Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
The Lateran Basilica was built by the Emperor Constantine on the Lateran Hill in Rome in about 324. In honour of the basilica, “the mother and head of all the churches of the City and the World,” the feast has been extended to the whole Roman Rite as a sign of unity and love towards the See of Peter.

O God, who chose to foreshadow for us the heavenly Jerusalem through the sign of your Church on earth, grant, we pray, that, by our partaking of this Sacrament, we may be made the temple of your grace and may enter the dwelling place of your glory. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The Temple – where the Ark of the Covenant was located – is God’s dwelling place among his people (1Kg 8:10). It is the very heart of the Jewish faith and the centre of the history of the people of Israel. How can merchants of oxen, sheep, doves, and money changers meet there and even settle there? This is blasphemy; desecration! Their mere presence and activities in the Temple testify to their lack of faith. Yes, they lack the basic “fear of God” which is fundamental in the life of every man (cf. Pr 1:7; 9:10). Dear friends, in order to avoid attracting the wrath of God, we must always pay attention to our words and actions in and around the Church. Beware of stealing, lying, invective, slander, misuse of the telephone, etc. especially in front of the Blessed Sacrament. May God always give us the spirit of discernment, the clear vision of what we should do and the strength to accomplish it.

Blessed George Napier
He was born in Oxford and ordained priest in 1596. He worked secretly as a priest in 1603 in Oxfordshire. He was arrested in 1610: the possession of the holy oils and a breviary was considered sufficient evidence of priesthood and he was condemned to death. He was hanged, drawn and quartered at Oxford on 8 November 1610 and beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1929.

Meditation
Being a disciple of Christ is certainly noble but very demanding. It is a preferential option for GOD whom we must know, love and serve. It is also a commitment to a life of sacrifice and a permanent renunciation of self and worldliness. Christians of the present time find it difficult to bear the weight of our crosses, to carry them with faith and follow Christ. However, our salvation depends on our acceptance and determination to authentically follow our Master Jesus who Himself knew how to carry His Cross. No, carrying one’s Cross is not an ordeal! Through the intercession of our respective patron saints, may we gladly follow the Way of the Cross for our salvation and that of the whole world.

SAINT Willibrord
He was the first of the great Anglo-Saxon missionaries to Europe and is remembered not just for his devotion in preaching the Gospel but also for his joyfulness of character and his holiness of life. He died at Echternach in Luxembourg in 739.

Meditation
Dear friends, the Gospel of today introduces us to a meditative reflection on the heavenly banquet. This banquet is present (the Eucharist) and future (the Eschatology). Indeed, we must understand that God does not want his sacred house to be empty; he wants it full. He wants each of us to have a place at his heavenly table. That is why he invites each and every one. Yes, happy are all those who are invited to the Lord’s extraordinary meal and who respond favourably. But unfortunate are those who misuse their freedom, those who lack discernment, who close themselves to the Lord’s call/invitation and take paths contrary to that of eternal life.

All Saints of Africa
Today we celebrate the feast of all the Saints of Africa who, down through the ages, have followed the Lord with courage, love and dedication. Many of these saints are unknown to us, while others are remembered in various countries on account of their exemplary life of discipleship.

Meditation
Once again Jesus speaks to us and challenges us through his Word. Aware of the fact that we often organize receptions, he invites us to think first of all of the “anawim”, i.e. “the poor and disenfranchised” who are the real bridge to Heaven. Inviting the miserable thus becomes a way to go beyond the faithless, to think of eschatological ends and to obtain a place of choice in the Heart of God. In fact, by acting selflessly for the marginalized, we imitate Jesus and also attract the attention of GOD our Father on ourselves. Thus we will be rewarded on the Last Day.

MEDITATION
Once again, the Liturgy of the Word invites us to humility. Better said, it calls us to consistency in our life of faith. Yes, we must live what we teach and teach what we live. This is the secret of all Christian life and even of evangelization. Being witnesses is more interesting than being good preachers/speakers… The Pharisees and scribes themselves remain outside the practice of the Lord’s precepts. Far from making this an interpersonal problem, Jesus simply castigates the behaviour of the religious leaders of his time and even those of the present time who “speak very well” without daring to live their teachings. Hence the IMPERTINENCE or STERILITY of their teachings. Let us become what we teach to others to be and practice what we preach. It is an indisputable proof that we believe it ourselves. Let us convince and evangelize by words and much more by the quality of our actions.

SAINT Charles Borromeo
Charles Borromeo was a leading figure of the Catholic Reformation. He worked on the catechism, the Missal and the Breviary, and reformed his own diocese as well as he could from a distance through trusted deputies. Charles died on 3 November 1584 at the age of 46.
Entrance Antiphon
The Lord chose him for himself as high priest, and, opening his treasure house, made him rich in all good things.

Preserve in the midst of your people, we ask, O Lord, the spirit with which you filled the Bishop Saint Charles Borromeo, that your Church may be constantly renewed and, by conforming herself to the likeness of Christ, may show his face to the world. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Romans 11:1-2,11-12,25-29
Let me put a question: is it possible that God has rejected his people? Of course not. I, an Israelite, descended from Abraham through the tribe of Benjamin, could never agree that God had rejected his people, the people he chose specially long ago. Do you remember what scripture says of Elijah – how he complained to God about Israel’s behaviour? Let me put another question then: have the Jews fallen for ever, or have they just stumbled? Obviously they have not fallen for ever: their fall, though, has saved the pagans in a way the Jews may now well emulate. Think of the extent to which the world, the pagan world, has benefited from their fall and defection – then think how much more it will benefit from the conversion of them all. There is a hidden reason for all this, brothers, of which I do not want you to be ignorant, in case you think you know more than you do. One section of Israel has become blind, but this will last only until the whole pagan world has entered, and then after this the rest of Israel will be saved as well. As scripture says: The liberator will come from Zion, he will banish godlessness from Jacob. And this is the covenant I will make with them when I take their sins away. The Jews are enemies of God only with regard to the Good News, and enemies only for your sake; but as the chosen people, they are still loved by God, loved for the sake of their ancestors. God never takes back his gifts or revokes his choice.

A more distinguished person than you may have been invited, and the person who invited you both may come and say, “Give up your place to this man.” And then, to your embarrassment, you would have to go and take the lowest place. No; when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there, so that, when your host comes, he may say, “My friend, move up higher.” In that way, everyone with you at the table will see you honoured. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the man who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Meditation
The conclusion of this Gospel is wonderful and enriching. Jesus, in fact, uses a parable to give us a simple message: “The path of humility leads to salvation”. Very often, we think that humility is a weakness, a defect or even a shortcoming… Even today, many of us want to occupy the first and best places in public places and environments; it is an honour and a luxury for us to be counted among the V.I.P.’s at a birthday, a celebration, an event, a bereavement, etc.; we try not to mingle with the inferiors, the poor, the little ones and the weak. In the light of Jesus’ teaching, we need to get out of our social complexes to experience Kenosis. Yes, GOD is capable of overthrowing the powerful from their thrones in order to lift up the lowly (1Sam 2:6-7). Let us therefore enrol in this admirable school which seems to belittle us in the eyes of men but which ennobles us in the eyes of GOD.
