Saints Charles Lwanga and his Companions, Martyrs
St Charles Lwanga and his companions became the first martyrs of black Africa under Ugandan king Mwanga. They were executed for being Christians, for rebuking the king for his debauchery and for murdering an Anglican missionary and for “praying from a book”. They died between 1885 and 1887.

As gold in the furnace, the Lord put his chosen to the test; as sacrificial offerings, he took them to himself; and in due time they will be honoured, and grace and peace will be with the elect of God.

O God, who have made the blood of Martyrs the seed of Christians, mercifully grant that the field which is your Church, watered by the blood shed by Saints Charles Lwanga and his companions, may be fertile and always yield you an abundant harvest. Or who gave you authority to do these things?” Jesus said to them, “I will ask you a question, only one; answer me and I will tell you my authority for acting like this. John’s baptism: did it come from heaven, or from man? Answer me that.” And they argued it out this way among themselves: “If we say from heaven, he will say, ‘Then why did you refuse to believe him?’ But dare we say from man? – they had the people to fear, for everyone held that John was a real prophet. We have received this divine Sacrament, O Lord, as we celebrate the victory of your holy Martyrs; may what helped them to endure torment, we pray, make us, in the face of trials, steadfast in faith and in charity. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
After the expulsion of the merchants from the Temple, the religious authorities who thought they had power over all the places of prayer felt hurt and upset. They ask Jesus, “By what authority are you doing this?” Let us remember that at that time no one other than the religious authorities could show any power over the running of the Temple. In fact, by driving the merchants out of the Temple, Jesus expresses his sovereignty over the house of God. Today, does Jesus have any authority over us, over our lives? By subtle appeals, he invites us to change something in our lives, to let ourselves be questioned by the remarks of someone close to us, an isolated questioning. “Doesn’t the Scripture say, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations’?” (Mk 11:17). Is our heart today still the place of welcome for every person seeking God, reconciliation, or even a little discretion?

Seeing a fig tree in leaf some distance away, he went to see if he could find any fruit on it, but when he came up to it he found nothing but leaves; for it was not the season for figs. And he addressed the fig tree. “May no one ever eat fruit from you again”, he said. And his disciples heard him say this. ,So they reached Jerusalem and he went into the Temple and began driving out those who were selling and buying there; he upset the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those who were selling pigeons. Nor would he allow anyone to carry anything through the Temple. And he taught them and said, “Does not scripture say: My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples? But you have turned it into a robbers’ den.” This came to the ears of the chief priests and the scribes, and they tried to find some way of doing away with him; they were afraid of him because the people were carried away by his teaching. And when evening came, he went out of the city. Next morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree withered to the roots. Peter remembered. “Look, Rabbi,” he said to Jesus, “the fig tree you cursed has withered away.” Jesus answered, “Have faith in God. I tell you solemnly, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Get up and throw yourself into the sea,’ with no hesitation in his heart but believing that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. I tell you therefore: everything you ask and pray for, believe that you have it already, and it will be yours. And when you stand in prayer, forgive whatever you have against anybody, so that your Father in heaven may forgive your failings too. But if you do not forgive, your Father in heaven will not forgive your failings either.”

Meditation
Jesus arrives in Jerusalem amidst acclamations. Let us remember that this is the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem celebrated on Palm Sunday. The scene is beautiful. But the story is surprising and strange: in anger, Jesus curses a fig tree and expels the vendors from the Temple. Looking closely at this Gospel, it is not the fig tree that Jesus seemed to be targeting. His act of cursing the fig tree was meant to turn the focus to the Temple which no longer meets God’s expectations. This arouses his anger and the Temple is destroyed: “You see these great buildings! Not one stone will be left standing; it will all be destroyed” (Mk 13:2). How do we treat our bodies today, the Temple of the Holy Spirit? Has it become a place of lies, deceit, selfishness, greed, resentment and the like? May this word be useful to us today.

SAINT Justin, Martyr
Justin was converted from a pagan philosopher to Christianity. He then became the most illustrious opponent of pagan philosophers. He died in 165.

I will remind you of the works of the Lord, and tell of what I have seen. By the words of the Lord his works come into being and all creation obeys his will. The Lord has not granted to the holy ones to tell of all his marvels which the Almighty Lord has solidly constructed for the universe to stand firm in his glory. Meditation
Jesus’ passage sets the crowd abuzz. When the blind beggar asked, they said, “It’s Jesus of Nazareth who is passing by.” So with all his strength, even though he was lost in this large crowd, he shouted: “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me”. The people rebuked him and ordered him to be quiet. But Jesus finally heard his cry and asked them to call him. And he asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The experience of a changing humanity is Jesus’ provoking question. Yet in doing so, he helps us to ask the real questions: “What do I want?” Or “what is my true desire?” Can I fight with all my might today for what I want? It is in our desires that God comes to speak to us. For our deepest desires make us better aware of God’s desires for us, and how much God desires to be with us. Grant us grace in this humanity focused on You.

The Visitation of the Blessed
Virgin Mary
Feast
The more visible actors in the visitation drama (see Luke 1:39-45) are Mary and Elizabeth. However, Jesus and John the Baptist steal the scene in a hidden way. Jesus makes John leap with joy—the joy of messianic salvation. Elizabeth, in turn, is filled with the Holy Spirit and addresses words of praise to Mary—words that echo down through the ages.

Come and hear, all who fear God; I will tell what the Lord did for my soul.

