King Nebuchadnezzar said, ‘Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, is it true that you do not serve my gods, and that you refuse to worship the golden statue I have erected? When you hear the sound of horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, or any other instrument, are you prepared to prostrate yourselves and worship the statue I have made? If you refuse to worship it, you must be thrown straight away into the burning fiery furnace; and where is the god who could save you from my power?’ Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to King Nebuchadnezzar, ‘Your question hardly requires an answer: if our God, the one we serve, is able to save us from the burning fiery furnace and from your power, O king, he will save us; and even if he does not, then you must know, O king, that we will not serve your god or worship the statue you have erected.’ These words infuriated King Nebuchadnezzar; his expression was very different now as he looked at Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. He gave orders for the furnace to be made seven times hotter than usual, and commanded certain stalwarts from his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the burning fiery furnace. Then King Nebuchadnezzar sprang to his feet in amazement. He said to his advisers, ‘Did we not have these three men thrown bound into the fire?’ They replied, ‘Certainly, O king.’ ‘But,’ he went on ‘I can see four men walking about freely in the heart of the fire without coming to any harm. And the fourth looks like a son of the gods.’ Nebuchadnezzar exclaimed, ‘Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego: he has sent his angel to rescue the servants who, putting their trust in him, defied the order of the king, and preferred to forfeit their bodies rather than serve or worship any god but their own.’

Meditation
Jesus’ dialogue with the Jewish crowd revolves around the unique sonship of Abraham’s sons. Jesus tells them that their identity as descendants of Abraham only has meaning if they acknowledge the truth about God’s message, and this truth lies in Jesus. Each one of us is called to know the truth about the Son of Man. Knowing the truth about Jesus brings liberation from ignorance and sin, because lies imprison man and make him a disciple of Evil. Let us take the side of truth and trust like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who refuse to disobey the Lord’s prescriptions. Remaining faithful to the truth leads us to a life that does not end.

Meditation
The density and depth of the message of the one who is called I AM is a true call to know the Father. The Son does the Father’s will and gives him glory in the presence of the Holy Spirit. This text of John leads us to the realities of heaven in that Jesus tells us that sin belongs to the world below. It is necessary to detach oneself from the life of sin and rise to the spiritual world of Good. Dwelling in the Father’s house is our ultimate objective and the illustration of the bronze serpent that Moses raises is an invitation for us to raise our heads to heaven and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus in order to enter into this communion with the Father.

Meditation
The Lord himself defends the cause of the righteous. Our God is the source of truth, and Daniel relies on this truth to do justice to poor Susanna. It is the same for the adulterous woman whom the Pharisees brought to Jesus in the hope of trapping him. The truth of Jesus’ words save her from their cruelty. Very often, we condemn others while remaining blind on our own sin. We forget that the other is like me and helps me to see my weaknesses, my vulnerability. Jesus alone can give us the light, which will dispel our darkness and blindness and help us follow him. If we seek the truth that comes from his Word and the love his Spirit gives, then we will not be walking in the dark; we will have the light of life.

Second reading: Philippians 3:8-14
I believe nothing can happen that will outweigh the supreme advantage of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For him I have accepted the loss of everything, and I look on everything as so much rubbish if only I can have Christ and be given a place in him. I am no longer trying for perfection by my own efforts, the perfection that comes from the Law, but I want only the perfection that comes through faith in Christ, and is from God and based on faith. All I want is to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and to share his sufferings by reproducing the pattern of his death. That is the way I can hope to take my place in the resurrection of the dead. Not that I have become perfect yet: I have not yet won, but I am still running, trying to capture the prize for which Christ Jesus captured me. I can assure you my brothers, I am far from thinking that I have already won. All I can say is that I forget the past and I strain ahead for what is still to come; I am racing for the finish, for the prize to which God calls us upwards to receive in Christ Jesus.

Gospel: John 8:1-11
Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as all the people came to him, he sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; and making her stand there in full view of everybody, they said to Jesus, ‘Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery, and Moses has ordered us in the Law to condemn women like this to death by stoning. What have you to say?’ They asked him this as a test, looking for something to use against him. But Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. As they persisted with their question, he looked up and said, ‘If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.’ Then he bent down and wrote on the ground again. When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained standing there. He looked up and said, ‘Woman, where are they? Meditation
The logic of Jesus is different from that of the Pharisees, who constantly brandish the Law as a source of sanctions. After instructing the crowd, Jesus finds himself faced with a case of accusation of a woman caught in adultery, that is, a case of sin according to the Law. Here he invites us to focus not on the sins of the “other”, but on our own sins. He makes us see our own faces when we are mean. We are not good-looking when we condemn others. All of us are children of God and our inheritance is Love. The death and resurrection of Jesus is the peak of the perfection of this Love. St Paul, who has experienced this, retains in him that spiritual richness to the detriment of the material one. The power of God is the support of the righteous.

Saint William of Eskilsoe
(1125 – 1203)
He was born in 1125 and was a French religious who willingly led a life with few comforts. He spent many hours in prayer and became a scholar of religious law. An account written after his death described him as “famous for his life and miracles.” He died in 1203.

