St. Josaphat
(c.1580 – 1623)
Red
He was born in Ukraine of Orthodox parents. Josaphat joined the first monastery of the order of St Basil to be united to the Catholic Church: he was the first person to do so. He was ordained priest and, eventually and reluctantly, appointed bishop of Polotsk in 1617. Josaphat was murdered by a mob in 1623 while on a pastoral visit to Vitebsk.
Entrance Antiphon :
Because of the Lord’s covenant and the ancestral laws, the Saints of God persevered in loving brotherhood, for there was always one spirit in them, and one faith.
Collect
Stir up in your Church, we pray, O Lord, the Spirit that filled Saint Josaphat as he laid down his life for the sheep, so that through his intercession, we too may be strengthened by the same Spirit and not be afraid to lay down our life for others. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Wisdom 13:1-9
Naturally stupid are all men who have not known God and who, from the good things that are seen, have not been able to discover Him-who-is, or, by studying the works, have failed to recognise the Artificer. Fire however, or wind, or the swift air, the sphere of the stars, impetuous water, heaven’s lamps, are what they have held to be the gods who govern the world. If, charmed by their beauty, they have taken things for gods, let them know how much the Lord of these excels them, since the very Author of beauty has created them. And if they have been impressed by their power and energy, let them deduce from these how much mightier is he that has formed them, since through the grandeur and beauty of the creatures we may, by analogy, contemplate their Author. Small blame, however, attaches to these men, for perhaps they only go astray in their search for God and their eagerness to find him; living among his works, they strive to comprehend them and fall victim to appearances, seeing so much beauty. Even so, they are not to be excused: if they are capable of acquiring enough knowledge to be able to investigate the world, how have they been so slow to find its Master?

People were eating and drinking, marrying wives and husbands, right up to the day Noah went into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. It will be the same as it was in Lot’s day: people were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, but the day Lot left Sodom, God rained fire and brimstone from heaven and it destroyed them all. It will be the same when the day comes for the Son of Man to be revealed. When that day comes, anyone on the housetop, with his possessions in the house, must not come down to collect them, nor must anyone in the fields turn back either. Remember Lot’s wife. Most merciful God, pour out your blessing upon these offerings and confirm us in the faith that Saint Josaphat professed by the shedding of his blood. Through Christ our Lord.

May this heavenly table, O Lord, bestow on us a spirit of fortitude and peace, so that, following Saint Josaphat’s example, we may willingly spend our lives working for the honour and unity of the Church. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
We are gradually moving towards the end of the liturgical year, and the sacred texts that the Church proposes to us speak of end times when Christ will return to judge the earth. Jesus shows us that disorderly attachment to the things of this world and seeking to preserve earthly life will do us no good. Only one thing is necessary: to surrender to the will of God and to keep our eyes fixed on the Kingdom of our Lord. Let us not be like the contemporaries of Noah and Lot. They received the warning, but they refused to listen and believe. Let us trust in God and ask him for the grace to be attentive to his word and to put it into practice.

Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was born in the village of Sotto il Monte, near Bergamo, in 1881. At the age of 11 he entered the seminary at Bergamo and later pursued his studies at the Pontifical Seminary in Rome. He was ordained priest in 1904. He was secretary to the Bishop of Bergamo but from 1921 onwards he served the Holy See directly in various posts, both in Rome and in Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece, culminating as Apostolic Nuncio to France from 1944 until 1953, when he was created cardinal and made the Patriarch of Venice. He was elected Pope in 1958.

Through him we received grace and our apostolic mission to preach the obedience of faith to all pagan nations in honour of his name. You are one of these nations, and by his call belong to Jesus Christ. Meditation
We live in a world in which signs, wonders and miracles are put before faith. Many Christians are not different from the large crowd following Jesus in the gospel. St. Paul underlines in the first reading that Christianity is not a matter of miracles; rather it is a call to faith in Christ Jesus. The people of Nineveh show a contrast compared to those of the gospel. These needed no sign; all they heard was the word of the Lord, “Repent”. This was enough to set back them back on track.

Meditation
Detachment from things makes us follow Christ fully and enables our hearts to be moved by compassion and charity. This is evidently a declaration of our faith, a testimony of a ‘living faith’. Detachment makes both the poor and the wealthy a source of blessing to those in need. May God grant us the grace to be charitable with what we have received freely from him so that they constitute for us not an obstacle to his Kingdom but a bridge drawing us closer to him, and our neighbours.

Cardinal John Henry Newman was born in London in 1801, he was for over twenty years an Anglican clergyman. His studies of the early Church led him progressively towards Catholicism, and in 1845 he embraced “the one true fold of the Redeemer”. He was a prolific and influential writer on a variety of subjects. In 1879 he was created Cardinal by Pope Leo XIII. He died in Birmingham on 11th August 1890.

Meditation
Belonging to the family of Jesus entails listening, keeping the word of God and putting it into practice. We must be faithfully following Christ, doing our work faithfully day by day, hour by hour and minute by minute as it comes. On this day, we are invited to make the word of God part of us for it is our only source of happiness, the lamp unto our feet and the light on our path like the psalmist says.

Pelagia, more often called Margaret, was an actress of Antioch who was converted by a sermon of Bishop Nonnus of Edessa. She gave her wealth to Nonnus to aid the poor. She subsequently became a hermitess in a cave on Mount of Olivette.

Meditation
The rejection of truth is a kind of mortal sin because it is a personal rejection of the salvation offered to you, and at the same time, a conscious, direct and foolish attack against God. It is also a wicked act that deliberately seeks to mislead people. More often, such sin arises from the depths of pride and fear; fear of being reduced in importance by the one who sheds light on something new.

The feast of the Holy Rosary was instituted by Pope Pius V to celebrate the anniversary of the defeat of the Turkish fleet at the battle of Lepanto which ended the threat of Muslim domination of the Mediterranean and was ascribed in part to the prayers and processions of the Rosary confraternity in Rome.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb.

Meditation
The Lord’s Prayer also tells us of the love of the Father and how much he gives to us. However, the reading points to something which is important for us: to ask. It is not that the Lord does not know what we need even before we ask him, but that in seeking the Lord, the heart of him who seeks gets transformed, and learns of the Father’s love which invariably extends to others.