Almighty ever-living God, who, while the Blessed Virgin Mary was carrying your Son in her womb, inspired her to visit Elizabeth, grant us, we pray, that, faithful to the promptings of the Spirit, we may magnify your greatness with the Virgin Mary at all times. Now as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She gave a loud cry and said, “Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord? For the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.” And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit exults in God my saviour; because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid.Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name, and his mercy reaches from age to age for those who fear him. He has shown the power of his arm, he has routed the proud of heart. He has pulled down princes from their thrones and exalted the lowly. The hungry he has filled with good things, the rich sent empty away. He has come to the help of Israel his servant, mindful of his mercy – according to the promise he made to our ancestors – of his mercy to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.” Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then went back home.

All generations will call me blessed, for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

May your Church proclaim your greatness, O God, for you have done great things for your faithful, and, as Saint John the Baptist leapt with joy when he first sensed the hidden presence of Christ, so may your Church rejoice to receive in this Sacrament the same ever-living Lord. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
Meditation
Mary was a woman of faith. Elizabeth praises her, not because she conceived Christ, but because she believed the angel’s words. Let us pray to her for the strong faith we need in these troubled times. God can do what we think is impossible. It is in this light that Mary even gives praise to God. No false humility here – just a recognition of the truth. God is the author of all good in my life. When two people meet who have said yes to God in their lives, like Mary and her cousin Elizabeth in today’s scripture; the new life of God growing in them jumps for joy as they acknowledge each other. It is God in one greeting God in the other. Do I bear God (or God’s message in me) to others in my daily life?vous commande : c’est de vous aimer les uns les autres. »

SAINT Luke Kirby
He was born in England and was ordained priest at Cambrai. In June 1580, he came to England He was immediately arrested and committed to the Gatehouse, Westminster. He died on May 1582.

Do not appear empty-handed in the Lord’s presence; for all these things are due under the commandment. A virtuous man’s offering graces the altar, and its savour rises before the Most High. A virtuous man’s sacrifice is acceptable, its memorial will not be forgotten. Honour the Lord with generosity, do not stint the first-fruits you bring. Add a smiling face to all your gifts, and be cheerful as you dedicate your tithes. Give to the Most High as he has given to you, generously as your means can afford; for the Lord is a good rewarder, he will reward you seven times over. Offer him no bribe, he will not accept it, do not put your faith in an unvirtuous sacrifice; since the Lord is a judge who is no respecter of personages.

Pay your sacrifice of thanksgiving to God and render him your votive offerings. A sacrifice of thanksgiving honours me and I will show God’s salvation to the upright.

Meditation
The disciples are still in shock at Jesus’ harsh words after a rich man refused the invitation to follow him; “A rich man will hardly enter the kingdom of heaven” (Mt 19:23). They are reeled, but he assures Peter of compensation in this world and the next for those who have broken away from anyone or anything to follow him. “Not without persecution” – these words reflect the harsh Christian reality in Mark’s time – and in our time too, of course. Am I tempted to accumulate profit upon profit, instead of being satisfied with what is necessary for my salvation and sharing what I have with the needy?

Mary, Mother of the Church
Blessed Joseph Gerard
Mary had been present at the very beginnings of the Church. She was there at the Annunciation when her humble consent in purity of heart allowed the Son of God to take flesh in her virginal womb. The title, Mother of the Church (Mater Ecclesiae) was first used by Berengaud, bishop of Treves (d. 1125) in his writings.

The disciples devoted themselves with one accord to prayer with Mary, the mother of Jesus.

O God, Father of mercies, whose Only Begotten Son, as he hung upon the Cross, chose the Blessed Virgin Mary, his Mother, to be our Mother also; grant, we pray, that with her loving help, your Church may be more fruitful day by day, and exulting in the holiness of her children, may draw to her embrace all the families of the peoples. Gospel: John 19: 25-34
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son.’ Then to the disciple he said, “This is your mother.” And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home. After this, Jesus knew that everything had now been completed, and to fulfil the scripture perfectly he said, “I am thirsty.” A jar full of vinegar stood there, so putting a sponge soaked in the vinegar on a hyssop stick they held it up to his mouth. After Jesus had taken the vinegar he said, “It is accomplished”; and bowing his head he gave up his spirit. It was Preparation Day, and to prevent the bodies remaining on the cross during the Sabbath – since that Sabbath was a day of special solemnity – the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken away. Consequently the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with him and then of the other. When they came to Jesus, they found he was already dead, and so instead of breaking his legs one of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance; and immediately there came out blood and water.

A wedding was held in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; then Jesus performed the first of his signs and manifested his glory and his disciples believed in him.
Prayer after Communion
Having received the pledge of redemption and of life we humbly pray, O Lord, that with the Blessed Virgin’s motherly help your Church may teach all nations by proclaiming the Gospel and, thanks to the outpouring of the Spirit, may fill the whole earth. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
The figure of Mary, our Mother, is at the centre of our scriptural meditation today. In the first reading, she is present among the apostles gathered for prayer. In the Gospel, she is at the foot of the cross and as such, Saint John presents her as a very important disciple of Jesus Christ. Jesus offers Mary to John as the latter’s mother, and John to Mary as her son. This teaches us that Mary is the mother of the Church, founded by Jesus himself upon the twelve apostles. Mary is given to us as the mother of the Church and as our mother. We can entrust our cries and worries to her.
