St Bernadette Soubirous
(1844 – 1879)
She was born in 1844 to a destitute family in Lourdes, in France. On 11 February 1858 she received the first of a series of visions of the Mother of God which led to Lourdes becoming a place of pilgrimage and healing. In 1866 she became a nun at Nevers, where she died on 16 April 1879.

The disciple Jesus loved was reclining next to Jesus; Simon Peter signed to him and said, ‘Ask who it is he means’, so leaning back on Jesus’ breast he said, ‘Who is it, Lord?’ ‘It is the one’ replied Jesus ‘to whom I give the piece of bread that I shall dip in the dish.’ He dipped the piece of bread and gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot. Meditation
The ultimate moment for Jesus to assume the project of His Father has arrived. The disciples and the apostles participate in this project not just as informed observers but as direct actors. Peter and Judas respectively respond to this call by recognition and refusal respectively. Judas does not admit his limitations; rather, he pursues his plan of betraying Jesus. Peter, on the contrary, shows faith and humility. When his weakness led him to deny his master, he cried bitterly. This show of humility and repentance earned him the honour of being the shepherd of Jesus’ flock. Let him, and not Judas, be our model. Like him, we should acknowledge our weaknesses and ask God to transform us and make us his instruments in this world.

Gospel: John 12:1-11
Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom he had raised from the dead. They gave a dinner for him there; Martha waited on them and Lazarus was among those at table. Mary brought in a pound of very costly ointment, pure nard, and with it anointed the feet of Jesus, wiping them with her hair; the house was full of the scent of the ointment. Then Judas Iscariot – one of his disciples, the man who was to betray him – said, ‘Why wasn’t this ointment sold for three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor?’ He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he was in charge of the common fund and used to help himself to the contributions. So Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone; she had to keep this scent for the day of my burial. You have the poor with you always, you will not always have me.’ Meanwhile a large number of Jews heard that he was there and came not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead. Then the chief priests decided to kill Lazarus as well, since it was on his account that many of the Jews were leaving them and believing in Jesus.

Meditation
The paradox of the life of man is found in this Gospel, whose teaching is rich. Lazarus is brought back to life and this news attracts the crowd. This effervescence brings the Jews to want to kill him. In fact, Jesus is the indirect target. Mary, washing his feet with expensive perfume, anticipates his funeral. Instead of welcoming such an initiative with a good heart, Judas thinks only of his personal interest. In this confusion, Jesus remains conscious of the Kingdom he is establishing and about his eventual suffering. In his name is the source of justice, protection, strength and peace. All the people will gather to sing the glory of God.

There was a Jewish festival, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now at the Sheep Pool in Jerusalem there is a building, called Bethzatha in Hebrew, consisting of five porticos; and under these were crowds of sick people – blind, lame, paralysed – waiting for the water to move. One man there had an illness which had lasted thirty-eight years, and when Jesus saw him lying there and knew he had been in this condition for a long time, he said, ‘Do you want to be well again?’ ‘Sir,’ replied the sick man ‘I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is disturbed; and while I am still on the way, someone else gets there before me.’ Jesus said, ‘Get up, pick up your sleeping-mat and walk.’ The man was cured at once, and he picked up his mat and walked away. Now that day happened to be the sabbath, so the Jews said to the man who had been cured, ‘It is the sabbath; you are not allowed to carry your sleeping-mat.’ He replied, ‘But the man who cured me told me, “Pick up your mat and walk.”’ They asked, ‘Who is the man who said to you, “Pick up your mat and walk”?’ The man had no idea who it was, since Jesus had disappeared into the crowd that filled the place. After a while Jesus met him in the Temple and said, ‘Now you are well again, be sure not to sin any more, or something worse may happen to you.’ The man went back and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had cured him. It was because he did things like this on the sabbath that the Jews began to persecute Jesus.

Meditation
The prophecy of Ezekiel consists of a vision which announces that the body of Christ is the temple. From it, the living water of baptism springs and floods all the peoples of the earth with its sap of new life. Whether they come from the West, from the South, from the North, or from the East, all will be partakers of the Lord’s banquet. The cross whose fruit will nourish the righteous is a remedy for the sick. In the same way, the word of Jesus is an effective treatment that gives healing to the patient of Bethesda. Jesus is at the door of our heart; let us open up with confidence and tenderness to his mercy.

