Saint Melchiades (d. 314)
Purple
Born in Africa, Melchiades was pope in Rome when the Church obtained its freedom after centuries of persecution. He ordered the construction of many churches and was the first pope to occupy the cathedral of St John Lateran. He was pope for only 3 years.

Meditation
Jesus teaches us through this Gospel that God’s will is to save all “these little ones.” The little ones in this context represent all those who sincerely accept God in their hearts and refuse to reject him despite the vicissitudes of life. Every single person is “one of these little ones.” It may initially seem unfair that the shepherd is happier about the one lost sheep than the other ninety- nine sheep. But it makes sense if we realise that every one of us is that one lost sheep. We must consider the shepherd’s intense desire to locate us as we think about this parable. We must consider how concerned, persistent, and diligent he was in looking for us. This is God’s concern for you. To be small in the sight of God consists of constantly abandoning oneself to his Providence and Protection. This entails cultivating a life entirely geared towards the Lord, conscious of one’s limits but especially confident in the immense mercy of the Father.

The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is the doctrine that the Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin, a grace that enabled Mary to give a “Yes” to becoming mother of the incarnate God, Jesus. The doctrine was formally defined as a doctrine of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1854.

Meditation
The solemnity of the Immaculate Conception invites us to recognise the privilege that God has given to the Virgin Mary by giving her graces. Mary is, according to the salting words of the Angel, “so highly favoured” and “Filled with Graces.” This woman, full of grace, has a special space in her heart to help us. We are invited on this day not to limit the possibilities of God, that is to say, to let his mystery unfold gradually in us without constituting us as obstacles to grace. Suppose today’s feast is to be about more than the ‘privileges’ of Mary. In that case, we need to see it in the light of the second reading of the Mass: God chose us in Christ, to be holy and spotless, and to live through love in his presence” (Eph 1:4). God’s great project: the humanity that doesn’t flee from his presence, full of shame like Adam and Eve, but which he can draw to himself in Christ, through the Spirit. Mary is God’s “sign of favour to the Church at its beginning, and the promise of its perfection as the bride of Christ, radiant in beauty….” (Preface of today’s Mass).

First reading: Baruch 5:1-9

He went through the whole Jordan district proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the sayings of the prophet Isaiah: A voice cries in the wilderness: Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight. Meditation
John the Baptist gained popularity because many individuals were struggling with the issues present in their society. He indicated an alternative path. He informed people about the impending change and advised them to prepare themselves. However, this was not a situation of passive waiting. To succeed, individuals must make changes within themselves and eliminate any obstacles. His baptism was an invitation to let go of the old ways and prepare for the new. John is considered to be a prophet. We were anointed as priest, prophet, and king during our baptism ceremony. John informed the individuals that God was actively working. We are also obligated to do this. We should strive to make those around us feel the presence of something greater than ourselves through both our words and actions. We should strive to live our lives in a way that inspires those we come across to have an encounter with Jesus. However, there could be some obstacles in the form of challenges and setbacks hindering our progress.

Saint Ambrose, Bishop, Doctor
(340 – 397)
White
He was born in Trier, Germany, between 337 and 340. Coerced by the people and by the emperor, he was baptized, ordained, and installed as bishop in 374. Ambrose was a key figure in the conversion of St Augustine to Catholicism, impressing Augustine by his intelligence and scholarship. He died on Holy Saturday, 4 April 397.

In the midst of the Church he opened his mouth, and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding and clothed him in a robe of glory.

O God, who made the Bishop Saint Ambrose a teacher of the Catholic faith and a model of apostolic courage, raise up in your Church men after your own heart to govern her with courage and wisdom. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest.’ He summoned his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to cast them out and to cure all kinds of diseases and sickness. Meditation
Today Jesus empowers the apostles to go out and preach the good news and baptise people, thereby making them Christians. By our Christian vocation, Jesus gives us the same mandate to go out and preach the good news. Preaching the good news may not necessarily mean becoming a pastor, but we can do much of this by how we live. We become witnesses to Christ through our conduct. As Christians, certain moral conduct is expected from us. We can convert people or bring about positive change in people’s lives through our daily encounters with them. Let us ask Christ to give us his grace to live up to our Christian expectations.

Saint Nicholas, Bishop
Purple/White
He was bishop of Myra, in Lycia (now part of Turkey) and died about the middle of the fourth century. He is the patron saint of pawnbrokers, whose insignia of three golden balls represent the three purses of gold he is said to have given secretly to a poor man who could not afford dowries for his three daughters.

Behold, the Lord will come descending with splendour to visit his people with peace, and he will bestow on them eternal life.

Stir up your power, we pray, O Lord, and come, that with you to protect us, we may find rescue from the pressing dangers of our sins, and with you to set us free, we may be found worthy of salvation. Who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Isaiah 29:17-24
The Lord says this: In a short time, a very short time, shall not Lebanon become fertile land and fertile land turn into forest? Meditation
“Your faith deserves it” is Jesus’s answer to the two blind men after touching their eyes. The faith of the faithful, accompanied by the sacramental gesture, is a guarantee of answered prayers. Many Christians seem to forget this fact, and sometimes they go as far as to weaken their faith by seeking their healing solely and absolutely through sacramental gestures. Through their faith, the blind men received Christ’s light and can now say, like the psalmist, “The Lord is my light.” The Lord Jesus stands out as the light which lightens our darkness and points out the way. Humanity needs to ask the Lord Jesus to have pity on her and restore her sight so that once more she may see the Lord’s designs in making them male and female and in making the womb a life-bearer and not a death chamber.

Saint Birinus
Purple
Birinus was sent to England as a missionary by Pope Honorius I about the year 634. He died about 650 and the main Church of the West Saxons which he had established at Dorchester-on-Thames was later moved to Winchester, as were the relics of Saint Birinus.

Gospel : Matthew 7:21. 24-27
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘It is not those who say to me, “Lord, Lord”, who will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the person who does the will of my Father in heaven.’ Therefore, everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on rock. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and hurled themselves against that house, and it did not fall: it was founded on rock. But everyone who listens to these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a stupid man who built his house on sand. Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and struck that house, and it fell; and what a fall it had!’
Prayer over the Offerings
Accept, we pray, O Lord, these offerings we make, gathered from among your gifts to us, and may what you grant us to celebrate devoutly here below gain for us the prize of eternal redemption. Through Christ our Lord.

May these mysteries, O Lord, in which we have participated, profit us, we pray, for even now, as we walk amid passing things, you teach us by them to love the things of heaven and hold fast to what endures. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
A rock represents stability, consistency, and concreteness… Of course, it is also a symbol of rigidity and hardness, but that is not the point here. Stability means not being blown around by every wind of thought, passing enthusiasm, or passing fashion. Consistency entails not relying on brilliant words alone but putting the weight of one’s life behind each word we speak – so much so and so habitually that no words are required. Concreteness means not avoiding challenges, but confronting them head-on, even if they threaten to test or defeat us severely. Since the Incarnation, abstract-sounding realities like the mind of God, the will of God, etc., have become concrete in Christ. “You are the house whose foundations are the apostles and prophets, and whose cornerstone is Christ Jesus” (Eph 2:20).