Gospel: John 7:40-52
Several people who had been listening to Jesus said, ‘Surely he must be the prophet’, and some said, ‘He is the Christ’, but others said, ‘Would the Christ be from Galilee? Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from the town of Bethlehem?’ So the people could not agree about him. Some would have liked to arrest him, but no one actually laid hands on him. The police went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, ‘Why haven’t you brought him?’ The police replied, ‘There has never been anybody who has spoken like him.’ ‘So’ the Pharisees answered ‘you have been led astray as well? Have any of the authorities believed in him? Any of the Pharisees? This rabble knows nothing about the Law – they are damned.’ One of them, Nicodemus – the same man who had come to Jesus earlier – said to them, ‘But surely the Law does not allow us to pass judgement on a man without giving him a hearing and discovering what he is about?’ To this they answered, ‘Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets do not come out of Galilee.’

Meditation
There is fierce confrontation between Jesus and the high priests and the Pharisees, who are full of hate. They want Jesus to die, although his popularity increases. Despite this, we notice the division among the leaders about the true identity of Jesus. Just like yesterday, there is still the fear of whether some of the leaders have accepted his teaching. The people are divided, as some say he is the Messiah while others say he is a bigot. The interpretations of the prophecies about him are as varied as the views about his personality. The elders are confused about whom he is and what to do with him. That confusion has not cleared until date. Many of us are still confused about what to do with Jesus in our lives. He says he stands at the door of our hearts knocking. Will you open today, or will you remain in this confusion and reject the Son of God?

St Vincent Ferrer (1350 – 1419)
He was born in Valencia and joined the Dominicans at the age of 17.Among others, he preached to the Jews, of whom some 25,000 were converted to Christianity. He died in 5 April 1419.

Entrance Antiphon: Cf. Ps 53: 3-4
O God, save me by your name; by your power, defend my cause. O God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth.
Collect
O God, who have prepared fitting helps for us in our weakness, grant, we pray, that we may receive their healing effects with joy and reflect them in a holy way of life. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading: Wisdom 2:1,12-22
The godless say to themselves, with their misguided reasoning: ‘Our life is short and dreary, nor is there any relief when man’s end comes, nor is anyone known who can give release from Hades. Let us lie in wait for the virtuous man, since he annoys us and opposes our way of life, reproaches us for our breaches of the law and accuses us of playing false to our upbringing. He claims to have knowledge of God, and calls himself a son of the Lord. Before us he stands, a reproof to our way of thinking, the very sight of him weighs our spirits down; his way of life is not like other men’s, the paths he treads are unfamiliar. In his opinion we are counterfeit; he holds aloof from our doings as though from filth; he proclaims the final end of the virtuous as happy and boasts of having God for his father. Let us see if what he says is true, let us observe what kind of end he himself will have. If the virtuous man is God’s son, God will take his part and rescue him from the clutches of his enemies. Let us test him with cruelty and with torture, and thus explore this gentleness of his and put his endurance to the proof. Let us condemn him to a shameful death since he will be looked after – we have his word for it.’ This is the way they reason, but they are misled, their malice makes them blind. They do not know the hidden things of God, they have no hope that holiness will be rewarded, they can see no reward for blameless souls.
Psalm 33 (34):16, 18, 19-21, 23
R/ The Lord is close to the broken-hearted.
1. The Lord turns his face against the wicked to destroy their remembrance from the earth. They call and the Lord hears and rescues them in all their distress.
2. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted; those whose spirit is crushed he will save. Many are the trials of the just man but from them all the Lord will rescue him.
3. He will keep guard over all his bones, not one of his bones shall be broken. The Lord ransoms the souls of his servants. Those who hide in him shall not be condemned.

Gospel: John 7:1-2,10,25-30
Jesus stayed in Galilee; he could not stay in Judaea, because the Jews were out to kill him. As the Jewish feast of Tabernacles drew near, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, but quite privately, without drawing attention to himself. Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, ‘Isn’t this the man they want to kill? And here he is, speaking freely, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authorities have made up their minds that he is the Christ? Yet we all know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one will know where he comes from.’ Then, as Jesus taught in the Temple, he cried out: ‘Yes, you know me and you know where I came from. Yet I have not come of myself: no, there is one who sent me and I really come from him, and you do not know him, but I know him because I have come from him and it was he who sent me.’ They would have arrested him then, but because his time had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.
Prayer over the Offerings
May this sacrifice, almighty God, cleanse us by its mighty power and lead us to approach its source with ever greater purity. Through Christ our Lord.
Communion Antiphon: Eph 1: 7
In Christ, we have redemption by his Blood, and forgiveness of our sins, in accord with the riches of his grace.
Prayer after Communion
Grant, we pray, O Lord, that, as we pass from old to new, so, with former ways left behind, we may be renewed in holiness of mind. Through Christ our Lord.
Prayer over the People
Look upon your servants, O Lord, and in your goodness protect with heavenly assistance those who trust in your mercy. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Meditation
The turning point of the ascent to Jerusalem clearly opens the understanding of God’s plan in his Son. This plan must be realised by God at the appointed time. The ignorance, which is manifest in the words of the crowd, contrasts here with Jesus’ knowledge of his mission, which his words express. Who has the secret and the mystery of this mission? Only God the Father is the master of the mission of his Son for the salvation of the world. Father, how often our ignorance blinds us and our pride closes our ears! Grant us, O Lord, the grace to overcome our handicap, and let us see you in the tenderness of your wisdom.