St Zeno of Verona (d. 371)
Zeno, a native of North Africa, was appointed bishop of Verona (Northern Italy) in 362. He preached much against Arianism and fostered the growth of missionary activity in his area. He died in 371.

The Jews fetched stones to stone him, so Jesus said to them, ‘I have done many good works for you to see, works from my Father; for which of these are you stoning me?’ The Jews answered him, ‘We are not stoning you for doing a good work but for blasphemy: you are only a man and you claim to be God.’ Jesus answered: ‘Is it not written in your Law: I said, you are gods? So the Law uses the word gods of those to whom the word of God was addressed, and scripture cannot be rejected. Yet you say to someone the Father has consecrated and sent into the world, “You are blaspheming,” because he says, “I am the son of God.” If I am not doing my Father’s work, there is no need to believe me; but if I am doing it, then even if you refuse to believe in me, at least believe in the work I do; then you will know for sure that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.’ They wanted to arrest him then, but he eluded them. He went back again to the far side of the Jordan to stay in the district where John had once been baptising. Meditation
The works of Jesus speak of Him and the faith to which He invites men. Those who believe become sons of God, sons of the Light. Jesus opposes his accusers who refuse his person and his works. They see in Him a blasphemer who must be committed to death. However, Jesus reveals the plan of the Father through the works he performs. Any God-fearing person stands out by the quality of the works he does. Such person is generally not welcome in circles where evil has replaced the truth. Let us implore the courage of Jeremiah, who stood firm before systems of manipulation, lies and selfish interests. Lord, protect us from being dragged today into the games of manipulation wrought by evil.

St Stanisław (1036 – 1079)
He was born in Poland in 1036. He became bishop of Krakow 1072. He ruled the church as a good shepherd and gave help to the poor. He was murdered as he was celebrating Mass on 8 May 1079.

Abram bowed to the ground and God said this to him, ‘Here now is my covenant with you: you shall become the father of a multitude of nations. R/ The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.
1) Consider the Lord and his strength; constantly seek his face. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, the judgements he spoke.
2) children of Abraham, his servant, O sons of the Jacob he chose. He, the Lord, is our God: his judgements prevail in all the earth.
3) He remembers his covenant for ever, his promise for a thousand generations, the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac.

Gospel: John 8:51-59
Jesus said to the Jews: ‘I tell you most solemnly, whoever keeps my word will never see death.’ The Jews said, ‘Now we know for certain that you are possessed. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead, and yet you say, “Whoever keeps my word will never know the taste of death.” Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? The prophets are dead too. Who are you claiming to be?’ Jesus answered: ‘If I were to seek my own glory that would be no glory at all; my glory is conferred by the Father, by the one of whom you say, “He is our God” although you do not know him. But I know him, and if I were to say: I do not know him, I should be a liar, as you are liars yourselves. But I do know him, and I faithfully keep his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced to think that he would see my Day; he saw it and was glad.’ The Jews then said, ‘You are not fifty yet, and you have seen Abraham!’ Jesus replied: ‘I tell you most solemnly, before Abraham ever was, I Am.’ At this they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself and left the Temple.
Prayer over the Offerings
Look with favour, Lord, we pray, on these sacrificial offerings, that they may profit our conversion and the salvation of all the world. Through Christ our Lord.

God did not spare his own Son, but handed him over for us all; with him, he has given us all things.

Nourished by your saving gifts, we beseech your mercy, Lord, that by this same Sacrament,

Be gracious to your people, Lord, we pray, that, as from day to day they reject what does not please you, they may be filled instead with delight at your commands. Through Christ our Lord.

Meditation
Jesus worries his interlocutors by admitting to them that Abraham rejoiced at his coming into the world. How can he justify it? “Before Abraham ever was, I AM”. This confusing answer is incomprehensible to the Jews who listen to Jesus. It must be remembered from this episode that Jesus remains a mystery that is revealed by the Word. This Word is the essence that nourishes our faith. We are sons of Abraham, by the filiation of the “Arch-son” who is the “Eternal Word”. By nourishing ourselves with this word, we enter into the will of the Father who invites us to abide in Him.
