Saint John Chrysostom (349 – 407)
Psalter: Week III

He was born in Antioch. After a thorough education, he took up the ascetic life. He was ordained to the priesthood, and became a fruitful and effective preacher. The term Chrysostom meaning «golden-mouthed» was given because of his great eloquence.
Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Dn 12: 3
Those who are wise will shine brightly like the splendour of the firmament and those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars for ever.

O God, strength of those who hope in you, who willed that the Bishop Saint John Chrysostom should be illustrious by his wonderful eloquence and his experience of suffering, grant us, we pray, that, instructed by his teachings, we may be strengthened through the example of his invincible patience. Here is a saying that you can rely on and nobody should doubt: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. I myself am the greatest of them; and if mercy has been shown to me, it is because Jesus Christ meant to make me the greatest evidence of his inexhaustible patience for all the other people who would later have to trust in him to come to eternal life. “…the man who built his house on soil”! Now, I pause to reflect: In all the fervour about my Faith, whose name and image am I truly defending — Jesus’ or my own? When faced with disagreement concerning my preaching, do I become gloomy and lament the lack appreciation for my sacrifices in spreading the Good News? Similarly, If I do not receive gratitude after performing a generous act, do I consider giving up on doing good for others? Lord Jesus, remind me that it is only your name that I should be defending in all my thoughts, actions, and words. Amen.

How can you say to your brother, “Brother, let me take out the splinter that is in your eye,” when you cannot see the plank in your own? Hypocrite! Jesus advises that I remove the plank from my ‘own eye first,’ and I rejoice to realise that I can begin this process by adopting Pope Francis’ ‘Five Finger Prayer arrangement’: starting with the thumb (praying for those closest to me, family and friends), index finger (for those who teach, instruct, and heal me, such as my teachers, doctors, and priests); middle finger (for authority figures and those in government); ring finger (for the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, and the poor), and finally the pinkie (praying for myself).

In 1615, he became a member of the Order of Saint Benedict and was ordained as a priest in 1617. He was arrested several times during his travels before he eventually suffered a martyr’s death in 1671.

Since you have been brought back to true life with Christ, you must look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand. Let your thoughts be on heavenly things, not on the things that are on the earth, because you have died, and now the life you have is hidden with Christ in God. But when Christ is revealed – and he is your life – you too will be revealed in all your glory with him. That is why you must kill everything in you that belongs only to earthly life: fornication, impurity, guilty passion, evil desires and especially greed, which is the same thing as worshipping a false god; all this is the sort of behaviour that makes God angry. And it is the way in which you used to live when you were surrounded by people doing the same thing, but now you, of all people, must give all these things up: getting angry, being bad-tempered, spitefulness, abusive language and dirty talk; and never tell each other lies. Meditation
“When day came, He summoned His disciples and picked out twelve of them.” This act of Jesus’ calls to mind the promises I made to Jesus during my Baptism. I am reminded of the weight and significance of a promise, knowing that Jesus always keeps His promises! I am challenged to revisit the promises I have made and continue making to fellow children of God. Am I aware that these commitments are made to Jesus Himself? How many of them have I kept, and how many do I intend to honour? Lord Jesus, guide me to always seek Your counsel before making any promise to others.

On this special occasion of your birthday, Mother Mary, I earnestly implore you to grant me the strength to resist the temptation to neglect you. Whenever such temptation comes, give me the strength to cry out, like blind Bartimaeus: “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

I am sending him back to you, and with him – I could say – a part of my own self. I should have liked to keep him with me; he could have been a substitute for you, to help me while I am in the chains that the Good News has brought me. However, I did not want to do anything without your consent; it would have been forcing your act of kindness, which should be spontaneous. I know you have been deprived of Onesimus for a time, but it was only so that you could have him back for ever, not as a slave any more, but something much better than a slave, a dear brother; especially dear to me, but how much more to you, as a blood-brother as well as a brother in the Lord. Otherwise, if he laid the foundation and then found himself unable to finish the work, the onlookers would all start making fun of him and saying, “Here is a man who started to build and was unable to finish.” Or again, what king marching to war against another king would not first sit down and consider whether with ten thousand men he could stand up to the other who advanced against him with twenty thousand? If not, then while the other king was still a long way off, he would send envoys to sue for peace. So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions.’

Meditation
“Still a prisoner of Christ Jesus,” declares Paul. This proclamation for Jesus brings to mind the other word from Scripture which says that “anyone who commits sin is a slave to Satan”. In my daily struggle, two glaring choices confront me: If I choose to do good, Jesus catches me in His net; if I choose to succumb to evil by committing sin, Satan imprisons me as his slave in his dungeon. I see the need to put in extra effort to always make the choice for Jesus. I acknowledge my responsibility for the decisions I make. Lord, help me to resist the allure of my enemy’s sweet, attractive, and dirty path, enticing me to keep blaming others for what is happening to me.
