Jude, also called Thaddaeus, is the apostle who at the Last Supper asked the Lord why he showed himself only to the disciples and not to the world. For many centuries he was scarcely venerated because people confused him with Judas Iscariot. He is the patron saint of lost and desperate causes. Simon is eleventh in the list of the twelve Apostles. He is known as Simon the Zealot, but nothing else is known about him. His other name of “Simon Cananaeus” simply adapts another Hebrew word for “zeal” and has nothing to do with the town of Cana.

These are the holy men whom the Lord chose in his own perfect love; to them he gave eternal glory.

O God, who by the blessed Apostles have brought us to acknowledge your name, graciously grant, through the intercession of Saints Simon and Jude, that the Church may constantly grow by increase of the peoples who believe in you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
First reading : Ephesians 2:19-22
You are no longer aliens or foreign visitors: you are citizens like all the saints, and part of God’s household. You are part of a building that has the apostles and prophets for its foundations, and Christ Jesus himself for its main cornerstone. As every structure is aligned on him, all grow into one holy temple in the Lord; and you too, in him, are being built into a house where God lives, in the Spirit.

As we venerate the perpetual glory of the holy Apostles Simon and Jude, O Lord, we ask that you receive our prayers and lead us to worthy celebration of the sacred mysteries. Through Christ our Lord.

Having received this Sacrament, O Lord, we humbly implore you in the Holy Spirit, that what we do to honour the glorious passion of the Apostles Simon and Jude may keep us ever in your love. Through Christ our Lord.
Meditation
It is characteristic of Jesus any time he wants to execute a major project in his ministry to spend a lot of time in prayer. Today’s gospel tells us that Jesus spent the whole night in prayer and in the morning he selected from his disciples a group of twelve men whom he called apostles. Prayer is our communion with God. In it the Father – son relationship is demonstrated. We praise and thank him for His blessings while seeking for His guidance in our daily programs. To entrust our plans and purposes into the hands of God, to seek His enlightenment is very necessary. Jesus has shown us an example. Apart from Him we can do nothing. May St. Simon and Jude continue to intercede for us and may we not let Jesus down. Amen.

Second reading: Hebrews 5:1-6
Every high priest has been taken out of mankind and is appointed to act for men in their relations with God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins; and so he can sympathise with those who are ignorant or uncertain because he too lives in the limitations of weakness. That is why he has to make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. No one takes this honour on himself, but each one is called by God, as Aaron was. Nor did Christ give himself the glory of becoming high priest, but he had it from the one who said to him: You are my son, today I have become your father, and in another text: You are a priest of the order of Melchizedek, and for ever.

Meditation
How many times during our day does Jesus pass by, and we fail to recognise him and fail to call him? We may have fixed ideas as to where we can find Him. It is easy to find him in the Tabernacle but less easy in a person we do not like. “Call him here”, says Jesus. The people become involved and encourage him. So many people have led me to Jesus: parents, family, friends or teachers. Pause now and thank all those who brought us to Jesus. “‘What do you want me to do for you? This is the same question he asked the sons of Zebedee last Sunday. His answer is simple: “Master, let me see again.” The secret of life is to be able to see life’s real meaning and direction and to know where God is to be found. It is a prayer that will be answered as it was here. “Go; your faith has saved you.” He follows Jesus along the way, he is no longer a passive beggar sitting and waiting for people of goodwill to give him money. He knows Jesus as the Way, the Truth and the Life.

Saint Chad (672)
Green
He became abbot of Lastingham and was chosen to be bishop of Northumbria, but St Wilfrid contested his appointment, and Chad obediently withdrew. He was then sent as bishop to Mercia, He died at Lichfield on 2 March 672 and was immediately revered as a saint because of the holiness of his life, his outstanding humility, and his dedication to preaching of the Gospel.

First reading : Ephesians 4:7-16
Each one of us has been given his own share of grace, given as Christ allotted it. It was said that he would: When he ascended to the height, he captured prisoners, he gave gifts to men. When it says, ‘he ascended’, what can it mean if not that he descended right down to the lower regions of the earth? The one who rose higher than all the heavens to fill all things is none other than the one who descended. And to some, his gift was that they should be apostles; to some, prophets; to some, evangelists; to some, pastors and teachers; so that the saints together make a unity in the work of service, building up the body of Christ. In this way we are all to come to unity in our faith and in our knowledge of the Son of God, until we become the perfect Man, fully mature with the fullness of Christ himself. Then we shall not be children any longer, or tossed one way and another and carried along by every wind of doctrine, at the mercy of all the tricks men play and their cleverness in practising deceit. If we live by the truth and in love, we shall grow in all ways into Christ, who is the head by whom the whole body is fitted and joined together, every joint adding its own strength, for each separate part to work according to its function. So the body grows until it has built itself up, in love.

Some people arrived and told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with that of their sacrifices. No; but unless you repent you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen on whom the tower at Siloam fell and killed them? Meditation
As we watch international news daily, we see thousands or even millions displaced due to violence. Many people looking for greener pastures abroad get drowned in the Sea and die due to harsh conditions. People tend to ask, why? Or why them? Why was Gandhi killed just when his country needed him most? Why did that young mother die giving birth to her child? Jesus mentions two recent incidents in which lives were lost. It seems that some people at the time were saying that this was a punishment of God on these people for moral wrongs they had done. Jesus disagrees. “Do you suppose that they were more guilty than all the other people living in Jerusalem? They were not, I tell you.” he asserts. They did not suffer because of any sins they had committed, but their death certainly was a warning to the rest of us. The people are like the fig tree in the parable. They still have a chance to turn their lives around, a chance which was not given to those who had died in those two incidents.

