He was born in Huesca and became a deacon of the church of Saragossa (Zaragoza). He was tortured to death in Valencia, in the persecution of Diocletian. After his death, his cult spread rapidly through the Roman Empire

Thus David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone and struck the Philistine down and killed him. David had no sword in his hand. Then David ran and, standing over the Philistine, seized his sword and drew it from the scabbard, and with this he killed him, cutting off his head. The Philistines saw that their champion was dead, and took to flight.

He said to the man with the withered hand, ‘Stand up out in the middle!’ Then he said to them, ‘Is it against the law on the sabbath day to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to kill?’ But they said nothing. Then, grieved to find them so obstinate, he looked angrily round at them, and said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He stretched it out and his hand was better. Meditation
Mahatma Gandhi once said: ‘Fearlessness is the first requisite of spirituality. Cowards can never be moral.’ David was a beacon of moral courage in the face of Goliath. He defeated the armoured giant with only a sling shot. Jesus, in the gospel, demonstrates what moral courage means. He was aware of the wrath that his saving action for the man with the withered hand would invite from the disapproving Pharisees and the Scribes. But casting aside all the fears, he healed the man. Both for David and for Jesus, the source of their courage was their conviction that God was on their side, with his power and his grace.

St. Agnes (- 304)
As with so many of the early Roman martyrs, very little is now known about Agnes’ life. Agnes was filled with the love of God from an early age, vowed herself to celibacy, and when the opportunity of martyrdom arose, she did not hide away but stepped forward and took it.

O God, who bestowed on St. Agnes a crown among the Saints for her twofold triumph of virginity and martyrdom, grant, we pray, through the power of this Sacrament, that, bravely overcoming every evil, we may attain the glory of heaven. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
God’s ways are not our ways and his values are not our values. God sends Samuel to choose a king to succeed Saul. He sent him to choose the least likely son of Jesse, one whom Jesse himself did not even consider as a possibility. That son was David, who became the greatest king in the history of the Israelites. We have been chosen by God to be a kingly and priestly people. It was God who made David king and it is God who made us his people, both out of his own goodness. We have a duty to give thanks and praise to God for his unmerited goodness to us.

Pope St. Fabian (- 250)
Bl. Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi, Priest (1903 – 1964)
Fabian became Pope in 236 and was martyred on 20 January 250, during the persecution of the Emperor Decius.
Fr Tansi from Nigeria lived the monastic life with great faith and humility. Absorbed in prayer, he was a living example of patience and charity.

No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak; if he does, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and the tear gets worse. Meditation
King Saul had been commanded by God to wage a holy war against the Amalekites. Nothing of their possessions was to be spared. But Saul made a mistake, with good intentions, of course, but in disobedience. He did not destroy the best of the sheep and oxen in order to sacrifice them to God. But Samuel reprimanded him, saying: ‘obedience is better than sacrifice’. In the gospel Jesus spoke out against a form of fasting which had become nothing more than an external act lacking any real devotion to God. He insisted that this old form of religion had to go, to be replaced with a worship of God which came from the heart.

Meditation
Pope Saint Paul VI is known for this powerful sentence: “Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses”. (Evangelii Nuntiandae 41). Witness comes from the Greek word for martyr, (martus). Being a true disciple of Christ entails being a good witness. A witness sees, knows, stands up and speaks for others. A witness will defend a person wrongly accused. He speaks from his own experience of the person. We too should be ready to speak for Christ. In fact, a Christian is someone like John the Baptist: he helps others to see who Jesus is. How can we do this? By the kind of life we live. Our life can become a light for others. They can see Christ in us. Our life will remind them of Christ.

He was bishop of Tours in France. A senator at Tours, he was initially married, supposedly to a most unpleasant wife. Named bishop of the city in 488, he was forced to leave the see in 496 by the Arian Visigoths, and went to Spain. He died perhaps in Toulouse, or in Spain, possibly as a martyr.

Meditation
The choice of Saul as leader of Israel was not by accident. It was God’s response to the plea of the people of Israel. It was God who chose Saul as King. Saul is described as being outwardly more handsome and taller than any other Israelite. But behind his outward beauty lay character. God gave Saul ‘power’ to govern his people. How was Saul going to use this power? Time would tell. It is only God who knows why he chose Saul. His ways are not our ways and his thoughts are not our thoughts. That is why when we pray that God may give us a leader in any sphere of life, we must trust that it is ultimately God who is in control. For his own divine purposes, he chooses certain persons to occupy certain positions in life.

St Anthony, Abbot (251 – 356)
St Anthony is the originator of the monastic life. He was born in Egypt: when his parents died, he listened to the words of the Gospel and gave all his belongings to the poor. He lived to be over a hundred years old, and died in 356.

Gospel: Mark 2:1-12
When Jesus returned to Capernaum, word went round that he was back; and so many people collected that there was no room left, even in front of the door. He was preaching the word to them when some people came bringing him a paralytic carried by four men, but as the crowd made it impossible to get the man to him, they stripped the roof over the place where Jesus was; and when they had made an opening, they lowered the stretcher on which the paralytic lay. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, ‘My child, your sins are forgiven.’ Now some scribes were sitting there, and they thought to themselves, ‘How can this man talk like that? He is blaspheming. Who can forgive sins but God?’ Jesus, inwardly aware that this was what they were thinking, said to them, ‘Why do you have these thoughts in your hearts? Which of these is easier: to say to the paralytic, “Your sins are forgiven” or to say, “Get up, pick up your stretcher and walk”? But to prove to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,’ – he turned to the paralytic – ‘I order you: get up, pick up your stretcher, and go off home.’ And the man got up, picked up his stretcher at once and walked out in front of everyone, so that they were all astounded and praised God saying, ‘We have never seen anything like this.’

May these offerings of our service, placed on your altar in commemoration of St. Anthony, be acceptable to you, O Lord, we pray, and grant that, released from earthly attachments, we may have our riches in you alone. Through Christ our Lord.

Nourished for our healing by your Sacraments, O Lord, may we escape every snare of the enemy unharmed, just as by your grace St. Anthony won glorious victories over the powers of darkness. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
See what forgiveness of sins does in the gospel text of today. It made a paralysed man to walk. Forgiveness of sins can change so many things in our life. The starting point of any renewal in our life is the experience of the forgiveness of God. Forgiveness heals. Sin is a form of paralysis. Jesus uses his authority to free us from sin, to cure the paralysis with which we are afflicted, the paralysis of sin. Cured of the paralysis of sin, we are able to walk on the path of holiness.
