St Thomas Aquinas, Priest, Doctor (1225 – 1274)
He was born of a noble family in southern Italy, and was educated by the Benedictines. He studied in Paris and in Cologne under the great philosopher St Albert the Great. He is the church’s one and only Angelic Doctor.

Meditation
While people apparently recognise only blood-relationships, Jesus goes beyond! He speaks of his true family or family members. To Jesus, family membership includes all who do “the will of God”. The Gospel of Luke puts more emphasis on this: “Those who hear the Word of God and do it” (Luke 8:21). It is the new family, the family of the eschatological times that Jesus came to establish here on earth. In affirming this, we are not to understand that Jesus negates blood-relationships; rather, he merely lays stress on the fact that, now, it is faith-relationship that counts. Our Faith renders us all “brothers and sisters”. It is proper that we live as such. Jesus says that his followers are closer to him than even his blood relatives.

She was born in Desenziano, in Lombardy, in about 1470. In 1535 she founded the Ursulines, an order of nuns devoted to giving a Christian education to girls from poor families. She died in 1540.

Meditation
In the Gospel, Jesus summons the scribes, who say that Jesus must be possessed by the devil because he can drive out demons. The scribes are erring in several ways in their analysis of the situation. They insinuate that Jesus can cast out demons because he is one, when of course demons would not want to destroy their own. He would have to be the opposite of demons to destroy them, and that would make him good instead of evil. So by saying he is possessed of demons they are in fact blaspheming against the Holy Spirit (and Jesus says that is an unforgivable sin). Jesus is not possessed of the devil, he is filled with the Holy Spirit. He does not get his demon-destroying powers from the devil himself, but instead from the Holy Spirit. The scribes are therefore calling the Holy Spirit the Devil. Blasphemy for sure. He uses a parable, telling the scribes that a house divided against itself cannot stand. I see the house as myself. The divisions come when I fail to do what I should do or when I don’t let God in or when I turn away from God. I am like a house divided, weak at the foundation, rickety in the structure. The strength and support God provides when I open myself to Him can build up my foundation and make me ready to face the storms of life.

Meditation
When the Lord started His ministry, He called a core group: Peter and Andrew, James and John and others to become henceforth, ‘fishers of men.’ Why did Jesus call these fishermen? First, a fisherman has patience. He learns to wait patiently until the fish will take the bait. Second, a fisherman has perseverance. A fisherman learns not to be discouraged but always to try again. Third, a fisherman has courage. A fisherman is ready to risk and to face the fury of the sea and of the gale. Fourth, a fisherman has an eye for the right moment. The wise fisherman knows well that there are times when it is hopeless to fish. He knows when to cast and when not to cast. Fifth, a fisherman knows how to fit the bait to the fish. One fish will rise to one bait and another to another. Sixth, the wise fisherman must keep himself out of sight. If he reveals his own presence or even his own shadow, the fish will very certainly not bite.

The Conversion of St. Paul, Apostle
Feast
Saul, the young man who looked after the cloaks of the men who were stoning St Stephen, grew into a dedicated and efficient persecutor of Christians. Today’s feast celebrates the day that Christ appeared to him in a vision as he was on the way to Damascus, reproached him for his persecutions and converted him to the true faith.

Meditation
In the conversion of St. Paul, Jesus chose an enemy to be his friend. That is what he has done to us. We who are sinners, who by our words and actions, chose to be enemies of Jesus, are the people God calls. When we accept the invitation of Christ, we leave the path of enmity. We walk a different path – the path of the disciple. The path of the disciple is the path of Christ, the path we must seek, walking behind Jesus, following his footsteps, imitating the Master.

Meditation
I have known people who dropped out of the Church because a priest or a pastor treated them badly. It is true that a priest can hurt somebody. But is that a good reason for discontinuing the practice of the faith? Saul might have been a bad person, but he was all the same God’s chosen king. That was the reason why David forgave him and did not kill him when he could have. A priest may be a bad person, but he is still God’s anointed one and the spiritual leader of his flock. As Christians, we are messengers of God’s forgiving love. One way of fulfilling our call is to forgive our priests for their shortcomings.

Gospel: Mark 3:7-12
Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lakeside, and great crowds from Galilee followed him. From Judaea, Jerusalem, Idumaea, Transjordania and the region of Tyre and Sidon, great numbers who had heard of all he was doing came to him. And he asked his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, to keep him from being crushed. For he had cured so many that all who were afflicted in any way were crowding forward to touch him. And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw him, would fall down before him and shout, ‘You are the Son of God!’ But he warned them strongly not to make him known.

Grant us, O Lord, we pray, that we may participate worthily in these mysteries, for whenever the memorial of this sacrifice is celebrated, the work of our redemption is accomplished. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
There are many roads to hate, but envy is the shortest of them all. One of the saddest things about envy is its smallness; to be envious is to turn eternally like a caged rat within the tight radius of malice. The gospel tells us about the popularity of Jesus as a healer. Great crowds gathered around him acclaiming him as the Son of God. But the Pharisees and the Scribes were not among the crowd. They were so envious of the popularity of Jesus that it grew into fierce hatred against him. We need to remember that the envious person poisons his or her food and then eats it. Saul became envious of David because of his success in the war against the Philistines. Envy can plague not only kings like Saul, but ordinary people like us.