Saints Chrysanthus and Daria

They are Roman martyrs, buried on the Via Salaria Nova. The feast of these saints stands in the Roman martyrology on the 25th of October, dating from the seventh century.

Meditation
The people of Jesus’ time expected that extraordinary signs and wonders would accompany the coming of the Messiah. They were more interested in signs and supernatural phenomena than in God’s word. Jesus gave them no sign except himself and the ultimate proof of his divinity. The Lord reveals himself to us in many ways, in his word and the “breaking of the bread” in the Lord’s supper or Eucharist and even in the everyday circumstances of our lives. Sometimes he reveals himself to us more in our sickness and our sufferings. Sometimes he allows us to be crippled by sickness so that his power can flow from us to others. If we seek the Lord truthfully, we can be confident he will give us everything we need to do his will. The Lord assures us of his presence and the promise that he will never leave us. Theresa of Avila’s prayer book was found to contain a bookmark inscribed: Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you; All things pass: God never changes. Patience achieves all it strives for. Whoever has God lacks nothing, God alone suffices. Is God enough for you?

Saint Antony Mary Claret, Bishop, Founder (1807 – 1870)
White
He was born in 1807 and ordained priest in 1835. His uncompromising preaching raised hostility against him, and he suffered fifteen assassination attempts. He is the founder of the Claretians and supported in the foundation of other Institutes. He founded a great religious library and publishing house in Barcelona which published millions of cheap copies of ancient and modern Catholic works. In 1851 the Pope appointed him Bishop of Santiago de Cuba. Recalled to Spain in 1857 by Queen Isabella II to act as her confessor, he did further great work for the Church. In 1868, revolution caused him to go into exile in France, where he died in 1870.

Meditation
Jesus promises to bring fire to the earth. In the imagery of the Old Testament, fire is a symbol of God’s powerful presence: we remember Moses at the burning bush, the pillar of fire that accompanied the Israelites by night as they wandered through the desert to the Promised Land, as well as the tongues of fire that hovered over the disciples at Pentecost. The fire that came at Pentecost is a fire that burns people’s hearts and draws them to change the direction of their lives. For Jesus’ wish to be fulfilled, we must play our part in helping to spread some of that fire of God’s love everywhere. One of our baptismal commitments is being messengers of God’s love. Jesus refers to a baptism which is his immersion in the terrible suffering and death by which we will be liberated. He also spoke of division which seems to contradict his identity as Prince of Peace. But no. After his death, we have been witnesses of persecution even today and tensions over our practice of the faith. But only those who hold firm with him to the end shall see his saving power.

Saint John of Capistrano, Priest (1386 – 1456)

He was born in Capistrano in the Abruzzi in 1386. He joined the Friars Minor and was ordained. John preached a crusade against the invading Turks in 1456 and took part in the battles that kept Christian Europe safe from Turkish invasion. He died of the Plague in 1456. He is the patron saint of military chaplains.

First reading : Ephesians 3:2-12
You have probably heard how I have been entrusted by God with the grace he meant for you, and that it was by a revelation that I was given the knowledge of the mystery, as I have just described it very shortly. If you read my word you will have some idea of the depths that I see in the mystery of Christ. This that has now been revealed through the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets was unknown to any men in past generations; it means that pagans now share the same inheritance, that they are parts of the same body, and that the same promise has been made to them, in Jesus Christ, through the Gospel. I have been made the servant of that Gospel by a gift of grace from God who gave it to me by his own power. I, who am less than the least of all the saints have been entrusted with this special grace, not only of proclaiming to the pagans the infinite treasure of Christ but also of explaining how the mystery is to be dispensed. Through all the ages, this has been kept hidden in God, the creator of everything. Why? So that the Sovereignties and Powers should learn only now, through the Church, how comprehensive God’s wisdom really is, exactly according to the plan which he had had from all eternity in Christ Jesus our Lord. This is why we are bold enough to approach God in complete confidence, through our faith in him.

Happy that servant if his master’s arrival finds him at this employment. I tell you truly, he will place him over everything he owns. But as for the servant who says to himself, “My master is taking his time coming,” and sets about beating the menservants and the maids, and eating and drinking and getting drunk, his master will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not know. The master will cut him off and send him to the same fate as the unfaithful. The servant who knows what his master wants, but has not even started to carry out those wishes, will receive very many strokes of the lash. The one who did not know, but deserves to be beaten for what he has done, will receive fewer strokes. When a man has had a great deal given him, a great deal will be demanded of him; when a man has had a great deal given him on trust, even more will be expected of him.’

Meditation
The analogy of the thief in the night teaches us that we should always be faithful to God. The Lord loves faithfulness and richly rewards those who are faithful to him. What is faithfulness? It is keeping one’s word, promise, and commitment, no matter how tough. It is being who we are and are expected to be all the time, whether someone is seeing us or not. Faithfulness is a key character trait of God and one that he expects of us. God gives us the grace and strength to remain faithful. He also rewards faithfulness. The joy and privilege of being a son or daughter of God carries a tremendous responsibility. The Lord expects us to make good use of the gifts and graces he gives to us. The more he gives, the more he requires. While the Master is away, there is a tendency to put off for tomorrow what we know the Master expects us to do today! Are you faithful to God and ready to give him an account of your stewardship whenever he requests?
