringing in my ears, and as I watched, the beast was killed, and its body destroyed and committed to the flames. The other beasts were deprived of their power, but received a lease of life for a season and a time. I gazed into the visions of the night. And I saw, coming on the clouds of heaven, one like a son of man. He came to the one of great age and was led into his presence. On him was conferred sovereignty, glory and kingship, and men of all peoples, nations and languages became his servants. His sovereignty is an eternal sovereignty which shall never pass away, nor will his empire ever be destroyed.

Psalm Daniel 3:75-81

R/ Give glory and eternal praise to him!

Mountains and hills! Bless the Lord.

Everything that grows on the earth! Bless the Lord.

Springs of water! Bless the Lord.

Seas and rivers! Bless the Lord.

Sea beasts and everything that lives in water! Bless the Lord.

Birds of heaven! All bless the Lord.

Animals wild and tame! All bless the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation: Lk 21: 28

Alleluia, alleluia! Stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand. Alleluia!

Gospel: Luke 21:29-33

Jesus told his disciples a parable: “Think of the fig tree and indeed every tree. As soon as you see them bud, you know that summer is now near. So with you when you see these things happening: know that the kingdom of God is near. I tell you solemnly, before this generation has passed away all will have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”

Meditation

The parable in today’s Gospel exhorts us to use our human capacities to discern signs from God in our lives. Just as we are capable of determining the coming of a new season, we should be able as well to read and understand the signs of God in our lives. God does speak to us in mysterious language. He reveals his Word to us in human language that we are able to understand. This too is an aspect of the mystery of the incarnation of his son. The Gospel invites us today to be attentive to our human experiences. Through them, God addresses his unchangeable word to us, irrespective of our different states of being. May God grant us the grace to listen and put this Word to practice. May He give us the spirit to abide to this word incarnate – Jesus CHRIST.

Thursday 30 November

Saint Andrew, Apostle

Feast

He was born in Bethsaida, in Galilee, and worked as a fisherman. He became one of the first to follow Jesus and introduced his brother, Simon Peter, to him. He became patron saint of Scotland because according to legend some of his bones were brought and buried at the place where the town of St Andrew’s now stands.

Entrance Antiphon: Mt 4: 18-19

Beside the Sea of Galilee, the Lord saw two brothers, Peter and Andrew, and he said to them: Come after me and I will make you fishers of men.

Collect

We humbly implore your majesty, O Lord, that, just as the blessed Apostle Andrew was for your Church a preacher and pastor, so he may be for us a constant intercessor before you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

First reading: Romans 10:9-18

If your lips confess that Jesus is Lord and if you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, then you will be saved. By believing from the heart you are made righteous; by confessing with your lips you are saved. When scripture says: those who believe in him will have no cause for shame, it makes no distinction between Jew and Greek: all belong to the same Lord who is rich enough, however many ask his help, for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But they will not ask his help unless they believe in him, and they will not believe in him unless they have heard of him, and they will not hear of him unless they get a preacher, and they will never have a preacher unless one is sent, but as scripture says: The footsteps of those who bring good news are a welcome sound. Not everyone, of course, listens to the Good News. As Isaiah says: Lord, how many believed what we proclaimed? So faith comes from what is preached, and what is preached comes from the word of Christ. Let me put the question: is it possible that they did not hear? Indeed they did; in the words of the psalm, their voice has gone out through all the earth, and their message to the ends of the world.

Psalm 18(19):2-5

Their word goes forth through all the earth.

The heavens proclaim the glory of God, and the firmament shows forth the work of his hands. Day unto day takes up the story and night unto night makes known the message.

No speech, no word, no voice is heard yet their span extends through all the earth, their words to the utmost bounds of the world.

Gospel Acclamation : Mt 4:19

Alleluia, alleluia! Follow me, says the Lord, and I will make you into fishers of men. Alleluia!

Gospel: Matthew 4:18-22

As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew; they were making a cast in the lake with their net, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” And they left their nets at once and followed him. Going on from there he saw another pair of brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they were in their boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. At once, leaving the boat and their father, they followed him.

Prayer over the Offerings

Grant us, almighty God, that through these offerings, which we bring on the feast day of Saint Andrew, we may please you by what we have brought and be given life by what you have accepted. Through Christ our Lord.

Communion Antiphon: Jn 1: 41-42

Andrew told his brother Simon: We have found the Messiah, the Christ, and he brought him to Jesus.

Prayer after Communion

May communion in your Sacrament strengthen us, O Lord, so that by the example of the blessed Apostle Andrew we, who carry in our body the Death of Christ, may merit to live with him in glory. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

Meditation

From natural fishing (fish) to spiritual fishing (souls), Peter and Andrew, James and his brother John, freely made, at the request of the Lord Jesus, a crucial passage for the rest of their lives. “Immediately, leaving their nets, they followed him.” By turning their backs on their past and accepting to follow the Master of the harvest without detour, these men immediately pass from an ordinary life to an extraordinary life. Yes, every vocation is truly a mystery! That is why it is difficult to pinpoint the criteria for missionary recruitment in the Gospels. If we are attentive, we simply notice that God calls us at his own time as we are, but he invites us to be as he wants us. Only God knows why he needs us! It is not we who have chosen him; it is the other way round. Let us pray for all vocations so that they may have God Himself as their source and foundation.
